Thinking...
The next couple of days went pretty much the same as the last, it had been hard work followed by more pressure as the days ticked by. Rainbow had learned to grit her teeth and enjoy what she could, she was lucky to have Spitfire by her side though and it always made the nights so much better than it would be alone.
It was now coming to the weekend of the first week in Manehatten, the team had perfected their new move, but they still had to work on the routine itself.
As the sun made it’s way into the sky all the Wonderbolts had just finished their morning training session and were heading inside for a break. Rainbow had improved her endurance, but the lack of naps had been getting to her.
Spitfire smiled as she waited for her marefriend to get to the entrance to the arena, “hey sleepy head, didn’t you have a good sleep last night?” she asked concerned.
Dash nodded. “Yeah sleeping’s been good but, I’m not used to training all day everyday, but I can handle it,” she said putting a hoof to her mouth as she yawned.
Spitfire nodded and leaned over to kiss the mare on the cheek, “well at least you aren't going to pass out on us, but maybe we should start to slacken down on the training. I’ll have to see what Silver says, you're still going to the club tonight or do you want to just go back to the hotel?” she asked as she started trotting with the mare into the inner parts of the stadium.
Rainbow pondered for a moment before nodding, “yeah sure, why not, if it means I get to spend more time with you,” she said happily.
Spitfire gave an approving nod. “That’s the spirit cadet,” she said trying to hold in the laughter.
Dash smirked. “Well..I try,” she said with a knowing wink.
As the pair trotted along the hallways Spitfire stopped outside Silver’s temporary office in the stadium. Dash turned around to see what Spitfire was doing, “hey Spit, are you not getting something to eat?” she asked curiously.
Spitfire looked over at the sky blue mare, “I will, but I’ve gotta speak to Skies first, save me something,” she said happily.
Dash nodded and started trotting down the hallway towards the mess hall. Spitfire turned back to the door and gave it a few knocks before waiting for a voice.
“Come in,” Silver Skies said.
Spitfire opened the door and trotted into the room, it was less fancy than the office in Cloudsdale, but it was still something to be marveled at with it’s giant pictures and furniture. The stallion behind the large desk looked up at the mare, Spitfire sat down in front of the stallion before speaking up, “sir...I think we may be pushing the team to hard.”
Silver sighed. “What do you mean Spitfire, it’s only been three days since you started the training, is there some sort of major problem?” he asked.
Spitfire shook her head, “no sir, it’s just that the team-”
“It’s about Rainbow Dash isn’t it?” Silver said raising an eyebrow.
Spitfire was slightly shocked by the stallion's question, “well it’s um, not just her sir it’s the rest of the team as well,” she replied.
Silver Skies sighed and got up off his seat as he turned his back on the mare, there was a brief period of silence before he spoke, “I’m not stupid Spitfire, I can tell you're worried about your marefriend, but we cannot jeopardize the entire teams performance on her,” he stated.
Spitfire felt the anger rise slightly, “sir with all do respect, I wouldn’t ask you this unless the whole team was in some sort of problem,” she said trying to reason with the stallion.
Silver sighed, still not moving from his current position, “well...that maybe true Spitfire, but I still cannot allow the training to be put on hold, you have a lot of work to get through,” he said knowingly as he turned to face the mare.
Spitfire closed her eyes as she pondered on the thought, she wanted her team to be on top form for the show and not a pack of sleeping foals, but on the other hoof she needed to get this performance finished...but at what cost?
Finally Spitfire nodded. "Okay sir, I understand but I must protest about the training over the weekend, we can't work the team half to death," she said.
Silver nodded. "Okay Spitfire, I will allow you and the team to have the weekend off, but no more, are we clear?" he asked.
Spitfire nodded. "Yes sir," she said confidently. Silver skies returned the nod and motioned for the mare to leave the office. Spitfire did so as the stallion returned to his duties.
Meanwhile in the mess hall, Rainbow was digging into her first meal of the day, she was thinking over what her plans were if she managed to get through the rest of today’s training without falling asleep.
Just then the clattering sound of a tray hitting the table roused Dash from her thoughts. She looked up to see Spitfire’s brother Blazing sitting down next to her. She still felt slightly nervous around the stallion when she wasn’t with Spitfire, but she kept her composure and decided to keep eating.
A few moments of awkward silence then followed until Blazing spoke, “you know, it’s polite to say hello?” he said in his usual goofy tone.
Dash nearly choked on the pasta she was swallowing and she turned round to face the stallion again. She gulped down the rest of her current food before speaking, “oh, um...sorry about that...what’s up?” she asked hesitantly.
Blazing smiled happily, “nothing much," he replied, "soo how are you enjoying the Wonderbolts?” he asked curiously.
Rainbow sighed. “Well...it’s alright I guess just…-”
“Not what you were expecting?” Blazing finished with a knowing tone. Dash nodded.
Another silence fell over the pair before the silver stallion spoke, “so how’s Spitfire been doing?” he asked hesitantly.
Dash was a bit shocked by the question, “wouldn’t you know how your own sister was doing?” she asked.
Blazing sighed heavily. “Actually to tell you the truth...we haven’t had a proper conversation in months…,” he said sadly.
Dash raised an eyebrow, “why not?” she asked concerned.
Blazing rubbed the back of his neck hesitantly before replying, “I guess it’s my fault...we used to be so close when we we’re foals...but since I changed my tune a few years ago we’ve just...gone our separate ways,” he said with another hefty sigh before continuing, “I loved the days I spent as a colt with my sister...we used to have the best of times...but now thanks to my attitude and self indulgence in beer I’ve ruined it…but I want to make things right,” he said confidently.
Dash was slightly confused by this, “wait...so after all these years you all of a sudden want to be a good brother again...what gives?” she asked with a slight smirk.
Blazing looked over at the mare, “well...Spitfire’s going to be enduring a rough time when word gets out that you two are together…our parents aren't gonna take it well and I wanna...be there for her when the going gets tough...guess I should have figured it out a while ago,” he said the guilt evident in his tone as he took a sip of his water.
For the first time, Dash started to feel some sympathy for the stallion, in the mists of becoming famous he’d broken a strong bond...when he realized it...it was too late.
Dash stopped what she was doing and turned round to fully face the stallion, she held a sincere smile on her face as she spoke, “you know what Blazing...you're not actually half bad once you stop being such an annoying ass,” she said giving him a playful shove.
Blazing blushed slightly in embarrassment, “yeah I guess so,” he said with a light chuckle as a smile started to grow on his muzzle.
Dash kept smiling as she continued, “you know, if you wanna get on Spitfire’s good side… then just you know...stop with the acting cool stuff and just be nice, like my friend Applejack told me, it’s better to be yourself than hiding behind a mask,” she said truthfully.
Blazing nodded acceptingly, “thanks Dash...you know you aren't half bad either… I think we got off on the wrong start, my names Blazing Fire, nice to meet your acquaintance,” he said happily holding out his hoof to which Dash happily shook.
Suddenly both ponies were brought into a group hug, “well I'm glad to see you both getting along so well,” Spitfire said happily, looking between the pair as she held her wings around both ponies pulling them closer together.
Dash rolled her eyes playfully before speaking, “oh hey, how did your conversation with Silver go?” she asked curiously as Spitfire released the hug and sat down next to her marefriend.
Spitfire sighed. “fraid it didn’t go down well...he’s not lifting up on the training,” she said as Dash lowered her head, “but he has agreed that we can take the weekend off, so are you going to come to the club tonight?” she asked in a hopeful tone.
Dash nodded. “sure if it means we don’t have to train all weekend I’m down with it,” she said happily.
Spitfire smiled warmly and nuzzled Dash’s cheek. Blazing sighed happily and spoke up, “well...I’ll leave you two alone for now, it was nice getting to know you a bit more miss Dash,” he said with a smirk before getting up and trotting away.
Spitfire looked between her marefriend and brother curiously, “what’s he up too?” she asked raising an eyebrow.
Rainbow looked away slightly nervous, “nothing much, but he’s actually quite alright once he stops being a jerk and actually talks to you,” she said happily.
Spitfire nodded as she nuzzled her partners cheek once more, “yeah, see what I told you Dash… he’s a goofball, but in the end I love him,” she said knowingly.
Dash smirked playfully, “are you trying to say that your brothers more lovable than me?” she said.
Spitfire shook her head playfully, “you know what I meant silly filly,” she said as the pair let out a giggle.
Spitfire sighed as she got up, “well I guess we’ve gotta get back to training, come on let’s get this over with,” she said beginning to trot towards the exit off the hall.
Dash nodded and got up as she began to follow the golden mare out of the hall, happy that she could be spending the night with her once again…
