Chapter 25: Afternoon Training
The sun over Equestria was now starting to dip as they day started to wind down, the sunset giving off a red and orange hue which cascaded down the walls of the Wonderbolt stadium. Spitfire watched the sight unfold, she took that as the time to end the day's training for most of the team. She blew on her trusty silver whistle as the Wonderbolt team lined up in front of her. She smiled, seeing the entire team now back in action. “Okay team, great work today! I think you guys can all call it quits for tonight. But remember, keep practicing, we only have a day before the show,” she said knowingly as the ponies saluted her before taking off towards home, leaving just her and Rainbow Dash at the arena.
The golden mare turned to face her marefriend. “Well, I guess we may as well start our extra training,” she said, rolling her eyes playfully.
Rainbow grinned. “Cool! It’s kinda better just being you and me though.”
Spitfire chuckled. “Well that’s good, and besides, you can teach me some of your moves,” she replied.
Rainbow raised an eyebrow. “What kinda moves are we talking?” she asked with a hint of excitement.
Spitfire pondered for a moment, before responding, “Well… I know it’s a hard move, but how about…the rainboom?” she asked hesitantly.
Dash fumbled with her hooves slightly as she spoke, “Well…”
“It’s okay, Dash. It’s your move anyway, if you don’t want to teach me how to do it, that’s fine,” Spitfire said cutting her marefriend off before she had a chance to speak.
Dash rolled her eyes. “You didn’t let me finish, Spitfire, of course I’ll teach my awesome marefriend how to perform the most awesome move in Equestria,” she said as Spitfire beamed happily at her. “What I was gonna say is that it takes a lot of practice,” Rainbow finished.
Spitfire nodded confidently, spreading her wings. “Okay, Dash, let’s do this!”
Rainbow grinned and flared her wings before taking off into the sky with Spitfire following closely behind. Rainbow flew up to a high altitude above the circuit of the arena, and waited for Spitfire to catch up to her. Once the yellow mare was by her side, Rainbow spoke up, “Okay, Spits. This is the hard part of a rainboom, you have to get up to a speed where the force starts to pull you back and keep going, don’t let anything distract you either,” she said, looking over at her marefriend.
Spitfire gave an unsure nod before she started speeding up. Using all her strength, she jumped ahead of Rainbow and kept pushing forward into the air. She looked down and felt her heart start to race as she saw the little white cones start to form at the tips of her hooves; this spurred the pegasus onwards as she kept pushing her wings harder, gaining more speed. Soon, the cone shape started to get larger, but the force increased with it making more of a struggle for the Wonderbolt captain.
Rainbow Dash watched the scene unfold with a mix of doubt and excitement. But suddenly, the force became too great and the exhausted pegasus was blown back over the stadium. Dash smiled, launching up to catch her. Spitfire turned to look at her marefriend with a sheepish grin. “Well... I tried,” she said, shrugging her shoulders.
Dash waved a dismissive hoof. “Ha, don’t worry about it, as I said: it takes a lot of practice. And besides, I’ve only been able to do it when I feel the need to, like saving a pony… or their job,” she said, smirking at her marefriend.
Spitfire giggled playfully as she shook her head. “You’re one of a kind, Dash,” she said happily as the sky blue mare in question leaned down to gently nuzzle her marefriend. The pair set off to more training.
As the day rolled on Spitfire and Rainbow tried the move again and again...still with no success. Still a lot of fun was had and Rainbow inpicticular was happy that she could finally return the favour in teaching her marefriend some new moves. It was a nice warm feeling and something she didn't want to lose.
After a while Luna’s moon started to rise into the sky, both mare’s took that as their cue to finish up the day’s training. Spitfire flew alongside Rainbow Dash as they soared across the vast floating city towards Rainbow’s parent’s house. When they landed at the estate home Rainbow motioned for Spitfire to stay quiet. The yellow pegasus did so as Rainbow took out a key from under a small cloud statue at the doorstep of the home and opened the door into the quiet building. Rainbow again motioned for Spitfire to come into the the home, once she was in Rainbow closed the door behind her and quietly they made their way up to Rainbow’s room. Soon they made their way into the room and crashed onto the small bed exhausted. Spitfire turned to Rainbow as she spoke, “We really need to get a hotel,” she said to which the pair gave out a soft giggle.
Rainbow nodded before she yawned. “Yeah, we probably should.”
Spitfire sighed as she looked out of the window of the bedroom. “Welp, only one more day and then the tours over, then we can get back to you and me,” she said nuzzling the blue mare.
Dash smiled. “Yeah, it’s been the best tour ever Spitfire, my foal hood dream… thanks,” she said, leaning over as the pair shared a deep kiss with one another. Spitfire smiled happily as the sky blue pegasus pulled away.
“Well you know, if this show goes well… Silver will be making you into a Wonderbolt for next years team!” Spitfire stated. Dash smiled excitingly as she thought about the day when she’d wear a uniform with her name on it. Spitfire leaned over and kissed the mare on the cheek. “Goodnight, Dashie, I love you.”
Rainbow snuggled up to her marefriend as she sighed softly. “I love you too Spitfire,” she said before drifting off to sleep.
Spitfire watched her marefriend as she slept soundly next to her. The golden mare looked back out into the night sky as she thought about the coming events of the next few days. She smiled to herself as she thought about her and Rainbow after all this would be over. She looked back down at the mare of her dreams as she whispered, "you may not know it my love, but we have one of the strongest bonds anypony could fathom. I will always love you Rainbow Dash...and will always be their for you, your loyalty is worth more to me than anything and it's something I intend to return" The Wonderbolt captain said before she laid back down onto the bed and nuzzled Rainbow’s mane before she fell asleep.
Nopony, however, could have expected what was to come…
