Chapter 27: The Aftermath
Across Cloudsdale news quickly spread of the disastrous accident which had befallen the Wonderbolt Captain, as the city tried to recall what had happened. in Cloudsdale’s hospital however a very different emotion was running throughout the building…panic.
The doors to an emergency hallway where thrown open as doctors and nurses rushed down the hallway as a pegasus was carried by a stretcher, blood was visibly seen on the white sheets that covered the small makeshift bed as she was rushed towards an emergency room. Rainbow Dash was close behind as she tried to keep up with them. The doctors guided the nurses into a room in one of the many hallways and locked the doors. Rainbow slammed into them as she tried to get through...but it was no use.
Rainbow banged on the door with a frantic hoof, “let me in I need to see her!” she shouted as tears streamed down her face dripping onto the floor below. She slipped down the doors as she burst out in tears crying into her hooves.
Blazing Fire quickly caught up in the hallway and saw the pegasus crying her heart out next to a set of double doors. He made his way over to her and put a hoof on her shoulder making sure she was alright. Rainbow felt the contact and looked up for a moment to see Blazing crouching down next to her with the same dread ridden face as her own. Rainbow leaped forward slightly clinging onto Blazing as she buried her muzzle into his chest quickly matting it with her tears. Blazing did nothing but simply wrap his hooves around the mare and hold her tightly. He looked on through the doors with a blank expression as he let his own tears fall.
Soarin was next into the long plain white hallway, his suit slightly stained with crimson blood from helping carry his befallen friend into the stretcher. He simply stood and stared at the two pegasi next to the doors currently wrapped up in one anothers embrace, the atmosphere felt panicked, tragic...but above all else...lost.
Rainbow took short breaths as she tried her best to calm down, but was only causing her to hyperventilate as her mind raced, she grabbed Blazing by the shoulders startling the stallion slightly as she spoke, “d-d-do you think, s-she’ll b-be alr-right?” she asked as tears continued to pour out of her eyelids hoping for at least some kind of answer, her body now starting to shake slightly from the fear that was going througout her body.
Blazing felt even more sorry now for the mare in his hooves, his heart leaping out at him wanting to just give at least some reassurance to the mare that it would be okay, but he knew that it would be far from the truth. The stallion shook his head slowly as he replied, “I don’t know Dash…I don’t know.”
Upon hearing this Rainbow proceeded to bury her head back into the stallion as she continued to cry more than ever. The sounds echoing off the walls as sadness filled the entire building. Soarin shook his head in disbelief choosing to lean on a nearby wall as tried to figure out some sort of solution in his mind.
Meanwhile further down the hallway all the other members of the team waited anxiously for any kind of news, the feeling in the air was tense as the echo’s of a pony’s cries came from throughout the hallway.
Fleetfoot turned to Rapid Fire, fear in her usually joyful eyes that were now dark and sad, “d-do you think she’ll be alright?” she whispered in a panicked tone.
Rapid Fire lowered his head slightly, “I don’t know Fleet, she hit that wall pretty hard.”
“Shut up you're only making things worse,” Misty said firmly as she let some of her own tears fall. The silence returned once again as all the ponies waited for some kind of information about the pony they cared for.
A Few Hours Later
After a while all the Wonderbolt’s had been moved to a seating area in the hospital close to where Spitfire had been last seen. Rainbow sat on one of the chairs still being held by Blazing as the pegasus continued to cry but with all of her tears now gone, but still the odd whimper came from the mare as she breathed shakily.
Suddenly the opening of a door aroused all the ponies in the hallway. A dark brown stallion trotted up to all the ponies in the hallway as they turned around to look at the doctor. The pony in the white lab coat sighed as he looked upon each of the faces, he knew what he was about to say would upset each and every one of them only making his task even harder. Taking a deep breath he spoke.
“I’m sorry,” he started earning a gasp from half of the ponies, he put his hoof up to continue, “but you’re friend is in a very very bad way, the injuries she sustained from the crash are nothing short of horrific...she has seven broken ribs, five lacerations and a fractured skull. We’ve had to put her on life support for now...but she has a 30 percent chance of making it through the night...I’m deeply sorry, I can tell she is greatly loved.”
With that the stallion left wiping a few lone tears from his muzzle as he trotted away. Rainbow looked at the stallion before saying, “hey!” The doctor turned around as she continued in a quieter tone, “c-can we at least see her?” she asked her voice almost begging in nature.
The doctor was quiet for a few moments before nodding softly, “yes, but please not all of you at once.”
Rainbow looked back at the group of ponies who all tried their best smiles. Blazing nodded as he released his grip on the mare as she gently got up and started trotting with the stallion over to the room. The doctor opened the door letting Rainbow in, she took one last look at the group of ponies before the door shut behind her.
Rainbow slowly looked over the room, the plain white walls covered each and every inch of the room. next to a bed, a small monitor beeped in rhythm as wires and other items scattered the floor in the recent rush of emergency. There was a small desk next to the bed as well which was scattered with papers. Then The sky blue mare’s eyes then fell upon the love of her life, hooked up by machines and laying motionless on the hospital bed. Rainbow felt the tears rise just looking at the sight in front of her, slowly but surely made her way over to the mare. When she finally got to the side of the bed she smiled letting some fresh tears fall as she looked down at her marefriend. She crouched down so she was level with the mare as she spoke up.
“H-hey Spitfire...I don’t know if you can hear me, b-but I just wanted you to know that you're a strong pony and you and I will get through this t-together...I will always be here for you when you wake up my love, just p-please don’t die,” Rainbow said stroking Spitfire’s bright mane before collapsing next to her as she broke down again struggling to keep her cries to a minimum, she slowly moved her head up to face Spitfire’s and planted a small kiss on her muzzle as she spoke, “j-just please S-Spitfire...please come back to me soon...I love you.”
