Chapter 28: Rainbow's Promise

Time seemed quickly fly by for Rainbow. She had only been able to stay by Spitfire’s side for a few more minutes, before she was forcefully escorted out of the room by the hospital security. She was taken back to the small set of chairs next to the room where she had just been, all the other Wonderbolts tried their best smiles as the mare trotted back over to them. She and the rest of the team were told that the doctors needed to perform some emergency surgeries and other important procedures on Spitfire that nopony besides the doctors themselves could be present during. The entire team sat anxiously in the hallway, each trying their very best to cope with the recent tragedy that had befallen their friend. They all lifted their heads and noticed Rainbow trotting up and down the hallway mumbling something to herself. After a while she stopped and sat on the bench they were all sitting on. Rainbow seated herself quietly, completely ignoring the team and curled herself into a tight ball as she began to shiver again lightly from another set of tears. The team watched as Rainbow began to shake and sob quietly to herself all with sad faces.

Suddenly, Rainbow jumped as she felt a wing curl around her. She looked up from her position to see Blazing sitting next to her, his wing placed upon her back. There were no words said as she stared into his eyes which were filled with worry and sadness. She could tell by this alone that the stallion was going through just as much pain as she was. Uncurling more herself more, Rainbow straightened herself back up and wrapped her hooves around Blazing’s midsection, pressing her face into his fur trying her best to get herself away from this nightmare. Blazing just simply held the mare like he had done before as silence once again fell over the ponies in the hallway.

Moments later, Rainbow felt another wing join in with the embrace, then another and another. As she pulled her head out of Blazing chest, she noticed that the whole team had joined in with a giant wing hug. She could feel her cheek muscles softening slightly trying to adjust her face to smile, but before she could her mind remembered why she was here in the first place... why they all were there. The great pain that emanated from her deepest regions only caused her to fall back into Blazing embrace as she sobbed quietly to herself.

Through the double doors in the hallway the same doctor that had broken the news to the team earlier, watched as the Wonderbolts gathered together in an embrace, comforting the broken mare that security had needed to remove from his patient's room. A single tear rolled down his cheek before he trotted off not wanting to take anymore than he had already endured that day.

Rainbow had stopped crying, now barely making any sounds besides her heavy breathing, she was locked away in her mind as she tried to figure out some reason why Spitfire had deflected the shot, her mind had taken away her logic and trying to find a reason in her current state of mind was to hard to complete, but she knew that Golden Fire was going to get more than just a good buck to the face when she got her hooves on him.

Just then the sky blue mare heard the sounds of hooves on the floor, she lifted her head again to see four ponies trotting down the hallway, she gulped her tears down as she spoke in a raspy voice, “hey where are you guys going?” she asked trying to hold back the rest of her tears.

Fleetfoot, Misty and the Lightning brothers looked uneasily at each other as they tried to find a suitable answer. Finally Fleetfoot was the one to speak up, “well we um...we thought we’d just leave you guys to it.”

Rainbow lowered her eyes slightly before she frowned. “You're leaving?” she said slightly angry.

Fleetfoot looked over at the other ponies with a pleading look for one of them to help her out, luckily Misty trotted over to Rainbow and laid a hoof on her shoulder, she sighed before speaking, “We’re just tired Rainbow, I know it’s hard but some of us have to stay on duty in case of another emergency...will let you guys stay and keep watch, as much as we want to stay Rainbow we need to make sure the rest of Equestria is safe.”

Rainbow closed her eyes as she tried to keep in all her emotions, she just gave a nod before putting her head back into Blazing’s chest and listening as the ponies trotted away slowly and then hearing a door opening before the short pause of silence and then the noise of it closing shut again. Rainbow just sighed as she continued to sob quietly.

Blazing looked over at Soarin who sat on the bench next to him and Rainbow, he had been completely silent the entire time. Blazing knew what was going through the stallion’s mind. He’d been best friends with his sister for longer than Blazing had managed to be. Blazing looked lower to see the stallion’s blood stained uniform. At this point Soarin had already noticed his friend staring at him and raised an eyebrow, “what is it?” he asked, his voice slightly more depressed than usual.

Blazing tried a smile, but nothing came, “It’s nothing Soar…just hope we can get out of this mess soon.”

Soarin nodded. “Yeah me too…”

“I just want her to be o-okay,” Rainbow Dash said her voice slightly muffled from being buried in Blazing’s fur.

Blazing and Soarin nodded in approval to the mare’s words as they both started to feel sleep overcoming them. Within a few minutes both stallions had fallen asleep leaning their heads against the top part of the bench. For Rainbow however she found it hard to get herself to sleep, the fear of her marefriend not making it through the night racked her mind, she sighed just choosing to nestle herself in Blazing wings and fur...she knew this would be the worst night of her life…

...

Rainbow Dash looked up lazily from where she was sat, her vision was slightly hazy and she couldn’t make out anything from the bright light that was emanating from the corridor, she rubbed her eye with a forehoof trying to make her eyes see better. Just then she heard a noise which echoed off the world around her. Just then out of the bright light came a mare dressed in white clothing and had a red cross on the front of her shirt. She trotted up to Dash smiling widely as she looked down on the mare.

Dash tried to say something, anything. But nothing came out, instead the mare looking down at her started to talk unaware of Rainbow’s incapability to talk, “Hello Miss Dash I’m very sorry to say that Spitfire has passed away.”

Dash’s eyes widened, she tried to scream but nothing happened. She felt disgusted at the nurse who kept looking down on her with a wide smile like everything was alright, she felt angry at the mare but again she couldn’t retaliate.

The nurse’s smile turned into a more of a grin as she leaned in, “You know Dash it’s not really that bad that she’s gone anyway,” she said leaning in closer.

Dash tried to move but nothing would, she couldn’t do anything more than sit and watch as the mare inched closer before she felt a flooding sensation fill her body, her eyes drifted downwards to see some sort of object being stabbed through her stomach by the nurse. She was shocked she couldn’t feel anything, but that didn’t help her fears that were rapidly increasing.

Suddenly The nurse spoke again making Dash look back up as she drove the object deeper, “You’ll be joining her soon,” she said before ripping the object out as Dash finally regained the power of speech as she screamed louder than she could have ever thought of.

Rainbow awoke with a jolt. She managed to keep her scream from leaving her throat, but her breathing was fast and heavy as her brain churned with some kind of naustic feeling. Then her eyes widened as her mind came to terms with the dream she had just encountered. She needed to see Spitfire.

Quietly Rainbow got out of her embrace with Blazing before she trotted over to the double doors into the room where she last saw Spitfire. She put a hoof on the door and pushed it, but there was no success. Dash sighed, but then she thought of an idea, she pressed her ear against the door and an immense relief poured over her when she heard the rhythmic beeping coming from inside the room. The sound was like a lullaby to Rainbow, she quietly slipped down the door leaning her head against it as she let the noise lul her back to sleep hoping that she would wake up to hear it again…
