Chapter 30: A Waiting Game

Beep...beep...beep...

The steady beep of the cardiograph was the only sound that filled the small hospital room. Rainbow Dash had originally found the sound to be annoying, but never wished for it to stop. After eight days of hearing it's steady rhythm, she had found that it had become almost hypnotic. More than once she had found herself falling to seep to its steady lullaby always by her marefriend's side. For eight days she had heard that steady sound.

It had now been just over a week... a week since the incident that had caused Spitfire to fall into a comma. The rage, sadness, fear and regret were the only things that floated through the atmosphere of the room. For the past week ponies had come from all over equestria to visit the fallen Wonderbolt. Little fillies and colts who were fans had send get well cards to the hospital to show their support, though it seemed it would be a while till Spitfire would get the chance to read them. The nurses had piled the cards and packages in the corner of the small hospital room, and the pile was now ready to overflow.

Each of the Wonderbolts had visited the lonely hospital room at least once in the past week, each happy to hear the news that Spitfire had survived the first night, but all still worried if she would ever wake up. Each had come and gone, left flowers, and silently prayed for her to wake. Soarin and Blazing had been the most rescuing of the team to visit.

The hospital room has had many changes over the past few days. The bed sheets had been changed. The flowers in the vase besides the bad had changed. The curtains had been changed. But throughout the week one thing hadn't changed, one thing had stayed by that bed, that one thing... was Rainbow Dash. She had refused to leave Spitfires side, no matter what and that was exactly what she had done.

Rainbow had stayed by that bedside for the eight days. Sure she left for few minutes at to go to the bathroom or take a shower, but she was always back soon afterwards. The nurses had gotten into the routine of bringing Rainbow some sort of food for her to eat since she wouldn't leave for anything. One of the days even Rainbow's friends came to make a visit and tried their best to get the sky blue mare out of the room if for just a moment, but even after their many attempts to get her to leave Spitfire's side, Rainbow had refused to comply. At this point, she was getting more visitors than Spitfire.
Rainbow continued to talk to spitfire, expecting her to one day talk back. She had remembered watching a movie where a pony woke up from a comma because she heard the voice of somepony who cared for them. So that's what she did; night after night, day after day, she talked.

Blazing Fire had just waved off Soarin who needed to run to his parent's for something, he made his way back into the hospital room again as he watched Rainbow talk to Spitfire like she had done for the past few days.

"Yeah that was awesome! That was the time you performed the double helix for the first time wasn't it... I heard that was soo cool...well coolish I guess...I know... It wasn't that impressive, but I'm running out of things to say here... Please, wake up soon...

Blazing sighed heavily, Rainbows loyalty was pure and unmatched. It was her greatest blessings...but her biggest curse. The stallion trotted into the room and placed a wing over the mare, "You okay?" he asked plainly.

Rainbow blinked a few times before she nodded. "Yeah I'm cool."

Blazing smiled. "Well If you want to come outside"

"It's fine Blazing I think I'll stay"

"Even if?"

"Forget it Blazing nothing is gonna get me to leave her," Rainbow said turning to face the stallion. Blazing sighed again but before he could speak there was a knock at the door. Both ponies looked over to see the light brown stallion trot into the room. The doctor trotted over to the bed as he looked over at Blazing and Rainbow, "Miss Dash, Blazing Fire I trust you are both well?" he asked, to which both nodded happily.

The doctor smiled, but it quickly faded causing Rainbow some concern. Before she could speak up though the doctor started, "I regret to inform you Miss Dash...I've been looking over Spitfire's brain activity and it only seems to be decreasing more and more each day...I don't know if Spitfire will pick up on her brain activity, but from my experience...she's only got days before her brain will stop showing activity all together and the chances of her coming back are nearest to none."

Rainbow stared at the doctor for a moment, all the fear that had slowly been ebbing away had now come back with a vengeance. This turned her world upside down and a flood of tears were already waiting to make the descent down her cheeks. The doctor sighed knowing there wasn't much more to say. He quietly trotted out of the room just leaving Blazing and Rainbow once again. The stallion looked over at the sky blue mare with slight worry in his eyes, "I...she's going to...she-"

"No she isn't going to die!" Rainbow shouted glaring daggers at the stallion in the room. Blazing tried to speak up but the mare once again cut him off, "She isn't going to die Blazing, I love her more than Celestia loves the sun and if you don't feel the same way then why are you even here?" Rainbow said trotting back over to the bed and taking Spitfire's hoof in her own.

Blazing sighed. He didn't want to except the fact his sister might not come out of it, but after all the turmoil and shock...he'd found a new stage in this tragedy....acceptance. He shook his head, he never wanted to accept this, he trotted out of the room not wanting to be there at the current moment. Meanwhile Rainbow kept her place as she had been doing for the past week. She gently stroked Spitfire's mane as she let a few odd tears fall from her eyes.

"Please Spitfire, don't leave me I-I love you so much please..."

Rainbow felt a huge sinking feeling when she never got the response, even though the other attempts had been fruitless too she still felt that sinking feeling every time. Rainbow put her head on her forehooves and began to cry...hoping that something, anything would come from the mare she loved and bring an end to this nightmare...

A nightmare which only had a few more days to last...

To be Continued...
