Enlightenment
Chapter 5
Previous ChapterNext ChapterEnlighten woke up. He couldn’t remember anything from his dream. He never really did, unless there was something important to remember. He stepped out of bed putting down his left fore-leg first. “Ahh!” Enlighten screamed out of pure pain. Something about putting pressure on the leg hurt. He doubted that his parents heard anything, or that they are even awake.
He put his right leg down first this time. He could fake not feeling anything in his leg for a while. That was easy. Getting through the day would be difficult though. He got out of bed trying to put as little pressure on the leg as possible.
Enlighten didn’t have any plans for the day. Other than testing how powerful his spells get after turning into an alicorn. The day would go slow just like the rest. Nothing much to do other than finish some books and mess around with magic. The usual.
Celestia looked at the note again. After waking up for her duty as princess of the day, she remembered that Twilight sent her some note about a spell that didn’t even include using a horn. She decided to save it for the morning. Something like that didn’t seem possible or of enough interest to wake out of bed and look it over. Still if this was possible, who knows what would happen to the pony race from this kind of magic. She didn’t.
The note read as such.
“Dear Celestia,
I’m perfectly aware I shouldn’t be writing to you about lessons I have learned now that I am a princess myself. However, this isn’t about that.
A young filly came into my library earlier today and gave me some papers about a spell that seems to not use a horn in any way shape or form. It instead relies on a pony’s spirit and energy. This isn’t something I have seen before. I also don’t know how a spell like this is to be used.
Another thing to note is that the spell isn’t complete yet. At least it seems like that anyways.
I figured you would know more than I do on this. I included a complete copy of the spell with this letter. (I’m lucky I know spells for that. Otherwise this spell might have faded off before Anypony could figure out the true potential of this type of magic.) Hopefully you can figure this spell out.
Signed, Twilight.”
“Hmm, ok let’s see what kind of magic we have here.” Celestia said to herself. She looked over the many papers that had to do with this spell. Each one seems to relate back to this symbol on the one.
“A teleportation spell?” Celestia said. That was all she knew. That was all she could figure out at that moment. Anything else was beyond her.
She had heard of spirits and the possibilities of them before. The actual knowledge though, that’s something she never figured out.
“Who made this? He’d know something.” Celestia said. “This is something that I’d like to know about myself.”
Enlighten walked down the stairs. He didn’t really do anything about breakfast on the weekends. In fact he’d skip most of his meals.
“Hello, Enlighten.” His mother said behind him coming into the living room. “Hey, mom,” He said back. “What’s going on?” “Nothing much. I had a really weird dream where I fell from three hundred feet. How was yours?” “I can’t remember mine.” “Well you must remember something.” “No, I really don’t.” “Well alright.”
Enlighten got up and decided to head back upstairs and get ready for the day. There was nothing to do down on the first floor anyways.
When he got up stairs, he headed for the bathroom. He began to get his toothbrush out and just brush his teeth when his mother called for him. “What are you doing for breakfast?!” She said.
“Nothing!” Enlighten said. “Well you have to eat something.” Dream said back. “Why is that? It’s not like I HAVE to eat three meals a day.” “It’s healthy for you. Now get down here and eat something.” “Fine, give me a second.”
Celestia went to the kitchen to get herself some breakfast. Luna was in there as well. “Luna, why are you still up? Shouldn’t you have gone to bed by now?” Celestia said to her sister. “Oh. I just couldn’t fall asleep yet. I was actually getting some tea to help.”
Celestia looked over to the chef. “Just a muffin. I have something to do today that’s going to take me a while. I also need to get passed the advisers to allow me some time in the Canterlot library. The chef got to work right away.
“Why’s that?” Luna asked. “Just some new spell. It requires a newly discovered type of magic, and seems very interesting, despite not ever being heard of before.” Celestia responded. “Mind if I look over it? I mean I have nothing else to do while I’m awake.” Luna asked her older sister. “Sure, why not?” Celestia answered.
Enlighten got his breakfast, got ready for the day, and was now making plans to get into the Everfree forest and not get caught. Being in the Everfree was the easy part. Getting in was the hard. Most ponies see a colt walk in and freak out. Others don’t seem to care or not even notice. That’s a small percentage.
The only actual way in was to go through an opening just outside of ponyville. He just had to get there.
Enlighten was currently in his room thinking over how it could possibly be done. He did it million times before; he just couldn’t get caught today without anypony figuring out his new spell. Not like anypony knew he could make spells.
The simplest answer was to just use the alicorn transformation spell and fly over to the forest. Seemed like it could work. Maybe his illusion spell that he uses to hide his cutie mark could help. Just in case someone saw him. A glowing spot in the sky that moves seems a little out of place.
The plan should work. The only problem was being in the air. That’s why he didn’t want to do it. Only thing Enlighten could think of though.
“Alright,” He said to himself. “let’s do it.”
“Let me get this straight,” Luna said. She was trying to get the fact that a teleportation spell such as this could even be done. “it’s a spell that can teleport you to anywhere possible, as long as you have set a waypoint to there.” “From anywhere as well.” Celestia responded. “Seems a bit out there, but the spell would work if it was completed.” “Well you know more about this than I do.” Luna said to her sister. Luna was currently looking at the papers that had the spell on them. Celestia had said that the papers were there to figure out a precise way to actually do the spell. Any spell maker used papers and scrolls to help chart down their spells. It was a way to remember them later, and if they had made a mistake, fix it.
This was beyond her. Luna wasn’t one for making or studying magic. “You said Twilight has the originals right?” Luna asked Celestia. “Correct. The actual papers that the spell is written on are with Twilight. She is trying to figure out a way to finish the spell.” Celestia answered. “It seems like one of those spells that can go horribly wrong if done incorrectly, though. If she gets one thing wrong it could be the end of Equestria. Twilight better know what she’s doing.” Luna said.
That caught Celestia’s attention in a matter of seconds. The pure fact that anything could go wrong with a spell, that didn’t seem like a spell that should be toyed with. The exact thing that they are doing.
“Who showed her this?” Luna asked. “A young filly. That’s all I know.” Celestia responded. What were they doing? “Well that sounds great.” Luna said. She just sighed and continued to look at the papers again.
“Sister, how did you know that this spell could do something horribly wrong?” Celestia asked. “The symbol. It is usable enough, but if a single thing is changed or won’t match it, it’s over.” Luna answered. “How do you know that?” “I used enough of these spells before. Anything can happen.”
Enlighten was walking down the stairs. “Mom, I’m going out!” He yelled. “Alright! Be back soon!” Dream said back. “Got it!”
All he had to do is find some spot to use the spell. The thing takes two or three seconds to actually work. Nothing too major, it was just easily spotable. Maybe he could pass it off as messing with illusion spells if anypony saw. However, that would just create a chain of events that he didn’t want to happen.
Enlighten opened the door and walked out. Nothing left to do besides hide somewhere and use the spell. He started thinking of a spot while walking around. He was going to the field he was in yesterday. There had to be something around there.
Twilight was looking at the spell again. There was a bunch of stuff to this spell she had never known before. The problem was figuring it all out then using that knowledge to finish the spell. That’s what she wanted to finish the spell and see what it does. She just didn’t know how. There could be any way to do this.
“Are you still on that?” Spiked asked while he was walking into the room. “Well there’s got to be some way to figure this out.” Twilight said. “Twilight, this spell is beyond us.” Spike said. “I don’t mean you aren’t smart enough to figure it out, I mean this just isn’t something you aren’t used to. You just figured out about chakras yesterday and still don’t know what exactly they are for. You only know about so many types of magic, and this relies on some kind of spirit type of magic we never even heard of. You just can’t do this kind of thing yet. Wait for what Celestia says and maybe we can figure it out with her help.”
“EXCUSE ME!” Twilight yelled directly at Spike. “I think I can figure this out with a little more time. I not only found the elements, more than once, but used them to defeat multiple types of evil. Yet, I didn’t know anything about them.” “You knew about that type of magic.” Spike said. “You’re over reacting and letting curiosity get the best of you. You just need to relax.” “Ok fine.” Twilight said.
“Hmmmm… No one’s here. The sky’s completely clear. That’s strange. Usually one or two ponies are around here. Where is everyone?” Enlighten said to himself. He couldn’t quite figure out what was going on. Nopony was around. It’s an empty field. He should be able to see somepony around.
“Well no use being out in the open. This spell can probably be seen from a mile away.” Enlighten said. He got behind a rock and casted the alicorn transformation spell.
This time Enlighten left his eyes open. Big mistake. The thing nearly blinded him with a bright light source so close to his eyes. Normally he isn’t affected by lights shining in his eyes. This however was a bit too powerful.
After the spell was casted he felt the same power increase and the wings show up. This is definitely something he should use more often.
Enlighten took off into the sky and went straight for the opening he thought of earlier today. At that point he can get to a spot in the forest he uses for testing spells he couldn’t just use in his room. He goes there a lot. Not many monsters and nopony actually looks there.
It only took about seven to ten minutes to get there. Things are a lot easier to get to by sky rather than land. The only problem was that Enlighten saw the Cutie Mark Crusaders RIGHT THERE! The odds are unbelievably slim for this to happen. Life just loved to mess with him.
‘Maybe I can figure out a way around.’ Enlighten thought. The only reasonable thing to do was sneak around anyways. ‘Know what, they won’t even notice anyways. I’m just running for it.’ That thing always worked. Nopony cared what he did anyways. There are advantages for that.
Enlighten ran for the opening into the forest. Nopony would care anyways. Nopony ever did care.
“Hey is that Enlighten going into the Everfree forest?” Sweetie Belle asked. “What is he doing?” “Who cares about him? He does weird stuff all the time anyways.” Scootalo said. “He could get himself killed Scootalo.” Sweetie Belle said.
“Yeah we should go check it out.” Apple bloom said to the rest of the team.” “Alright let’s go into the forest that will eat us alive.” Scootalo said. “Better idea than anything else we can come up with.” Apple Bloom said.
Enlighten looked around the forest. He isn’t used to going in from that spot. He knew where to go, he just couldn’t figure out where the exact path was. The last thing you wanted was to end up on the wrong path in the Everfree.
Why was it even called that, Everfree. Kinda seemed a bit out there. It sounds good, until you figure out that it is untouched by pony magic, and anything will devour you alive. Maybe it has to do with the free roaming magic. This was definitely a spot to practice spells because of it.
After about fifteen minutes he got onto the right path straight towards the opening. Thing about being in the Everfree was he always got this weird feeling that something was watching him. Some demonic force. That could easily be passed off. There was no evil thing around that he could sense. If anything it wanted to HELP him.
“Finally I’m here.” He said. The opening was pretty basic. Just a normal forest opening in the middle of the woods. He did have a crystal grid set up to keep out any bad energy. That was something you didn’t want to mix with your own magic.
All he had to do now was go through a set of spells to see if there is any improvement with his magic. The first was the first spell he made. It was just to test things out.
A basic fireball spell. It can, however, be used to turn set your hoof on fire. Besides basic survival the spell had no purpose. The flaming hoof part was a glitch. The fire would form around your hoof if you move it faster than the fire. The spell can’t harm the user, so it instead forms around him or her, giving the illusion of being on fire. There really isn’t even a point to using that.
“Guess I’ll try it.” Enlighten said. He pointed the hoof right in front of him. Most of his spells required that he focuses his energy through his hooves. Others can be focus in the area around him. Such as the spell he was working on for warping, or even the alicorn transformation spell. He focused his energy and fired the spell right at the ground. Nothing seemed to change besides the spell was easier to cast and the fire was bigger than usual. That’s something. The fire went away with a simple thought. No need to burn the forest down.
He then decided to use the glitch. See how that worked. Enlighten once again fired the spell in the general direction of forward. It didn’t matter where he fired it anyways. He then put his hoof forward and the fire formed around it. The fire gave him a sense of power. Energy just filled his leg as he punched the air in front of him. It was actually great. He has never felt that kind of energy before.
He decided to try it on one of the trees. The only thing was he had to make sure it didn’t get burned. He didn’t want to harm the forest, just have it help.
Enlighten did the same thing. This time he hit the tree and a wide area caught on fire. Immediately he put it out with the same thought he had just used.
The fire was able to be put out quickly for safety reasons. The spells he made weren’t dangerous in any way shape or form. He still didn’t even know why he wasn't allowed to make spells. It’s the only thing he has to do all day.
His parents always get upset at him making them. Every time they say it’s dangerous, that he shouldn’t mess around with magic. He knows what he’s doing. Why can’t they ever trust him?! It doesn’t make sense!! Why do they hate him so much?!?!?
Every time, every day, they constantly complain about everything he does wrong. They nitpicked every little thing. They don’t even care about the stuff he does right.
If he gets all good grades in school with ONE fifty, they only care about the fifty. If he gets one thing wrong with a chore, and everything else is done perfectly, they constantly complain about the one thing wrong and never let it go. That would be fine if they actually cared about him.
The thing is they don’t! His dad constantly has the tone in his voice, like he can’t even stand his existence. Nothing about him. Every time his dad even looks at Enlighten, he always just stairs like Enlighten shouldn’t even be around him! SHOULDN’T EVEN BE HIS SON!!!
“I bet he wishes I wasn’t!” Enlighten yelled to himself. “Everything about me he hates! Not once did he even care! If I’m about to die, he wouldn’t care. All he would care about is me not bothering him about it! Many times I had something wrong with me, and he only wanted me to shut up about it! WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM!!!!!!! What’s wrong with me? Why does he hate me so much? I don’t get it. That’s the one thing I could never figure out! Why does everyone hate me?”
“Did anypony hear that?” Sweetie Belle asked. “Yeah came from over there.” Scootalo said. The CMC was looking through the woods for Enlighten. “I’m going to go check it out.” Sweetie bell said. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Apple Bloom asked. “I’ll be fine.” Sweetie said. She walked over to where heard the sound coming from.
Enlighten was deciding over the next spell to use. The only one he could think of was a spell he had created for the castle guard. He couldn’t even think of anything else. His memory was kind of bad.
The guard didn’t even look at it. Then again Enlighten should've known that beforehand.
It was a spell that creates a sword from pure energy. All you had to do was focus your energy through your hoof and toward the ground. The rest was too complicated for him to understand. All he knew was that it worked.
Enlighten casted the spell right after thinking about it. The ground started to ripple like water. The sword came right out of the middle of the ripple. It was on its side. The sword was sort of like his wings. The difference was that the sword was a brighter color and more transparent. The color almost matched his mane. There wasn’t anything to the sword though. It can shatter at any moment. That’s only to get rid of it, though. Besides that there isn’t any way to destroy it that Enlighten can figure out.
The sword didn’t seem to be any better as an alicorn. It was however easier to pick it up. Of course Enlighten didn’t use the levitation spell that most ponies used, unless he had to. He didn’t exactly grow into his magic yet. The spell he did use worked a lot better anyways.
Enlighten was practicing swinging the sword around. He didn’t know any actual way to wield a sword. Still holding one and using it was kind of fun.
Enlighten didn’t get too far into that when he heard something coming up to him. “I know you're there.” He said. “Just tell me where you are.” Unlike most ponies that didn’t bother to learn, Enlighten can sense life forms. That means being able to tell a pony from anything else. Just like most of his spells, this was easier as an alicorn.
“Well, I get to see you using your spells again in the same spot.” ‘SWEETIE!?’ Enlighten thought. “This is the second time. How did you know I was here?” He said to the filly. “I was wondering how you managed to get wings.” She said. “Oh that. That’s nothing.” “Doesn’t seem like it.”
“You wouldn’t even believe me anyways.” “You’re holding a clear transparent sword in your own magic, without using your horn. Nice touch on not having an aura around it.” “Thank you.” “Well, going to tell me?” “Ok, fine. I made a spell that can turn anypony into an alicorn.” “How did you do that?” “Long, hard work, a lot of research, and two years of getting it right.” “Nice!” “Want me to show you?” “I think I’m fine. Though, you can show yourself flying.”
Enlighten didn’t think much of it. He just lifted himself into the air with his wing and instantly was flying. “Nice! Now what were you yelling about?” Sweetie Belle asked. “Wait you heard that?” Enlighten said. “Not much.” Sweetie answered.
“Nothing.” Enlighten said “Just nothing.” “Why are you always like that?” Sweetie asked. “What?” Enlighten asked her. “You always keep to yourself. You don’t even let anypony else talk to you, or offer help.” “Like anypony would help.” “See you're still doing it. Enlighten just stayed quite. Sweetie didn’t hear anything from him for a few minutes.
‘Why is she even asking this? Why does she care?’ Enlighten asked. ‘Why would anypony care anyways? There’s no reason to. There’s no reason for her to ask these things. Nothing!’ Enlighten went on in his mind and didn’t talk.
“Fine, don’t answer.” Sweetie said. “Listen, I won’t tell anyone about the spell. I got to go. Want to come with?” “I’m fine.” Enlighten said. “Come on, it’ll be fine.” Sweetie said. “I’m fine.” Enlighten said. “Just come with.” Sweetie left the area, and Enlighten followed behind.
