Fear of the moon

Unto the forest of black

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

It was midnight somehow, earlier it was noon but now the moon was directly over head with no sign of the sun anywhere. There was a dark forest filled with dead trees and plants everywhere. All the trees and plants were black and looked like they were charred in a fire. Crows and ravens were everywhere and started sounding as a purple cloud flew from the moon and landed on the mud covered ground. The cloud started turning solid and eventually revealed its self to be Twilight. She groaned as she stood up.

“My head, wait where am I? Hello?!” she started wandering around checking the surroundings. She looked at all the plants around her.

“What are these things? These aren’t normal plants.” She froze as she heard a young filly crying in the distance.

“Hello?! Is some pony there? I must be hearing things-“The crying started again.

“Hello! I know your there where are you?!” She stopped and listened, she put her hoof up to her ear to amplify the noise, it took a while but she figured out where it was coming from, she started running towards it.

“Hello!? It’s alright I’m here-“ She followed the noise but there was nothing there. She turned around to head back to where she started but the crying reappeared. She groaned and started listening to it again. She followed it and this time ended up in a large opening.

“Hello! Who ever’s there, just stay where you are! If you keep moving I won’t be able to find you!”  She wondered around the opening waiting for the crying to start again. Right when it started the crows and ravens started cawing.

“Shhush!” She told them in an annoyed tone. She put her hoof to her ear, the crying was gone but she just waited there. And same as earlier right when it started the crows started cawing again.

“Shush, be quite!” She told them again. She held up her hoof one more time and again right when the crying started the crows interrupted. Twilight growled.

“I said shush!” She yelled as she picked up a rock and threw it at the bird sitting on a branch. The bird fell straight to the ground with a thud and started flapping its wings frantically and loudly cawing.  As it did that more birds flew out of the canopy and headed towards it.

“…Uhh, woops,” She said nervously. The black birds flew together into one giant cloud than attacked her. As they flew towards her she screamed and started running deeper into the forest. As she ran she came up with an idea. She raised her horn and teleported; the black birds did the same. They disappeared into thin air leaving nothing but a few feathers behind. When she was shore they were gone she poked her head out from behind a tree. She stood there breathing heavily, she sat down and attempted to catch her breath. When she stood back up the crying started again. She raised her hoof to her ear and closed her eyes. She listened closely to the sound. It was finally clear, she heard it, but it was farther away than it sounded. She opened her eyes and looked straight forward. She lowered her hoof. She was amazed  by how far away the filly really is. She walked to one of the many black wood trees.

“These are all hollow.” She started. “The sound goes to one tree and makes it echo, and another tree copies that sound. So all I have to do is keep by the trees and find out which tree is louder so I can tell how close it is to whoever’s crying.” She closed her eyes and listened. After a minute she opened her eyes again and headed left. She did that at every opening, and after 3 hours of wandering around she arrived at  a large opening with a single colossal tree in the center of it.

“Hello?”

“…Hello? Who are you?” a young filly replied.

“My name is Twilight Sparkle, I’m here to help you.”

“…No…no pony can help me.”

“How come?”

“We’re stuck here, as long as she watches over us.”

“She?”

“The mare, the one that brought you here.”

“Agony?”

“That’s her.”

“Listen stay where you are. I’ll be right there…where are you?”

“Behind the tree.”

“…uhh?”

“The big tree.” Twilight laughed nervously.

“Okay, uh, thanks, hold on.” Twilight ran over to the tree and headed towards the back of it, she looked down towards the roots and saw her, a small pony, a dark purple coat, black mane and tail, and deep purple eyes.

“You found me…” The young mare said with sadness

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I?”

“No pony has ever found me.”

“Why?”

“The mare wants me to suffer. She trapped me here years ago, and I’ve been here ever since.”

“Years? How many years?”

“Is Nightmare Moon back?”

“No, but Agony took her place.”

“…Oh…I’ve been trapped here for over ten thousand years.”

“Ten thousand years!?” Twilight shouted.

“Yeah, if you don’t escape than you’ll be trapped here to.”

“How old are you?” the filly started crying.

“I’m only eight.” She cried.

“How could you have been trapped here for this long? Nightmare Moon’s only been banished for a thousand.’

“It’s the tempest lock spell. She casted it on the jewel and now, when a day passes out there a year passes in here.”

“…A year?” The filly shook her head.

“Listen.” Twilight started as she held the filly’s head. “I promise I’ll get you out of here.”

“Really?”

“Yes, I will not let you spend any more of your life in here. I’ll get you out of here than we’ll battle Agony and stop her.” The filly whipped the tears away than hugged Twilight. She then picked her up and placed her on her back.

“Okay so which way do we go?” the filly pondered her thoughts than came up with a conclusion.

“We need to get up there.” She pointed to the purple moon.

“How do we get up there?”

“On the other end of the forest there’s a tower that leads up to the sky. Then there’s a bridge that leads straight to the moon.”

“Why didn’t you go there?”

“I was to scared.” Twilight smiled nervously as she walked into the brush.
