Shade sat there reading a book about Celestia and the sun, it was interesting to him how one pony had control over the source of all light on this world. To him she seemed almost =......Too powerful. “Shade.” He turned to Twilight and Dash.

“Greetings Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash. What is it?”

“Well it just that we want you to our friends.” Twilight smiled warmly. “Just so they know your here.” Shade nodded and took a step forward when Dash stopped him.

“Easy fella, we arn’t going to make you walk in the daylight. We’ll go get them and meet you back here ok?” He nodded again and stepped back. Twilight and Dash left and he returned to the book. Spike came down the stairs making Shade jump.

“For a dragon with short legs you move faster then I can in the dark.” Spike giggled a bit.

“Ya, so you better not try anything to hurt me or Twi.” He looked at Spike with his wide white eyes.

“What makes you think I would do that?” He tilted his head.

“Well look at you! You don’t look really friendly.” Shade looked at himself then nodded.

“Good point, but I haven’t hurt Twilight Sparkle or Rainbow Dash. Even when Rainbow Dash assaulted me.” Spike nodded.

“It must take a lot of self control to not lash out at her.”

“You have no idea.” He sighed and closed his eyes. Spike stared at him a while then spoke up.

"So.....Um.... Do you want to play a game?” He opened his eyes and stared at Spike.

“What kind of game?” Spike thought for a moment then snapped his scaly fingers.

“How about chess! You seem to have the kind of mind to play that!” Shade thought about this as Spike went to go get everything.

“Could you tell me the rules?”

Twilight and Dash walked though Ponyville in silence. Twilight spoke first. “So who should we see first?”

“Let’s get Rarity first. Then Pinkie and Applejack, then Fluttershy.” Twilight nodded as the came up to Rarity’s house. Dash knocked on the door.

“It’s open!” Came a cheerful voice. They both walked in and saw Rarity working on some cloths. “Oh hello Twilight! Rainbow Dash! What brings you two here?” Twilight thought about what to say when Dash spoke up.

“There’s a new pony in town thats kind of strange and we would like you and the others to meet him, if you could could you go on ahead and meet him at the library?” Rarity looked at the both of them for a while then nodded.

“Alright dears, let me put everything away and I’ll head on over.” As she was doing so Twilight and Dash left to go find the others. Rarity got everything put away quick and went out the door with some equipment. “Might as well make him a new suite to welcome him!”

“Your cheating,”

“How would you know?”

“You have more pieces on the board,”

“So? Thats how the game is played! You got to get all your rivals pieces off the board along with the king!”

“But you haven’t moved a single piece yet and I only have two more, the king and queen.”

“So I win!”

“Your cheating,”

Spike facepalmed. “Geez you like a broke record! Fine we’ll start over with the REAL rules.”

Shade broke a grin. “I knew you were cheating.” Spike put all the pieces on the board.

“You can’t blame a guy for having some fun.” He laughed. A knock sounded at the door. “It’s open!”

The door opened to a cheerful looking Rarity. “Hello Spiky-Wiky! Twilight and Dash told me about a new pony in Ponyville! So where is he-” She finally saw the large standing shadow looking down on Spike with it large white eyes.

“So tell me the real rules now.....Hello? Spike?” Spike was staring at Rarity, then he turned his head to Shade and back again.

“Rarity, Don’t freak out, I can explain everything!”

“Then why don’t you? I still want to play.” Shade cut in with a grumpy tone.

“Hold on Shade - WHA!” Spike suddenly shot over and behind Rarity. “Rarity?!” Rarity’s horn was glowing and she had a glare on her face. Spike jumped in front of her and extended his little arms. “Rarity stop your hurting him! He’s a friend!” She diden’t stop. “RARITY!”

“Rarity......Stop....” It was to late, Shade had melted and sunk under a bookshelf.

“Oh Twi is going to kill us....” Rarity let out a deep breath.

“You mind telling me what THAT was?!” Rarity looked down at Spike with a raised eyebrow.

“That WAS Shade, but you decided to melt him!”

“Who melted me?” The voice sounded strained and tired. From the floor a shadow rose out of the cracks and there stood Shade, his eyes seemed to be a bit staticy. “Oh, now I remember.” He looked at Rarity. “You must not listen well. Spike was trying to talk to you.” Rarity was dumbfounded.

“Ya! Rarity this is Shade, Shade this is Rarity.” Shade looked down at Spike.

“You recovered fast.” Spike giggled. Rarity looked down at Spike then to Shade.

“W-what are you?” Shade gave her a blank stare. Spike whispered in her ear.

“He dosin’t know himself.” Rarity nodded slowly looking back to Shade who seems to have recovered.

“So....Um Shade, why are you here?”

“I’m looking for a light that does not burn. Your magic does not seem to be it.” He let out a sigh and sat down on the other side of the chess board. “Do you know how to play without cheating?” He looked back up at Rarity.

“Why of course my dear. Here let me explain it to you.”
