Chapter 38: No turning back

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

I opened my eyes and they immediately stung from the oncoming wind. I was blaring down a long road. My back felt heavier. I looked up over my shoulder to see the skeletal figure I knew as Marrow. "We'll fuck, I'm back here."

"And just when did you leave?" Marrow yelled over the engine.

"Never mind. Just how much further is it?"

"I told you this road goes on forever. You need to be going incredibly. Beyond the sound barrier ring any bells?"

I looked down at the speedometer. "Then we're not getting anywhere with this; it tops at three-twenty."

"Focus monkey, I gave you that shit along your arm for a reason."

I leaned back and let the speed roll on. I dropped forward and twisted the gas handle. My arm glowed and the bike sped up.

"We still aren't getting anywhere." Marrow called down.

"Well what the hell else is there?"

"I said focus! Are you always this stupid?"

I glared at him over my shoulder, then turned around and pressed forward. I concentrated on being faster. The feeling of being pushed came from behind and the bike went even faster. Everything seemed to blur as we shot down the road. Something came into view from afar. A large wall. We neared and I braked and leaned to the side. The bike skid to a stop sideways.

"And here we are." Marrow said over me.

I stared up at it. Dozens of rotting corpses lined up the walls. Marrow hopped down and strut gleefully to the gate. I followed and watched as the gates slowly creaked open.

"First things first, if you're down here you've gotta change your look." Marrow snapped his fingers. "Well?"

"What?" I asked staring down at him.

"Well what do you think?" He asked looking me over.

I looked down to see the tattered remains of the suit replaced with dark scuffed jeans, a t-shirt, and my leather jacket. My shoes were replaced with a pair of red and white sneakers. I looked back at him.

"Here," He said handing me a pair of orange tinted sunglasses.

I took them and looked them over.

"A lot of this place is done up to deceive humans." He stated. Put those on and you see what it really looks like.

I braced myself and set them on the bridge of my nose. I adjusted them comfortably and looked up to the gate. instead of blood and bodies and hellfire I saw what looked like a nightclub scene.

"This is just too weird." I said shaking my head.

"Take a look over to that puddle." Marrow said pointing.

I walked over to it and looked down. Even my hair was different. It was styled up and I had side burns that were trimmed and sleek.

"C'mon monkey." Marrow said walking through the open doors to hell.

I followed through and everything seemed normal. It was like a market or carnival was going on. Stand after stand of food, games and people. Marrow lead his way through the throng of it and we were sucked in.

After minutes of walking, something caught my eye. A woman farther off was walking around naked. The fact she was naked wasn't what was catching me, it was her hair. Lengthy navy with pink and purple highlights. I split off from marrow and tried to follow her. Her pace heightened and I jogged and weaved to keep pace.

"Hey! Wait!" I yelled.

She didn't hear me and kept up. I followed ducking and weaving through people and stands. I knew it was her, once or twice I caught a glance of her rear and saw the same pink star surrounded by five white stars. The sound of Marrow yelling at me trailed off. "Where you going Monkey?"

I ignored him and kept chase. She kept taking turn after turn and I followed her trying to catch up.

"Please! Stop! I need to talk to you!" I called out.

She still didn't hear me. I continued on after her. I lost sight of her and stopped, frantically looking around. I spotted a glimpse of her in a crowd and dove in after. I lost sight again and stood up high trying to look for her. I saw her move along the edge of the crowd and turn to wave at me. It was definitely her.

"Twilight! Twiiiliiiight!" I ran after her.

Slipping between people and stalls I followed her onward.

I kept on losing her, but pressed on. I wasn't giving up. Then it hit me. I stopped and looked around. I saw her again. She had stopped too and was looking at me. She smiled and waved before walking off. I lightened my pace and kept on following her. She seemed to let up and instead walked. I followed on and saw her turn back to me then slip inside a building.

I went in after and saw the crowd moving around and talking. I weaved through and kept up as I spotted Twi move through it. I kept on toward the stairs as she went up them. I jogged up and walked through the door to be on the roof. Light and people were everywhere. Everyone having a good time. I looked around to see Twi stop and turn to me near the edge of the roof. I hurried after and she smiled as I neared.

"Twi, why were y-"

I was cut off as she faded and I stood there staring at nothing. My mouth hung open and I walked to the very spot she stood. I waved my hand through the open space. I felt something jump onto my back.

"Jeez Monkey, I thought you'd never stop. Nice view." He said looking over my head.

"Marrow , I...I thought I..."

"Ah, you saw her eh. Hmm, if I'm right that means she's thinking about you." He laughed. "We're in the underworld, Monkey. It messes with your head. Now let's get back on track." He said steering me toward the door.
