Chapter 61: What I feel

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

She took her spot on the couch while I crouched down to the bookshelf, looking for a specific book. I figured after last night she'd want to read it. I found the book and slid it out from it's firm spot near the end. I walked back to the couch and sat down comfortably. Twi leaned against me and looked down at the book. I opened it and read aloud.

"The Bauman Story," I began, turning the page. "Frontiersmen are not, as a rule, apt to be very superstitious. They lead lives too hard and practical, and have too little imagination in things spiritual and supernatural."

Twi clung to me as I reached the climax of the story.

"While thus waiting, his monstrous assailant, which must have been lurking in the woods, waiting for a chance to catch one of the adventurers unprepared, came silently up from behind, walking with long noiseless steps and seemingly still on two legs. Evidently unheard, it reached the man, and broke his neck by wrenching his head back with its fore paws, while it buried its teeth in his throat."

Her grip on my arm tightened as she imagined it.

"It had not eaten the body, but apparently had romped and gamboled around it in uncouth, ferocious glee, occasionally rolling over and over it; and had then fled back into the soundless depths of the woods.

Bauman, utterly unnerved and believing that the creature with which he had to deal was something either half human or half devil, some great goblin-beast, abandoned everything but his rifle and struck off at speed down the pass, not halting until he reached the beaver meadows where the hobbled ponies were still grazing. Mounting, he rode onwards through the night, until beyond reach of pursuit." and with that, I closed the book. "What d'you think?" I asked.

She shuddered and looked up to me smiling. "Humans really like there fictional stories, don't they?"

"Fiction? No, no ,no, that my dear Twilight was a true story." I joked.

Evidently, she took that seriously. "Remind me to never go camping again."

"Feel like reading that wendigo story?" I joked further.

"If it's any bit like that, I think I'll pass."

I reached my arm around her. "Good girl."

"Why do Humans seem to enjoy such...strange thing?" She asked uncomfortably.

I thought about it and shrugged.

She let out a soft sigh and looked off.

I had a weird thought popped into my head. "Hey Twi,"

"Yes?" She replied turning back to me.

"I probably should have done this a while ago, but I want to know. What do you feel when you're around me?" I asked.

She thought about it and looked up to me smiling. "Once…when I was a filly. My mom was telling me how she met my dad. I remember asking her how she knew, that he was the perfect colt for her.”

I raised a brow, wondering how that would answer my question.

Twilight looked up to me lovingly. “Butterflies,”

"Butterflies?" I thought curiously. "Hmmm."

“She said every time she saw him…every time she spoke to him, she felt butterflies in her stomach. A few years ago, I asked her again, and she said she still felt the butterflies…all these years later.” She smiled at me. "That's what I feel."

I nodded silently.

"Do you?" She asked.

"Feel butterflies?" I asked looking off a bit. "No."

She looked down and seemed sad, probably wishing she hadn't said anything.

"But I'll tell you what I do feel."

She perked up.

The corners of my mouth rising. "When I'm around you I feel soft, warm, happy." I raised a hand to the left side of my chest. "When we're together, I feel every beat of my heart."

She smiled and held tightly to my hand.

"Come here," I said with a soft smile. "I want to show you something."

She leaned in. "What?"

I placed my hands on her sides and pulled back.

"What are you doing?" She giggled. "Don't you think it's a little early for that?"

I rolled my eyes. "Not that. I said I wanted to show you something."

I lied down with her on top of me and breathed deeply. "What?" she asked

"Don't speak," I said softly. "Just listen. Feel."

She closed her eyes and rested her head on my shoulder. Her eyes were closed trying to focused.

Beat

Beat

Beat

She raised her head and looked at me smiling. "I feel it."

"That's good." I said quietly, my own eyes closed. "Let's just keep this up for a while."

She laid back down and breathed quietly. I matched her breathing and enjoyed one of those blissful moments you never want to end.

Unfortunately it did with a knocking.

"Mother fucker." I muttered.

Twilight got up and I hopped to my feet angrily. I walked over to it and cracked open the door to see Justin.

"What?" I asked irritatedly.

"Well?"

I let out a disgruntled sighed and opened the door further to step out and closed the door quickly.

"Now wasn't the best time man."

"I don't care." He said with a scowl. "Yes or no?"

"No alright. Fuck, why do always have to just piss me right the fuck off?"

"Whatever asshole." He said starting to walk off shaking his head.

"Where the hell do you think you're going?" I asked.

"To get Jeremy and take care shit." He said turning back around. "You can go back to your great new life and live your dreams. Reality check asshole, not everyone can just be lucky and have some great life."

"Fuck you."

"I'm sorry, what? I didn't catch that" He said stepping closer.

"I said fuck you." I stated flatly.

"What?" He said leaning in. "I-I can't hear you with that dick in your mouth, what?"

"I said FUCK YOU."

He looked back to me sourly. "I don't even care." He said starting back off.

"No, you're not."

"Well why the fuck not?" He asked turning back around.

"Because I've seen enough of my friends die, alright? What they did was because of me and that was my problem. I let it go and that's that. I'm not letting either of you die because you feel like being dumbasses."

He stared at me blankly.

"I've let one friend die and that's enough. Just go the fuck home. Reality check asshole, GROW THE FUCK UP!"

I turned back around and reached for the door handle.

"I'm sorry man." Justin said to me. "I'm tired of taking shit, alright? I'm just tired of it." I looked back to him. He had a frustrated expression. "You're right, alright. I'm sorry." With that he walked back across the street.

I sighed and opened the door, walking in and closing it behind me. Twilight looked to me from the couch. I sat back down beside her and held my head in my hands. I slouched forward with my elbows to my knees and stared at the floor silently. Twilight placed a hand on my back.

I sighed and looked back to her. "I took care of something and now it's done with. I'm done with it and I'm glad. All I want to do is spend time with you and put it behind me."

She smiled softly.
