Ch 2: They Can't Take What's Ours
Previous ChapterIt was a twinkly night out in Ponyville. Not a single cloud was seen in the sky and the Luna’s stars shown brightly in the sky, twinkling and mysterious. Twilight and Applejack had planned on a night outing to just make love under Luna’s beautiful stars.
They were both lying in a grassy field outside of Ponyville. They had been dating for almost about a year now, in the dark, away from the prying eyes of the world, but especially their own friends.
They were snuggling with each other, giving each other affectionate pecks on the cheek or passionate long kisses. The vibe of that evening was not right. It seemed as if somepony was watching them. They occasionally looked around to see if anypony was staring at them from afar. But nothing seemed out of the ordinary. It was quite a normal evening, but you could feel that something was just, off.
Right after they had had their “fun” they got up, and started to clean up where they had been lying down when they both heard hooves land softly on the ground behind them. They turned to see a blue Pegasus with a rainbow mane.
“Hey guys? Could you come with me to Sugarcube corner? There’s been something up there and I need your guys’ help.”
They looked at each other and both thought the same exact thing. Where the hell did she come from?
“Rainbow? Where did you come from? I didn’t hear or see you flying from anywhere. You just sort of.. Appeared here.” Twilight probably guessed that she was watching. She knew Rainbow’s tomboyish personality and knew that she was somewhat into mares.
“Look, there’s no time to explain! I need you guys to follow me and jus-“ Rainbow then got interrupted by Applejack
“We’re not going anywhere until you tell us what the buck is going on!” Applejack was in a angry mood.
Rainbow just took the words in. She slowly started to tip-hoof away and then just bolted! Taking off running she was no match for Applejack, an Earth Pony can run faster and longer than her Pegasus friend in front of her. Twilight followed behind her marefriend.
Rainbow Dash was running as fast are legs could take her. Speeding off of the grass and onto solid ground, her hoofs were starting to get tired. She lifted herself off the ground, flying fast, but not too fast as to let her friends keep her within their sights. Speeding through Ponyville was not the best thing to be doing in the middle of the evening hours, but she had no choice.
Sugarcube Corner had finally come into view. Her race was almost over when she heard a spark and a purple flash come from behind her back and a boom. Suddenly right in front of the door of Sugarcube Corner, a purple flash momentarily blinded Rainbow and the next thing she knew, she was heading straight towards Twilight. What soon followed was a crash.
The next thing Rainbow knew, there was a very angry Applejack running up to her as well as laying on top of a dazed, but somewhat angry Twilight. She heard the door of Sugarcube Corner fly open. Pinkie came quickly rushing out to help her fallen friend Twilight, as well as Rainbow Dash.
The next few minutes were mostly spent in confusion. Mostly wondering what in Equestria was going on. Twilight and Applejack stood in front of their best friends: Pinkie, Rarity, Fluttershy, and the still disoriented Rainbow Dash.
Twilight now knew what had happened. She knew that her secret had been spilled to someone. She didn’t how or who found out. But she had an idea.
She eyed directly at Rainbow Dash who raised a brow in return. Under all the stress she had been through the past few months, she did not want to be under any more. When will this suffering end? Thinking to herself she did not know what to expect from the situation they were in.
Twilight had been sitting with Applejack for quite some time around a table in silence as all her friends sat around the same table. Most of them had blank expressions on their faces but the look in their eyes had told it all. They both knew that this was obviously an intervention, but about what? They didn’t have the slightest idea.
Everypony sat there in silence. Everyone at the table eyeing each other, showering them with dirty looks of hate and giving the notion of I’m going to kill someone if some pony doesn’t start talking!
Until Rainbow Dash was the one to finally speak up and break the awkward silence,
“So. I saw these two mares sitting in the field outside of town, hugging and kissing! And I think that Twilight and Applejack should break up.” All the mares at the table didn’t even react that much. They all knew that there was something up between Twi and AJ. They all didn’t even try to act surprised, giving the two marefriends an even more awkward feeling.
“Ah don’t get what’s the big deal Rainbow? Ah was just givin’ Twi some comfort is all.” Even though a truthful pony, she couldn’t even lie. Since she really was giving Twilight comfort after all, she been giving Twi comfort for the past few months. After seeing her friend in as a horrible state as she was in, she couldn’t bare to see her like that. Alone, sad, even if she still had her brother this would not fill the void that was made in her heart.
The idea of a mare liking another mare was not a very foreign idea the six mares. They had seen this sort of interaction between two mares dozens of times. It was not a very common thing, but occasionally there would be couple they would meet that would be together like this.
Rarity of all had to have been the one that was disgusted by all these actions, seeing as she was supposed to be proper. She had slowly given the idea that a mare and mare cannot be together. It would have to be a mare and a stallion and all, ALL, ponies had to live by this rule.
“I think you two should break up. Being mare friends is just so unbecoming of you two.” Rarity was stifling a gag herself from even saying the word, mare friend.
“Look, ah don’t need no ponies tellin’ me how I live mah life. Ah’m sick of it and ah wish y’all never found out about this whole thing! Granny once said, ‘Be yourself, that’s all that matter.’ And that’s what Ah’ll stand on!” AJ couldn’t control herself anymore. She was getting angry at everypony, at fate, but most importantly at herself.
“Well fine!” Rainbow stomped her fore legs onto the table, making Fluttershy cower in fear underneath the table, “We’ll just sit here until you make a decision!” This entire ordeal was getting way too out of hoof.
“Well look, Ah’ve been a major help to Twi ever since her parents’ passin’. I know how hard it is to feel a loss so great that ya can’t even have the will to live anymore.” Applejack started tearing up. Glancing over to Twilight she saw that she was in tears as well, running down the purple unicorns face.
Applejack grabbed a hold of Twi and hugged her as hard as she could, feeling the warmth of her fur becoming moistened from the tears of the crying pony on her shoulders. AJ had grown slightly chaliced to missing her own parents, occasionally a stray tear would escape her eye, but this had been different. She hadn’t felt pain such as the kind she was feeling right now in years. The feeling all the suffering all over again from her mare friend being bombarded with insults, and threats of being told to break up.
She couldn’t help it anymore. The tears, the pain, it was all too much. Her endearing Twilight, she couldn’t do this anymore. Twilight had been living with this horrible guilt for quite sometime. Trying to make Applejack her only outlet of happiness, the crying mare didn’t even want to live. I don’t want to live. What the point of living if everypony is just going to make fun of you for being who you are?
Suddenly, the room had gone silent. All that could be heard was the heavy breathing from the silently sobbing Applejack. Twilight then looked up. The look in her eyes had literally no expression, almost as if a zombie had taken over her. Every mare at the table looked at her with concerned looks as she slowly walked over the kitchen. Silently shuffling slowly through the swing doors into the kitchen a minute she returned. Floating right beside her, engulfed in a purple aura was something that nopony could even imagine. A knife.
The horrific stares that Twilight was getting from every pony in the room didn’t even phase her in the slightest. Even Applejack was staring at her, too scared to even move. They all sat there in silence for a moment as Twilight stopped right in front of them, still holding the knife with her magic.
“It’s over.” Twilight said. No emotion in her voice.
“Wh-what d-do you m-mean?” Fluttershy was shaking and unwilling to move out of pure fear, thinking that Twilight will attack her if she tried to interfere with whatever she was about to do.
“I’m going to kill myself.” Her voice had been spoken in such a sound of authority. Every pony cringed at that sentence. Seeing the fear in all their eyes, even the ones of her lover, but fear had not been an option. She hoped to hopefully end all this pain and suffering that had been in her dark and gloomy world after all these months.
“Y-you can’t be serious!” Pinkie sort of fake laughed. “I-It’s a joke.. Right?”
“You think this is a joke? I’m serious!” The sincerity in Twilight’s eyes made the half smile on Pinkie’s face disappear.
“Look, Twi. Ya don’t hafta do this to yourself. Look! We can run away! We can start a new life together! Just us!” Applejack pleaded with the Purple mare. She was not about to lose the second thing that most dear to her in her entire life!
“I’m sorry, Applejack. It’s not worth the struggle of any of this anymore.”
“We ca-“ Applejack stopped.
Twilight took the knife and with her magic, stabbed herself right in the chest. Blood had burst out of her chest, trickling on to the floor. Blood had been spurted all over the other ponies as well. Rarity screamed out of pure horror from the blood that had splattered onto her clean white coat. The ponies witnessed the horrible sight in front of them and at that moment, everyone’s hearts fell into the deepest parts of their stomachs.
“AHH!” Twilight screamed as she repeatedly stabbed herself with the knife, her purple fur turning into a bloody red, as she splashed down into her own puddle of blood. Tears flowing out of her eyes, mixing into the pile under her, she laid there. Motionless for a second until coughing up more and more blood, her body finally gave up and she stopped moving all together. The magic purple aura that was engulfing the knife slowly started to burn out like a dying lightbulb. The last sound that came was a clink clank from the knife landing onto the floor.
“Hey, what’s going on down her-. AHHH!!!” Mrs. Cake screamed as she walked in to see the massive puddle of blood pooled up underneath Twilight’s lifeless body.
Applejack sat motionless for what seemed like millenniums. Staring at the body of her dead mare friend, she didn’t know what to say or think. She just sat, not being able to think., not being able to breathe until her body screamed at her to finally let the air out of her lungs. She did not feel pain, only confusion.
What would have come of this, if things had just gone differently? If something, anything, had gone differently. But no, it had to end like this for her, as well as the many moments of joy, gone forever to never be seen again from her mare friend. Now there was just a lifeless corpse of her friend lying in a puddle of blood, slowly sleeping into her fur.
It was over. Everything was over.
Another funeral, Applejack was sitting in the same building as for Twilight’s parents’ funeral a few months ago. Though it was only a few months ago, it seemed as if it had happened even when Celestia was a filly.
The ponies had left. Most of them had anyways; it was just the other four of her friends sitting beside her the entire time. They all had been silent the entire time, only sitting with her friend and their past friend, immersed in silence. Even Celestia herself had shown up to pay homage to such a terrible death. She had not yet known about what the cause of the death was. Since Twilight was wearing a dress that she would wear a lot when she had gone out with AJ, nopony could see the multiple wounds that were the cause of her death.
The 5 ponies sat there in silence, watching over their purple mare, tears running down all their faces. After what seemed like eons the five ponies broke up. Walking out the room one by one, with Applejack being in the back, she stopped at the door, staring once more at the brown, polished, wooden casket.
Once the casket had been prepared to leave the funeral home, Applejack asked if she could spend a few more moments with her. The sun was setting on the funeral room, casting a purplish twilight on the walls and inner walls.
She walked over to the closed casket, even though not wanting to see the face of her mare friend once more; she tried her best to fight the urge to just turn around and walk away and to never associate herself with her ever again, but she trudged on, going step by step and putting one hoof after another.
She slowly opened the casket, closing her eyes as if bracing for a slap in the face which never came. She stared solemnly at the lifeless body that still lay inside the casket.
“H-hi, Twi. Ah know ah haven’t been very happy the past few days.” She had to stop for a moment. Tears were sliding down her face, slowly dripping onto the body in the casket.
“If you can hear me, just give me a sign that you’re happy. Anything, Twi…” Sitting there in silence, you could hear a pin drop from across the entire room. It was then when Applejack felt something brush up against her. She opened her eyes, a bit frightened by what it was that just moved beside her.
Looking over she saw something she couldn’t even explain. Her mind had the stop for a few moments in its tracks to even comprehend what she was seeing at that moment.
“T-T-Twi?” Applejack stared at a perfectly looking Twilight. Her coat looked as if it had just had the greatest cleaning of a lifetime. Everything about her seemed to be glowing in a way. She was shimmering in the light of the sunset.
“Hi AJ. I’ve been watching you this entire time; all the sadness, the pain, the suffering that you’ve been going through. I hope you know that I’m happy. You don’t need to worry about how I’m feeling anymore. I still love you more than anything and I’ll be waiting for you soon. Just don’t do the things that I did, they were foolish decisions and I wish that I never done any of those. I’ll be watching over you though and most importantly, I’ll be right by your side the entire way. Never forget that AJ.”
Through her blurring tears, Applejack smiled for the first time since the death of Twilight Sparkle. The purple mare spoke once more,
“I love you Applejack.” And the purple aura touched Applejack. The warmth had started a fire once again in her heart. She knew this was real; there was no way this couldn’t be. Her body slightly tensed up as she felt the purple aura slowly consume her. The feeling of the warmth of her body against hers brought back all the timeless memories. The memories of them spending quiet moments together, sitting on the grass and watching sunsets together, or having some ‘fun’.
As soon as the memories flooded her mind the warmth had left. Applejack slowly wiped the blurring tears out of her eyes to see a receding Twilight Sparkle. Applejack stared at the wondrous sight.
“I’ll forever be by your side Applejack.” The final words were almost heard as a whisper as the aura left the room. As quietly it came, it left. Leaving no trace to show that anypony besides Applejack was in the room.
She stared once more in the casket and noticed something different. She looked at Twilight’s face and saw a smile painted clear as day.
Applejack smiled. Looking back towards the windows, she saw the purple sky of twilight. She smiled, though tears were running down her face, she was happy. She knew Twilight was happy and that’s all that mattered to her. She knew now that nothing could stop her in her tracks. Absolutely NOTHING!
She looked back down in the casket and gave Twilight a kiss on her smiling muzzle and slowly closed the casket and started to walk out. Stopping at the door, looking back once more at the casket she smiled and knew that she couldn’t be happier knowing that Twilight was happy.
Through the many long months of their relationship, they had been a happy couple. Hiding their times alone together from everypony had only brought them closer. No feelings of regret were in Applejack though, after this entire tragedy. She knew that after a long time, she would just move on like after her parents had died. Bearing one last look at the casket she looked away and trotted out the door into the Twilight sunset, a smile still on her face.
