Chapter 4: The butterfly and the statute
Previous ChapterNext ChapterBack on Vortis the Doctors and ponies and Techa were about to enter the temple. Then they noticed that the temple was under guard one Quark and Sontaran trooper blocked the entrance to it. The ponies were just close enough to hear, “Commander Storm my sensors report that one of our troops have been deactivated” the Quark guard said, Commander Storm gave a short laugh, “I admire these ponies, the bravery of idiots is bravery nonetheless” he said. The Doctors and the ponies got back out sight, “we’ll never get past both of them” Twilight said, “What we need is a distraction” Jo’s Doctor said, after some thought.
Then Jo’s Doctor noticed herd of Zarbi nearby, “Miss Applejack care to cause a little noise to distract those two?” he asked, “I can do that lickety spilt Doctor” Applejack replied, “Be careful AJ” Twilight said, “I will Twi” Applejack replied and with that she jumped onto the back of one of the Zarbis which reared up in surprise,
“if you have trouble with the Sontarans just hit the back of their neck” Grace’s Doctor said,
“Gotha Doctor” Applejack replied, she dug her back leg into the Zarbis side causing it and most of the herb to scuttle off with Applejack riding the lead Zarbi off away from the temple. The Quark and Sontaran looked towards where the sound of the Zarbi had come from, “my sensors are picking up some disturbance to the south west of us” the Quark said, “We must investigate” Commander Storm replied. When both the Quark and Sontaran had left their posts both the Doctors, Jo, Grace and Twilight sneaked into the temple. When they got inside Applejack caught up with them she said she had let the Zarbi lead both the guards away from the temple. Inside the temple a long passage stretched away from the ponies stone statues stood on stands along the walls of the passage. “The segment must be at the end of the passage” Jo’s Doctor said, and he, Grace’s Doctor and their friends started off down the passage, “how strange…” Twilight thought looking closely at the statues, “These don’t look like Menoptera”, “you alright Twilight?” Grace’s Doctor asked, “Yes I’m fine” Twilight replied, brushing away her concern about the statues. She followed the rest of the ponies when she had turned away from the statue it turned its head to look after the ponies. Oblivious to the danger around them the Doctors and their friends reached the end of the passage. The great jewel stood on a pedestal the jewel like its name suggested was a heat shaped diamond shining with some kind of green energy, “is this the segment then?” asked Applejack, “the sonic screwdriver seems to think so” Grace’s Doctor said, checking his screwdriver, “I think I should just check to make sure” Jo’s Doctor interjected, “Be my guest” Grace’s Doctor said. Jo’s Doctor touched his screwdriver to the great heat jewel and in a flash white the jewel turn into the first key of time segment, “so the jewel was just an illusion” Techa said a bit surprised, “so it would seem” Twilight said. Then there was a sound of scraping stone on the floor behind them. The ponies and Techa turned to the source of the noise and what Twilight saw made her fell like her blood had turned to ice. The statues that had stood at the sides of the passage had somehow got off their stands and now stood inches away from them their faces were twisted in a horrifying snarl. Twilight recognized them immediately, “Weeping Pegasi” she said, “weeping what?” Jo’s Doctor asked, “Look at them, don’t blink” Twilight replied, “they can’t move if you’re looking at them” she explained quickly “who blinks…” said Lyra “…I’m too scared to blink” “you heard Miss Sparkle” Jo’s Doctor said “keep looking at them” he continued. Grace’s Doctor, Twilight, Applejack, Lyra, Colgate, Jo, Grace and Techa all locked their eyes on the Pegasi, “if these statue things have been here all this time” Grace said, without turning to her Doctor, “why haven’t they attacked until now?” she finished, “I was just thinking that to” Jo chipped in “because the great jewel must have been projecting same sort force keeping them back” Grace’s Doctor replied, “and now we’ve uncovered the segment there is no field preventing them from attacking us” Jo’s Doctor finished grabbing the segment and putting it in one of his pockets, “I think we should leave now” he said, “agreed” Grace’s Doctor nodded, “all we to do is keep looking at them” Jo’s Doctor said, “easier said than done Doctor” Twilight said, remembering the first time she had encountered the Weeping Pegasi. Still keeping their eyes on the Pegasi the ponies and Techa moved slowly but quickly around them. When they had got around them they made for the temple entrance still keeping their eyes on the statues but just as they reached the entrance the ponies heard a shout they turned to see Techa a Weeping Pegasi had its hoof around Techa’s neck, “you’ve got to leave me Doctor” he said, “this creature can’t let me go, not while your all looking at it” he continued, “Can’t you squeeze out?” Grace’s Doctor asked, “No it’s too tight” Techa replied, “We can’t just leave him” Colgate said, franticly, “You have to leave me” Techa repeated, “but you’ll die” Grace’s Doctor said, using his sonic screwdriver to try and somehow loosen the Pegasi’s grip, “I’ll die in the knowledge that my courage did not desert at the end” Techa replied, tears forming in his eyes, “I wish I’d known you better Techa” Jo’s Doctor said, “I think Doctor you know at my best” Techa said smiling sadly, “ready?” Grace’s Doctor asked, “Contented” Techa said, closing his eyes. The ponies turned away and ran from the temple entrance as they got to it Twilight heard the sound of bone breaking and she know what had happen to Techa, “we need to stop the Pegasi from getting out of the temple” Twilight said, “don’t worry about that Miss Sparkle” Jo’s Doctor said. Both he and Grace’s Doctor pointed their sonic screwdrivers at the top of the temple’s entrance and with a single zap of both sonics the temple’s entrance collapsed, “halt!” a voice shouted, the ponies turned to see a platoon of both Sontaran and Quark troopers, they all had their weapons pointing at the ponies, “Commander Storm I presume” Grace’s Doctor said, “we will take the key segment” Field Major Kaarsh said stepping in front of the Commander, “you’re a long way from the war aren’t you Kaarsh” Jo’s Doctor said, “what war?” Lyra asked, “A war between the Sontarans and the Rutans” Grace’s Doctor explained, “It’s been raging far out in the stars”, Jo’s Doctor finished “The master will help us crush the Rutans” Commander Storm said triumphantly. Then from behind the ponies there was a that sounded like stone hitting rock, “the Pegasi are trying to break out” Twilight said, “hand over the segment and we will let you live” Field Major Kaarsh order, “absolutely not” Jo’s Doctor said, “take aim” Commander Storm barked Twilight’s horn glowed raspberry coloured as she prepared a teleportation spell and before both Sontarans or Quarks could fire their weapons all the ponies disappeared in a flash of light. The ponies reappeared in the clearing where the two Tardises had landed, “That was amazing Miss Sparkle!” Grace’s Doctor said, “I hope you do that again” Twilight said rubbing her horn, “We’d better get going before the Sontarans and Quarks know where we went” Jo’s Doctor said, “Just one thing to do first” Grace’s Doctor said, “Right” said Jo’s Doctor and both Grace’s and Jo’s Doctors closed their eyes. “Contact” they both said. After some time the Doctors opened their eyes, “Alright let’s go” Grace’s Doctor said and with that the Doctors and their friends dashed into their respected Tardises. Lyra and Colgate followed Jo’s Doctor, Jo and Applejack into Jo’s Doctors Tardis. “This Tardis is a lot different than our Doctor’s” Lyra said, gazing around Jo’s Doctor’s Tardis control room. “It could look a bit more colourful” Colgate said, “I have tried to redesign the control room” Jo’s Doctor said who was busy at the console with the Quark robot’s head, “but that’s the thing about computers, no imagination” he sighed.
