It all started when Twilight's friends got called (by a map that sprung up in the middle of Twilight's Castle) to a village where everypony was basically the same. Down to the attitudes, and the cutie marks (taken away to be replaced with an equals sign).

All of this was to conform to the frankly scary views on friendship by the town founder.

When you meet somepony who should be your friend
The two of you must make sure you don't bring that to an end!
