Chapter One: Inkwell's New Assignment

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The moon was shining brightly in the calm clear night, in the Moonlight Castle (formally the ancient castle of the Royal Sisters,) a blue unicorn with a long brown mane and round glasses covering her spindrift eyes was sitting at an oak table in a huge library. Her cutie mark was a quill that was blue of a different shade with 3 squiggles in rows as if the quill wrote on her flank. The unicorn had a notebook open in front of her with blank pages, she rested her head on her left hoof that propped her up, her eyes dull with boredom.

A baby hedgehog, no bigger then a toy mouse, scurried across the table and sniffed the paper with curiosity. He yawned, scurried to the blue and brown unicorn's left hoof and nuzzles it with a squeak.

The unicorn glanced over at the spiky animal and her dull expression somewhat disappeared with a faint smile. With her right hoof, the unicorn patted the hedgehog's tiny head ever so lightly. "Thanks for the support Quinny..." she murmured, "I just can't come up with the right ideas..."

A sneeze was Quinn's response.

The unicorn frowned and looked back at the blank notebook in front of her, "Ah...I hate writer's block...it's just as bad as artist's block..." she put her head down on top of the note book and growled in a frustrated manner, "My last book was published two months ago! Everyone is expecting something from me, and I can't give it to them!"

"Oh dear...Inkwell, are you alright?"

Immediately, Inkwell sat straight up and whirled around to see none other than Princess Luna. Inkwell then bowed in respect, "Princess Luna! I-I wasn't expecting you!"

Luna smiled, "Rise my fateful protégé, I have a new assignment that only you can do for me."

Inkwell then stood up, picking Quinn with her magic, (A spindrift color aura), and put him on her back, "Yes Princess?"

Luna sat down, "Do you know the big celebration coming up?"

"The 30th anniversary of the New Lunar Republic becoming a monarchy?"

"That's right," Luna said with a nod, "And you are a writer...correct?"

Inkwell nodded, "Yes?" she frowned, "What's this about princess?"

"As you know, the New Lunar Republic was lasted for centuries...but this celebration is for the day we as republic became a monarchy..." she stood up and began to walk to her throne room, "I would like you to write a short book on the celebration based on your experience..."

Inkwell gasped as her eyes widened, "Are you serious?"

"Yes! I'm going to send you to the 1st squad of our own military, they are actually lending a hoof in the celebration!" Luna exclaimed.

Inkwell was elated at first, "I don't know what to say!" but her elation faded and was replaced with doubt, "But..."

Luna frowned, "But what?"

Inkwell's ears lowered, "Where do I begin?" she walked over to the nearest window and glanced up at the bright moon, "First off, the 1st squad is extremely private! They don't exactly give clearance to their headquarters to anyone..."

Luna nodded, "I understand, you needn't worry, I used my royal power to get you in...they know who you are."

"There is also the matter of finding a good publisher and illustrator, since my usual publisher and illustrator are on vacation at the Moonlight Tropical Resort." Inkwell told her mentor.

"I have sent word to the greatest artist and publisher in Moonville, you do know where that is, don't you?" Luna asked.

Inkwell nodded, "Of course, Moonville is 1 mile away from Everfree City, I can walk there in my sleep...but..."

"But what?"

"My final concern, what if...the Solar Empire try to...crash the celebration...? I mean, maybe it's just me...but...hasn't Princess Sunset gotten a bit more...aggressive since the last battle?"

Luna then sighed, "Even though me and Sunset Shimmer set up rules all those years ago...they still get broken constantly..." she walked over to the same window and stared out into the vast moonlit city, "I wish my sister was here...she would know what to do..."

Inkwell glanced at her princess, "I never knew Celestia...but I know this...she believed in you...in a way...she still does...she knows you can do this...and she's always there beside you...even if you can't see her..."

Luna looked back at Inkwell, smiling with tears in her eyes, "Yes...I do believe you are correct Ink..."

Inkwell smiled back, "It's true..." she looked over to the entrance of the castle, "Now...I do believe I must get going...there is a story to be written!"

"Right right..." Luna handed Inkwell a map with an address, "Go to this address in Moonville, you'll be staying there during your assignment..."

Inkwell trotted to the door and dashed off into the calm clear night...
