Falling for a Mail Mare
Chapter 7 - The day an author went to a ball
Previous ChapterNext ChapterA few days later Derpy came by house again with a package from my editor. We talked some but she had a busy day ahead of her and her route couldn't allow me to be her last customer. I didn't mind since I knew our next date was just a few days away. Derpy seemed happy and she knew I would understand. I opened the package and saw a letter with my now edited book. I opened the letter and read what my editor had wrote. In the letter he said that this latest book was my best yet, however, he didn't understand why I couldn't write the final chapter. He complimented me that he barely edited my book and said I better go ahead and finish the book despite being months ahead of schedule. I quickly put the now edited book on the desk and looked at what he had edited. After skimming thru the book I quickly noticed something of what I had wrote. I wrote my character meeting a fictional Derpy. I didn't understand why I hadn't noticed till now. Did I just not read what I wrote? I never do that, I always reread what I write. Not only that, I did that for almost the entire book... But, I wrote that my character became great friends with Derpy and was about to leave the town. He hadn't fallen in love and I didn't understand why. I realized instantly, my main character is not written or even supposed to me. I just created a character with a personality I liked... I've never wrote him to be me or even to be like me. At that moment, I knew how to end the book. I quickly wrote the final chapter. The final chapter had my main character having one last evening together as friends in front of the fireplace. It made me tear up writing it. Just a few hours later, I was done and quickly wrapped my book up and went off to the post office.
“Hello?” I said as I entered the post office.
“Hello! Welcome to the Ponyville Post Office!” exclaimed a filly's voice.
“Dinky? What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I'm here to help mommy today!”
“Haha... Where is your mom, Dinky?”
“I'm right here.” she said as she walked in from the back door.
“Hey there, I have another package to send.”
“Oh, did you figure out that final chapter?”
“Yeah I did. Say, what is Dinky doing here?”
“I'm here to help Mommy, I already told you!”
“Heh heh, She's the reason why my route's a little different today. She's just here because she likes to see me work and there's not much mail today.”
“So you're working at the post office for the rest of the day?”
“Yes”
“Hey hey hey! Is that a package? Want me to send it? Huh huh huh?”
“Sure.”
She tried to put on the serious face the little filly could and then said, “That will be 25 bits Mister Red.”
“Hahaha...here ya go.”
“Don't laugh at me! I'm super serious!”
Me and Derpy shared a good laugh and then I left the post office. Before I knew it, it was the day of our third date. I then realized something, we had been dating for a month now. Realizing I had plenty of time on my hands I went to the flower shop and got a full bouquet. I didn't understand why I didn't do this earlier. Oh well... I then greeted her and we went to another dinner. We had a wonderful time. We talked for a few hours and before we knew it the day was almost done I then escorted her home. We agreed to another date and hugged each other and then I went back to my house. It was the next day when something unexpected happened. Derpy came by, delivering a letter from my publisher. I thanked her and saw a most unexpected surprise. Apparently without my consent, my editor showed my publisher my latest book and he loved it so much even though I haven't approved the final editing. Despite that, my editor will get the last edited version to me for approval and it will get here tomorrow. The interesting part was that in the letter was two tickets to a Manehatten Ball. Seeing these tickets confused me at first. He should know I'm not a party goer and definitely not a ball goer. Heck, I don't even have a tux. I was lost in thought for a second and then gave up. Guess I could rent one... I got some more money for the publisher last week and I still have plenty of groceries. I looked at the time, Derpy wouldn't be done with her shift just yet, and I don't know if she would want to even go to the ball. I thought about it some more... the ball was a week away.... I don't how to dance... it would be romantic....Darn... well since her shift is still happening right now... maybe I should go see if there is a place in Ponyville where I can rent a tux. I spent the next few hours trying to find a place and was surprised to find one in Ponyville. The owner allowed me to reserve one but I would only need to pay on the day I needed it. I thanked him and looked at the time. Her shift should be done... time to go ask her. I went and knocked at her door. She opened it, surprised and questioned why I was here since our date was tomorrow when she was off work.
“Well Derpy I was wondering, well, if we could delay our date tomorrow.”
“Oh my, did something happen?”
“You could say that...”
“Well, please come in at least.”
We then both went the house and I sat down on her couch. She made some tea and then I spoke up after she was done.
“Well, something very unexpected happened to me today.”
“Oh really.”
“Yeah, remember the letter you delivered to me earlier today?
“Yeah, did something happen?”
“It was from my publisher, he saw my latest book and so happy with it even though I haven't approved the final editing. He then sent me a gift in the letter.”
“Oh really, what's the gift?”
“It's.... two tickets to the Manehatten Ball.”
“The what?! The ball......?” she said with a shocked face.
“Yeah, and I was wondering if you could go to it with me. If you don't want to, its okay. I'm not a ball goer myself or even a party goer.”
“I...I would love to. I've always wanted to go to a ball.”
“Really?!”
“Yeah, ever since I was a filly. I never imagined I would get a chance to.”
“...Then's let's go.”
“Really?! Are you sure?”
“I can tell Derpy that you really want it, I would be a horrible boyfriend if I didn't let you go to the ball with me.”
She began tearing up, “Thank you” she said softly.
“Well, why don't tomorrow we go get you a dress?”
“Really?!”
“Yeah, I got some extra money recently, so we can definitely do it, I already went ahead and reserved myself a tux.”
“You did?”
“Yeah, just in case.”
“Okay, we'll go by Rarity's Boutique tomorrow, alright?”
“Um, well, where is that?”
“Oh right, stallions usually don't go there, just come to my house tomorrow alright?”
“Okay.”
The next day...
I walked to Derpy's house and then we went to the Boutique. There I met a white and very shiny, dressed-up unicorn. She must be Rarity.
“Oh my, how unexpected, what are doing here Derpy?”
“I need a dress for a ball in Manehatten, Miss Rarity.”
“Oh my, a ball darling? Well I'm glad you came to me, I will get you the perfect dress.”
“Thank you so much!”
“And who might you be?”
“Oh sorry, I'm um, Red Feather.”
“Red Feather.... You mean the Red Feather, author of 'Days among the Pony World' series?”
“Um yes, are you fan?”
“Oh yes, Twilight introduced me to your series and I love it dear. She told me you now live here in Ponyville but I never met you till now.”
“I've only been here for about two months. Anyways, we are here for a dress Miss Rarity.” I could tell Derpy was about to get a little jealous.
“Oh right, I'm so sorry Derpy darling.” she said and quickly rushed into her parlor and came back with all sorts of sewing equipment.
“Let's take your sizes dear.”
“Okay”
The next few hours were her going over and over Derpy, figuring out the dress. Her prices were pretty reasonable. We thanked her and she assured us it would be ready by next week.
“Miss Rarity sure is generous, huh?”
“Yes, though she's a bit, how do I say, too demanding for my taste.”
“You do realize that the ponies at the ball are going to act like her, right.”
“Yeah, I know, but I'll be with you and that's more than enough.”
She blushed and said, “Thanks Red.”
Before I knew it the week had passed and it was time for the ball. My editor sent me the final edit and I accepted it earlier in the week. I then went to Derpy's house. We went to the boutique in the morning and then it happened, Derpy came out in that dress. She looked incredible.... I felt like I was about to faint from seeing her.
“You're.....you're beautiful Derpy.”
She blushed yet again, “Thanks Red.”
“He's absolutely right darling, you look marvelous.”
“Thanks Miss Rairty.”
We then proceeded to Manehatten for the ball. And man, the place was packed. The ballroom was filled with ponies. Very soon, the dancing began and we got on the dance floor. We both admitted we didn't know how to dance but we didn't care. We did a slow dance in front of everyone. She was so beautiful, I couldn't keep my eyes off her. Before I knew it, I kissed her, I kissed her for a long time. We both were fully red as out mouths went away from each other only to then realize everyone was looking at us. Then, they started clapping. We both looked at each other and then the host immediately started to yell, “Let's give up for that lovely couple, showing true love here!” We both blushed almost to death for a good hour and then the ball was over. We left admitting we had a wonderful time. We went home to Ponyville and Derpy thanked me over and over for letting her go to the ball. I kissed her again and then escorted her home. Then, I went home, man what a night!!!
