This story takes place after Rainbow Rocks
It was sunrise. Princess Celestia's beautiful sun shined, it's light the perfect shades of yellow, orange and red. There was the most stunning view of Ponyville from this angle because of how the light shimmered back up from Sweet Apple Acres. There was a train coming in from Rainbow Falls and aboard it was a cobalt-blue stallion amongst other travelers. The train ride had taken until 1:00 pm just to get to his favourite view of Ponyville because of an accidental derailing. However the buffalo who where responsible apologized and it was a misunderstanding. After being assisted by a small female buffalo with a feather in her mane, the train was flipped back on the tracks. It was a good thing that nopony or his luggage were damaged. Nothing was going to ruin this sunny day for him! This week was going to be awesome, no perfect!
The train arrived in Ponyville at 1:30pm. He looked around at all the new friendly faces. He had only been to Ponyville once before, briefly though. He could still see that the village was special though. Especially with the Equestria heroes the ''Mane 6'' formerly living there, even though he didn't know much about them 'cept for Rarity. He took martial arts lessons from her for 2 years when he visited her Manehattan store. ''Dam she's really strong'' he thought. ''And pretty''. He continued walking. A large red stallion with a half apple cutie mark through him a free apple.
''Thanks dude. I heard good things about your farm''
''Eeyup'' said a deep voice.
Then the blue earth pony waved and dragged his luggage to a large, oak tree near the edge of Ponyville. He took out a poster. Two days ago DJ Pon3 had arranged for a musical competition to be held in Ponyville. He couldn't believe that not only had she request that he be part of the competition, but an offer to stay as her partner! Dream come true.
''Me and Vinyl Scratch makin' the partay epic'' he thought. ''Booyah!'' He had heard all of Pon3's song from her new album "Vinylicious". His favourite being music to my ears. Speaking of which her voice was epic!
"I think I'm developing a fan crush on her. I should really talk out loud less" he couldn't help but contemplate things. Even things that were odd. "Oh wow" he looked up to the sky. "I've been here for a bit it's already 3:30pm. I better find that hotel." If he didn't have his 6th sense for time, his carefree and at sometimes slightly reckless lifestyle would ruin his schedule.
He stood up from his comfortable position and started trotting towards the inside of town. Immersed deeply in thought the young stallion walked blindly while still daydreaming and reading Vinyl's ad. He didn't even realized the made in front of him until-" Wham"!
"I'm so sorry. I guess you can't say that my first impressions don't have an impact on -". He burst out laughing but calmed down when the yellow unicorn glared at him.
She looked at him then into his eyes. Her glares intensity reversed completely. She still sat on her flank. The stallion reached over and extended his hoof. She hesistently accepted and was pulled up. The made moaned in pain, gripping her head.
" I hope they have helmets where your from" she said with a bit of attitude, but he could tell she was being friendly.
" Yes, I actually do but it does more then protect my skull." He pulled an aqua, white and orange helmet out of his bag.
"I'm Electric Spectrum or DJ Rush. I'm from Rainbow Falls filled with so many wonders like sunshine, lolipops, and rainbows" he said with a colourful sounding modified voice.
He pulled out the lenses and put back the helmet. He put the lenses on his mane which doubled as sunglasses. The made just slowly nodded. No reply just a deeper stare. He thought it was possible that she was a fan of his. The way she was looking at him. He felt a bit proud, in an odd stallionly way.
"Oh I heard of you little miss sunshine. Name's Rush Cobalt I'm new to Ponyville. Sunset Shimmer right? Umm..... Sunny? " She had been nicknamed by him. She knew that she had a crush for sure when she felt like she was melting inside. Her horn released small amounts of pink magic as hercheart started to race.
"Sunset Shimmer's a pretty name, it matches you perfectly."
He meant what he said but nothing more although he found her filly-like expression adorable especially now. The compliment changed her gaze to a heavy blush, her checks matching her Mane's streaks. Sunset's eyes veered randomly as she tried to look away from him, failing. His cocky smirking wasn't helping her feelings or the situation. Flash Sentry had never made her feel this way. She finally snapped out of it and hit Rush in the shoulder, as that was the first reaction that came to mind.
"What was that for?" he said confused.
"We're even now. You ran into me and-"
"I get it now." She gasped as he continued. "It was my joke. Sorry if somepony doesn't find it punny" he giggled and Sunset sighed.
It annoyed her a bit but he was growing on her. She hit him again and smiled.
They sat under the large tree together and talked for hours until it was 8:30pm. The sun would be setting soon. Sunset Shimmer has never been so excited and nervous at the same time. She hadn't made any friends since she travelled back to Equestrian to visit Twilight. There was so many thoughts rushing through her head. She was thinking she could ask him to be her special somepony at the hearts and hooves competition.
"Uh Rush?"
"Ya Sunny?" Sunset Shimmer blushed.
"Could you go with me? I know it'll be more fun if we go together. If you want to spend hearts and hooves day with me?" Rush laughed.
"Want to?"
"I should of known." She started to cry quietly.
"I didn't get to finish silly filly. We're friends of course I want to. No better way to spend a holiday then with a friend. Especially since I have a special somepony. I'll do whatever I can to keep you smiling." Sunset's mood lightened up.
"I've only known you for a day but I didn't need that long to know you're awesome. Wait a minute. Not that I object, but isn't this a date? Are you asking me out?"
"I, um. No!" She was acting adorable again so he disregarded her awkwardness yet again. Mares.
"Well sorry to rush Sunny but I need to get to my hotel. It's getting late so-"
"I have another room you could stay with me at my house!" Sunset interrupted. It was her chance to be able to get close to him (yes literally too). She felt like hitting herself for almost saying that out loud.
"If you're sure I won't be any trouble then why not." He said nonchalantly not knowing what she intended. She wished he was slightly less dense so she wouldn't have to spell it out.
10 Minutes later
"Datum. This place is tight" he said while examining the house.
The outside looked average, but the interior. Fab-u-lus like some of Rarity's work. With less ribbons, shine and purple.
"Thanks. It was a gift from Princess Celestia when I moved here." she said sadly.
"Whoa Celestia herself!" Rush almost jumped. "Oh yeah you were her student. What's she like?"
Rush Cobalt didn't get a cutie mark for psychology but he sensed something was troubling her. She began to tear up. It looked as if his words punched a hole through her heart and she was about cry. Rush did the only thing he could think of and hugged her. Sunset's cheeks glowed bright red.
"I'm sorry for bringing it up. I'm a screw up. I'll leave if you want me to. " his enthusiasm faded away.
"I didn't mean to hurt or offend you." he slowly, and quietly said. She grabbed his hoof as he turned away.
"None taken. I'm just a mess right now. I still feel terrible about my past but now I get to rewrite with you."
"Awww." he teased.
"I know I'll be fine as long as you're here. Rush. I really like you-around so don't leave me. I'm new to this friendship thing but I know enough to see you're a cool stallion." Both ponies smiled. They walked outside to gaze at her namesake.
"Despite my headache I had a great day Rush."
"Me too. Look at all the beautiful colors. Reminds me of somepony I know except it's the second most beautiful thing I've seen today." he said winking and teasing her. He loved her reactions to his compliments, even though it bothered him that he hadn't clue why they were so cute. Her gaze feel to the ground. They trotted back inside.
"Never grow up" Sunset said while hitting him on the shoulder.
"I'd never dream of it . My imaagination isn't that great. Besides I usually dream of donuts or cotton candy. Mmm so tasty..." he almost started drooling.
Reminiscent of everypony's favourite incompetent sector 7G employee. Sunset Shimmer chuckled and showed him the spare room across from hers.
"Wait a minute was that a compliment miss sassy pants? What was that supposed to mean!?"
"Goodnight Rush." she called.
One week later - Feb 3 6:30pm
Rush had brought his helmet and DJ equipment to the tree he had found on the outskirts of Ponyville. He was practicing for the upcoming competition that was 11 days away. He was also doing a lot of showing off.
Sunset Shimmer was watching him in awe as he danced to an EDM song he created. He spun around then moontrot back to where she was on his hindlegs.
"Whoa how do you do that!?" Sunny asked while tapping her hooves to the beat.
"Balance, skill , some practice. And this" he finished while flexing.
Then he jumped into a bucking position and walked around on his forelegs. Sunset Shimmer found herself staring at him, realizing he was slightly more muscular then the average stallion but still small and light.
'Wow, he looks pretty dreamy.' she said in her head.
"Stop showing off. I hope you know that you're already impressive enough."
"I wish I could get you to feel the same way though." Sunny mumbled to herself. 'I'll just have to turn up the charm a notch and make it impossible for him not to notice."
"Why would I stop showing off?" Rush did a hoofstand pushup and used his forelegs to jump back into a standing position with a grin on his face.
"You gave me a horn and I tooted it. Ha tooted. Besides you must of been enjoying yourself enough for that to happen."
He pointed at her horn. It was spraying sparks again. He smiled at her. When she noticed what was happening she licked her hoof and put it on her horn. Slowly he was beggining to put things together.
"Why does that happen to you anyway." he leaned in slowly while wearing a devious, cocky grin.
"Umm. Well. Magic problems. Happens sometimes."
"You mean every time I make you uncomfortable?" Sunset quietly gasped. Her face turned from one of from dark red embarrassment, to a fearful blue. He was catching on!
"Can I ask you something?" She reluctantly nodded.
"You always act so strange and defensive around me and I'm pretty sure your magic is fine so... I'm getting the idea that you aren't telling me something. Am I right?"
Sunset was trapped. She couldn't lie to him he would know. She couldnt even look at him in the eye for starters so...
"It's just I can't understand you or mares in general. But whatever it is you can tell me"
"I can't tell you Rush."
"Why not?" he questioned.
"You wouldn't understand okay."
"If you really don't want to tell me then I guess I can't force you but it's clearly important so..."
Rush knew that the only time a unicorn's horn sparked like that was when they had a serious sickness, or when they were pulling off a very difficult spell. Sometimes though when they were romantically into somepony. Wait what? The latter seemed like the only logical choice but she didn't feel that way about him did she? Either way this secret she was hiding was starting to bother him. Rush decided to drop the matter for the moment. Sunset Shimmer began pouting and stormed off, struck by her hormones and confusion. Rush wanted to say something to stop her but he knew that it wouldn't help either of them. He decided to trot off in the opposite direction. He began thinking and moving again.
"Uggh. Why won't she tell me what's wrong!" ...
