From Pony to Dragon: Spike's Life
A life worth knowing

A Life Worth Knowing
With lunch already over, Celestia had asked Talonus to give Spike a few days to say his ‘farewells’ to his friends. That meant a day here in Canterlot and the next in Ponyville, where it was home most of his life.
But for now, he was to get a few lessons from his father. Celestia meanwhile took Sunset to her former quarters. The mare practically pranced when she heard Celestia had practically kept her room the way it was the day she left.
Spike meanwhile had left with his father outside. The guards left them all alone, except the few to keep citizens away or aware of their presence. The day had turned to afternoon with Spike’s friends still out enjoying Canterlot, which left him alone with his father.
The concept was both odd and foreign to him. Celestia had raised him since birth while Twilight taught him everything to know. He never really had a father on his own; Twilight’s father was more or less like an uncle. Shinning treated him like a best friend or as close to a brother as possible. What made this particular principle odd was that he hadn’t really considered what it might mean to him if he were to know of his father.
Ever since he knew that he was a dragon and that they were ponies, they were on two different worlds. Celestia told him that one day, he would want to find out who he was. How he accomplishes this would be up to him.
Now his father stood before him, standing 15 times larger than him and was almost intimidating. But, the gentle smile and the amazing stature his father carried, it was almost like staring into the eyes of a titan or deity.
His father and him where back at the gardens with the clearing made for his size. His father managed to lay on all fours and tuck his wings in. Even then, his stature remained huge but his body spoke peace.
Spike sat in front of him on a stone garden bench. He once again met his father’s eyes.
“Try not to gaze to deeply son.” Talonus spoke out first. His voice was once again gentle as a summer breeze. “Draco’s Eye really is for when you’re trying to get inside of somedrakes head.”
“Draco’s eye?” questioned Spike.
“Hmmm. When your eyes first caught mine, you saw into my past did you not? You saw bits of my life, not all of it but some of it to know little of me.”
Spike realized that he had gazed into his father and did see a few pieces of his father’s past.
“M-m-My birth… the deal you made with Celestia… you fighting another dragon… becoming a council member and… earning your name… SkyLord?”
Talonus nodded. “Aye, that name only given to those who do a selfless duty for the peace of not just dragons, but others as well. I fought off 20 dragons myself in aerial combat… not an ease feet even on ground. Though, I am surprised you didn’t see your mother or sister yet.”
Spike gave a shake of his head. Talonus sighed. “Well… we will wait for that moment to come, but for now, I believe you have many questions and since its just you and I, you may fire when ready.”
It took a while for Spike to gather his thoughts. He tried to organize them like he would with Twilight’s library. He already had a few answered right away but it was best to get them straight and clear from the source.
“Who am I?” Okay that question came out rather ridicules but still, what if he had a different purpose?
“Who are you?” Talonus repeated the question. He gave a thought, with a ‘hmmm’ involved. With a click of his tongue he spoke clearly.
“Well, in order to answer that, I will give you a bit of history first. Though, you already are aware of ponies and dragons at the brink of war, I will skip to near the time of your birth.
At this point, Equestria had tried began to round its forces and the angry dragons that wanted revenge were assembling during the migration. The council and I were literally screaming at each other on what to do. I still had hopes for ponies, thinking that we could co-exist. Then, one of the other council members suggested we would make a trade of sorts. That if they truly believed in my ideas that ponies and we can live peacefully, that I would trade something of value with them.”
“Me.” Was Spike’s simple response. Talonus heard neither malice nor distain in Spike’s voice but he did carry uncertainty and sadness.
“Yes. When they heard that my mate, your mother, had just laid your egg, they all decided that if they traded your egg with a pony, that I was really sure of our kind and pony kind to work with one another, than there would be no trouble anymore. The ponies would stop hunting us and we would not war with ponies.
I couldn’t argue with the council but neither could I deny that if this were to work, than there could be peace. The trade with Celestia was successful; I gave your egg to be hatched by her and a pony from her own to be traded. However, I knew that the council might think back on the trade and we could have ended up with a useless pony or a criminal and we could have dispose of them anytime.
Celestia knew that as well, so she brought Sunset Shimmer to my attention. At first, I thought this would go south very quickly. Her being a filly and me being a dragon, she would freak out or think Celestia was punishing her. However, I offered to teach her to control her pyro-kinetic magic and explosive magic.”
“Dragons… can learn magic?”
“Do you send scroll through fire to Celestia and receive?”
Spike nodded.
“We’ll touch more about that in a moment. Continuing, once the trade was accepted, Celestia would grant you safety when you attached and was guaranteed till adulthood where you would return home. The same would be with Sunset Shimmer. But… Celestia had other plans.”
“Its not her fault.” Quickly countered Spike. “She may not have hatched me, but she did raise me. She was… I guess ‘mother’ to me as Sunset was ‘father’ to you. Twilight was more of a sister than anything.”
Talonus looked at his son for a moment before looking towards the city.
“Then they both raised you right. You truly are more of a Dragon than most dragons are.”
Spike snorted. “Right. The last time someone said that was a dragon. They didn’t even think I was a true dragon because I didn’t act like one and hung around with ponies.”
His father raised a brow.
“Oh? And who were these dragons and when did you meet them?”
Spike waved a claw.
“It was a decade ago, when the last dragon migration happened. I tried to go my own way and found myself wanting to find out who I was.”
“A journey of self discovery? At your age?” His father seemed to be annoyed by the thought. “And you did this by yourself?”
Spike could hear the growing anger in his father’s voice. Spike answered truthfully.
“Twilight did tag along… in eyesight, but that’s not the point. I go there, thinking I would know what it means to be a dragon but all that ended up was me seeing that dragons were awful, evil dragons…” He let that hang in the air. “They chased us and we got away.”
His father remained silent for a moment before responding.
“I was there at the migration. I had to make sure that there were no ponies or rouge dragon would stray from the path.” His voice lowered. “I should have been aware of any hatchlings walking away from the nesting area.”
“I was actually were the teen drakes area. I didn’t know there were separate areas.”
“That’s understandable.” Commented Talonus. “But doesn’t excuse the fact that you were chased by the teenagers.” His father paused. “You wouldn’t happen to remember the names or what they look like?”
“Um… Grumble?” He paused. “Red dragon… that’s it. There were a lot of red dragons.”
Talnous nodded.
“To many, though the name sounds familiar.”
Spike shrugged.
“I didn’t care afterwards. They wanted me to squash a Phoenix’s nest but I refused. That’s when Twilight and the others came to help and then we quickly got away. I managed to save one of the baby chicks and kept him as a pet.”
His father gave a smile.
“Truly remarkable. You when against your own kin and saved another, along with adopting a familiar.”
“… Peewee wasn’t my familiar? I didn’t have magic or anything with me…”
“Any creature,” began his father. “that sees a creature in front of them and carry a magical signature will leave an imprint on them. They will see you as their master, as their lord and as their guardian. You may not have known that your… ‘Peewee? … ‘imprinted’ on you but he did, nonetheless and became your familiar because of your magical signature.”
Spike thought about it. At first, Peewee did spend time around him more than anything. When Spike was feeling down or got hurt, he was always there before Twilight. When he returned him back to his family, Peewee seemed to cry when he was put back home. Spike felt his heart almost break, as if losing a family member. Maybe he was his familiar…
“But you said I have a magic signature. Celestia placed a magic spell on me so I can send the letters but I can’t cast magic.”
“Not that you know of but, here is something for you to understand.” He leaned in. “Dragons are immune to magic.”
He left that statement hang in the air and Spike to think in awe about it.
“Celestia casted the spell on you because you allowed it. You, and so few other dragons, actually can cast magic as well as have magic affect them. Any other dragon you met, would not be affected by magic. Magic can work around them, say lift a gem from their claws, but a magical blast couldn’t hurt them…” he paused. “Unless it was really powerful magic… like Celestia’s magic and even then she would have to use powerful magic to harm a dragon.” Another pause. “A full grown dragon that is…”
“And… I am a dragon capable of magic.”
“Not in the way you think son. Magic could easily bounce off of you in the next couple of years. Even if you allowed some act of magic to happen to you, the affect would be vastly weak. Once you reach my height or age, you could within roughly stand any magical attack or effect.
Now, your magic is vastly different. The few abilities you have which are ranged to growth size, fire manipulation, strength, elemental controls, magic casting and more. One that we both share 'Draco's Eye', which allows us to few into other dragons, view 'Gaze into the eyes of dragons.' The sending of scrolls via fire is one such ability. Even though it was made for you, it is part of your abilities when young. As far as I can tell, you are able to control your greed easily, you have alternate forms…”
“Wait, how did you know of that?”
His father gave him a noted glance.
“I looked into your eyes to son. I have see parts of your past, notably, the growths. You had one form when Twilight had a magical outburst, you had one when you let your greed control you… for the time bit and your natural growth.”
“Are there others?”
“Other forms you will take?”
Spike nodded.
“Its unheard of that you took three different forms. You should have only your natural growth and your greed growth, which runs through all dragons though few can change their sizes at will. The magical form maybe part of your magic heritage but we both are limited to that knowledge.
However, the rest of your magic is solely based on you. Since Celestia used your fire for use, you may have some fire manipulation as well. You haven’t tested your abilities as of yet?”
Spike thought. What did he really do that was something that he considered an ability.
“I guess I didn’t really notice it till now but, I have survived a lot of… would be painful accidents. I had huge books fall on me, I smashed into walls at break necks speeds that would normally kill a pony… does belly-flopping into a lava pit count?”
His father cringed at the thought, making Spike wonder if that was some miracle he didn’t get hurt. He rubbed his belly a bit, almost imagining the pain.
“That bad?”
“Well, seeing that you survived lava and… belly-flopped into it… I suppose you have a somewhat high degree of physical resistance, especially at a young age where scales are barely beginning to completely form and harden.”
“I thought it was because all the gems I ate.”
“You would think so but no. We all think that as younglings but the gems are more of a treat to us like sweets to ponies.” He thought on for a moment. “Anything else?”
“Well as you already know, I did manage to blow a huge fire a huge glacier cloud at the Equestrian Games.”
His father nodded.
“That is a feat on itself. One that even pure fire dragon hatchlings would have trouble with at the age.”
Spike nodded. “I guess that’s it.”
“You forgot one, my son.”
“What?”
“You ability to go so long without eating meat and not having lasting affects till the last few months. Your growth spurt should have only kicked in when you had your first kill or tasted of meat. After your bodies had ingested the protein and iron in the meat, it would have sped up your growth spurt.”
“And not because my friends kept me from eating other ponies?”
“They were… your heralds to hold you in place. They may have not known your need for me but they did keep your appetite from going out of control or feral. Your friends were your greatest anchor to staying yourself.”
Spike bathe in the praise of his father’s words. Yes, they truly were his anchor and many times he really did feel like he would have been lost if not for them.
“Your abilities are limited for now, but later on they will grow.”
“What about wings?”
“Your wings are different part of the story though they still revolve around your first growth spurt. Your wings, that I will say may or may not be the most painful experience of growing up.” Spike winced and his hope seem to dwindle at the thought of it. His father nodded. “They do come from your back bone and from there, erupt from your shoulder blades. And when I say erupt, I don’t mean explode or blow from your back.
Dragons usually get them early either through greed, finding a life-mate or their diets of meat. In your case, like I said, may or may not be painful. Since your growth was somewhat altered and you are also a magic drake, they may appear magically or sprout from your back. However, if they appear from your back, they will be strong wings that may make you faster with stronger beats. If they are magical, they be could for quick maneuvering and hovering. It all really depends between the current moment till the event which causes your wings to grow, we won’t know.”
Spike really was now scarred of getting his wings. The most painful experience he has ever had? What are the chances that it won’t be painful? That begged the question.
“How did your wings come out?”
His father gave a warm smile.
“That is a good question. My wings came when I tried to take on a huge kill without help on my first solo hunt. I wasn't ready for the danger and I wasn't prepared to fight for my live, that I would be going after small hydra. I was literally at the edge of my line, but when I realized that I had to do this or risk not becoming the drake I wanted to be. Next thing I knew, my wings burst from my back and I charged the hyrdra. I latched onto its middle neck, it being the only one that can stop the hydra heads from growing two more, snapped is off and quickly shredded the others. I then quickly set it aflame to prevent any possible regrowth of their heads. I roared to the sky in victory and took my first bite into my feast."
His father gave a proud grin. "I truly was a drake that day and maybe someday, you will earn your wings in some heroic fashion as well."
"But you were young when you did that. I am already 20 years and still don't have my wings."
"True but I was already trained by my father to hunt and while I am glad you were raised by ponies, you would still need to overcome your fear of bloodshed before that may happen. Now, let met ask you this. How old do you believe me to be?”
Spike was stumped. It was not a question he ever thought of asking before and for anypony, it was really hard to tell the age of a dragon. Little is known to tell, but they were known to have lifespans of thousands of years. From earlier, he could tell that he knew Celestia for a long while, but that could be anywhere between the moment of their trade to a millennium. Many thought that the bigger the dragon, the older they are and his father is roughly 30 to 40 hooves tall. He past any previous dragons Spike has encountered including the few that resided near Ponyville a decade back.
Looking more confused than ever, he answered.
“I honestly don’t know. I haven’t really bothered to check how old is a dragon or what they look like when they are old.”
Talonus gave a smile.
“That is a good observation son. For you, you are still considered a hatchling because you hit your first growth spurt. Yet you are a size past Celestia and can take on a number of ponies if need be. Dragon sizes and age are vastly different from each other. You could have stayed in your greed form but still be a hatchling because you lacked either intellect or maturity to control some of your greed. Now, as for my age, I am near 750 years.”
Spike’s jaw dropped and his father gave a hearty chuckle.
“Yes, I am aware that is extremely old or hard to believe but at this age, well, I am in my prime as to say. Yet, other dragons that are my age can either be three times my size or stay as small as you. Dragon growth, at least normal dragon growth can stop between my height or the size of a castle. Few dragons can change their sizes at will.”
“Can I?” He asked, his voice a bit hopeful.
“That is something even I don’t know of, but, when you return home, we will discover the answers together.”
Spike thought on. “Can you change your size?”
“I can but I only do it when I have to when situations call for it. Changing size requires energy, patience and a clear mind. It also it best to prepare yourself for the changes so your body and your mind adjusts with it.”
“How small can you get?”
“About your size.”
“And you said other’s can as well?”
“Few others.” Spike nodded in understanding. “So, any more questions?”
And so for the rest of the afternoon, Spike and Talonus engaged in what would be the most educational experience of Spike’s life. Yeah, Twilight and Celestia taught him roughly everything he needed to know. But, his father, which still got some used to saying, had taught him everything he wanted to know.
The dragon life cycle. From the moment a dragoness lays an egg, the hatchling is ready to hatch, but how it hatches it depends. From heat, to magic, to love and even other elements, it what shapes the hatchling.
Elemental dragons, fire, water, wind, earth, lightning or a mix between them is how they may hatch. Whether their elements will work with their body or will work against all depends on how well the egg works with them or not. Hatchlings can lay dormant an in egg for a thousand years if it has to, though it will take longer for the hatchling to grow up. The gender is not known till the hatchling breaks from its egg. However, differences in body temperature help change the fact when inside the dragoness’s womb.
When the dragon hatches, the first thing is that they are somewhat blind. They are sensitive to light, even fire or lightning hatchlings. When they hatch, they must immediately hide from any bright places, which is why a mother or its guardian must cover them. The first food as well, is what its going to eat for the rest of its life.
Roughly around the time it hatches till 20 years does the hatchling continue to absorb and take in any information. They could learn practically anything and retain that information for years to come. Spike, being around one of the smartest minds around had helped him early on in life, even at newly hatched, he still had memories of then.
What is the barrier between hatchling to child to teen and then adult, is close to pony kin to some degree. From hatchling to child, it would be roughly between birth to 40 years. Roughly between 20 to 40 years, a dragon can mate and carry clutches of hatchlings. Though it is verily when can explore their urges and mate without having hatchlings to care for.
From child to teen between 40 to 100 years and from that to adult is around 100 or more. Dragons can continue to grow and may reach their “prime’ until 200 years or more. Their prime lasts for as long as the dragon is strong and healthy with no physical wears. His father had been in his prime for 650 years! He won’t reach elderly till his 1500’s or more!
“Few dragons have lived longer than 2000 years and even fewer can still remember what the world was like back than. At that point a dragon may choose to sleep and never wake up or they can live past and continue on.”
“Any currently you know of?”
His father nodded.
“Your great grandmother, my mother’s mother, is the oldest known dragon around. She is older than most pony history began recording. Passing a bit after 2700 years, she is one of the oldest ones still living.”
Spike hurt his jaw the rest of the day for it kept dropping and was really hard to keep holding in his surprises.
“How…”
“How she has lived that long?” Spike managed to nod. His father gave a chuckle. “Well, she is a stubborn old… really old… really really old dragoness. She hates knowing that she can’t walk straight or stand long anymore because of her size but still has no problem screaming at the rest of her children or the council. Believe it or not, she was one of the original dragons to start the council separate from the feral dragons. She still likes to give advice to any dragon that she deems worthy or if history is asked. She still is actually the holder of the draconic archives and teaches the younglings history of our kind. But she still is stubborn when it comes to being old.”
“Has she always been stubborn?”
His father gave a hearty laugh.
“Yes, she was. She believes that dragons were always the smartest species before ponies began to really develop hoof writing. She would always use to say that, without dragons, ponies wouldn’t have been as smart as they are now. She created written language; she had created energy preserves in gems, so on and so forth.”
“Huh…”commented Spike. “I could have sworn that Celestia once said that her mother, Faust, had created words and gave ponies intelligence when she created the world.”
His father snorted.
“Celestia believes anything her goddess of a mother would say, but truth is, Faust only came once to them and told them to help pony kind. After that, she left to take a vacation or something. My mother told me that Faust was just trying to give her ponies an edge and make them all worship or flank when she came. In all honesty, dragons were around longer than pony kind can even remember. Even when they were ferals and graze eating horses, we dragon had already a history with the world.” He paused. “That is to say that they are not all bad.” He paused again. “Not even Celestia.”
Turns out, he really did have a history with Celestia. And not the kind that he would have figured.
“When I was one of the new council members and managed to get everything in line, I was charged to meet with the princess the first time to get to know of our ally. At the time, she didn’t really trust dragons much and I gave no exception, but after a few days living around her and knowing her personally, I changed her mind and she became an ally to the dragons.”
Spike suddenly grew a bit weary and somewhat curious.
“When you mean personally, do you mean, like… spend lunch together with her or something?”
His father gave a large laugh that shook the grounds and scattered the wild life. When he calmed down, he looked his son in the eyes with good joy.
“Son, when I meant personally, I meant that she and I did lunch together and spent the night together in her bed. We mated with each other like teens in heat!” Spike’s jaw was really hurting now. “I had to take her to an exclusive area just so she wouldn’t scream in all of Canterlot and cause panic.”
Spike instantly got a mental picture in his head with his father pounding away at Celestia. Oddly enough, it didn’t disturb him but it did rattle him a bit.
“W-what did mother say or were you with her at the time?”
His father gave a broader grin.
“I brought your mother along the trip son. She was at a cave nearby when I brought Celestia to us.”
“So she…”
“Your mother watched, played with herself and joined in on us. Yeah, she got screwed by two dragons.”
Author's Note
No edit, just had to shove this one in as soon as I could.
Also, this one will be a bit raunchy towards the end.
Next chapter will guarantee sex... yes I said it and maybe extended.
Lastly, again this is based on my own concepts of dragons. I am not following, well not following some of the rules in the show or any other place, so ideas are 100% mine.
Love it, hate it, don't care just tell me 'what the fuck dude!'
