Chapter 1 A Demon on the Moon?

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Luna’s door flashes with a great bright white light. The sudden flash sends a shockwave along the lunar surface. Causing great mounds of moon dust and rocks to fly up into space. The explosion that the door caused looks like a slow motion action movie. With the shockwaves ring slowly flying up into the air. Luna looks behind her before exiting. There is nothing but a small pink dot jumping about in the background barely visible. Luna smiles, and her horn flashes to life casting a film around her body that shimmers and gleams blue and purple. Her horn dies out but the new hue stays. She steps out onto the grey rocky dust. It makes a crunching noise as she steps like snow. Luna laughs to herself and starts to prance about happily. Letting the moons gravity take her high and drop her back down. Luna stumbles, as the moons gravity is hard to navigate. The stars above glow beautifully and the earth close by looks massive. You can see the pink clouds the blue of the ocean the white clouds and the green and rainbow hues of the equestra below. However further away from equestria the world becomes that of a desolate war zone. Half the world is beautiful where the other half is devastated.

The moon is the least bit fascinating. From where Luna is there is nothing but a sea of lunar dust. The north has some hills and large mountains in the distance. To the south there is nothing but flat land and one giant crater. To the east there is multiple craters and meteors. And finally to the west there is some pony hoof tracks leading far to the west. The path seems to go on forever going over some hills and around some meteors and craters found along the way. Luna smiles and heads in that direction. She hops and races happily to her destination.

After a few hours of walking, prancing, and singing, Luna finally makes it up a mountain with ease, and then stops looking over at the horizon. A beautiful star nursery acts like a sun giving light to this side of the moon. It glimmers and glows purple and white. The stars inside twirl as the cloud of dust creates them. Luna takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. She looks down at the flattened area below and scans the area almost as if plotting for an attack. The area is surrounded by mountains and looks like a place for a prisoner, the canyon below is deep and there looks to be no exit from the bowl. Then the bowl shimmers with a purple hue showing that there is magical barrier acting like a ceiling.

She backs up and turns to her right. In Front of her is a tunnel she had made a long time ago. This tunnel leads down into the bowl. She walks up to the entrance and leans her head down. Her horn touches the barrier and the barrier responds by shimmering her colors and shutting down. The barrier melts from the center of the circle down to the sides. Until it is all gone. Luna starts down the tunnel looking all around her. Finally she reaches the end of the tunnel. She sticks her neck out and looks both ways. Then she steps completely out and hides behind a nearby rock quickly. She scoots down and crunches herself into a ball and tries not to laugh. From inside the canyon you can really see how tall the mountains are. Stretching far up into space. Along the walls are magic crystals and in the center of the canyon is a giant pink crystal floating between two metal rings. It is tall and tubular with points on either side. It is polished and cut beautifully. Luna peers down the canyon. Her target spotted. A small green tent far down the canyon sitting all-alone away from everything else. There are a few rocks along the way large enough to hide behind. But only for a short distance. About fifty yards from the tent. And after that it is a perfect clearing for about 10 more yards to the tent.

Luna carefully watches the tent for movement as she moves like a cat quietly darting from one rock to the next. Making sure she doesn't fall or make any sound.  Finally she reaches the last 10 feet. She moves into the tents blind spot and slinks low to the ground. She gets to the tents door and uses her magic to quietly part the tents flaps. She takes a quiet step into the tent. The green nylon fabric feels slick and scratchy on her hooves. But she continues to try and make little sound. The tent itself is as big as a small 4-roomed apartment. She is walking in the small living room decorated with two beanbag chairs a single TV. Hooked to the TV is a X-Hoof and a NeighStation. Controllers randomly dispersed in the room along with chips and other much needed gaming snacks. She looks at the TV as she walks past it. She comes to an opening just a few feet from the door to the right. She turns into the kitchen. The kitchen has a single stove powered by the magic generator under one of the sink cabinets. The generator is small and requires to be fed Alicorn magic once every two months. There is also a small fridge and two more cabinets just above the stove. She is Always looking behind her self every few seconds. She then sneaks into the last room of the small tent. It is out of the kitchen and right down the hall or straight across from the entrance. She enters the bedroom. The floor is littered with socks of blues and whites some with stripes, along with dirty sheets and blankets. Luna smiles for a second before perking her head up. Something moves behind her. She turns quickly to see nothing. She lowers herself back down.

She walks back to the entrance and looks left to right. And then goes back down into the living room. She hears something going on in the kitchen. Two plates rattling together and a small fridge opening. She looks around the corner to find a white male Pegasus with a fiery red and orange Mohawk styled mane is standing on two hooves making a sandwich. Both side of his flank have burn marks his cutie mark is illegible. On both sides of his wings he has a strange enchanted rune. It is a circle and inside that circle is another circle that looks like a moon. The rune shimmers. Luna shifts down lower and walks closer real slow. She gets up on top of him and rises up slowly before she can grab him he turns and tackles her. Sending them falling hard to the ground. He stands over top of her his hooves pinning her down by her chest.

“Morning Princess.” Firebrand’s voice is the same voice heard in Luna’s dreams earlier last night. “Good err you're standing on my chest.” Luna grunts her face turning bright red. The Pegasus smiles and leans in to her. “You like it.” Luna smiles and blows the hair out of her now red face. “Can we not do that today? It would make the fifth time this week Flare” Flare lowers into her head and parts his hooves off her chest and rubs her head against his. “As you wish Princess.” Flare backs off of her and helps her up.

“Well it has been a stressful week for me I kind of just want you to stay here with me really Luna.” Luna smiles and rubs against Flare. “Don’t worry about...” Luna sits and thinks trying to convert her voice to a lower decibel and use more modern words. Flare rubs against her “Don't worry about me the elements have it under control?” He rubs his face against hers and flicks his tail in her face as he goes back to making his sandwich. Luna stands up and shakes her feathers and fur down. “So what are we going to do today then?” Flare reaches for some mustard on the counter in front of him next to the fridge. Luna looks around the small cramped kitchen she is standing just inside the doorway. “I have no idea Flare I mean we have explored nearly every inch of the moon.”

Luna looks over at the game room at a box labeled artifacts. And then back at Flare who is now holding a plate out to Luna. “That’s your sandwich not mine.” Luna says as she turns around to sit in the living room slash game room. Flare follows her and lays the plate down in front of her. “Eat I worry about you sometimes you do two things. You command the moon and you visit me. When do you eat?” Luna laughs. “I eat you have seen me eat.” Flare rubs his neck with his right hoof. “I just worry about you is all.” Luna picks the sandwich up. It’s a normal sandwich poor flare can't get much supplies. If it weren’t for Luna he would surely go hungry. In fact Princess Celestia never sends him rations of anything. Luna has been taking care of his every need since Discords transformation.

Luna inspects the sandwich closer and splits it in two. It’s a normal sandwich lettuce tomato just Flare adds an extra ingredient most ponies find distasteful and that’s meat. Luna picks off the turkey and mystery meat and gives it to flare. “There you go Flare eat up.” Flare waits for Luna to turn her head he gets up and acts like he is stretching when he really hides the meat under his beanbag chair.

“That was good ugh whatever that was.” Luna laughs you worry about me eating and I never see you eat ever.” Flare takes a deep breath and lets it out and then he remembers something. “Luna you know how each time I go to mention something this week we ended up putting it off to do other things.” Luna takes another bite of the tomatoes and lettuce and nods. “I found something last week in sector NM It’s a hidden cave system. I didn’t dare go in alone so I waited for you. “

Luna drops the plate She chews the rest of her food quickly and swallows letting out a sigh after she manages it down. “Sector NM! I haven’t been in there in forever!” Flare smiles and faces Luna. “I know that’s why I have been wanting to take you. It looks like a really cool cave.” Flare jumps up in excitement he keeps to the ground thanks to the magical cell in the kitchen. It does more than just power everything. It produces air and keeps things down on the ground. Flare runs to his room and throws some socks out of the way.

“Oh by the way these need to go back to your place and I need clean blankets.” Luna stands up out of the chair. “What do I look like your wife?” Flare stops for a second. “No that would be silly Celestia would skin me alive.” Luna laughs but it sounds fake. “Yeah she would.” Flare comes out wearing eight rings four around each hoof and then four around each leg. These rings have red ruby centers that glow with bright blue magic. The rings are pure gold and very heavy. The ones above those are the same only they have an onyx gem in the center of the rings. Luna walks over to him.

“I love when you wear those. Are they charged?” Flare nods. “Just got them off their charger I am good for seventy two hours I believe.” “Good because last time we went out you lost charge in all eight nearly suffocated and flew into the sun your lucky I have magic.” Flare laughs and rolls his eyes. “I totally could have saved myself Luna.” Luna mocks him and turns hitting his face with her tail. “Your just full of fire today aren’t you?” Luna replies back quickly. “When am I not?” She steps out of the tent into the lunar wasteland. Flare takes a step out his bracelets flash and he locks to the ground allowing him to walk as if he was on earth. They walk straight back up out of the bowl and then keep going straight. The path to sector NM is rough and rocky. The rocks scrape against their hooves cutting them making them bleed. Finally after a few miles of jagged rocks the path finally leveled out into a flat ancient lunar lakebed. Craters litter this once great lake. Flare motions Luna to follow him as he starts to run towards one of the larger mountains straight on from where they are standing. They pass multiple rocks and hills some shaped like Nightmare Moon’s head.

Flare stops once he gets to the large mountain cave. He pants heavily from the running. Luna walks up to the entrance. She stares at it inspecting it. She walks in slowly Flare follows close behind. Luna brightens the path and then after a few feet into the cave she stops in front of a wooden door. Luna puts her hoof on the door and rubs it. It’s a simple oak wood door. It has black cast iron hinges and a cast iron knob. Luna turns the knob and the door opens without a sound. She takes a step in and the entire room looks like that of the two sisters castle.

“Flare you found my home away from home!” Flare smiles and brushes past Luna. “Guess I got some major points for this huh?” Luna bumps him. “If your points were legal tender. You could buy me.” Luna blushes. Flare looks around. “I haven’t been in this castle in a...” Flare catches himself and becomes silent. Luna walks over to him with a concerned look. “Are you okay Flare?” He nods and walks around. The room is large and very empty. The only object in the room is the two thrones straight across from the entrance. It is not an exact replica but is close and made of lunar dust.

Flare touches both the thrones. Luna walks up to him and sees he is upset. “You get like this and then you get quiet and you never tell me what’s bothering you.” Flare looks down at the ground. “I can’t tell you Luna” Flare’s eyes flash from beautiful orange red to dark grey and lifeless. “But Flare I can help you I am not here to hurt you. You know that I know that.” Flare backs away from Luna’s touch. “I don’t want you to hate me like every pony else does.” Luna laughs and raises his head to look into his eyes. Flare’s eyes flash back to their original color. “You can tell me anything.” Flare looks down at his bracelets “I am bound never to tell you anything of my life. Galaxia told me to keep my mouth shut.” Luna steps back. “Mother told you not to talk to me about your life?” Luna looks at him puzzled. “And my goddess also told me not to tell you.” Luna looks at him “Should we even be together then?” Flare looks down at his hooves. “I don’t know.” Luna bumps him. “Let’s explore a bit more and look around. I remember there is something in the Library.”

Luna and Flare walk back to the entrance and talk a hall to the left. They go up some stairs into a fairly small library. Luna looks around at thousands of pieces of paper. “By the Frost what are all these?” Luna looks around frantically. “My memories all my thoughts all my ideas.” Flare’s eyes flash again to a dull lifeless color. “I hope that we don’t have any of our information here.” Luna continues to look. “Not that I can remember. No wait nope because I lost this place three years before I met you. Does it matter?” Flare looks around and starts to read some of the old notes Nightmare left behind. “Anything about Chrysalis? Or Sombra?”

Luna turns to look at Flare whose eyes flash back to normal. Flare stumbles about. “Are you doing okay your acting stranger than Usual?” A voice echoes in Flares head. It is deep and dark. “It is time we leave this place what do you say? Oh who cares what you have to say.” Flares bracelets explode his eyes widen. Luna drops her notes and grabs him up. She goes to cast a spell to incase him in the same liquid barrier she is encased in. Her horn flashes to life and then dies. Flare beings to gasp for air. Luna presses her lips to his and blows in some oxygen. “Hold on!” Luna starts down the stairs and down the hall. A bright light flashes down the exit and causes a shock wave. Causing the cave to roar and start to crumble. Flare and Luna fly back Luna hits her head on the ground and lands on top of flare. Luna’s ears ring from the sound of the blast. She starts to pass out when a long tall figure flashes in front of her. Luna wakes up in the tent. Discord is laughing to himself. “And then what happened Flare?” Flare looks at Luna. “She is up!" Luna rises up out of Flare’s bed.

“What happened?” Discord flashes behind Luna. “Well when Flare’s bracelet things blew up like they are designed to do if an imprisoned Unicorn attempts to use magic to break free. The dust it admits is non-lethal to a Unicorn. However is extremely dangerous for an Alicorn.” Luna looks at flare his legs burnt from the explosion. “That is the second time I almost lost you within just a few weeks.” Luna looks at him. “That’s the second time I almost lost you to those stupid bracelets.” Flare looks at Discord. “I talked with Discord for a few hours. He came to tell you that your sister is beyond words. Anyhow we both sat down and talked.” Discord buts in. “I forgot how much of a riot Flare was! I made a suggestion that you Luna could go into his memories and instead of him telling you.” Discord makes air quotes. “He could show you and wouldn’t risk you know breaking a god’s word.”

Luna smiles “Why the sudden change Flare?” Behind Flares eyes a voice echoes word for word what it wants flare to say. “I think I was being silly before. If we are to be more than just mates then we need to tell each other all of our secrets.” Meanwhile flare inside his mind is trying to gain back control. The darkness laughs and plays him like a puppet. It then sighs and lets him go but it is too late. Flare already agreed to let her see his life, which is worse than him telling her his life. “Luna! I...” “What is it Flare?” Discord opens another door outside the tent. “Dearest Luna I will be waiting for you here after you and Flare get done in there!” Discord shouts back at her. “I can’t wait for you to see my life.”

Flare smiles and hugs Luna. Flare lets out a sigh of relief, which only angers the darkness within him. He hugs her tighter. “I love you.” Luna wraps her neck around his. “I love you too.” “Promise no matter what you see hear or feel you will never leave me.” Luna pushes off of him and looks him the eyes. “I Luna Selene promise to flare of the Silver Shields to never leave. May this gift be a sign of my promise?” Luna slips off one of her shoes with her magic and places it in Flare’s right hoof. She then touches it taking air from both their mouths and concealing it inside the shoe as an enchant. “And may this kiss signify unity and trust. Binding us forever be it as friends or as a family.” Luna leans in and kisses Flare on the lips Flares eyes mix colors with Luna’s turning his eyes an orange green and hers the same. Discord shouts from outside. “Come on you two Celestia wants to talk to Luna and It has already been a few hours!” Flare looks at Luna in the yes. “That color suits you.” She turns and starts to walk out the door.

“So what you give me your shoe kiss me do this weird magic soul binding thing and just walk out without sealing the deal?” Luna laughs and shouts back at him as she walks out the door. “That’s what the kiss was for!” Flare screams back as Discord opens the dimensional gate. “You owe me later!” Luna shakes her head and shouts at him. “I will see you in your dreams!”  Discord at this point is just leaning against the open door and mocking them talking to each other. Flare laughs and waves and walks inside plopping down onto a beanbag chair. He takes the shoe into his hoof. It’s a small black shoe nothing special. Or at least there was a time when it wasn’t, But now its equivalent to a wedding ring.
