Chapter 8: ...Eating my Wings to Make Me Tame! (Part 2)

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

As the first wave of Millennium vampires marched closer to Hellsing, Sunset took aim with her crossbow. The army ahead of her slowly closed in, marching of 20 rows of 50. It was time to attack. Using her magic, she fired off a volley of arrows. The first row of vampires went down. The guns started firing, and bullets whizzed past Sunset. She put up a strong magic shield in front of her and loaded another arrow. She fired another arrow volley, killing the next row of vampires. Bullets were hitting Sunset’s magic shield, but were deflected in another direction. Some of the bullets flew back at the vampires, killing them. She kept firing volleys of arrows until the vampires started to close in around her. She covered herself with a magic barrier and put away her crossbow, extending her hidden blade and holding up her sword. As the vampires started to surround Sunset, she slashed and stabbed away. Blood spewed everywhere, onto Sunset, onto corpses, and onto the ground. Any bullets fired at Sunset would deflect back at the shooter, killing them. The vampires on the outer formation kept advancing.

“Seras!” Sunset cried. “Get ready! I’m falling back!” Sunset teleported to Seras, magically bringing her fired crossbow arrows to her.

“How many did you get?” Seras asked over the gunfire.

“About half!” Sunset cried, firing off another volley.

“Not bad,” Seras marveled. She fired off a shot, taking a good chunk of the vampires with the explosive round. Within a few more minutes, the first wave of vampires was dealt with. Sunset and Seras took some deep breaths.

“This could take a while,” Sunset groaned, magic wearing off for the moment. “Take my position. I’m going to go check on Braveheart.”

“You got it,” Seras nodded. Sunset walked past Blazing, who was twirling her guns. She dropped it on occasion, but the safety was on, so it didn’t fire. Alushy was getting bored.

“How many waves?” she asked.

“That was only the first,” Sunset informed. “Go ahead and take Seras’s position for her. She’s covering for me.” Alushy nodded and advanced to her new assigned area.

Sunset walked inside the house. She looked over to Braveheart, who hadn’t moved.

“Hey,” Sunset quietly said. “How you doing?” Braveheart didn’t answer. Sunset sighed and sat down next to him. Gunfire erupted from outside. Braveheart gave a sigh.

“I still can’t believe it,” he said, voice barely a whisper. “She wants to kill me. She actually wants to kill me.”

“Braveheart,” Sunset said. “Listen to me. We need you out there. I had to fall back with the first wave. The first one. We still have to hold out with nine more. We can’t do that alone. We desperately need you.”

“I can’t,” Braveheart muttered. “I just can’t do it. I can’t kill her. She’s the closest thing I’ve ever had to a mother. I can’t kill her.” Sunset gave a sad sigh.

“All right,” she nodded. “We won’t kill her then, but the vampire army must die.”

“So be it,” Braveheart groaned. Sunset stood up and walked back out, leaving Braveheart alone again. Memories started to circle through Braveheart’s head again. Memories of him and Dash when he was still young.

~~~Flashback~~~
Braveheart woke up in a bed, rather than on the couch, where he had fallen asleep. The daylight shone in through the window, but Braveheart shunned it away. He rolled over and closed his eyes tight. He gave a groan and opened his eyes. His lids felt heavy, seemingly taking all his strength to keep his eyes open. Giving up, Braveheart let his eyes close again. He felt a hand on his shoulder.
“You awake?” Dash asked.
“Not really,” Braveheart groggily mumbled.
“Well, when you are, I’ve got breakfast ready downstairs,” Dash said.
“OK,” Braveheart nodded. Dash took her hand away and left the room, leaving the door open. Braveheart opened his eyes and tried to sit up. All of his muscles refused, but he managed to do so anyway. He let himself recover before standing up and walking out of the room. He slowly walked down the stairs, trying to stay upright. After taking one wrong step, Braveheart fell head over heels down the stairs. He face planted onto the cloud floor at the bottom, causing Dash to wince at the sound. She ran over and helped him up.
“You OK?” she asked, a bit panicked.
“If I wasn’t before, I’m sure awake now,” Braveheart groaned. “That hurt.”
“Sure looked and sounded like it did,” Dash said. “Is anything broken?” She patted Braveheart down.
“I don’t think so,” Braveheart said. “Just bruises I think.”
“Well, come sit down,” Dash offered. “I made some toast. You want anything on it?” Braveheart shook his head. Dash gave him a piece and he slowly ate.
“Could you tell me a bit about yourself?” Dash asked.
“What about me?” Braveheart mumbled. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Right,” Dash denied. She sat down close to Braveheart. “Come on. I’m listening.” Braveheart sighed.
“All right,” he agreed. “But I don’t remember much. It was only a few days after my third birthday. My parents ignored me, like they always did. I never knew why, but they practically abused me. They would beat me, give me very little to eat, and flat out call me worthless. I had just gone to bed, in the basement. My only friend was my own conscience. I could only talk to myself. I fell asleep, and woke up cold. I wasn’t in the basement. I was in an alleyway. I was hungry, confused, and scared. I tried to look for my way back home, but, I’d never been outside. I never knew where I was. I eventually gave up. I wandered around for months, staying hidden, eating garbage…alone…” Braveheart started to cry. Dash had heard enough. She took Braveheart in her arms and held him close. She didn’t think his life was that horrible. Princess Luna had only said she found him wandering the streets. Nothing else. Braveheart cried onto her shoulder. Dash tried to calm him down.
“Hey, it’s all right,” she shushed. “It’s OK. Don’t worry. I promised I’d take care of you, and I will.” Braveheart had calmed down a bit, but his eyes were still watering. Dash had started to tear up a bit as well. The two of them just sat there, embracing each other.
~~~Present Day~~~

Braveheart listened to the cracks of the guns outside. The heavy pounding of the vampires marching shook his soul. He knew that Rainbow Dash was out there, joined in with the fight. He felt sick. He knew if he moved so much as an inch, he’d throw up. So he didn’t. He stayed still. He couldn’t stop thinking about Rainbow Dash. His adoptive mother was actually trying to kill him. He couldn’t shake that thought from his head. He closed his eyes and started to cry, something he didn’t do often. He just let himself break down, fueled by his broken heart.

~~~
Outside, almost all of the vampires had been dealt with. The fighters were nearly finished with the ninth wave. They had been pushed back all the way to the house.
“Keep fighting!” Sunset cried. “We have to hold out!”
“But Mom!” Blazing cried. “I’m out of bullets.”
“Same here,” Alushy said.
“I’m also out of rounds,” Seras said. “We have no choice. We have to get out of here.”
“No,” Sunset refused. “We have to stay. Braveheart’s still in there.”
“If we stay, we’ll all die,” Alushy said. “We have to leave. Now.”
“I won’t leave Braveheart!” Sunset cried.
“Mom, listen to me,” Blazing reasoned. “I want to refuse to leave Dad behind, but we don’t have a choice. We have to leave Canterlot. This battle is lost!” Alushy grabbed Sunset, and she Seras, and Blazing Fire took off for Sweet Apple Acres.
“NO!” Sunset cried. “BRAVEHEART!” Her voice was lost over the gunfire.
“Hold your fire!” Rainbow Dash cried. “Let them go!” The gunfire from the vampires ceased. “Braveheart’s more important. Keep marching on the building.” The vampires continued on to Braveheart, Rainbow Dash intent on having her revenge.
~~~

Inside, Braveheart had calmed down some. The gunfire had stopped, but he still didn’t move. He was still remembering everything. The times Dash would calm him down when he lost himself, his flight training, the Rainbow Factory…

Braveheart suddenly jolted up with a gasp. The Rainbow Factory. That wretched facility where he witnessed so many innocent Pegasi get murdered before him, where he lost his wings in the first place. At that moment, all feeling of regret and loss left Braveheart, replaced with pure rage. He put his helmet on, stood up, picked up his minigun, and walked to the door. Before he could open it, a loud knock came from the other side.

“I know you’re in there Braveheart,” Rainbow Dash called. “Open up!” The door exploded off the hinges, knocking Rainbow Dash back. Braveheart took heavy steps through the smoke, minigun spun up.

“You didn’t say please,” he hissed. Rainbow Dash bolted upward as Braveheart cut down the rest of the wave down like grass. The vampires were torn up with holes when they finally hit the ground, and Braveheart’s minigun muzzles were smoking. Rainbow Dash dove down, firing her MP40. The bullets struck Braveheart in the chest, but they had little effect because of the juggernaut armor. She threw down her gun and tackled Braveheart, whipping out a .50 cal. Glock and holding it underneath his helmet visor and below the chin. Braveheart at the same time pulled out his revolver and held it to Rainbow Dash’s temple. They both laid there, waiting for the other to make a move.

“How’s it feel to be on the other end of the gun, huh Braveheart?” Rainbow Dash asked. “You traitor! I bet you feel just like Twilight did when you murdered her.”

“What?” Braveheart asked, a bit confused.

“Don’t play dumb!” Rainbow Dash shouted, tears coming to her eyes. “You killed her without so much as a second thought! You slaughtered her like an animal!”

“Wait a minute, hold on!” Braveheart cried. He quickly used his magic to restrain Rainbow Dash the same way he did with Twilight. He stood up, removing his helmet and putting away his gun. He took Rainbow’s from her hand and threw it to the side. He let go of Rainbow Dash, but magically cuffed her hands and feet.

“You think I killed Twilight?”

“I know you did!” Rainbow Dash yelled. “You murdered her without a hint of regret!”

“Who told you that?” Braveheart questioned.

“It doesn’t matter!” Rainbow Dash screamed.

“It does matter,” Braveheart said. “I didn’t kill her. Alushy did. And I had second thoughts about doing so, even third ones. I’m not heartless you know.”

“BULLSHIT!” Dash cried, tears streaming down her face. Braveheart could tell that Rainbow Dash believed everything she had heard. He cast a spell on himself that let him read minds, and he walked up to Dash. He put a hand to her head and looked into her memory. He went back to the time when Dash first heard about Twilight’s death. Dash was kneeling down, screaming and banging her fists on the floor. Shifting perspectives, Braveheart saw a tall figure sitting on a throne. He had tried to take over Equestria once before, but failed. Now, here he was, head of the Millennium Organization. Braveheart left Dash’s memory, and was back in reality. He looked down to see Dash’s face wet with tears. She had dropped to her knees, and she was sobbing. Braveheart sighed and kneeled down, releasing Rainbow Dash from her magic cuffs. Dash looked up at Braveheart, choked up with emotion. Braveheart looked back at her with sympathy, and wrapped his arms around her. Dash quickly returned the embrace, crying on Braveheart's shoulder.

“I'm sorry,” Braveheart whispered. “I truly didn't want to kill her.” He felt Dash nod on his shoulder. He patted her on the back. They stayed embraced for a good long while before Rainbow Dash pulled away.

“Mom,” Braveheart said. “Why did you join Millennium?”

“Only for revenge,” Dash responded, still a bit choked up. “But now, I want to destroy it.”

“Good choice,” Braveheart nodded. The two of them stood up, reunited. Braveheart took Rainbow Dash inside and dialed up Alushy. The phone rang a few times, but Alushy didn't pick up.

“Sup bitch,” the voice message said. “I couldn't get to the phone, so try again later. You cheeky dick waffle.” The tone sounded for the recording to start.

“Alushy, where the hell are you?” Braveheart asked. “If you're not with Sunset and Blazing, then so help me. Damn it, pick up the phone. Anyway, I'm alive, and we have one more wave of Millennium to deal with. Get your immortal vampire ass back to Canterlot now. I'm waiting for you back at the estate. Hurry up.” Braveheart hung up, ending the message. He sighed in anger.

“Who's Blazing?” Rainbow Dash asked.

“Blazing Fire is my daughter,” Braveheart said. The phone suddenly rang. Braveheart picked it up.

“Hello?” he asked.

“Ya got till the crack 'a dawn to get yerself over here,” Applejack hissed.

“Applejack, what's this about?” Braveheart asked.

“Doesn't matter,” Applejack said. “Now git ta the Apple Acres. Ya have till dawn, otherwise ya won't be seein' yer family again.”

“What!?” Braveheart cried. “Applejack, this is an outrage! You leave my family alone…Hello?” Applejack had hung up. Braveheart slammed down the phone and bolted out the door. Dash followed him.

“Hey, wait up!” she called. “Where are you going?”

“I have to save my family,” Braveheart said. “You stay at the house. There's a button underneath the counter near the fridge. It'll open up my gun stash. Defend Hellsing for me.” Dash nodded and flew back to the estate, and Braveheart flew to Sweet Apple Acres. The final wave of Millennium vampires began their march on the Hellsing Organization, hell bent on wiping it from existence.
