The Return of Midnight Sparkle

Chapter 12:

         The battle for Twilight Sparkle’s soul.

Before either Applejack or Rainbow Dash could actually reply to Princess Celestia she reached out and grabbed onto both of them. A white blinding flash of light was emanated between the three and Rainbow Dash could be heard yelling something about losing her lunch. In an instant the three stood next to the statue of Canterlot High school looking on as Midnight was seen charging towards Rarity, Pinkie pie, Princess Twilight and Fluttershy. Watching all of this floating above the battle field was the spirit of Sunset Shimmer. Looking on wards as if the ensuing battle was happening in slow motion. Sunset looked up seeing that her mentor and her two other friends had now joined the battle. She knew it was time to talk with her once trusted teacher. Disappearing and then reappearing right in front of Rainbow Dash Sunset said to her and to the others.

“Your majesty I need you to lend me your body so that I might be able to communicate better with my wife who I know is still inside of Midnight Sparkle.”

Celestia looked at Sunset just as she was about to reply Rainbow took one look at the ghostly apparition in front of her and screamed.

“WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS THAT?!?” Rainbow screamed out in terror as she looked at the spirit of Sunset floating just a few feet above the ground in front of her.

“Hello Rainbow it is good to see you again.” Sunset said with a smirk on her face at the sight of Rainbow backing away from her terror etched on her blue face.

“What the hell are you?” Rainbow exclaimed out in terror.

Sunset just smiled warmly to her once former friend and calmly said to her.

“Rainbow it’s me Sunset Shimmer or rather the ghost of Sunset Shimmer.”

“I don’t understand how can you be here you’re…..you’re dead.” Rainbow said as she continued to back away from the spirit floating in front of her.

“Rainbow it really is me.” Sunset said as she floated towards her.

“Sunset we don’t have time for you scare the living daylights out of Rainbow like this.” Applejack injected trying to keep Sunset from doing any more real scaring towards Rainbow.

Sunset turned her attention then to her former mentor and tried to kneel before her. But, in the end was only able to float in front of her. Celestia smiled warmly at her former student before saying softly.

“Tell me what is your plan to end this battle and save your wife so that I won’t have to kill her?”

Sunset looked at her mentor then back at the battle before saying to Celestia.

“I need your body so that I can talk Twilight er I mean my wife down from her plan to destroy this world.” Sunset said as she again tried to kneel before her mentor yet once again could only float in front of her.

Celestia looked at Sunset with warmth in her eyes then said softly to her former student.

“You need not kneel before me child please tell me what is your plan?”

Sunset looked at her then spoke in a chilly ghostly voice.

“I wish to you use your body in the hopes of showing that Twilight is still very much loved here and that she doesn’t need Midnight to love her. Or show her that she isn’t alone in this world.”

Before Celestia could answer how ever all three heard a loud scream coming from the direction of the battle field. Each of the three turned their heads to see what had just happened. Midnight had flown into the air high above the school grounds and slammed her hands together screaming out as she called forth her power.

“Hear me children of the night come forth and win this battle for me so I might become whole again!” Midnight said as she slammed her hands together calling her demonic power forth.

Eight bolts of lightning shot down wards from the sky striking the ground a few feet from each of those already on the battlefield. Pinkie Pie and Rarity both screamed out at once and the rest of their friends suddenly froze in their places with fear etched on their faces. Midnight looked down from where she was floating in the air and grinned a toothy smile. Then dropped out of the sky and landed with a loud thunderus boom as her feet hit the cement beneath her. As she landed and the boom of her empack echoed throughout the area. Eight large black wolves began to appear in front of the four already ensued in battle against the demonic demon. Before Sunset could actually say anything Celestia, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash began to run towards the battlefield. Seeing that she now had three newcomers coming in fast to join their friends in open combat. Midnight whistled getting the wolves to all turn their heads towards her as she spoke out to them. Some of the wolves waged their tails while others licked their lips and a few growled and snarled as her words hit their black furry ears.

“My children I know you are..….hungry.” Midnight spoke with such a demonic voice that it was just dripping with evil lusting hate for her enemies that all stood before her frozen in fear.

“I don’t like where this is going not one damn bit.” Rarity said as she looked at Midnight then down at the eight wolves who still were captivated by Midnights presence.

“Children….DINER! diner….children...KILL THEM!” Midnight said as she pointed from the wolves to the four on the battlefield.

The wolves heads snapped back towards the four friends looking at them with fear in their eyes. Each of the eight wolves began to fully snarl and growl at each of the four as they began to reproach upon their meal.  Applejack and Rainbow Dash were just getting close enough to their friends when the wolves all leapt at their four friends standing there.  Fearing for the absolute worst both Applejack and Rainbow Dash also jumped towards them. Each of them in turn knocking two of their friends out of the way of the oncoming wolves.  The friends all landed a few feet from the flagpole out front of the school as Applejack climbed to her feet and yelled at her friends while one of the wolves leapt at her.

“GO YOU FOOLS! RUN...NOW!”

The wolf was able to grab onto Applejack’s right leg pulling her to the ground and began to rip and tear apart her leg as if it was paper in it's moul. Applejack screamed in pain while her friends tried to get to her side to do her aid. Pinkie was the first to get to Applejack's side. Reaching  into her coat pocket and pulling out a three day old cupcake and she threw it at the wolf. Hitting the beast in the face trying to get the animal to let go of her friends leg. This only enticed the animal to bit down harder effectively breaking Applejacks leg.

“GET THIS FUCKER OFF ME! GET IT OFF, GET IT OFF!” Screamed Applejack as she began to hit the animal with her bare hands.

Rainbow was able to get up behind the beast and grabbed it from behind pulling it towards her. The wolf feeling something was dragging it from behind turned and snapped at Rainbow Dash. Who let go almost immediately as its sharp teeth nearly caught onto her hands and arms. Screaming out in anger and fear of her friend being eaten alive Rainbow again grabbed the wolf by its hind legs pulling the animal towards her.

“You beast! Let her GO!” Screamed Rainbow Dash as she dug her fingers deep into the flesh and fur of the crazed wolf.

The wolf once again let go of its chew toy allowing Pinkie to grab Applejack by the shoulders and lacing her arms up and around her chest. Hosting the fallen farmer to a near standing position as she helped her friend limp off towards the school main entry doors. The other wolves began to circle Fluttershy and Rarity who both were too afraid to move for fear of being mauled like Applejack had been not moments ago.  Celestia drew her golden sword out from its sheath and yelled to Rainbow Dash who was closer to her than the others were.

“Rainbow Dash catch!” exclaimed Celestia as she raised her sword over her head to lob it over to the rainbow haired girl.

Rainbow Dash didn’t have time to look or to even try to catch the sword as the wolf leapt at her knocking her backwards and pinning her to ground. While lying on her back the wolf tried several times to maul Rainbows throat only to have her arm jabbed down its throat. This action caused the wolf to start to back away from its intended prey as Rainbows arms and hands were badly torn by the wolf's teeth. Just as the wolf was about to leap at her again Rainbow saw the glistening gleam of metal flying towards her and she smiled with a wicked grin. Rolling backwards so that she was now entirely on her stomach. The wolf leapt at her only to get hit with sword in its side letting out a loud yelp of pain as it came crashing to ground dead in front of Rainbow Dash. Rainbow looked over to see Celestia running towards her. Yelling as she ran towards Rainbow Dash and her friends.

“Rainbow use my sword to kill the other wolves and save your friends.” Celestia yelled as she rushed towards her friends.

Rainbow did as she was told she grabbed the sword by it’s handle and twisted it to the left then to the right pulling it out of the dead wolf’s body. Looking onwards Rainbow Dash could see that her friends Rarity and Fluttershy needed her help first. The two of them were being chased up the steps by two of the remaining seven wolves. Rarity screamed out as she pounded her fist against the doors of the school. Trying desperately to open them to avoid being mauled to death by the hungry beast that were right behind them.

“OPEN UP! OPEN UP! OPEN UP!.” Rarity screamed as she pounded on each the double blue steel doors of the school entry way.

Fluttershy looked behind her as the wolves began to close the distance between them and her. Each of the two wolves snarled at her while licking their lips in the anticipation of their upcoming meal. Rainbow fearing for her two friends immediately cut the head off the dead wolf that had been killed with Celestia’s sword and picked it up then threw it at the wolf closest to Fluttershy. When the head hit the wolf that was closest to Fluttershy it’s blood splattered all over her causing her to faint then and there. Rarity stopped what she was doing looked down at her fallen friend and feigned a half smile as the two wolves turned their heads and  both looked at Rainbow Dash. Who was charging both wolves with Celestia's sword drawn above her head. Screaming out as she charged up the path one of the two wolves crouched down and leapt at Rainbow.

“DIE YOU FURRY BASTARD!” Rainbow screamd as she brought the sword downwards.

The wolf's head came clean off and sailed into the air landing just a few feet from Fluttershy's stomach. Rainbow grinned as she wiped the blood off her face the charged the other wolf. Rarity screamed out in terror as the wolf tried to bite down on her left leg only to have its mouth impaled by Rainbow who managed to get to it first. The wolf snarled and yelped in pain as Rainbow twisted the blade in her hand until she fully cut the wolf's jaw off. Laughing coldly Rainbow Dash bent over and picked up the tongue of the freshly dead wolf and handed it to Rarity who looked at just as her face went green.

“Here Rarity why not use this as a belt for your next outfit that you make I am sure you can come up with….something cool for this item?” Rainbow said as she stuck out her hand towards Rarity holding the flopping tongue in her hand.

Rarity took one single look at the proffered tongue and gripped her stomach then wretched all over the stairs after which she glared at Rainbow Dash. Yelling at her just as Celestia came into view.

“Rainbow Dash that was totally unlady like of you to…..the very nerve of you to offer me something like that wagging disgusting thing like that.”

Rainbow just shrugged and looked out towards the battlefield. Pinkie Pie was still carrying Applejack towards the main doors and Rarity and Fluttershy were of little help. Celestia got to Rainbow Dash and looked over to where Princess Twilight was. Who was currently trying to reason with her other half but to no avail. Celestia had, had enough of the carnage that lay before her eyes. As she raised her hands to call forth a time freeze spell she heard Midnight Sparkle call out to her.

“Oh Celestia did you forget about the statue and it’s power there in”? called out Midnight as she swooped down out of the air and landed next to the statue.

“Midnight please let my friend Twilight go she doesn’t deserve to be your puppet. You are just causing more pain and more problems by using her like this”. Princess Twilight said as she tried to reason with Midnight.

Seeing how close Midnight was to the statue Celestia lowered her hands so that her palms were facing the statue and fired a red energy beam at it. The beam of energy came in fast but not fast enough for Midnight was able to fully block it with her sword.

“Nice try” Midnight said as she reached out taking a hold of the statue's base with her left hand while holding her unsheathed sword in her right hand.

A large black cloud of smoke arose from the statue as Midnight screamed out to the sky and all those around her to hear. Both Twilight and Midnight’s voice could be heard coming from the statue as they spoke in unison.

“Together we are one, together we are healed we live as one, we die as one” Midnight and Twilight said as one single voice.

As Midnight turned to face her enemies her cutie mark began to flash on her breastplate. Celestia saw now she only had a matter of moments before Twilight's soul was gone forever. Raising her hands up into the air she screamed out.

“Every one freeze in place” As she clapped her hands together then brought them down to her sides.

A white circle of energy was emanated from her body locking all those it touched in place. The only ones that it didn’t freeze in place was Midnight, Rarity and Celestia herself. Midnight looked around then smiled as her cutie mark started to flash on her breastplate. Rarity also looked around and couldn’t understand why everyone else was frozen in place yet she and the other two were not. Midnight laughed coldly as she crouched down then leapt back into the air flying over head towards the small party of friends frozen in place. Rarity saw Midnight coming in for flying attack towards Celestia and ran to push her out of the way. Celestia didn’t have time to react as Midnight came crashing down towards her using her shoulders to try to knock the pony turned human goddess off her feet and onto her back. Rarity got there just in time grabbing on to Celestia as Midnight came in for the attack. Rarity was able to push the Princess out of the way and took the full brunt of the attack herself. To say that Rarity was a little hurt from this latest attack would have been a complete understatement. She suffered eight broken ribs and a broken collar bone.

“Oh fuck that hurts like hell”! Screamed Rarity as she fell backwards rolling head over heels onto the ground sliding up to the flag pole.

Her skin scrapped and badly bruised from the rolling and the initial attack. Celestia  saw that Rarity was in no further condition to help with this batte. Drawing  her sword out and calling forth a bolt of lightning intent on ending the conflict once and for all she charged the demon possessed Twilight with all her might. The lightning bolt came crashing down and struck Midnight in her horn with it’s power. Looking around with a dazed and confused look Midnight’s eyes flashed back to Twilight's eye color for a momentary split second. Celestia saw this and tried one last final time to reach Twilight before needing to kill her and end this battle.

“Twilight I know you are still in there if you will not listen to me then there is some one to whom you will listen to”. Celestia called out to her.

“And just who is that dear Celestia? My mother, my father what about my brother or my little sister? Do you really think any of them can change the course of this battle. I will have my….”Midnight was stopped mid sentence when Sunset Shimmer's ghost suddenly appeared before her.

“Hello my darling wife...I know you are still in there fight her please come home to me, come home to all of us.” Sunset begged as she reached out for Twilight’s hand.

Midnight felt Twilight start to look around as Twilight's spirit began to fully take in the actual damage she had caused due to allowing vengeance into her heart. Tears began to fall from her face as it was now her voice and not Midnights voice that was speaking to Sunset.

“I can’t come home Sunset I can’t live without you. This pain I feel it hurts too much please I don’t want to be with you”.

“I know my love but you can not continue to do what you have done. You have already killed thousands of people all of whom were innocent in all this. Please renounce her and let love back into your heart again”. Sunset said as she held her hand out to Twilight.

As Twilight began to reach out for Sunset she saw getting out of the car the man that had killed her wife and a awful scowl came over her face. Her eyes once again changed to crimson red as she grinned wickedly then leapt into the air. Before either of the two of them could say anything or do anything Midnight using Twilight's body landed right in front of the man who had killed Sunset. Raising her sword above her head she was about to cut his head off when Rarity cried out.

“STOP”!

Midnight looked over to Rarity who spoke to Twilight in a pleading tone of voice.

“Twilight I know you are still with us. If you kill him then you become no better than him. Look to your wife do you really think she wants this for you? Do you really think she wants you to kill in her name. Think of all the people who have already killed think of all those that have died because of your need vengance. Please Twilight come back to us.” Rarity called out as Midnight looked on with anger in her heart.

Realizing that Rarity was right that Sunset would not want this for her Twilight dropped her sword and began to back away from the person that had killed her wife. Seeing this through Twilight's eye Midnight called to her in Twilight's mind.

“WHAT YOU DOING CHILD? KILL HIM”! Midnight screamed in Twilight's mind.

“I am doing what I should have done when you first appeared to me and made me kill all those people”. Twilight said as she ran towards Celestia.

Just as Midnight was starting to regain control over Twilight and her cutie mark was almost fully formed Twilight raced up to Celestia reaching out with her right hand. She grabbed Celestia’s left wrist and forcing it down so that her sword was now pointed directly at her breastplate. Looking into the goddesses eyes Twilight said only one word to her as she impaled herself on Celestia's sword.

“Goodbye”.

“NOOOO”. Rarity screamed out as she ran towards twilight who was starting to stumble backwards.

Twilight fell into Rarity's arms knocking the two of them to the ground together. As Rarity held her dying friend in her arms Celestia broke the spell that was binding everyone else in place. The wolves that remained on the battlefield fell over and died where they lay and the other four friends all though each of them were hurt Applejack worse than the others. All looked towards Rarity who was cradling Twilight in her arms rocking back and forth sobbing. Looking down at her fallen friend while sobbing Rarity said to her.

“Why Twilight why did you do this”?

Twilight smiled and held a blood soaked hand up to Rarity's snow white cheek staining her skin crimson red as her hand touched her cheek. Saying to her as the life began to leave her body and her spirit began to join her wife in the spirit realm.

“I did...it...to...stop that...monster”.

Twilight’s eyes rolled back into her skull and she breathed her last dying in her friend's arms. Rarity held Twilight tightly in her arms rocking back and forth sobbing while Celestia walked over to the rest of her friends. Looking at Princess Twilight who was also sobbing from this turn of events nodded to her then reached out and touched Applejack’s broken leg. Effectively healing it with a single touch. Looking at each of her friends saying to them all.

“I wish I could do more for you by bringing either of them back but all I can do is heal your battle wounds and move on from there. I….am truly sorry my friends”.

“Your majesty it is time we go we need to return Sunsets body to be buried here and we need to make our home battle ready for the demon that took control of Sunset”. Twilight said as she wiped away her tears.

As much as she would have wanted to stay and mourn the loss of her friend. The princess of friendship still had a duty that needed to be performed back in her home land. As Twilight began to approach the statue in order to leave Sunsets body came through it. In a full hero’s coffin complete with the flowers and oils that spike had gotten ready for her funeral back in Equestria. Sunsets spirit floated above as Twilight's spirit came into her line of vision reach out to her with an outstretched hand Sunset said to her wife’s spirit.

“Let's go home honey, take my hand. Let's go home. Sunset said as she reached out for Twilight's hand.

Twilight smiled taking her wife by her hand then the two of them departed the battlefield for the heavens that lay above them. The two were at last at peace in each other's embrace as they felt their souls vanishing into warmth and love they once had for each other.
