Richard and Rarity
Chapter 2
Previous ChapterNext ChapterEarly next day at Richard’s house.
The home was an average size American bungalow with green grass, small flower garden, driveway and single garage. Richard’s gray SUV was backed up close to the garage, the front of the vehicle showed some damage to the bumper and a turning signal.
Richard was snoring gently as he slept on a nearby brown leather couch. He pulled on a blanket and tried to roll over, but the shape of the couch made it uncomfortable, so he rolled back.
An orange striped cat meowed and sniffed the white pony laying on a duvet on the floor. The cat’s tail gently brushed along the pony’s nose as it sniffed more trying to learn about this new white creature.
“Aaaahhh-chooo… ow.. Ow..” She sneezed with pain.
The pony wiggled her nose, which itched, opening her blue eyes, the room slowly came into focus. She looked down and felt the soft cushion under her legs. Then she looked up at the strange creature snoring on a large couch. For a moment she had the image of a small green dragon laying on the couch the same way. She tried to stand up only to feel a sharp pain coming from her right front leg.
“Ouch… ow.. Ow..” The pony said and limped looking at the tall walls and concrete floor. She smelled the air and noticed that it was damp like she was in a cave.
The cat meowed and looking up at her and then rubbed itself on her left leg.
“Hello there little one, can you help a pony out and tell me where I am?” She asked the cat who looked at her with curiosity and rubbed its head again on her leg.
“I guess you don’t understand me,” The pony said, looking at the cat.
“I do,” Richard said with a yawn, trying to wake up.
Memories of last night flooded back into his mind and he snapped awake looking at the white pony who started to walk backwards until her rear bumped into a table.
“Who.. who are you, where am I?” She said with a frightened voice watching the creature stand up tall on its back legs.
“My name is Richard, this is my home, I kind of hit you with my car and then brought you here,” He said trying to explain.
Richard was only dressed in his blue PJs, his blond hair was a mess. He stretched out feeling the soreness in his neck and back.
“I was running and then two bright lights…” The pony said, trying to remember what happened.
“Are you hurt is there something I can do?” Richard asked noticing her limping.
“I want to go home… but I don’t remember where home is… I... Who am I?” She said and started to panic.
“Please calm down, I’m and not going to hurt you,” He said slowly approaching her,
"Keep back, I'm warning you," Her horn started glowing blue and some random objects in the room started floating in the air.
"Ok, ok, I just wanted to check if you are hurt," Richard sat back down.
"Are you a doctor?" She asked him suspiciously.
"Not really, but my brother is an animal doctor, and he knows how to treat ponies," He said holding his hands.
"I am not an animal," The white pony said, walking forward and felt the sharp pain again, "OW!" She almost fell forward.
"Please let me call my brother, he may be able to help," Richard suggested concerned about her.
About an hour later a small pickup truck marked Crawford Veterinary Services on the sides pulled into the driveway. A man opened the truck door and climbed out. He was wearing a light brown, gray outfit with blue jeans and work boots.
The doorbell rang and Richard opened the door looking up at a man with a yellow beard dressed in light brown jack jacket. He had the same color blonde hair and hazel green eyes as Richard.
“Hi Matt sorry to bother you this morning before work,” Richard said as he yawned still dressed in his blue PJs.
“Where is it?” Matthew said, sounding annoyed.
“She's in the basement,” Richard said as he stepped back allowing Matt inside.
“How the heck did you get a pony down there?” Matthew said, holding a large black bag.
“It wasn’t easy, my back is still hurting,” Richard said and started walking towards the kitchen.
“You got to stop bringing animals home Richard,” He said and slowly walked down the stairs following him.
“This is different than before,” Richard explained as he reached the basement floor.
“Like that dog, I had to put down, and then you needed rabies shots,” Matthew said, climbing down to the basement floor and looked up.
He froze on the spot as his eyes saw a snow white pony looking back at him with big blue eyes and a horn on its head.
“Like I said, this is different,” Richard gently jabbed Matt snapping him out of it.
“Must be a mutation or a form of dwarfism, I have never seen anything like this before,” Matthew said and dropped his bag.
The pony walked slowly with a limp on her front right leg, her eyes looked at them both as she kept her distance. Matthew noticed that the pony was hurt and snapped back to reality. Opening his bag he removed some medical instruments.
“This could be serious if her leg is broken,” Matthew said and slowly approached the pony cautiously. “I may need your help Richard to hold her still,” He motioned him to join him.
“Can you please show him your injured leg,” Richard said in a calm voice,
The pony stopped walking, looked at Richard and then Matthew. She sat down and stuck out her right hoof for him to examine.
“That is one smart pony, is there something you are not telling me Richard?” Matthew said, looking suspiciously at him as he gently grabbed the right leg and started examining it.
“Did you see the horn on her head?” Richard said changing the subject while watching him work.
“It must be glued on, she could have escaped from a circus, her mane looks like it was colored, and what kind of person puts eyeliner on a pony. ” Matthew said and the pony looked away from him with her nose in the air acting like she was offended.
“I think you hurt her feelings,” He said with a smirk.
“Anyways, based on a general assessment, it seems that she just has a sprain and a bruised shoulder, a fracture is possible, but I would need some X-rays,” Matthew said and then put on his stethoscope.
He pressed the stethoscope to her chest, listening and then moved it to different areas. Richard walked closer and the pony looked up at him thinking and then looked back at Matthew feeling the cold metal pieced being pressed against her.
“She seems to have situs inversus,” He said looking a bit confused stepped back.
“Is that serious?” Richard said concerned.
The white pony also looked at the doctor with a worried expression which also surprised him with the display of emotions.
“It could just be her heart or all her organs are reversed,” Matthew said, trying to explain, “Simply put, it’s the mirror opposite of you, me and most animals,” He said and then looked at him. “Look she is fine, it’s just very unusual,” Matthew finished and walked back to his bag.
“Hear that, you are a very special pony,” Richard said talking to her.
She sighed in relief and walked up to Richard before sitting back down again. Matthew pulled large a needle from his bag with some vials.
“What you have, here is a rarity Richard, this pony’s muzzle is too short, her eyes are bigger than normal and pointing forwarded. I’ll take some blood samples back to work for testing,” He said and started to approach her with the needle.
She shook her head and cowered away from Matthew not wanting to get poked with that needle. He tried to get closer and she bumped into Richard.
“Easy their girl this won’t hurt,” Matthew said as he aimed the needle. Suddenly the needle started glowing and was pulled out of his hand. "What the heck?” He said as the needle shot across the room and hit the dartboard right in the center like a dart.
Matthew walked across the room and pulled the needle out of the dartboard. Richard looked and the pony noticing that her horn was glowing, she looked back at him and her horn stopped glowing.
“Well, I think, I better get going,” Matthew said, clearing his throat and started packing his medical bag.
Richard followed his brother upstairs and then back to the front door.
“Please, Matthew can you keep this a secret?” He asked his brother .
“I will, because one will believe me anyways, Richard in the meantime, you should start looking into renting a place on a farm, a basement is no place to keep a pony,” He answered.
Matthew slipped on his boots, then opened his bag again. He passed him a pill bottle and a yellow book.
“What’s this?” Richard said, looking at the pills and then the book which was titled ‘Horses for Dummies’
“These pills are for horses, only give her half the dose for pain. Also, this is a guidebook for my idiot brother, I'll be back later with a small leg brace,” He said and pushed the screen door open.
Richard watched his brother climb back into the truck and then reversed out of the driveway.
“Oh the nerve of that male, do I look like a pin cushion?” The pony said as her horn glowed.
“He was only trying to help you, taking blood for testing is part of his job," Richard said sitting back down on the couch.
She walked around the basement limping still exploring her surroundings.
"Do you have a name?” He asked her.
“Hmm… my name… I just can’t remember, it’s like it is at the tip of my tongue, but I can’t say it,” The pony said as she sat up and tapped her head with her right hoof.
Richard looked at her and then at her rear spotting the three purple diamonds. She looked at him feeling strange the way he was staring at her rear.
“How about the name Diamond?” Richard suggested.
“Diamond,” She repeated and thought about it for a moment, but that name brought up an unpleasant feeling. "No," The pony shoke her head.
"How about the name Pearl?" He suggested.
"Pearl sounds like a nice name, very well Richard, until I remember my name, you can call me Pearl," She said with a gentle smile.
