Guitar Duel

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Thunderstruck approached the front of Canterlot High School, his trusty guitar in tow. He suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder and turned around to see Sonata.

“Hey Thunderstruck! I’m sorry about last night. I apologize for Adagio and Aria for being so rude.”

Thunderstruck simply smiled and waved it off. “Hey, don’t worry about it. I’ve been treated worse. Believe me.”

Sonata blushed as she looked down at her feet. “So, would you still like to hang out? Maybe at lunch?”

“Sure, I’d like that.” Thunderstruck replied, his face blushing as well.

“Oh, I almost forgot.” Sonata said. “My friends and I have a really great idea, and we need your help.”

“Sure, what is it?”

“My friends and I think it would be a great idea if the school put on a concert. All we need is your help to convince Principal Celestia to approve the idea.”

Thunderstruck thought it over for a moment. “I’d be glad to help! But why do think that Principal Celestia needs to be convinced?”

Sonata became anxious and bit her lower lip. “Well, you see the thing is we tried to hold a battle of the bands about a year ago. Let’s just say that it got a little too competitive.”

Thunderstruck raised an eyebrow. “Competitive how?”

Sonata thought quickly to come up with an answer that wouldn’t reveal what really happened.

“Um, well the thing is...things got a bit heated between us and the Rainbooms. There was a bit of a fight and things turned nasty. But that’s all in the past! Adagio, Aria, and I have moved on I swear!”

Thunderstruck looked at Sonata’s pleading face. “I know that competitiveness can bring out the anger in people. But I believe that you mean it when you say you’ve moved on. I’ll talked with Principal Celestia about approving the concert.”

Sonata smiled and embraced Thunderstruck. “Thank you! You’re the best!” Thunderstruck was a little taken aback by the hug, but he didn’t mind. He just wanted it to last a little longer.

The bell rang and Sonata released Thunderstruck. “I’ll catch up with you at lunch, okay?” Thunderstruck turned and headed inside.

Sonata smiled and waved, but she soon frowned and let out a sigh. She hated lying to Thunderstruck. He was such a sweet guy with a kind heart. Sonata felt terrible for involving him in this scheme.

Adagio and Aria came up behind Sonata. “Did he fall for it?” Adagio asked.

Sonata was so spooked that that she nearly leapt ten feet into the air. She turned and faced Adagio. “Yeah, Thunderstruck is going to speak with Principal Celestia.”

“Good. Now we just have to make sure those Rainbooms don’t mess things up again.” Said Aria.

Adagio noticed that Sonata looked uneasy. “What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you actually feel bad for that Thunderstruck guy.”

“It’s just...it really doesn’t seem fair to drag him into this.” Sonata replied.

Aria stepped in front of Sonata. “What’s more important Sonata? Regaining our powers, or some dumb human?”

“Our powers.” Sonata murmured.

Adagio put a hand on her shoulder. “Very good. Now we just have to make sure those Rainbooms don’t interfere.”

Thunderstruck knocked on the door to Principal Celestia’s office. “Come in.” Celestia said as she looked up from her paperwork. Thunderstruck opened the door and entered her office. “Ah, Thunderstruck. What brings you here?”

“Well Principal Celestia, I want to talk to you about the possibility of the school holding a concert.” Said Thunderstruck.

A look of concern came over Celestia’s face. “A concert? I don’t know…”

“I don’t mean to interrupt, but hear me out.” Thunderstruck continued. “I know that there were some problems the last time. Sonata told me all about it.”

Celestia’s eyes went wide with shock. “Really? She told you everything that happened?”

“Yes, but Sonata has assured me that she and her friends have moved on. Will you please consider it?” Thunderstruck pleaded.

Celestia thought for a moment. Did Sonata really tell Thunderstruck the truth? While it was true that the Dazzlings were responsible for turning the talent show into a singing competition, and nearly draining the school of all of it’s magic, their magical pendants had been destroyed. They had become regular teenage girls.

“I will think it over and give you my answer later today. Is that alright Thunderstruck?” Celestia asked.

“Thank you Principal Celestia, I await your decision.” Thunderstruck smiled and showed himself out of her office.

At lunch, Thunderstruck met up with Sonata in the cafeteria. “So, how did it go with Principal Celestia?” Sonata asked.

“She said that she would have an answer for me later today.” Thunderstruck responded. “I’m hoping she says yes. Maybe you could perform at the concert? You have a great singing voice.”

“Well, I don’t know.” Sonata turned away in embarrassment. A guy with Blue hair and wearing a black jacket then approached Thunderstruck.

“So, I hear that you’re good with a guitar.” The guy said with a smirk.

“Umm, who are you?” Thunderstruck asked.

“The name’s Flash Sentry, and I’m one of the best guitar players in Canterlot.”

Thunderstruck just looked at Flash quizzically. “Okay, good for you.”

Flash removed his guitar from it’s case. “I was hoping that we could have a friendly competition.”

“What did you have in mind?”

“I challenge you to a guitar duel.”

Thunderstruck smiled and grabbed his guitar. “Alright Flash, I’ll be your huckleberry.” Thunderstuck and Flash then began their guitar duel.

After the duel, the entire cafeteria broke out in cheering and applause. Flash Sentry conceded defeat. “Wow! You really are good!”

Thunderstruck shook Flash’s hand. “Hey, you’re great yourself.” As they were congratulating each other, Principal Celestia entered the cafeteria.

“Well, it seems the passion for music is truly strong here.” She said. “Students, I have an announcement to make. This Saturday there will be a rock concert right here at Canterlot High! Any bands or individuals that want to perform, please sign up at my office.”

Sonata hugged Thunderstruck. “You did it Thunderstruck! Thank you so much for getting the concert approved!”

Thunderstruck’s face turned bright red as he blushed. “I’m just glad I could help.”

Sunset and Twilight both watched from the crowd. As soon as Sonata left, they approached Thunderstruck. Sunset tapped Thunderstruck on the shoulder. “Hey, can we speak with you for a moment in private?”

Thunderstruck followed Sunset and Twilight into the music room. “So, what did you want to talk about?”

“We couldn’t help but overhear that you helped the Dazzlings to convince Principal Celestia to approve a concert.” Twilight said.

“Well, yeah. Is that a problem?” Thunderstruck asked.

Sunset scratched the back of her neck. “The last time there was a concert here involving the Dazzlings, there were some problems.”

Thunderstruck simply smiled and waved them off. “Don’t worry. Sonata explained that the there was some arguing and fighting, but everything is cool now.”

Sunset let out a sigh. “Thunderstruck, Sonata wasn’t being entirely honest with you. The truth is that Adagio, Aria, and Sonata are actually sirens from another dimension. They tried to use their powers to drain the school of its magic, but the Rainbooms and I defeated them.”

“It’s true.” Twilight said. “Sunset is from the same world as the sirens, and is actually a unicorn.”

Thunderstruck broke out laughing. “Okay, I get it! This a prank. A school tradition to initiate the new student. Well done! Alright, you can bring out the hidden camera now!”

Sunset and Twilight both knew that Thunderstruck would never believe them without any proof. They both grabbed the magic crystals around their necks and activated their magic. Sunset and Twilight hovered in the air as they grew pony ears and tails.

Thunderstruck stared at them silently for a moment. “Okayyyyyy…” He then fell backwards onto the floor and passed out.

Twilight face-palmed herself. “Oh boy.”
