"I think it's safe to stop now....." Patch panted, dropping Clover onto the floor and making a pathetic attempt to wipe the blood off her side.
Sweetheart instinctively galloped forward- she was the only one apart from Melody (who had been forced into it by her mother) who had done first aid and she still held onto her dream of being a doctor, so everypony just assumed it would be her job. "Does anypony have a phone?" she asked.
Bright Eyes nodded, grabbing out her phone and fumbling through the apps until she was dialing the number that had been drilled into her mind for years.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
Forcing the lack of response into the back of her mind, Sweetheart wiped the blood away from Clover's flank until she could properly see where it was coming from: a tiny, but very deep, hole. She pressed onto it with her hooves, looking around instinctively.
"Melody!" she yelled, noticing her friend's stockings. "Give me your stockings!"
"Eh?"
Patch tackled the hot pink mare, forcefully pulling her stockings off and handing them to Sweetheart, who carefully tied it around the wound.
"Man," she whispered. "Just last week I told myself that Teddy arguing with me was worth it to not get covered in blood all the time.....Is anypony else hurt?"
There was no response.
"Right," muttered Bright Eyes. "Now we need to figure out what we're going to do. First of all, Sweetheart, Bonbon, Patch- it's about time one of you said 'I told you so'."
"I told you so!" yelled Patch.
"Alright then. Now that we've gotten that out of the way......"
She looked around. They were in some sort of grassy plain, the smoking remains of their little town visible in the distance. It looked like Starlight's wasn't the only house that was blown up. With a keen eye, they could see the things marching around.
"I say we stay here for a while," Starlight decided. "But if they come, we leave. Hopefully soon the police or army or whatever will be pouring in to help."
"Sorry," asked Melody. "could you repeat everything you just said?"
They all turned to stare at her. "What?" she asked.
"Melody," asked Sweetheart nervously. "Can you hear me?"
No answer.
"She was pretty close to the explosion....." muttered Starlight.
Melody bit her lip. "Guys, what are you talking about?"
Damn, Sweetheart thought. Now she needs help too. I guess really truly I won't get a chance to tell them after all.
"Err- does anypony have any paper?"
"Here," volunteered Bright Eyes. "Just type on the texting screen on my phone."
Sweetheart nodded and grabbed the phone, pressing a few buttons and ending up with an on-screen keyboard and a bunch of texts from Bright Eyes' dad. She started typing letters into it before showing it to Melody.
The explosion probably damaged your hearing.
"Wh-what?" the hot pink mare stamered.
Sweetheart simply nodded. She sighed, looking at her hooves. "Clover, I know it's really truly not your fault, but I had really truly hoped I wouldn't get covered in blood for another year."
She took Bright Eyes' phone back and erased the last message, typing in her own. This was the only way- the alternative was Melody asking what all the fuss was about and having to type it in and explain, and that would take away the impact. She sighed, and handed it to her friend, who promptly gasped.
"What do you mean, you're pregnant?"
Everypony gasped.
"What? When did this happen?"
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Does Teddy know?"
"How far along are you?"
"How the hell did you get pregnant?"
"Err- About a month ago, Teddy told me not to, yes he knows, about a month, and I had sex."
Patch continued to stare, open-mouthed, as if it was a concept she couldn't possibly grasp.
"You had sex?"
"Yes." Then added, for good measure, "With Teddy."
"When?!"
"Several times, one of which got me pregnant."
"But- but-"
"Shut up, Patch!" snapped Starlight, stepping forward. "Congrats, Sweetheart. Is that what you and Teddy were arguing about?"
"Yeah. He wanted me to- to get an- an ab- he said we were too young to look after a foal. I was going to tell you at the sleepover, but then we started trying on saddles, and then we were busy watching TV and I forgot, and then....well, you know the rest."
She sighed. "I wonder if Teddy's okay now."
"I'm hungry!" whined Bonbon.
"Me too...." mumbled Clover, stumbling to her hooves.
Starlight sighed. "I'll go to the local store and see if anypony's there. If it's empty I'm stealing."
Starlight trotted off. Eh? Where's she going?
Bright Eyes read the look on my face, typing something into her phone and passing it to me. She's going to buy/steal food.
Right. That makes sense. Hopefully she gets paper and pens too. That phone battery's not gonna last forever.
I saw Clover and couldn't help but notice my stocking tied around her flank. I realised awkwardly that Patch had to tackle me to get it off because I couldn't hear Sweetheart. Damn, probably looked like I care more about my clothes than Clover.
I trotted over to her. I know she can't really stand on her hind legs to type a message, but I'd rather sit in silence with her than on my own. Poor girl. And to think just last month we were all making silly little jokes at each other's expense. That time we went to see that weirdo who could 'read minds' and they made me walk around all day with a post-it note on my head saying 'Dead dove, do not eat' so the mind-reader wasn't scarred for life without any warning.
And here I am now.
In a few minutes Starlight comes back, a brown bag like the one Bonbon used to have when we were ten slung over her shoulder. She dumped it onto the ground and it fell open, revealing a few bandages, pens and paper (thank God), a diary for some reason, and a few dozen chocolate bars.
Yes! Pens and paper! Good, I was starting to worry about that phone battery. Patch is horrible at charades.
I'd tell you what happened next, but you'd never believe me.
