Dusky Sky
Finale
Previous ChapterNext Chapter"And, if you'll look this way, you'll see the diary of Surprise and Lady Dusky Sky, chronicling their time during the Great Lunar-Griffin War. Both of them fought in it, but it was Dusky Sky who wrote the WingClaw constitution, a series of essays that created a fair and equal government for the Lunar Empire. Later, she and Surprise negotiated peace talks with the griffins" the tour guide smiled out at the small crowd that had gathered before her, all of them staring at the old leather book with golden corners.
"Twenty years later, Dusk Sky was offered to be turned into an alicorn, but she refused. Five year after that, she married a griffin named Talon, and together they created the first ever hippogriff." The crowd turned to stare at the picture of a familiar half pegasus half griffin that hung from the wall next to the journal.
The tour guides voice dropped an octave. "The exact time was unknown, some say that it was ten years later, others say it was five, but everypony agree on one thing. Surprise caught yellow hoof fever. She only had a week to live. Upon hearing this, Lady Dusky Sky rushed to her dearest friends side. Surprise died only a few seconds later."
The foals and adults alike listened to this somberly, many glancing at a portrait of a beautiful white pegasus with a yellow mane and purple eyes than smirked down at them. "However, it got even worse" the guide pushed on, gathering everyponies attention once more. "Yellow Hoof Fever is highly contagious. Dusky Sky caught it from her friend. In retrospect she never should of have entered the med bay without protection, but she insisted. She died holding her best friends hoof."
"Princess Cadence later discovered that heartbreak was just as much a factor as the fever. Poor thing couldn't even summon the energy to get a drink. The memorial for the two ares held over twenty thosand ponies, all paying their respects to the two heroes" the guide shook herself briskly. "Any questions?"
A small pegasus colt raised a hoof. "You said that Dusky was jealous of her sister, so why didn't she agree to becoming an alicorn?" Th guide smiled down at the young pony. "Good question, young stallion" she chuckled, smiling at him. "And I'm afraid we may never know the answer. When asked about it, all our Lady would say is that 'I made a promise.' We dissected the journal, but there was nothing about this promise. We can only assume it came after the war."
The guide led the group to a large marble and gold building with a domed roof. Inside were two statues, one of an orange marble pegasus in a regal pose and straight cut bangs and another Pegasus, this one granite with a curly mane. "Dusky Clouded Sky- D-Daughter of Magic" the colt, who was only just learning to read, stammered out, before turning to the malachite Pegasus. "Surprise Party Pie- Daughter of Laughter. What does that mean?" He asked, turning to look at the guide.
She smiled down at the inquisitive youth. "It is referring to their parents. Twilight Sparkle is the Element Of Magic . After their deaths, we discovered that Surprise is the only daughter of Pinkie Pie, the element of laughter.Dusky never knew this though." The guide glanced up, and upon seeing who was at the entrance, the smile fell off her face. "Come on, I'll take you to the gardens now" she said quickly, and ushered the group out.
There was dead silence in the room, before the sound of hoofsteps began to echo. The pony could fly, but she had quickly discovered that it was almost soothing. Staring up at the two statues who towered over her, she could almost imagine them being real ponies, and that they had just decided to stay still for a few moments.
After a few seconds of eyeing the statues, the pony sighed, before taking out a single blue rose and laying it out in front of the statues. The figure sat there for a heartbeat, head down, before rising to her hooves and trotting to entrance, stopping once more at the door.
Starry Night gave her sisters statue one last sad smile. "Happy thousandth birthday, sis" she whispered, before flying away.
Nine Hundred And Ninety Five Years Ago- Twenty Years Before The Death of Dusky Sky and Surprise Pie
It was a beautiful nights, even by Equestria standards. Save for a few clouds scattered here and there, it was a mostly clear and beautiful night, and most ponies would be asleep. The batponies, however, were not. They were working hard, repairing damages, ordering others about or helping carry supplies.
And, up in the sky, two blurs, one white, one orange, shot through the sky at impossible speeds.
Dusky Sky laughed as she cut through the air like it was water. Glancing down, her wings almost froze up on her. Surprise was flying, while lying on her back and grinning up at her. Seeing her friends face, the grey pegasus laughed, before spinning back into the normal flying position, and dropping down. Without hesitating, Dusky dropped down with her, both of them pulling up when they were close to the lake.
Neither of them realized that in just twenty short years sickness would cripple their bodies. They spent hours flipping, twisting, showing off, acting like a pair of schoolfillies. The sky was already starting to brighten when the pair finally took a minute to rest on a cloud just in front of the mountain, where they lay together for just a moment. After a beat of silence, Dusky turned to look at her companion. "Do you still remember the stars?" She asked her.
Surprise smiled lightly, and began to point with her snowy hoof. "Polaris, the big dipper, Cygnus, Pegasus and . . . " she trailed off, brow furrowed. "Draco" Dusky filled in, and Surprise rolled her purple eyes at her. "Know it all" she muttered, gaining a droll look. The two lay side by side, tails touching. "I'm going to move to Canterlot" Surprise admitted. The 'so I can be with you' went unsaid. "So am I" Dusky said instantly, and the poofy maned pegasus grinned at her, delighted.
"Dusky Sky!" It was Thestral, probably wanting some advice for where to put something. With a sigh, the orange pegasus rose to her hooves, and started to fly away, only to feel a tugging on her tail. Turning, she saw Surprise standing on it, eyes big. "Stay with me?" She asked, with surprising vulnerability.
Dusky flew back to their cloud, and, after a few times, Thestral seemed to get the idea, as there were no more shouts. "Always" Dusky said, taking one of Surprises hooves with her own. "Forever?" The white pegasus asked, and violet met sapphire. "Forever and ever" she murmured, resting her chin between the smaller Pegasus' shoulder blades.
The sun was starting to rise over the mountain, and the two watched as the sun was painted a beautiful tricolor of orange pink and blue. It was still early enough that no birds were chirping, and the wind was barely existent, which meant that Surprise was able to hear her best friends words clear and easy.
"I promise."
