Chapter 7: Elucidation

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Sans walked up into his room and laid on his bed facing the ceiling above him. He needs some space after that experience which gave him a migraine. The feeling of someone running around his head really did irritated him a bit. His head is the definition of pure nightmare. The fact that he couldn't sleep well with it being his dream mostly. In some cases, he would dream of the child freeing every monster and Sans could see himself on top of Mt. Ebott, feeling the radiant sun and the fresh breeze that went through him....but all that was suddenly replaced with him back in the Underground back at his station, seeing the child with a knife on their right hand with a menacing smile. The feeling that everything you've ever hoped for will be crushed and destroyed after a few moments. It was pointless to dream for a happy ending now and here he is, alive and well, for the moment. Sans was thinking what to do next and the only obvious option was to tell the girls what he's up against. If he wouldn't tell them, all of them would be doomed to die due to the fact that he will soon die, leaving that thing running around seeking its next victim to kill. Sans sighed at his thought.

"i should just tell them. No point in hiding it now that they've seen my memories. I hate it when someone does that reading-the-mind magic, but who am i to blame? I knew it had to come out soon. Welp, better get down there." Sans thought as he got up, fixed himself and started to go downstairs slowly.

As the girls chowed down on their burgers, they had a few conversations of themselves about their future plans after this explanation that Sans will say when gets down.

"So, Applejack, what are your plans after this?", Sunset said as she wiped bits of burger on her mouth.

"Ah could hit the hay after this... And ah need some space after all of that earlier, if 'ya know what I mean", Applejack replied.

"I could use some shut eye too. That exploit was very unpleasant", Rarity added.

Not long after, the girls heard footsteps from upstairs. Came down was Sans with his usual hands in his jacket's pockets. He offered them a weak smile as to the truth that he was about explain. Sans made his way to his chair before where his head was rudely interrupted by Sunset's memory check ability. He sat down and folded his fingers together and looked at the girls.

"You know, what you did earlier, isn't nice." Sans said as he eyed Sunset, still holding the burger in her hands.

"S-Sorry, Sans. We just want to help. You were freaking out and we thou-," Sunset replied as she was cut in by Sans.

"Well you thought wrong, pal. Now you saw what i've been through and they're coming." Sans sighed heavily as he felt disappointed at Sunset, who clearly doesn't know how to respect someone's privacy, especially if that someone really had a dark past.

"Welp, can't change the past now. So tell me.... What did you see in there?", Sans said as she eyed all of the girls. No one was able to speak up as that horrifying experience sent chills down their spine. Appalled, they kept quiet until Sans spoke up:

"By the looks on your faces, i guess you already know the answer. So, you saw someone in my head... A human i suppose?"

The girls nodded slowly.

"Hmmm.... And i guess you saw what it did to us, huh?" Sans not taking an eye off the girls as Rainbow finally spoke.

"Yeah. Who was that?" Rainbow asked.

"An old friend... Well, i guess the term 'friend' doesn't really fit into their personality." Sans said as Twilight spoke next.

"I'm just curious, Sans. Why do you refer the child as 'they'?"

"Glad you asked. Lemme ask you a question: did you see anything suspicious when me and the kid fought?"

Sunset observed that the child's clothes were different during Sans' fight.

"Yeah. The kid's clothes were different. The first time we saw that they wore a striped pink/purple and blue shirt with brown pants and shoes then after you...”, Sunset cleared her throat and continued.

"killed them, it wore something different. It wore a striped green and yellow shirt and had that creepy smile." Sunset said as she shook her head.

"Mhmm. There are two sides to them. We refer humans as 'they' 'cause they can be neither good nor evil inside. Their true intentions resides in their actions. I'm not gonna lie, girls. They once saved us from a prison that we thought we could never leave ever again."

"Us? There are others just like you, Sans?" Rarity asked.

"Yeah. Monster kind like me got saved by that kid. I thought i finally got our happy ending until they... You know. Decided to go back on their word and kill everyone." Sans shrugged. "That's why i never liked humans. They fake their intentions to fool others but deep down inside, being a goody-two-shoes isn't enough for them. Their curiosity always intrigued me... How they want to try new things. But the curiosity of the kid went too far. I gotta say, for the first time, i felt chills run up my spine," Sans chuckled but it was a weak laugh.

"Well, some humans right?", Pinkie replied with a soft tone in her voice.

"Yeah, some of 'em. I don't mean you girls. You girls are nice and all, and i hope you stay that way," Sans said with a hopeful grin.

"Don't worry, Sans. We will certainly NOT act as grotesque and horrifying like that malicious child," Rarity said with a determined tone with arms crossed.

"You can count on us, Sansy," Pinkie said as she gave the skeleton a thumbs-up and a beaming smile.

"Yeah! And are you kidding me? We saved our school from crazy magic beings and.." Rainbow turned to Sunset and Twilight and she regretted, "uhhh... No offense guys." she said as she scratched the back of her head.

Sunset and Twilight sighed, "None taken," the two said in unison, making the girls giggle including Sans.

"Heh heh. Thanks girls."

"No problem, Sans," Sunset said as she punched him lightly.

"So uhhhh....hate to interrupt. If this kid is still out there, then we gotta stop them now," Rainbow as she punched her other palm.

"Honestly, i don't know when are they gonna come. All we can do is wait."

"What?! You mean we're just gonna have to wait for the news to say there's a kid rampaging through town?", Rainbow argued while Sans lets out a heavy sigh.

"Buddy, i know you want to go out there and be a hero... But what you're asking for is a fight where no one wins. And i mean no one." Sans said as his eyes grew black again.

Silence entered without a single word that came out of the girls' mouth. Not knowing what to say, they kept quiet as Sans gave them a seemingly death stare. Sans continued to speak.

"You saw that they keep coming back, right? Even though you think you won, you don't win, you CAN'T win even if you tried really hard. It took them 73 tries just to land a hit on me. I guess i'm pretty good at my job, huh?", Sans chuckled for a moment. "Anyways, what i'm trying to say is...no one can stop them. Believe me, my friends did but their efforts were a waste. I should be dead right now, not having this conversation with you girls."

"Don't say that! We're glad that you're here. If you weren't here, we wouldn't know about this problem you're having and chances are, we would be dead too." Sunset said as she touched Sans' shoulder. The skeleton fixed his eyes on her lime green eyes and Sans averted his eyes.

"That's why he brought you back, Sans. We also saw that you're talking to someone in that memory of yours. I don't know who that is but...is he your father?" As Sunset said this, Sans looked back with a shocked expression.

"So... you saw him too, huh? Yeah, he's my dad. Well, technically I'm just a part of him; me and my bro." The girls glared at him and were quite shocked.

"You're a part...of your dad? How is that possible?" Twilight asked as she scratched her head. Sans just shrugged and explained further more.

"Long story short, he fell into his own creation. Accidents do happen, I guess. We just popped into existence and there we are at Snowdin."

"Ah'm sorry, Sans. Really...we all are." Applejack told him and the girls nodded.

"Don't sweat it, bud. So....going back on topic," Sans said.

"Ohhh...Okay. We'll find another way, Sans. We always do." Twilight added.

"How? I mean, you clearly saw that kid is nothing but a merciless soul without feeling any remorse? How could you plan to stop such an abomination? If your answer is to fight like me, well i won't stop 'ya. Indeed, we all have to fight, but the end is inevitable...we all die." Sans explained leaving Twilight and the girls speechless.

Twilight cupped her chin and tried to think of another solution but every time she thinks of one, it had a back door because the major predicament is that the child keeps coming back. It keeps returning until its opponent is done for. Too DETERMINED to stop, but one thought came to her.

"What if...we befriended them? Or more specific, try to change their ways." Twilight suggested leaving Sans demented.

"Uhhhhhh....what? Did you hit your head on something or are you really serious?"

"I am serious, Sans."

"Didn't you hear me before bud? They are MURDERERS for crying out loud. They killed my family....my brother...without even feeling any remorse or sorry or MERCY. You think your so-called 'friendship' will save the day? My brother believed that they are still good, that they can be better, but what did he get in return? UNDESERVED DEATH. If you even try that, you will meet my brother soon enough and i can't allow that to happen. Not anymore. I've seen to many of my friends die. I just....can't bear it anymore." Sans said as he wept in tears, still with his eyes blackened at his grin permanently on his face. Sunset held Sans' hand and comforted him.

"Sans, I know you think this is not gonna work, but hear what we're going to say. Please."

The weeping skeleton began to calm down as the feeling of Sunset's smooth skin holding his hand made him comfortable. For a long time, he hasn't held something soft... until now.

"Okay. I'll listen."

Twilight breathed in heavily and exhaled, preparing for her side of explanation.

"Okay. Here's what I have in mind. You referred the child as 'they' correct? That means that there are two sides of them and one is trapped in the possession of the other. The reason I said that we should try to change her ways is because--do you remember what we told you about what happened at the Friendship Games? I was Midnight Sparkle then, but Sunset reached out to me, to help me realize that I shouldn't let others control who I am. And in Camp Everfree? I was scared that my power might lose control, but because of my friends that are by my side, they helped me overcome my fears. I think that someone inside is trying to take control again, but isn't strong enough. That's where friendship comes in. We need to strategize on how we can get close enough to help them. Sans, you have that technique where you summon blue bones to put the enemy in place, right?" Twilight asked as Sans just stared into her eyes. She really planned this while Sans didn't really thought of this.

"Uhhh...earth to skeleton? I need an answer."

"Oh. Yeah, I do." Sans as he snapped his fingers and a blue bone appeared.

"Hmmm....okay. So, we just need that technique of yours to mobilize them, then we can move in and help" Twilight told him as she fixed her glasses.

"Wow. You really are a nerd, aren't 'ya?" Sans chuckled as Twilight blushed a little.

"Thanks."

"Wow, Twilight. You just planned this now and we're just here listening to your genius-ness." Sunset added as she scratched the back of her head.

"Ah. It was nothing, really. It was quite easy. It's like a situation where someone has an identity crisis. The only difference is that this time we have to be very careful as it is said by Sans... this thing is a rampaging demon child." Twilight explained.

Sans and the girls were amazed at her explanation. The skeleton was completely dumbfounded as he had no idea what kind of magic or sorcery this 'friendship' they have. After every story that Sans heard, he was confused at their friendship and all. He might be a friendly monster, but he hasn't seen this kind of magical friendship before. Each trait is in a certain person, just like the humans that fell down and were eventually killed by Asgore. The traits have certain kind of abilities like Rarity for instance. She can conjure diamond shaped objects out of her hands. Fluttershy has the ability to communicate animals. No wonder she is kind.

Seven girls. Seven souls just like the ones in the Underground, but no one had the DETERMINATION trait. It was very rare to see those kind of souls...until they came.

"Okay. Let me just...process everything you just said. Wow...." Sans said as he rubbed his temples slowly in a circular motion.

"So...my turn now. All I can say is I'm.... just bamboozled by all of this," Sans chuckled. "Well, I never tried that before, due to the fact that you girls weren't there and I just kept... throwing my attacks on them. It could...work, but I'm not sure yet. To do this, you all are going to face a life and death situation. I'm just worried that you might get hurt or even worse...killed in the process. It's not easy to convert someone from bad to good instantly. I'm gonna have to make sure that won't happen to any one of us. Are you girls up for this? I'm just saying this is a huge risk that you might regret on doing." Sans explained with a worried tone in his deep, yet calm voice.

The girls weren't sure what to say because indeed, there's a possibility that it will backfire. They exchanged looks with each other and slightly nodded. Fluttershy was very worried but Sunset sat next to her and comforted her that it will work...

It has to...

After a few moments, Sunset breathed in and out and turned to Sans.

"What other choice is there? I mean, this is the only possible way to end this. Even if we tried doing your way, they'll keep coming back, right? We just have to hope."

Sans was taken back by her bold move. She was definitely right. Repeating the cycle of death isn't really the best solution since their opponent won't back down easily or they might not ever. Sans pondered on this and sighed heavily.

"I guess you're right. The best thing to do is...hope, I guess." Sans replied.

"B-But...all those innocent people will get killed. Y-You s-said you aren't sure when are," Fluttershy gulped, "they going to come."

"I know, kid. Truth is we can't save everyone, can we? I'm truly sorry but I can't tell when their arrival will take place. We just have to wait." Sans made a good point. Some sacrifices have to be made just to save everyone.

"Fluttershy, darling, he's right. We must accept the truth. Whatever happens, we'll be there together to stop..," Rarity cleared her throat, "them." The shy girl nodded slowly at her and Rarity, in exchange, gave her a hug of reassurance. Sans stood up from his chair and walked over to Fluttershy and kneeled in front of her.

"Kid, a guy like me hates making promises. But, I assure you. We'll make this work because failure isn't an option to take. I PROMISE you, we'll see through this." Sans said with his deep and soothing voice that made Fluttershy jump from her seat and hugged Sans tightly, never wanting to let go. Sans was shocked but it was fine for him. He knew she needed someone to hug with, especially when someone like her is very sensitive. Sans returned the favor as he also gave her a hug.

"You promise, ok? For all of us?" Fluttershy whispered to Sans.

"I promise, kid." Sans said with DETERMINATION.

Moments later, Fluttershy was still hugging Sans and he was feeling a little embarrassed. "Heh. 'Kay kid. Hug's over," Sans chuckled. Fluttershy laughed softly also as she slowly ended the hug while still holding his shoulders. She suddenly hugged him again and returned to her seat with her blushing a bit and the same goes for the skeleton. Sans smiled at her and she gave him a sweet smile too, knowing his promise will hold and not break. He stood up and went back to his seat, with a slight blush on his cheeks. He sat down and looked at the clock above the entrance to his house. To his surprise, it was already past 3PM in the afternoon.

"Huh. Time really flies that fast. Well, I guess it's time for you girls to go if you have any plans that needs to be finished." The girls were also surprised as they didn't notice the time they have consumed.

"Does anyone have any plans after this?", Sunset asked.

"I need to take a breather after all of this, darling. It was just very disturbing and this will ruin my beauty sleep for sure," Rarity said with a worried tone.

"Yeah, no kidding. I felt chills while listening and I might not ever sleep peacefully again after everything we've seen," Rainbow added.

Sans glared at Sunset with a brow raised," I wonder who's fault is that." Sunset felt ashamed as she regretted seeing everything Sans has been through.

"Sorry girls. I guess I shouldn't have done that earlier," Sunset rubbed her arm.

"Ya think?" Applejack replied as she had her hands on her hips with an eyebrow raised.

"It's our fault girls. We were too curious to see what was in Sans' head. We should be the ones who are ashamed," Twilight said as Sunset smiled a little.

"Yeah, I guess you’re right on that one." Rainbow nodded.

"Well, see you tomorrow Sans. I hope you have a good day," Rarity told him.

"Yeah, you too, bud. I'm only worried about how are you going to sleep tonight."

"Don't worry Sans. What I fear most is if we fail to save everyone. This is something we've never faced before," Rarity as she grabbed her backpack and Sans nodded. The other girls also grabbed their bags and readied themselves. Sans observed that the pink haired, energetic girl grew quiet the whole time. He was worried so he walked up to her, hoping she wasn't traumatized after the long talk.

"Hey, Pinkie. You all right? You seem to be quiet when we were talking," Sans asked. Pinkie nodded slowly and spoke.

"I'm...fine. I'm just don't know what to say about this. You must have been through a lot, huh?" the pink haired girl said softly.

"Yeah, I guess so. But don't let this whole what-if-we-fail-to-save-everyone ruin your day. The Pinkie I know is the most energetic girl I've seen in my whole life. She's always optimistic and she is also the friendliest," Sans gave her a reassuring smile as Pinkie slowly beamed a smile at the small skeleton, not forgetting who she is. This made Pinkie hug Sans tightly to thank him.

"Thanks Sansy. I'll try to not let it ruin my day. Besides, I have my friends beside me when the time comes, right?" Pinkie winked at him.

"That is very true, my friend," Sans chuckled. "...And you can stop hugging me now, You're killing my spine." Pinkie giggled at his joke and let her grip loosened.

"Oh, Sans. What would I do without you? I'm glad that you're here. You're the funniest guy I've met so far." Pinkie gave him a beamed smile as Sans grinned at her.

"Yeah. It's finally nice to have someone who has a sense of humor around here. They find my jokes 'humerus'." Man I gotta come up with more original content. Sans thought. As the other girls went out of the door, with leaving Pinkie, Sans and Fluttershy wearing her green boots near the door.

"Well, I better 'ketchup' with my friends. See 'ya tomorrow Sansy." Pinkie and Sans snickered. "Heh,heh. Good one." Sans replied. As Pinkie went outside, Fluttershy was the only one left inside with the small skeleton. As she finished wearing her boots, she turned to Sans who was 5 feet away from her. All Sans did was give her a big smile and nod. Fluttershy smiled too as she went outside without a word.

Sans was now left alone in his home, still on his feet. He remembered someone way back who was similar to Fluttershy.

"She's just like Tori. Who knew?" Sans smiled as he sat on the couch and using his psychokinesis, he grabbed a bottle of ketchup once more to ease himself. "I hope this friendship of yours work, girls. There's no guarantee that this'll actually work."

*OUTSIDE

The girls were standing outside of Sans' place waiting for Fluttershy and out she came.

"You okay, Flutters?" asked Rainbow as Fluttershy nodded.

"Well, that was an unpleasant experience. I hope to never see that again," Rarity shook her head.

"A-greed." Pinkie exclaimed.

"So, ah guess ah'll see you 'round. Ah'm going home and ah think you all need to," Applejack as she fixed her Stenson hat.

The girls separated, each going to their own homes, leaving only Sunset and Twilight outside.

"Hey, Twilight. Thanks for your help back there. I guess you really learned a lot from us, huh?", Sunset said as she nudged Twilight lightly.

"I learned from the best," Twilight smiled as Sunset touched the lavender girl's shoulder with a beaming smile.

"Well, I guess I better go. See you later, Sunset." Twilight told her.

"Oh yeah. I should too, Bye, Twilight," the two girls hugged each other and waved as Twilight set off. Sunset smiled at her from a distance and pondered of what happened earlier.

"Another saving-the-world stuff. Only this time, it's a demon child. Hmm...that works," Sunset thought as she proceeded to her place which was fairly close to Sans. An apartment she used to stay for a quite a while now. Considering that it was just a 15-minute walk from her place to CHS, she knew it was fairly easy to walk to Sans' place. Sunset walks off into the distance, back to her home as usual but she still had that eerie feeling of discomfort from hearing all that unpleasant news from their skeleton friend. Another threat to mankind to be dealt with. This time, only one will prevail.

*Meanwhile....

"How are we even going to find Sans? He could be anywhere," Frisk asked Chara as they finished the job with Asgore.

"That's the problem. We are not even sure where that comedian is," Chara and Frisk pondered at their predicament since everyone is now reduced to dust and they are the only ones left with no idea where Sans is...or are they? Chara remembered something and it formed a smile on her face.

"Any ideas, Chara?", asked Frisk. At this moment, Chara summoned an option which confused Frisk and frightened her because the option that was before her was:

"TRUE RESET"

"Chara, what are you doing?"

"What does it look like? Performing a True Reset. You have a problem with that?" Chara said in an irritated tone.

"No, not at all." Frisk held her hands up in defense and she knew what Chara was doing was a complete mistake. All of this progress wasted at last. She can finally undo the murders she had done with the help of her, but Chara still holds a menacing smile on her face. She had a plan which Frisk was unaware of because she was in possession. She will still be in control in the end, even if Frisk did the Pacifist Route. Chara will be awakened in the end whenever Frisk chooses to stay with Toriel and the others or she has places to go. No matter what choice, the demon child will still be the victor in the end of any route taken.

Before Chara was about to perform the action, she thought to herself while smiling:

"Don't worry about being in control again, kid. You paid the debt, remember?" Chara laughed maniacally as she did the action leaving Frisk terrified a bit. Before they knew, they were back from square one. Frisk found herself lying on golden buttercup flowers as she observed around here. No mistake, the action was really done. Chara really did it, but there is a backdoor to this as Frisk was blinded by it. Frisk can do things her way...for now.
