Chapter 17, Doubts and Confusion

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Life is complicated, they say. They're right, it really is. I was reminded that from the moment when Spike's eyes desperately landed on me. My concern for him caused me to briefly glance at him, only to receive his frightened stare. He's probably unable to think right now, given the circumstances, I would as well. In fact, I am already experiencing said terrifying moment. Only, I didn't realise until now that glancing at him was a bad move, for it caused the Shimmers to follow my gaze, and there, they saw Spike, huddled in the corner of the bed, desperately ducking so that his whole was pressed tightly against the cool floor. It was no use.

"Oh, whoever the f:ajunamused:ck you are... Oh wait, you're my baby's little brother, aren't you," Sunset smirked and started strutting towards him, Mr. Shimmer tensing as he watched his daughter, brows furrowed.

"No, don't hurt him," I cried desperately as I ignored the embarrassing nickname, only to be confronted by Mr. Shimmer himself.

"Don't worry, I won't let her. I was merely trying to intimidate you, but it seems that you all know each other, so I'm dropping this. But if you dare try to break into our house another time, you will never ever see daylight again,"- he narrowed his eyes at me-"is that clear, Ms. Sparkle?"

I gulped and nodded in fear and intimidation at his up-close build, and he averted his eyes to Sunset and my now quivering little brother, Spike.

"Drop the act, Shimmy. Let'em go."

"Urgh, paps, the nickname," Sunset snarled, and when I said snarled, I literally meant (i)snarled(/i), and it sent pleasant chills down my spine too, for some inexplicable reason, "and no way, I'm so not dropping this. I mean, come on! They snook up in our house for f-!"

"Language,"-shouted Mr. Shimmer,-" I'm your father and you will do as I say, you hear me?!"

For some reason, even I was forced to feel scared as well, as if the command was directed right at me. The mere volume of his voice was enough to make my ears ring, figuratively speaking still. His tone sent chills down my spine, and not the good kind.

It was like the chills you get when you're watching a horror film, but five times the fright, and coming from me, a highly intellectual student(not to brag) that does NOT believe in the supernatural, that's a very big deal.

My eyes met Spike's once again, which were wide in, what I'm guessing is, fear.

Sunset Shimmer just groaned and rolled her eyes, "you're no fun." She stepped away from Spike, who I saw breathed out a huge sigh of relief, but then he looked at Mr. Shimmer, and he was back to the quivering mess.

"Being a leader is no fun at all, my child, so don't be so surprised," a softness grazed his voice and expression, and it was then I felt slightly relaxed.

"Blah blah blah, you're no elder, paps, now get someone to kick'em outta here," Sunset mocked and jumped on her bed as if we're not in the room anymore, and kicked her boots off her, one of the pair missing me by a few inches.

Mr. Shimmer shook his head and looked at Spike and I both. "Now, what do you have to say for yourselves?"

I hung my head low, thus making my bangs block a couple of my vision, disabling my sight on Spike.

"We're sorry, sir..." I noticed a stare from across the room, and my eyes met with a pair of irritated teal ones. "... And Sunset," I added sheepishly, only then the irritation dispersed and was replaced by nonchalance.

"I will ask again, what drove you to break in our home?" Mr. Shimmer's gaze sent chills down my spine, and I felt a lump in my throat as I tried to get a hold of my voice. And the way he carried out the question didn't help, not. One. Bit.

"Uhm... You see... Well, you don't but-but we w-want you to... I-I mean, n-not that you're blind or anything, I wasn't implying that! It's just that... Well... We.. I..." I shut my eyes closed and balled my hands into fists, "reason or no reason, sir. What we've done was unacceptable."

There was a moment of silence, from the open window we can hear the crickets and other nocturnal wildlife out there... With aforementioned crickets standing out the most. You can only imagine the tension we all felt, all except Sunset it seemed.

"I will repeat the question, and you are to answer it directly. Why did you break in?" The question sounded more of a demand, delivered in a lower and eerier tone of voice, which made me gulp in fear and shake like a leaf caught in a breeze, grateful suddenly that my bangs were there to shield his impenetrable gaze.

"Paps, don't use the Alpha voice on her, look, you made my poor babe scared like a newborn pup," Sunset's voice chimed in and I could've sworn I heard a hint of concern laced within. It caused me to look at her out of the corner of my eye to find that she had flipped over so that she rested on her belly, with elbows supporting her torso to partially "stand."

Her sole gaze caused me to stop and look deeper, like my eyes can't get enough of what they were seeing. It was that at that moment that I realised my cheeks heated up a little, and that the familiar tingling sensation I get when we're around each other have returned.

"It proves no use apparently, she's still unresponsive."

The voice snapped me out of my trance and my eyes landed back on the man. He sighed and rubbed his templates.

"First the rogues, then the meeting, and now this," I heard him mutter underneath his breath.

Wait a second, my brain immediately went to Sherlock Holmes mode, of course, that trait of mine was inspired by several mystery novels that I have read. Speaking of which, have you seen the movie? What am I saying, Twilight, get back to the story! Rogues? What exactly does he mean by rogues? And what's with those stupid and flustering nicknames Sunset gives me? Wasn't the almost-rape incident enough for her?! Alpha voice, leader, mate, what does all these words mean?! And why do they some familiar to me?!

"Twilight," a voice sounded from somewhere, I paid no heed to it but then someone shook me gently, which caused me to wake up once more, finding a concerned face, an amused one, and a wierded out one.

"What," I blurted out without thinking, then looked down at Spike. "How did you get here? You were a couple of steps away!"

An awkward pause hung through the air, which was broken by Sunset's laughing. It was so intense that she doubled over and clutched her stomach, then wheezed out, "get out of our house, Ms. Space-Out-A-Lot!"

I immediately blushed and hid in my bangs.

"Did I really spaced out," I whispered to Spike.

He was about to answer, but then Mr. Shimmer cleared his throat abruptly, which made us both look at him questioningly.

"Well, since you are done sneaking around, as I was saying, I will set you free. But heed my warning, Mr. and Ms. Sparkle, if I catch you in my abode again, I will have no choice. Did I make myself clear?"

"Yes, sir," Spike and I muttered in defeat.

"Good. Now, off you go. Mr. Pepper will escort you lady, and gentleman, out," he said formally and nodded to said butler, that I didn't notice had already slipped in the room and was awaiting Spike and I expectantly.

We complied with no argument of course and followed Mr. Pepper down the halls, his face lighting up in recognition upon closer inspection.

"Ms. Sparkle? Didn't expect to see you so soon," he said once we were out of the room, "what brings you here?" I dropped the use of formality as just being friendly, but I made a mental note to remind him of the usage of "Ms. Sparkle." Then, realizing someone was with me, he gave an acknowledging nod toward Spike, "and this humble gentleman here?"

"It's not a very pleasant one on your part," I said and looked at the floor, watching as my right foot flew back while the left one slung forward, then reverse, then reverse again.

"Oh? May I ask why?"

"It's... A long story," I cast my gaze to Spike to see how he was doing, but then he went from paranoid to casual.

"Long story is an understatement," he sighed.

"Well, then I'll leave the information to you, but everyone in this house will certainly be informed about this... Dare I say, intrusion, according to some maidens and other pack mem... I-I mean, relatives," he cleared his throat and looked ahead, concentrating on getting us to the elevator.

It was too late to correct his last lines, and he knew it too, if only I knew what he was about to say. Pack mem-something. Now, think, Twilight, think. You've read every possible books out there, which of those books that contains a word "pack mem-?" Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock...

"It was weird back there, you know, Pinkie Pie," Spike snapped me out of my thoughts once again and scratched his knuckles habitually. "I really thought she'd stick around more, you know."

That, was another problem I had yet to organize. Why did she run away? If someone told me that Pinkie can abandon people at dire situations, I would've laughed. But then, here we were, abandoned by none other than the jolly party girl.

"Quite, Spike. Quite," I said thoughtfully and just left the phrase hanging, still thinking of possible reasons as to how Pinkie could just run off from us like that.
