Chapter 2 Back to reality

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

I raised my head from my extremely uncomfortable slab I was laying on to get a better look at the room I awoke in. An
assortment of concrete and iron bars was the scenery I was met with. The cold iron bars at the front of my cell, the even
less encouraging iron bars on the only one window I had to the outside world, along with the graffiti riddled walls of slurs and maddening proverbs, was reassuring that I had snapped back to what I knew to be reality. With the familiar setting aside, I had to reassure myself that I was human and not some pastel colored equine. I rose from my uncomfortable resting place to proceed to the mirror in what I called the bathroom area. My image was received by the walled, reflective surface and displayed the man I’ve known my entire life, myself. “ Young and beautiful as the day you were born.” I shared a chuckle with myself at the shear absurdity.

My mind began to trail on the previous night. “ That’s the third time this month that I’ve had a dream like that, odd thing is that it was in sync with each previous dreams. First I arrive into some foreign land of magical talking ponies, I mindlessly walk through a dark forest filled with creatures I’ve never seen in my life, once I even exit the labyrinth of a forest I come in contact with some pink, hyper, pony with cotton candy hair claiming to be my best friend when I’ve never seen her in my entire life. After that I found my way to a little brick house that seem awfully familiar to the house that I lived in as a child. Turning my head aside I saw on the little mailbox that my full name was printed on the side, Samuel L. Nash. Since for all I knew it was my house, I decided to enter the household to see how I lived in this world. The house was small yet had a comforting, familiar aura to it. The living room was fit with a small plush rug with a green texture. The walls were painted an eggshell white with a smooth pattern of brush strokes. There was a tan couch with decorative pillows that look to be comfortable if you laid on them, along with a brown leather chair sitting in front of the old time television. Along with this furniture was a brick fireplace with an accessible bookshelf filled with a variety of books I’ve all read before. Being as tired as I was at the time I decided to take a seat in the leather chair and drift off to sleep. That was the end of the first dream.

In the next dream a cyan colored Pegasus by the name of Rainbow Dash awakened me from the chair claiming that I was late for work. After a bit of talking I initially decided to take her word to heart and go see where I worked. I remember a conversation that took place while we flew to the place she was taking me.

“ Darn it Nash, you’re supposed to be the one that’s supposed to be supervising me, but it seems that I’m the one who has to remind you to do your job.” Said Dash as she rolled her eyes.

“ Hey get off my back will you, it was a long night last night and I forgot to set my alarm.” She smirked at my rebuttal

“Well I hope your not too tired to move the clouds, because it’s supposed to rain by this afternoon, and as I am fully capable of doing this myself I have to string you along so I don’t get fired.” She began to fly faster at this statement.

“ So try to keep up or you will fall behind.”

I began to speed up with my best efforts, as I did this I thought to myself,

“ If she was so capable I wouldn’t be here.”

I eventually caught up to her and we began to talk while we were speeding.

“Wow, out of all the stiffs I’ve had to work with, you’re the first one to actually be able to keep up with me.”

I was even marveled by the speed I was going; even though from all I knew it was a dream.

“ But don’t get too cocky with yourself, just because you can keep up with me, doesn’t mean you’re faster than me.”

She then proceeded to speed up, leaving me in the clouds. Taking this as a challenge I flapped what I knew to be wings and flew faster then I ever thought I would ever go. In no time at all, I finally caught up to Rainbow.

“Ohh so it is a race you want Nash? Ok first one to the Weather Depot wins.”

Her speed suddenly increased to were it was just a blur and she left a rainbow trail. “ So that’s why they call her Rainbow Dash.” With my determined nature, I refused to be beaten by this Pegasus. So I started to strain myself to follow the rainbow trail that followed Dash where ether she went. I flew so fast that the moisture in the clouds started to hold me back as I sped, so I changed the tactics to avoiding the clouds and following hot on Rainbow’s trail. At last I finally saw the Weather Depot, but also did Dash. She turned her head to meet my gaze for I was flying right next to her.

“ I never took you as a flyer, but nether the less I’m not going to just let you win.”

She tried her best to speed up but to no avail, I didn’t allow her to get past me. It was the final stretch; the Weather Depot was just meters away from us, neither of us were allowing an inch to be given to our opponent. Closer and closer we got, it is undetermined who will win this great race, and I could taste victory on my lips. Finally we made it to the cloud that housed the Weather Depot, I forced my hoofs into the cloud to gain some leverage to help in my initial stop. Rainbow however was so stunned by the results of the race that she forgot to try to stop and smacked right into the side of the building. She just got up like it was nothing to her and trotted over to me.

“ Looks like we tied Dash.”

“Yeah… I guess we did.”

“Guess I’m not as big of a stiff as you say I am.”

“ Th..that was a fluke, I… I want a rematch after work. We’ll meet in the Everfree forest after work and settle this for real.”
I noticed that her voice started to get a bit hoarse, so all I could say was,

“ Ok Dash after we work, we’ll go to the Everfree forest and race, If I win you have to promise to handle the next big rainstorm we have, and if you win I’ll take over for the next storm while you can nap. How does that sound?”

“ Sounds good, but don’t think I’ll go easy on you next time, I’m gonna bring my A-Game.”

“Ok, enthusiasm is always enjoyed, but lets get to work before we both get fired.”

We then proceeded inside the building. We we’re met with an assortment of clouds from different sizes and shades of grey in little glass jars. Dash lead me into a separate room where I was met with a long hall, I continued down it and Rainbow followed close behind. We entered a large room filled with three other pairs of mares waiting for their designated weather instructor. Finally an orange colored colt with a rustled, green mane and started to make his great speech to the rest of us.

“ All right fillies and gentle colt. I hope you all got a decent nights rest, cause I’ve got word from the big men that we’re gonna have some crazy weather today, all around Equestria. First things first, Crunch and Sting, you need to make it hail in Manehattan …”

He went down the checklist he inexplicably held in his hoof, and then came to Dash and I.
“ And lastly, Nash and Dash, you are scheduled to bring the thunder down to Ponyville. Now, you all have your assignments, so grab your jars and get to work.”

At this, everyone left the room in an orderly fashion. We went back to the main room we entered from to get our designated jar. It didn’t take long before we finally found the jar labeled “Slight Drizzle, With The Roar of Thunder.”

“ If we’re going to cover the span of Ponyville, we will need three jars.”
So I grabbed three of the jars, still pondering how in the blue Hell I was holding them. We exited the Weather Depot and made our way to the outskirts of Ponyville. The entire way I was still thinking about my upcoming race and how I was going to win.

Finally we made it to the edge of Ponyville, border lining the Everfree forest. Dash told me to open the jars and begin setting the clouds over the town. When I opened one of the jars, three big, slightly grey clouds filled the sky. In order for us to move the clouds and move on, we needed to both push the clouds to their respected place so that they fit like puzzle pieces. After about an hour of backbreaking labor we made our way to the forest to have our race.

We arrived at a cottage at the edge of the forest.

“ This is my friend Fluttershy’s house. This is where I’m going to be waiting for you for an hour, while you’re still chasing me through the forest.”

“ Just don’t get all sour on me when I beat you again.”

“ That was just beginners luck, I won’t go so easy on you this time.”

"Enough small talk, let me give you the rundown on how this is gonna play out. First, we’re going out about one hundred meters or so into the forest. Next, I will start the race on a count to three, and while your flying around aimlessly through the forest, I will be making my way effortlessly to the finish. You got all of that?”

“ Yeah… let’s do this.”

We made our way throughout the forest until we came to a small clearing.

“ Alright Nash you ready?”

“Yep.”

“Ok… three… two… one… GO!”

At the drop of the horn, we were off like two bullets shot in unison. The air was cold and damp as it flowed through my mane. I put all my power into my wings to go at top speed to keep up with my adversary. Then the thick brush of the forest began to oppose me, I felt I spent most of my energy dodging trees rather than racing. Rainbow however was swerving around them like it was nothing. Now was the time to step up my game, I started moving around the forest like it was a path I have run my entire life. I could feel the adrenaline flow through my veins as I went at top speeds through the foliage, when all of a sudden…

BOOM!!!

A bolt of lightning shot right at me, nearly missing me and hitting a tree. That was all it took for me to take me out of my funk and steer of course. Then I broke the number one rule to keep in mind while driving or speeding, I took my eyes off the road.

Then… WHAM!!

I crashed square into a tree, being knocked out instantly. And that was the end of my second dream.

You know… with the weirdness aside… this is still a hell of a lot more entertaining that what I’ve been doing recently.”
