Chapter 23: The Price of Survival

Earth – Arriving in Savannah

The RV rumbled into Savannah, Georgia, its reinforced exterior caked in dirt, ash, and blood. The city stretched ahead—abandoned, its streets filled with the remains of a world long lost.

Their plan was simple: gun it for Orlando, Florida.

One last push south before reaching the military base where they could steal a cargo plane and get the hell out.

But first—they needed supplies.

And that’s when everything went wrong.

Lady Gray’s Final Stand

The gang had barely started scavenging the city when they ran into them.

A group of twenty or so armed bandits—filthy, desperate, and ruthless.

Sam knew the look in their eyes.

These weren’t survivors.

They were predators.

And they had already chosen their first victim.

From across the street, they saw Lady Gray dragged out of a building, her blind eyes unblinking, her face calm even as they surrounded her.

Fido snarled at her side, but the bandits held him back with chains.

One of them—a tall man with a jagged scar across his cheek—grinned as he pointed a revolver at her head.

“Old lady,” he sneered. “You walked into the wrong city.”

Sam raised his rifle. “We have to move. Now.”

A Battle of Blood and Revenge

It all happened too fast.

By the time they closed the distance, the gunshot rang out—

Lady Gray crumpled to the ground, lifeless.

Fido howled in rage, breaking free, lunging at the bandit leader—

Only to be shot down instantly.

Dan’s heart stopped.

“NO—”

But his rage overtook his grief.

Without thinking, he opened fire, the rest of the gang following instantly.

Bullets tore through the bandits, ripping into them with furious precision.

Dan charged forward, screaming, his shotgun blasting apart the bastards who had killed her.

Sam moved like a ghost, silent, efficient, each shot dropping another target.

Pops fired his grenade launcher—sending two bandits flying into a burning wreck.

Starlight and Trixie unleashed their magic, shattering bones and crushing skulls with sheer force.

By the time the dust settled, every last bandit was dead.

But the victory meant nothing.

Because Lady Gray… was gone.

The Burial

They found a quiet spot[near an old church, where the moss-covered gravestones whispered of past lives.

They dug two graves.

One for Lady Gray.

One for Fido.

Dan was silent as they lowered her into the earth.

As Pops finished patting the last bit of dirt over her grave, Dan finally broke.

He dropped to his knees, hands gripping his hair, his body shaking.

Then, for the first time since the world ended—

He cried.

Not just a few tears.

A full-on emotional meltdown.

Trixie, shocked, hesitated—then slowly moved to him, wrapping her hooves around him.

Dan didn’t resist.

He just buried his face into her fur, sobbing.

“She reminded me of my grandma…” he choked out. “She—she was the only person who ever—”

His voice broke completely.

Trixie, holding him close, murmured, “I know, Dan… I know.”

No teasing. No sarcasm.

Just comfort.

Starlight wiped her own tears, resting her head against Sam’s shoulder.

Even Pops, normally unshakable, looked away, swallowing hard.

The world had taken another good soul from them.

And there was nothing they could do about it.

Preparing for Jacksonville

After the burial, they restocked what they could—but the energy in the group was different now.

Darker.

Colder.

Dan hadn’t spoken since the burial. He just sat in the RV’s backseat, staring at the floor.

Pops took the wheel, muttering, “We ain’t stoppin’ till Jacksonville.”

As they drove, Sam silently handed Lady Gray’s last can of dog foodto Dan, who barely reacted.

Dan just looked at it.

Then—without a word—he set it aside.

Pops, chewing on his own can of dog food, sighed.

“This world don’t let us keep nothin’ good.”

Sam nodded slowly.

“No,” he murmured. “It doesn’t.”

The RV pushed forward, Savannah fading behind them.

And Florida loomed ahead.

Whatever was waiting for them in Jacksonville…

It wasn’t going to be good.

But at this point?

Nothing was.

Meanwhile, in Equestria

The enchanted mirror flickered, showing Lady Gray’s grave.

Twilight, stunned, whispered, “She’s… she’s gone.”

Fluttershy wiped her eyes. “They tried so hard to save her…”

Rarity sniffled. “And that poor dog…”

Applejack sighed. “That was murder.”

Rainbow Dash clenched her jaw. “And the bastards paid for it.”

Celestia, silent, watched Dan break down in Trixie’s embrace.

She whispered, “They are losing too much.”

Pinkie Pie’s mane was flat, her voice small. “I don’t want them to hurt anymore…”

The mirror flickered, showing the RV rolling south.

Twilight exhaled.

“We have to find a way to bring them home.”

The journey wasn’t over.

And the pain wasn’t done.
