Earth – The Long Road to Jacksonville
The RV rumbled down the desolate highway, but inside, the atmosphere was far from normal.
Dan sat in the back corner, his helmet discarded, his eyes hollow, staring at nothing.
He hadn’t spoken in hours.
Not since Lady Gray’s murder.
Not since he had broken down in Trixie’s embrace.
His body was there, but his spirit?
It was somewhere else entirely.
Trixie, sitting beside him, watched him with concern. His usual cocky grin? Gone.
His snarky remarks? Silence.
Instead, his hands trembled.
Every so often, a tear slipped down his cheek, but he never wiped them away.
Trixie hesitated—then, slowly, she leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder.
Dan didn’t react.
But he didn’t pull away either.
Dan’s Silence
The rest of the gang noticed.
Sam, driving now while Pops rested, glanced in the rearview mirror.
“Is he still not talking?” he murmured.
Pops, leaning forward in the passenger seat, sighed. “Boy’s hurtin’. Bad.”
Starlight, sitting at the table, frowned. “We all are.”
Sam exhaled, gripping the wheel tighter. “Yeah. But Dan? He’s breaking.”
And they all knew it.
Trixie, hearing their whispers, gently took Dan’s hand.
“…Dan?” she whispered.
Nothing.
She squeezed it.
Still nothing.
Finally, she leaned up and whispered into his ear.
“I’m not leaving you behind.”
Something in Dan twitched.
His breath hitched.
His fingers curled around hers.
He was still in there.
But he was barely holding on.
Jacksonville – A City of Fire
By the time they reached Jacksonville, the sun was setting behind the ruined skyline.
Sam pulled the RV into an abandoned gas station, scanning for threats.
“We need fuel,” he said. “Pops, Starlight, Trixie—you’re with me.”
Dan remained silent.
Sam glanced at him. “Dan—”
Dan stood suddenly, grabbing his flamethrower.
Sam raised an eyebrow. “Where the hell are you going?”
Dan adjusted his gloves, eyes dark.
“Teaching the infected a lesson.”
Then he stepped out, walking into the city alone.
Trixie’s heart clenched.
Wrath of a Broken Man
The first infected that saw Dan lurched toward him, its grotesque body jerking with hunger.
Dan barely reacted—he just pulled the trigger.
*FWOOSH!*
Flames engulfed the creature, its shrieks echoing through the streets.
More infected crawled out of the shadows—but Dan didn’t run.
He marched forward, burning everything in his path.
His vision blurred, his mind flashing back—
His fiancée’s scream.
Her eyes filled with terror as the infected tore her away from him.
Her blood on his hands.
Dan clenched his teeth.
He could still hear her voice.
But as the flames roared, all that mattered was the rage in his heart.
“I may have lost my fiancée to you infected freaks…”
He lit another street ablaze, watching the monsters burn alive.
“…but none of you will hurt my Trixie!”
A horde came rushing at him—he grabbed his combat knife and met them head-on.
Slashing. Burning. Destroying.
“I’LL DROP DEAD BEFORE YOU EVEN LAY A SINGLE INFECTED HAND ON HER!”
The Others React
Sam, refueling the RV, saw the firestorm erupting.
“…Oh hell.”
Pops sighed. “Boy’s gone full warpath.”
Starlight gasped. “We have to stop him!”
Trixie, standing frozen, shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone turned to her.
She clenched her hooves, staring at the inferno.
“Not yet.”
Sam exhaled. “…Alright. But if he doesn’t come back soon—”
Dan emerged from the flames, panting, covered in blood, his armor scorched, his eyes cold.
Trixie ran to him, grabbing his arm.
“Dan! Enough!”
Dan’s breath hitched.
He turned, looking at her.
Trixie’s eyes were full of emotion.
“We need you.”
Dan trembled.
Then—he dropped his knife.
Trixie pulled him into a hug.
Dan finally broke.
“…I don’t want to lose anyone else…”
Trixie held him tighter.
“You won’t,” she whispered.
Behind them, half of Jacksonville burned.
But Dan?
Dan had finally come back to them.
And he wasn’t letting go again.
Aftermath – Preparing for Orlando
The gang finished topping off the fuel, packing every last bullet and ration they could find.
Dan sat in the RV’s backseat, silent—but his eyes were clearer now.
Trixie sat beside him, not saying a word—just holding his hand.
Sam sighed, rubbing his face.
“Next stop—Orlando.”
Pops, eating another can of dog food, grinned.
“Hope Disney’s still open.”
Starlight groaned. “Pops—”
Pops chuckled. “Kidding. Kinda.”
Sam shook his head, looking at Dan.
“You good?”
Dan, gripping Trixie’s hoof, nodded slowly.
“…I will be.”
The RV roared to life, leaving Jacksonville’s burning skyline behind.
Florida awaited.
And the final battle was approaching.
Meanwhile, in Equestria…
The enchanted mirror shimmered, revealing Dan’s rampage to the ponies watching.
Rainbow Dash’s jaw dropped. “Dude… he burned half the city.”
Applejack adjusted her hat. “Boy’s got some serious pain.”
Fluttershy wiped a tear. “I just… I just want them all to be safe…”
Rarity sniffled. “Trixie… she really cares for him.”
Twilight, writing furiously, muttered, “This is… this is more than survival.”
Celestia, watching Dan collapse into Trixie’s embrace, whispered—
“They are fighting for more than just life.”
Pinkie Pie, her mane flat, whispered,
“They’re fighting for each other.”
The mirror flickered—showing the RV heading south.
Toward Orlando.
And toward the final battle for their future.
To Be Continued…
