The Human's Backpack

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Pinkie had sprung right into action getting food, music, and decorations for the party. Logan tried to convince Pinkie that there was no need for a party, and it would be better not to have a party to keep a low profile. Logan's attempts were all in vain; the pink, puffy maned mare was determined to throw a party. Though Logan agreed that a human coming to Equestria that didn't intend to take over was big, but he didn't think other ponies would be ready to see a human based on the reactions of the ponies that saw him.

It had been only two hours since Logan was freed from stone. Luna had put the palace staff to work, they had already patched up his backpack but his clothes were to be thrown away once new clothes were given to him. Logan stayed in Luna's room, but he only looked out over the balcony. Luna tried to snap him out of his trance any way she could, she waved a hoof in front of his face, she tried playing Battlepony 3, she tried telling him jokes, she even tried to squeeze him in a bear hug, but nothing could get Logan out of his trance. Luna was starting to get angry.

"Helloooooo," Luna said, "Is Logan in there? I'd like to know what's made him so boring."

"Your assumptions based on visuals are incorrect, indicating there is more that could be gained and/or verified from facial expressions and body posture."

"Stop talking with big smart words," Luna giggled, "So what's going on inside that noggin of yours?"

"Multiple thought processes," Logan replied.

"Well let's go through them one at a time," Luna said.

"The first is about Chrysalis and the invassion. The who thing seems... off. Her 'soldiers' were way too easy to kill; if Chrysalis tried invading Canterlot before, she wouldn't risk making the same mistakes."

"I don't see where you're going with this," Luna said

"What I'm saying is that Chrysalis is no idiot. She wouldn't have rushed the invassion plan and made the same mistakes, she would have made sure the plan was well constructed. Problem is, Chrysalis's 'soldiers' seemed unprepared and just ruthless. Which means those 'soldiers' were probably mercenaries of her domain. Chrysalis knew they would die, but they would take out a bit of the guard. Her real soldiers were probably standing by, waiting for an order from Chrysalis to move into the city. But because she was preoccupied with attacking me, but the order never came. The theory would explain why the changelings seemed unprepared and why there were so few of them."

An expression of horror dawned on Luna's face as she realized what Logan was saying, "You mean..."

"There could be an entire army of changelings right under our noses. The good news is that without Chrysalis to lead them the changelings will cripple. So the changeling army will either break apart and go home or randomly attack in small groups or as individuals"

"Useless attempts," Luna said and sigh with relief.

"The other thing on my mind is something you might not understand," Logan said.

"Tell me anyways," Luna said, "I might understand."

"Well... it's about how ponies see me..." Logan began but Luna stopped him.

"You're sad because you feel you're respected because ponies fear you," Luna said with a pained look.

"Nailed it," Logan said quietly as he looked out into the sky.

"I get it," Luna said, "I had the same problem, but it will work itself out."

"Not for me," Logan said, "You're a Princess and you had a strong testimony from your sister and the six elements all who ponies trusted. As for me, I only have you. I can sense the six element bearers are still wary."

"There is more isn't there," Luna said.

"Something bad is going to happen, I just don't know what and when, all I know is that it's bad," Logan said.

"How can you tell?" Luna asked.

"I can just feel it in my bones," Logan replied.

"Do all humans have that?" Luna asked.

"It's a figure of speech,"Logan said.

"How do you put a finger in your speech?" Luna asked.

"Not finger, figure," Logan corrected.

"So this figure of peach..." Luna began, but stopped when Logan gave her a tired look, "I'm just pushing your buttons, I know what a figure of speech is. So you feel that something bad is going to happen, is it something like a Pinkie sense."

"Yeah... I guess you could say that," Logan said, "It's a bad feeling."

Luna wrapped her forehooves around him laying her he on his shoulder. She let go of Logan when they heard the door open. Logan didn't bother to look, he was still thinking about what bad things could possibly happen.

"Human," said a pony who was clearly Celestia, "I demand to know what is-"

"I have a name you know," Logan said, "You wouldn't want me to call you pony,"

"Or Sun Butt," Luna giggled.

"Shut it Moon Fart," Celestia grumbled.

"Somepony woke up on the wrong side of the bar," Logan said with a hint of mockery, "Now what do you want?"

"I want to know what's in your saddlebag," Celestia said.

"Backpack," Logan corrected her.

"Whatever, what's in it?" Celestia asked. Logan turned slowly around and slowly began to walk over to his backpack. When he got to it, he looked at Celestia seriously for a moment before he spoke.

"Stuff," Logan said in a monotone. He began to walk away but Celestia stopped him with a hoof.

"Just show me what is inside," Celestia groaned impatiently.

"Why you can't open it yourself?" Logan snickered. Celestia groaned loudly in frustration. "Fine I'll show you," Logan began to unzip the first main pocket while he added, "Princess Whiney Pants,"

Logan pulled out the textbooks naming each subject. Celestia didn't see the cover before she began to speak, "Are these books on battle tactics?!" She burst.

"No, they're books on what is said they are on; Trigonometry, Economics, Government, World History, German, and Chemistry."

"Why do you keep so many books in your backpack?" Luna asked.

"Because, the school year was starting in a few weeks when I got here," Logan said, "So I just packed all my textbooks in my backpack."

"Is that it?" Celestia asked a little disappointed.

"No, I've got pens, pencils, and a calculator with drawings of weird skulls on the cover because I wasn't going to buy a pink cover. There are a few other things in that are in there either because I kept forgetting or I was too lazy to put it in my binder."

"What's this," Celestia levitated a small object, the same shade of blue as Luna's coat, out of his bag; it was slightly thinner than the textbooks and was slightly smaller than a piece of paper.

"That is my laptop," Logan said as he picked it out of Celestia's golden aurora and set it on Luna's bed.

"What's a laptop do?" Celestia asked.

"Really Tia?!" Luna said in disbelief, "My language may have been outdated when I came back, but I had a reason. You need to learn more about technology, stone age sister."

"On a laptop you can do things like make a word document, or a presentation, or a graph." Logan said, "The best part is the Internet. With it, you can connect to people, or ponies, from around the globe; make webpages; create games; and feul imagination."

"That's too much to take in," groaned Celestia.

"While you wrap your brain around that," Luna said, "I have some things to discuss with Logan." Celestia left the room her head down in thought. Luna tugged on Logan's hand indicating for him to follow her as she too walked out the door. Logan followed her down a few hallways and stairs before they arived outside in a fairly large area where guards were trained, though they weren't currently.

"Let me guess," Logan said, "You think I'm a terrible fighter."

"No," Luna said, "In every fight you have been at a disadvantage, so you need to gain an advantage."

"So you're saying I need to improve my skills?" Logan's question was answered with a nod from Luna.

"One major problem is that you can't fly," Luna said, "But from what I have heard you can use electricity as thrusters of some sort. If you can get more thrust you could jump a little higher."

"Or fly?" Logan asked hopefully.

"No," Luna said, "But you have enough thrust to get you further off the ground."

Logan snapped, "Watch me learn, adapted, and fly!"

"Sure," Luna scoffed, "Give up."

Logan stopped dead, "What did you just say?"

"I said give up," Luna repeated.

"Is that how you lost?" Logan asked, "Is that why Chrysalis beat you?"

"No! I ran out of energy, I had nothing left to use. I didn't give up!"

"Then why are you telling me to give up?!" Logan shouted.

"Beacuse that was possible, you flying is not possible!" Luna pushed.

"Something becomes impossible when you stop trying," Logan said.

Luna opened her mouth to counter but found she could not think of one.

"By the way," Logan said, "This is going to be like a dangerous science experiment without a procedure, so you should probably stand back." Luna could agree more and she scurried back ten feet away from Logan.

Logan slowly brought electricity to his hands, he didn't let any escape but instead just let the electricity spark on his hands. As more and more came his hands seemed to become electric spheres that got brighter and brighter. Guards came to the training grounds to see what was going on. Logan was suprised at how much electricity he contained, he could feel that he had only brought one pocket of electric into his hand and it was already as bright as a miniature sun. With the electricty so bright Logan thought that he would get almost fifty feet of air.

The next thing he could have done quickly, but for the sake of data did it slowly. Logan began to condense the electricity into a single point in the palm of his hand, the more condensed it was the more pressure there would be. It got to about the size of tennis ball until he could condense it no more, now it only as bright as a glowstick. He looked around first to Luna then to the guards at the door, many of whom were now laughing at the size of small size of the electricity. He looked back at Luna who was now retreating to twenty feet. The next part had to be done quickly if he wanted to get any air. Logan crouched low and jumped up as he let out the electricity in one big burst aimed down at the ground.

Logan didn't know what happened or how long it had taken until he could feel his face again. It felt cold and his eyes were watering a bit, he was looking at the sky so he knew he was going up. Then Logan looked down which he immediately regretted doing. He didn't know how high up he was, all he noticed was that ponies became ants then became too small to see. I definately learned to ration my electricity, Logan thought to himself.

As he slowed down Logan realized something, "Oh shit! I forgot to plan the goddamn landing!" he shouted as the decent began. He wanted to kill himself for forgeting to plan the landing, but he realized to the ground would do that for him if a plan wasn't completed before impact. Logan put his anger aside and tried to come up with a plan, but he couldn't. The best he could think of was bending his knees, but with a drop like this he would be flater than a pancake. What he needed was a cushion, but something that wasn't going to shoot him back up. No, no he couldn't use a cushion, it wouldn't stop him in time or slow him down enough. All he could do was brace for impact... brace...

Back on the ground Luna used her wings to shield herself from the dust that kicked up when Logan released the electricity. She looked back up to see Logan flying up higher and highet, getting smaller and smaller untill she couldn't see him. She searched the night sky for him to come back down but she couldn't find him, then she faintly heard him yell, "Oh shit. I forgot to plan the goddamn landing." The guards heard it as well and some began to fly up to get Logan.

"No," Luna said, the guards stopped.

"But your Majesty-" one guard began. Logan came back into view, and he was approching the ground quickly.

"If he is to learn, he must be forced to make quick decision." Luna said, "I will know if something has or will go horribly wrong," Luna watched as Logan neared the ground, time seemed to slow down as Logan got within a few hundred feet. Luna could see Logan, he was falling nearly at a belly flop but his head was just ahead, his body aimed down at a twenty-five degree angle, arms limp at his sides. His face showed no emotion, and stayed expressionless even as he neared the ground. In the last hundred feet time began to speed up until it was normal and the blur that was Logan hit the ground at terminal velocity, one hundred twenty four miles per hour.
