The Electric Defender
Darkness, Regret, and Guilt
Previous ChapterNext ChapterLogan opened his eyes. He wasn't sure if he had been out for long, or out at all. He could have been poorly teleported. He was lying on his back, but what was under his back was nothing but blackness. To his left was darkness, to his right was pitch black. Strangely though he could still see himself perfectly, it was like someone photo shopped him onto a black background. He leaned up a bit on his elbows looking around, but all he saw was black, black, and more black. The darkness just went on and on, in every direction. Up, down, left, right, in front, behind, and every in between, the darkness conquered it all.
Logan got to his feet and looked around some more, but there was no change, darkness still ruled the air. He took a step foreward, carefully placing his foot down as to make sure that the blackness did not suddenly drop off. He repeated the process again for a few more step; to an onlooker he would look like some crazy, not trusting the ground he was standing on. Slowly tiptoeing foreward, like a child sneaking downstairs for a midnight snack. At this rate the Mars Rover will catch me in no time! Logan thought sarcastically. He was sure he could save himself from a fall if one of his steps did go awry. He sped up to very slow steps, still taking in his surroundings, looking for something different.
"This place is blacker than Helen Keller's world." Logan said a bit of worry working its way into his brain. He speed his pace to a slow walk, still hoping to find change in the seemingly endless void. Where the hell am I?! Logan wondered, What kind of place goes on forever in complete black? No place as far as he knew of. He remembered everything before he opened his eyes to darkness. Changelings brought back asshole who went and tried to take over last time. Changelings fly off in a "life transfer". Changelings change into a green tornado. It was tornado, he didn't know what it did, but it was the tornado.
Was he lost? Just walking in a place so dark that he couldn't see the actual features of the landscape around him? His pace sped to a normal walk. No the ground outside is never this flat, and if he was outside there would be vegetation to make a shuffling sound and on dirt, a scraping sound. Night time was the logical option for time of day, but the moon wasn't visible nor were the stars. Of course, he could be inside, artificial floors would explain the flatness. Being inside would also explain why the sun, moon, and stars weren't visible.
As far as he knew he could be walking in circles, or he really was in a big room. A cave wasn't a possibility, there wasn't a single air current or breeze to be felt. With the results he was getting it he could be anywhere. Logan's pace quickened to a fast walk. If he kept walking he would eventually hit a wall or obstacal this couldn't go on forever.
What if he was trapped in here forever?! Dying a slow painful death! Logan's pace quickened to a jog.
What if I'm already dead?! Logan thought dreadfully, Doomed to walk in this darkness for eternity! Eternity and forever, the two things that a brain can't comprehend.
Logan broke into a full sprint, "I can't be dead!" he panted, "It can't end like this! Damned to be alone in this darkness forever! I've got to find something, someone, anything! I won't spend the rest eternity like this!" Logan collapsed onto the ground gasping for air. It was hopeless, he was stuck here. Forsaken to spend the rest of his days in an endless darkness.
"I wish somepony would have heard the truth," Logan panted, "Though this entire thing still could have been unvoidable."
Logan rested on his knees, his head bent over touching the ground and his arms on the sides of his head. For to first time in years he wept. What's done is done, Logan reminded himself, Crying won't fix anything. Nopony could stop that shot, at least I know it wasn't their fault I'm stuck here.

Luna choked on the lump forming again in her throat. Tears welled up in her eyes and she silently let them stream down her face and onto the stone of her balcony, which soaked them up quickly. It all happened so fast, the changelings raise the dead, then Logan was gone in a green swirl. The changeling general flew off with a spare block of changelings, most likely in the direction of the hive.
Celestia wrapped her sister in her wing, but kept quiet. Luna looked at Celestia and smiled at the blurry version of her sister. "He's in a better place now," Luna said.
"Yes, and if you need to talk to me about this, I'm here for you." Celestia replied.
"Do you think it hurt?" Luna asked
"Only for a second," Celestia reassured her, "Then the pain would be all gone."
Luna sniffled, "You know, years go by and this is still the hardest part of the job: watching others go."
"I know, I know" Celestia said, "But that's something both of us can't change."
"What do you think his afterlife is like?"
"What do you mean?"
"Where was he told he would go when he died?"
"Probably some sort of paradise."
"I hope so, he deserved it." There was a long silence before Celestia spoke again.
"I'll be in my room, don't hesitate to come to me if you need anything." Celestia slowly, with a smile, walked out of the room. Once she was out of sight she let out a deep breath and dropped the smile. "Sometimes, keeping this smile in grief is the hardest part." She said aloud.
"That's why you don't have to keep it around a few others." Hammer said. Celestia held her breath in embarrassment, she could clear her sister's ears, but not the guards'.
"I understand that she is at a loss, but you should have helped her move on by now." Anvil said.
"You are correct," Celestia agreed, "The problem is I haven't got over his death."
"With all respect, Princess, you and Logan weren't good... or even okay friends." Hammer said.
"It's not his absence that I trouble over," Celestia corrected, "I fight myself on the inside because of his death."
"I don't think I understand, Princess." Hammer said, Anvil nodded in agreement.
"You wouldn't, it's complicated," the solar princess replied as she walked off towards her room. She knew the only one who would understand was herself. As she walked down to her room the guards had the same look on their face as they always did. They all looked a little angry or serious, but mostly they had a blank expression. However, when Celestia looked at them, the anger and seriousness turned to anger and accusation. Guards straight forward down a hall while others in the middle of the halls scanned left and right.
As a guard, it was their job to check over anypony that went past. Just a quick glance and double check, then all would be well. But as some of the guards looked at her, the anger and accusation seemed to come out. Those stationed to look forward only seemed to be watching her, ready and wait if she decided to try to bolt. Shining Armor was walking down the opposite way, Celestia spoke up to take her mind off the stares.
"Captain Armor, how are the guards? Have any not been taking duties seriously?"
"All are in tip-top shape your majesty." Shining replied, "All the guards are doing just fine. How's your job going today?"
Celestia inwardly winced at the question. "Just... fine. Keep up the good work." she said quietly as she continued her walk. She looked at guards she passed who all just gave her the same angry look. She just couldn't shake the feeling that they were angry towards her. Finaly she couldn't take, "Don't any of you guards ever smile!" The guards didn't respond, and they still looked angry. "Uhhhhhgggg!" Celestia groaned loudly in frustration. She stormed the rest of the way to her room.
Celestia shut the door forcefully and leaned on it when she was in. She pressed her ear to the door for a few seconds, after she had confirmed there was silence outside she let out a sigh of relief. Thousands of years go by and one thing never changes, I'm the only one that understands me. She thought to herself. She walked over to her nightstand and opened the only drawer it had. She stood quiet, checking again to make sure nopony was listening in. Once she reassured herself that she was clear, she turned her attention back to her nightstand.
Celestia pulled her diary from the drawer and tossed it onto her bed. She walked over to her desk and opened a drawer directly under the middle of the desk. She rummaged around in the drawer, pushing aside sticky notes, index cards, a few paperweights she rarely used, ribbons, a few boxes of red wax, stamp molds, and a book mark or two. She pulled out a glass of ink and two quills from the cluttered mess and walked back to her bed. She layed herself on the comfortable bed and opened her diary to the last page and whispered into the center of the page, "Sunspot," The diary responded by making more pages appear and the words of her earlier entries visible. She opened the ink, dipped a quill, and began to write.
Little time has passed since my last entry. Though it was a few days, more things happened in those days than I ever thought possible. It all started a few days ago when I had gotten word of a human in Equestria. As earlier entries show, the last human that was here left many of my ponies dead, scared land across Equestria, and me with numerous nightmares.
It was because of these that I had decided to stop this human before things got out of hoof. Unfortunately I was attacked and sealed away by Chrysalis, the changeling queen. I was filled in on what happened after. Apparentely, Chrysalis had the same idea and tried to kill him. My sister, however, had different plans. She trusted the human, and because of her the human survived the attack Chrysalis threw at him while disguised.
I thought no good could come from this, but I was wrong. He healed a full hospital of ponies, fought off the changeling queen, and before all of this happened he had fought timberwolves off a train in what I could call a pretty badass way. However, the last human that came to Equestria also did some good, not as much good as this one, but still. When I was released from my prison, I was quickly informed of this and one other thing: the human was battling the changeling queen to buy time for Twilight and her friends to get me out.
This brought some unrest in my mind, the human had gained everyponys' favor except for mine. My mind was overtaken in a debate between the two possiblilities, the human was really good, or this is just an elaborate hoax to gain our trust. I kept skeptical because I thought that the human was an adult like the last one. I, however, was wrong. I found the human fighting the changeling queen on the steps leading to the main entrance of the castle. As I guessed he was fifteen years of age, and beating the chitin off Chrysalis, though he was nowhere close to being in okay condition. He was soaked in a mixture of blood and water with an eight inch wide hole went through with organs showing.
Against my better judgement I put him in stone with the excuse that I needed to set up medical supplies. They bought the excuse, thankfully. It appeared, though, that he was still aware of the things around him. Luna pressed for him to be released, and not wanting to start a fight, I obliged but delayed his release as long I could.
After that, the human seemed to be distant, deep in thought. He kept saying he could feel something bad was going to happen. I was suspicious that this bad thing was him turning against us. So when my sister asked if the bad thing happened, I wanted to know what he was thinking. So I used my magic to read his mind. I wish I hadn't. I heard, or felt, everything. He was worried about my sister and I. He knew this bad thing hadn't happened, but he was worried if he told the truth he might live. He thought how Luna would handle his absence and hoped she would brush him off and forget about him. As for me, he was still worried that I might never trust him.
Then when he thought about himself. He said that he didn't like the idea of dying, but death seemed like the best option. I thought he was joking, but as he thought further, I began to feel worse and worse, because he was kind of right. He was still, at the time, seen as a threat; he was porposeless, because we do now keep the elements closer to their bearers; and what made me feel the worst, he had no way home. I was so caught up in making sure that he wasn't going to turn against us, that I forgot he's just a teen. He didn't want to come here, he didn't even get a choice. After that he went through an unimaginable amount of pain, and still I didn't trust him. Maker, I'm a fool and I was too stupid and blind to see what a good friend he could have been.
What's worse is that he was taken away from more than just his home, he was taken away from his family. Mother, father, and even siblings. I felt a surge of sadness hit me but I somehow managed to push it down for a little bit. Then he thought one last thing, "I just hope that I won't have to wait for my family in the afterlife". I had to quickly cast a spell to hide the tears that streamed down my face.
Celestia paused to let the tears flow off her face and onto the bed instead of the pages. After a shuddering breath, she continued.
The three of us, Luna, Logan, and myself, walked down to a party Pinkie Pie had throw just for him. Sadly he didn't get enough time to enjoy it. Changelings showed up and resurrected Leo, the first human to come here. Last time that I saw him he was nothing but a burned pile of ash. However, using Logan as a template age and Leo's spirt as the form, he was brought back and still had his powers. Leo flew off into the night, following changelings who would give their life to bring back the human army. With the changelings' size and magic, I fear that the human army may be up to full strength soon.
My sadness was put aside with rage against Leo, and against Logan. In my mind I blamed Logan for all of this, when none of it was. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw changelings preparing a spell. From my numerous years with magic, I could easily identify that it was sealing spell. The user dies in order to wipe away a magic code to break the time early, in short there is no way of knowing how long Logan will be gone. But there was something different in the spell, the part of the spell that prevents aging was missing from it. Replaced with a simple teleportation spell. Why? I have no clue.
The attack hit Logan sealing him away for however long the users magic can hold out. If he's lucky, the changelings were starving with no love to feed on from the changelings' last attack. And now here I am, telling Luna that he's dead so she can let go easier, and just sitting in my room. Of all the things, I think the worst part is that this is my fault, I saw that attack and had the warning. The worst is dealing with the guilt that I could have saved him, but because of my anger, I didn't.
