Jack Patrick: The Secret World of Mesozoica
Chapter 6
Previous ChapterNext ChapterJack slowly opens his eyes. Groggy from the night before, he blinks whatever crud is in his eyes before he sits up. He finds himself on his bed after sunrise, still wearing the clothes he wore since yesterday. He rubs his eyes, eager to get rid of the eye crud.
How long was I knocked out? He wonders.
He sits up from laying down and dangles his legs off the right side of the bed.
Suddenly, his cell phone rings, startling him with a jolt and a gasp.
He finds his cell phone on the dresser next to him and picks it up. "Hello?"
His mom is calling him. "Hi, Jack. You feeling better today?"
"Yeah. What time is it?" He asks his mother.
"It's eleven in the morning. I let you sleep in because of how sick you were, so you have no school today."
Jack smiles, glad that he has no school today, especially because when he’s at home, he doesn’t get bullied.
One question comes to his mind, however, so he asks his mother. “How long was I out?"
"I don't know. A few hours?" His Mom answers.
Jack stands up. "Where are you?"
"I'm at work. I'll be home at around two. Make sure you eat breakfast and lunch, and, uh, don't answer the door. I have a key."
"What about Will?"
"It's okay if he comes over.”
"Okay. I love you."
"Love you too."
He hangs up and he places his cell phone next to his Twilight plushie.
Twilight is inside a thick shrub, lying unconsciously on the ground under it, and unable to wake up. A butterfly shows up and lands on Twilight's nose. The feel of the butterfly landing on her causes Twilight to moan, causing the butterfly to flutter away. Slowly, she flutters and opens her eyes, finding herself inside of the thick shrub.
"W-wha-?" She can barely speak.
Slowly, Twilight stands up, as well as get into a crouching position since she’s inside the bushes.
She glances at the ring on her horn. Is it still on my horn? She wonders in thought.
Using her tail, she hangs onto a branch next to her and grabs the ring with both of her forehooves.
Twilight realizes the ring is loose, so slowly, she pulls it out.
She sighs in relief. “I'm glad it won't be getting stuck to my horn again.”
Knowing the ring is not glowing, Twilight puts it back on her horn.
“I wonder where I am?” She wonders.
Twilight slowly moves her head out of the bushes to see where she teleported at. Looking around, she finds herself in the backyard of a one-story house. Twilight slowly crawls out of the bushes.
Twilight's about to call her friends, but if she does, that would draw her attention to the humans.
"Stay focus, Twilight. I need to find that book, and get back to my friends." Twilight whispers to herself. "But a quick reminder: what does that book look like?"
Suddenly, Twilight sees a person from the window, and then, she dives into the bushes.
Jack walks out of his room while rubbing his eyes.
Suddenly, after rubbing his eyes, he sees the bushes slowly moving outside in his backyard. Wondering if he’s hallucinating again, he rubs his eyes. When Jack stops rubbing his eyes, he looks at the bushes to find...that they aren’t moving anymore.
Jack shrugs. Just the wind, I guess.
He walks into the kitchen and heads to the fridge.
As the human inside opens the fridge door in his kitchen, he is unaware of the four-foot tall animated lavender Alicorn outside, watching him.
While he isn’t looking, she trots out of the bushes, tip-toeing on her hooves quietly before hiding behind the wall underneath the kitchen window.
Jack grabs a milk carton from the fridge before closing it up. He also grabs a box of Cheerios from the cabinet above the countertop, a bowl from the other cabinet beside it, and a spoon from the drawer. Afterwards, he walks over to the table and places them on it.
As Jack pours cereal and then milk in the bowl, the lavender Alicorn outside peeks her head and watches him curiously.
But before Jack is about to eat his cereal, he suddenly spots...his book. Sitting right next to his bowl.
"How did you get here?" Jack grabs it. "Hmmmmm... I guess either Mom took it out of my room while I was in bed, or Will placed it here because I left it in the living room."
Meanwhile, Twilight spots the book the boy is holding, and she hides behind the wall out of view from the window as the boy is eating cereal.
Is that the book Chrysalis is after? Twilight thinks. If it is, I better get my hooves on it. But I can't just steal the book from him. I need to find a way to get it.
Twilight looks at the back door that's eight feet to her left.
"Perfect." She says quietly.
After Jack finishes with his cereal, he grabs the bowl and puts it in the sink. He walks back to the table and grabs the milk carton before walking to the fridge and opening it. He puts the carton back in the fridge before closing it.
Jack looks at the book on the table.
I swear I've been knocked out after I was about to read it. Maybe it's some sort of psychological problem I have. There's no way that book can knock me out because it's just a book.
Jack walks over to the table. But, before he's about to pick it up, Jack realizes something.
Or maybe, since I saw the 4D golden T-Rex yesterday after I unlocked that book, it's that book that knocked me out somehow. Or maybe I'm just... hallucinating?
Jack grabs the book, afterwards, he walks out of the kitchen and into the living room. Once there, he walks over to the sofa and sits down. He opens the book and starts reading the first page.
When I was young, I encountered some of the most magnificent creatures I've ever seen. My mother told me they were rescued millions of years ago. Sadly, they all disappeared. My mother transported them all in a safer place known as Mesozoica--where rescued creatures are kept safe from the dangers of our world...
Jack stops reading because he has no idea what the writer's talking about. "What does that mean? I gotta skip the page." He says, then turns the page.
The page on the right reveals an image of some sort of nodosaur, which Jack can't identify the genus because there's no name for it. There are more than one species of nodosaurs, and this one looks like an Edmontonia. However, it isn’t the only species to look like what Jack is currently seeing.
Jack glances at the page on the left to reveal more writings.
This animal looks a lot like a turtle, but, its legs were straight up instead of bent, and instead of a shell, it's covered in hard bony plates and spikes on its shoulders, probably for a defense against predators...
Jack sighs. "Man, this book is confusing."
He stands up and immediately walks to his room.
While the boy is going to his room, Twilight trots under the door handle, and, after some slight difficulty trying to stand upright, she stands on her hind legs to reach the handle. When she stands on her hind legs, she easily grabs the door handle.
“Oh. That was easy," She says to herself.
She gently opens the backdoor a little to fit her body in and quietly steps inside. Silently, she shuts the door behind her.
Twilight takes a deep breath quietly. “Okay, Twilight. Stay focused.”
She lifts her frontal body ninety degrees to stand on her hind legs, and she grabs onto the edge of the table. She doesn’t see the book on the table.
Darn it! Where is it? Twilight thinks.
Then, Twilight hears someone typing from the hallway.
“Hmm...” She says.
She lands on her forehooves on the floor and quietly follows the typing noises. She hides behind the wall on the side of the opened door, and she slowly takes a peek, only to see the boy in his bedroom typing his laptop. She also sees the book right next to his laptop.
Jack is in his room using a laptop that he got for Christmas.
At the moment, he’s on the internet, researching nodosaurs that match the one in his book; however, he's unable to find the perfect match for the color and appearance of the nodosaur in the book.
Jack sighs as he exits his computer and closes it. "I'll never be a paleontologist like my Dad." He groans. "I mean, how am I supposed to know what genus of dinosaur I see in the fossil record?" He rests his palm on his eyes.
In the hallway, outside of Jack’s bedroom doorway, Twilight is watching Jack and becomes curious about what she has heard him say.
Paleontologist? Dinosaurs? What does that mean? She wonders with curiosity.
The boy grabs his book and stands up from his chair.
Shoot! Twilight exclaims in thought.
Hurriedly, she runs into the living room, through it and into the kitchen, and then through the kitchen and behind the wall in the dining room.
As Jack stands up from his chair while grabbing his book, he hears clopping noises coming from outside his room
"Mom? Was that you?" Jack calls.
No response.
Jack slaps himself on the back of his head, thinking he’s imagining things again. Stupid brain!
After that, he walks down the hallway and arrives at the kitchen. He puts the book on the table, thinking that he’d like to be away from it for a bit. When he puts the book down, he walks into the living room. He arrives inside and grabs the remote, turns the TV on, and sits on the sofa in front of it.
As the boy's watching TV, Twilight peeks her head around the corner from the dining room to the kitchen. She spots the book sitting there on the table. She could now officially tell that it is the book she’s looking for because on the side of it is a golden three-toed footprint.
It really is the book we’re looking for! Twilight realizes. This is my chance to get it!
Without the boy noticing, Twilight tip-hoofs quietly towards the table. It doesn’t take long for her to make it. Once again, she stands on her hind legs and grabs onto the edge of the table, then, she reaches her hooves towards the book. Finally, Twilight gets her hooves on the book and slowly drags it towards her.
But, after she drags the book to the edge of the table, the book slips out of her hooves and tips off the table. Twilight catches it, but using her hooves to hold onto the book causes her to fumble with it for a bit because, without magic or hands, her hooves are useless for holding things.
Finally, the fumbling causes Twilight to drop the book. She quickly tries to grab it, but she is unable to as it lands on the floor with a thud. Realizing that she has failed to get the book quietly, she rushes back to her hiding spot.
Jack is on his sofa using the “Science Channel” to watch a show called “How the Universe Works”. For the moment, he doesn’t think there’s anything to worry about, but suddenly...
THUD!
He hears a very loud sound.
He turns to the kitchen to see where the sound comes from.
"What the...?" Jack turns off the TV.
Right away, he walks into the kitchen to investigate the noise. To his shock and confusion, the book he left on the table is on the floor instead.
"How did you get here?" He picks it up and scratches his chin as he holds it.
He places the book on his Mom's desk next to the doorway of the dining room.
Jack looks around the kitchen for signs of activity.
Is my house haunted? Or is it some animal in my house? He wonders. If it’s an animal, then Mom needs to call the pest control.
Jack walks to the fridge for a drink of apple juice. When he opens the fridge, he grabs a bottle of apple juice.
While Jack drinks the apple juice, he turns around to where the book is. Suddenly, something startles him while he’s swallowing his drink, causing him to also quietly cough because his drink went down the wrong pipe. What startles him...is an animated lavender handless arm reaching for the book from around the corner of the dining room.
Quickly, Jack closes the bottle, and he quietly places it on the countertop.
Like a ninja in the night, Jack quietly dashes towards his Mom's desk and grabs the book swiftly before the arm can reach it, whoever owning the arm obviously not noticing because it’s still trying to reach for it. Then...he smacks the arm hard with his book.
"AAAAAOOOWWW!!!" Comes the scream of a teenage girl.
In front of his very eyes, a four-foot tall lavender pony-like creature, with purple mane and tail with pink highlight, large purple human-like eyes, and a tattoo-like mark on its hind legs the shape of a pink six-pointed star, falls onto the doorway screaming in pain from a bruise from the left hoof Jack smacked with his book.
Jack is dumbfounded, dropping the book as he saw it, or her, with his very own eyes.
"What was that for?" The creature yelps.
I...I can’t believe it! It’s...Twilight Sparkle, in my own...house! He realizes, And did she just...speak my language?
The creature then stares at Jack in awe. She blushes nervously. "Hi?"
After she says that, Jack faints backward.
The creature gasps. "Oh no! What've I done!?"
She glances at the book right next to the unconscious Jack. Twilight is about to get the book, but, something in her subconscious tells her that she can't just take it from him. It would be stealing. Since Jack encountered her, all she has to do is introduce herself to the human.
She trots over to Jack, and she shakes him to wake up. "Um, Sir?"
But there’s no response from Jack, which causes Twilight to grow worried.
Across from her into the living room though, she spots a couch.
“Maybe he’ll wake up in a spot comfier than the floor,” She says in thought.
Twilight all of a sudden realizes something: In order to get him to the couch, she will have to push and roll him there with only her hooves and head since she has no magic in this world.
Twilight sighs, thinking that she shouldn’t let that bother her. “Okay, okay, it will be a challenge, but I should not let that stop me.”
So with that, Twilight walks around Jack to where he’s behind his back. She puts her head under his and pushes it up. When she lifts his head, she puts her own head under the top of his back and uses all the strength she has to lift his body straight up.
She breathes with slight relief and exhaustion, glad that she managed to get the upper half of his body off the floor. But then, his body leans forward to where he falls on his chin, his rear end still sitting on the ground.
Twilight puts her hoof to her face in exasperation upon seeing this.
Later...
Twilight is pushing Jack, who is still sitting on his bottom, all across the house from the kitchen to the living room.
She is having a hard time getting to the couch because pushing him is apparently like pushing a heavy sack of flour. She grunts as she pushes him, even while wondering how long she’s been doing this.
Suddenly, something in the way stops her from pushing the boy any further. She looks above him to see that she made it to the couch.
She moves around him to where she’s in front of him and lifts his head and front of his body up. She puts his chin on the couch before moving around to behind him and lifting his bottom up. However, as she lifts his bottom, his chin is lifted off the couch and his back goes backwards. Twilight immediately rushes herself to his backside, but the weight of Jack’s body causes her to flop on her belly.
Much later...
Twilight (who had somehow gotten out from under the unconscious Jack) gets the boy up on the couch, the only problem...she got him up there but put him upside down.
She breathes heavily from all the effort it took.
Suddenly, Jack stirs in his sleep, meaning that...
He’s waking up? Now?! She exclaims in her mind.
Jack slowly opens his eyes and rubs his head. "What a weird dream I had."
When his eyes are open, and the fog in them clears away, his eyes catch sight of the same creature as they did before he fainted.
"Are you alright?" The creature asks.
The human screams and his upside down position causes him to fall in a somersault to the ground, a lucky thing being that he lands on his butt.
He crabwalks over to the corner by one of his living room chairs until he bumps into the wall.
"Hey, hey, hey! Easy, Sir." She says. "I'm not going to hurt you."
"Y-you're not real!" Jack cries.
The creature sports a look of confusion. "What?"
Wait! I shouldn't tell her that! He begins to think with wide-eyes.
What runs through Jack’s mind is that even though he knows who this is, he shouldn’t just tell her that he knows her because of a tv series! He’s afraid of what would happen if he does tell her, such as that she’d be so freaked out by that, or worse...he would cause some sort of catastrophe on the world. So, he decides to act, drawing on what he learned in a Drama class of his at school.
“Okay. Uh, hi there.” He waves his hand, all the while being careful not to give away the astonishment of seeing his favorite character here.
“Hi.” Twilight replies.
“So, uh, this is kinda strange. Seeing a strange creature right here in my house, and very much being...some kind of pony, right?”
“Oh, um, that’s right actually,” Twilight confirms nervously. “I am a pony.”
“I’ve...never seen a pony like you before,” Jack comments. “Are you some sort of new species that escaped from the zoo? Or are you some kind of experiment gone wrong that escaped from a science lab?”
Twilight giggles, suddenly not feeling as nervous. “No, no, I’m not any of those things, although they are interesting thoughts.”
“So, what are you?”
“An Alicorn. And I come from a world called Equestria.”
“And...how did you get in my house?"
"Oh, I used the back door. It was unlocked when I opened it.”
“The back door?” He suddenly facepalms himself. “Oh boy, I am a dingbat. I knew I should’ve checked to see if that door was locked this morning.”
“It’s not your fault,” Twilight tries to assure. “I was the one who entered your house uninvited. I’m sorry for doing that.”
"It’s okay. You were just trying to keep yourself scarce from eyesight.”
A moment of silence suddenly comes upon the two, until Twilight decides to break it by clearing her throat.
"My name is Twilight Sparkle. Princess Twilight Sparkle to be precise, but you can just call me Twilight.” Twilight introduces herself. “What’s your name?”
Jack stands up. "I'm Jack Patrick. I'm a Homo Sapien, or-“
“Human.” Twilight interrupts.
“Y-yeah. How did you know that?” He asks, pretending to be surprised.
“I visited a world full of your kind before, which was called Earth. Although, ironically the one I visited was in a different dimension and not yours, and the humans that I first saw were multicolored instead of...well, you know.”
“Oookaaay.” Jack says, pretending to feel weirded out. Now I definitely know that Equestria Girls is canonical with the show. He thinks with astonishment.
“Well, anyway,” Twilight lets out her right hoof. "It’s nice to meet you, Jack Patrick."
After Jack notices that that is basically a handshake, he shakes Twilight's hoof. "I'm sorry I hit your hoof with the book. I got scared."
"That's okay." Twilight rubs her left hoof. "It’s just a bruise."
Jack then realizes something...his Twilight plushie is in his room, and if she went in and saw it, then what?
“Wait right here," He says, before rushing to his room.
He rushes inside his room and takes a quick look around for his backpack until finally, he sees it. Immediately, he grabs his backpack, rushes to the shelf that his Twilight plushie is sitting on, and stuffs it into his backpack before closing it.
Feeling assured that it’s concealed, he runs back to Twilight, who is looking at him with some suspicion for why he rushed off like that.
"I was just checking on my pet lizard." Jack lies.
"Okay." Twilight understands, although she still feels suspicious.
Jack grabs the book. "Is this yours?"
"No, but, it is actually what I came inside for."
Jack opens the book and reads the title. "Do you know of something called Mesozoica?"
"Not really. Although, I have learned that it’s a different place, possibly another world much like ours, but with different life forms.”
"Oh, well, that certainly makes things clearer. It does actually sound like a name for one,” Jack responds. “Then, you know who this ‘Starswirl the Bearded’ guy is?"
"Oh, yes I do. I rescued him a year ago. He’s a terrific and powerful unicorn wizard in Equestria, who also lead the Pillars of Old against the forces of evil.”
He flips the pages until he sees two with images of theropods with two tiny arms, as well as two clawed-fingers on each of them. Unlike the last creature, he actually finds the two to be extremely recognizable, and can even tell what they are: Tyrannosaurus Rex and Tarbosaurus.
A significant reason for how he’s able to tell is because the skull of Tarbosaurus is slenderer from front to back than a T-Rex, and the lacrimal has more of a domed shape. The skull of a T-Rex is much more heavily built and flares out abruptly at the back, and the lacrimal has a concave shape at the top. Also, unlike the T-Rex, not only that the Tarbosaurus is slightly smaller and less bulky than its North American cousin, but has a throat pouch for mating display.
He shows it to Twilight. "Do you know what these are?”
Twilight analyzes it. "I've seen one of them in cave drawings, but I have no idea what they are. Do you?"
"Yes, actually. The one on this page is Tarbosaurus. The one on the other page is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Or T-Rex for short." He closes the book. "The animals here are dinosaurs, except for the reptiles that fly, the ones that swim, and-"
"How do you know so much about them?"
"Well, my Dad was a paleontologist. Together, we found fossil bones of dinosaurs and dug them up for like...forever."
"Where is your Dad?"
Jack suddenly becomes sad (for real) and shakes his head. "He died in a car accident when I was eight."
"Oh!” Twilight gasps, putting a hoof to her mouth. “I-I'm sorry."
“It’s okay.” Recovering from his sadness, Jack spots something shiny on Twilight's horn hidden under her mane. "Hey, Twilight? What's that on your horn?"
“Huh?” Twilight looks at her horn. "Oh." She pulls an object out of her horn to reveal a ring. "This is a ring that my friends and I found recently."
Jack becomes surprised (for real). "'Friends'? You mean...you're not the only one traveling light years to Earth?"
"Well, long story short: my friends and I were sent to Canterlot mountain by a magic map, and after we found the ring, we entered a portal. But, when we came to your planet, our magic disappeared. And while we were in town, the ring glowed on my horn. After that, I suddenly found myself in your backyard, and...well, you know the rest."
"Can I have a closer look?”
She thinks it over for a moment, before saying. “Sure.” Twilight hands the ring over to Jack.
He closely inspects the ring that is made out of a mix of pure gold and bronze, with carvings of triangles on it in a repeating pattern of right side up and upside down, and a dot at the center of each.
"Does this...ring happen to do anything special?" Jack asks.
"It tracked down the book I came here for. I guess that’s why it’s not working right now, because it teleported me to the precise location, which is your house."
"So, let me get this straight. This ‘magic map’ sent you and your friends on a mission, and you discovered this ring which made you all travel to Earth in order just to find this book I have?"
Twilight nods.
Jack puts the book on the table and grabs his drink. "So, how did you know about this?" He takes a sip.
"We’ve known about it after finding the spell to locate it, and... a little bit before Queen Chrysalis and her Changelings chased after us."
In shock, Jack tries his best not to spit out apple juice as he swallows it.
"You okay?” Twilight asks with concern.
"Yeah. I'm fine,” He composes himself, “So this ‘Queen Chrysalis' character is after you? Why?"
"I don't know. She wanted it so badly so she could take over my planet."
Jack puts the ring and the bottle next to the book. "Don't worry, Twilight. We'll find your friends in no time."
Twilight smiles.
"But first, I gotta call my friend, Will."
She gasps. "No, Jack. I don't think that’s a good idea."
"Twilight, he’s my best friend. I promise he won't tell anyone.” Jack assures.
“Well...” Twilight thinks it over in her head for a moment, nervous about this. But then, she concedes. “Alright.”
“Great. Now, you just wait here and don't touch anything. Copy?"
"I copy."
"Oh, and, uh, you could watch TV if you want. But, don't watch something that's not suitable for children."
"I'm seventeen." She deadpans.
"Just don't leave the house, okay? I'll be right back." And with that, Jack leaves the living room.
He walks down the hallway and heads straight to his bedroom and closes the door behind him.
When he’s sure that no one is around, his expressions of excitement are no longer contained. Right away, he grabs his phone out of his pocket, and looks for Will’s phone number in his Contacts app, intending to tell his best friend the biggest surprise of all.
Author's Note
The nodosaur that Jack saw in a book was a Denversaurus. The reason why he can't identify the genus because every species of dinosaurs belong in family groups related to the species like for example: in Jurassic Park, Alan Grant, who is holding a (scientifically inaccurate) Velociraptor hatchling, can't identify the genus until he asks Dr. Henry Wu what it is because there's more than one dromaeosaur in the family group such as Utahraptor, Deinonychus, and Dakotaraptor.
Also. I'm sorry for taking too long. My editor has some difficult time editing this chapter after I realize I forgot to use google docs. Maybe next time, I'll do it.
