Nightmares and Insomnia

Luna sat in the highest tower of Canterlot, overlooking the destruction and devastation that was quickly being covered up. Celestia had declared that the Element Bearers had perverted the Elements and used it to destroy the part of Canterlot that hosted the Ceremony. Surely not everypony would believe it, but Celestia held the power in her hooves and therefore could say anything. Anyone that opposed would face death or worse. Luna hated it.

Luna looked up to see her bright stars contrast with the new red sky that acted as a portal to another realm. More and more Alicorns were coming through each day, which is what she wanted. But something felt wrong with the whole situation. She saw all this death and destruction and managed to put it to a few single words. Pain. Horror. Regret.

She was a goddess by Pony standards but by Alicorn standards she was a mere foal. Her powers were severely weakened by allowing herself to be a possession of that . . . thing . . . that controlled her. Celestia called it, a symbiote. Luna called it a monster. She remembered.

Luna and Celestia stood before this dark cloud and took in it's malevolence. The creature was detained in a giant glass jar of sorts. Celestia grinned. Luna shuddered. This entity could effectively take another creature and warp them into something terrible. Celestia turned to Luna.

“What do you see before you Luna?” Celestia asked. Luna was unsure how to answer.

“A creature of dark desire.” Luna said. Celestia nodded.

“If that creature were to possess somepony, what do you think would happen?” Celestia asked as she walked around the creature inspecting it.

Luna saw it as a logical question, though with a hint of dark intent. “That creature would inherit the abilities of said pony.” Celestia nodded and continued.

“Now what if it possessed an Alicorn?” Luna stepped back, wondering what to say.

“Celestia what does any of this-?” Celestia interrupted her.

“This creature would possess an Alicorn and do whatever it wanted with it's new powers.” Celestia played with the lock on the jar. “And if it possessed one of us, you know the other would have to stop the possessed one. One would be heralded as a hero, while the other would have to suffer.” Celestia walked over to Luna, whose jaw was wide open. “Don't you see? This will stop the uprisings, and then we can proceed with the plan!”

Luna frowned at Celestia and said, “I don't want to fight you sister. We can find another way to gain the ponies trust, we can-” Celestia stomped her hoof.

“THERE IS NO OTHER WAY!” Luna covered her head, fearing Celestia's great power. She composed herself. “Earning their trust, YOUR way would take thousands of years. My plan would have it done in one.” Celestia levitated the key to the cage and stopped. “This is what the plan will be Luna.” Luna looked at her sister with horror. “You will be possessed. I will stop you.” She put the key into the lock. This made the cloud active. “I will use my power to put you into stasis on the moon. This will do two things. One being almost the complete trust of the ponies in Equestria.” She slowly began to turn the lock. “Two being me finding suitable bearers of the Elements. Without them we don't have any hope of releasing our brothers and sisters.” She slowly backed away from the cage. “You will be freed when the stasis is released, in some sort of dramatic fashion that will only solidify my leadership.”

Luna couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her own sister doing this to her. Celestia smiled and turned the key, unlocking the door. With a flash she teleported away. Luna was alone with the entity. It slowly floated around her. It spoke.

“Come now Luna, do not be frightened by me.” It moved closer and closer. “I have a feeling we will become good friends, you and I.” Finally, it consumed Luna. Her thoughts were erratic. The entity's were as well. First there were two “I's” in her head. Then a “we”. “We can be powerful together Luna, we can be a nightmare for your sister.” Evil thoughts plagued her mind. She liked the sound of that.

“Yes.” She said.

“A nightmare that brings fear just by it's name being uttered.” The dark entity encircled her mind.

“YES!” Luna yelled.

“We can rule this land and beyond it.” The entity said as the clouds around Luna disappeared.

“No.” Luna said. “I will rule it. As an embodiment of a Nightmare. The dark ruler of the night. I AM NIGHTMARE MOON!”

The being that stood in that room was no longer Luna. The thought patterns had merged, and neither one was there. Instead it was one creature. An unsuspecting agent of Celestia's. Celestia heard the cry and laughed. “Step one complete.” Celestia said.

Luna opened her eyes. The plan had gone as Celestia had planned it to. But Luna couldn't put her hoof on why she was feeling pain over the situation. She needed time for it all to sink in. She walked back into the palace. Noticing the Alicorns flying above her. Enjoying their new freedom. How long before they begin to destroy? Luna thought to herself.

Orion had been sitting in his father's old study trying to find something that could help him, something that could be used against an enemy that only knew defeat by being sent away. He went through journals and journals of trivial information and found nothing.

Orion slammed his hooves against the table. “Damn it old man!” Orion threw all the books off the table. “Why couldn't you make a strategy? Why not make a plan to defeat the Alicorns then tell of the great doom?!” He sat back down in his chair and covered his face with his hooves. He had been at this for several hours after Twilight and the others went to bed. He went to the window and looked up at the red sky. Hopeless. That's the word that kept repeating in his head.

He shook it and went to get some coffee. He found Twilight in the kitchen. They both gasped and jumped. Orion looked Twilight over. She was a complete mess. Her mane was messed up, her eyes were puffy, and it looked like she didn't even sleep for a second.

“You know you're not supposed to be up right?” Orion asked as he made his way to the coffee.

Twilight chuckled weakly and said, “I know, but coffee helps me relax in a way. It helps me think.”

Orion nodded and said, “It gives your mind a fresh perspective in a way. Like a good shot of Rainbow Rum from Cloudsdale.” Twilight tilted her head.

“You drink that?” she asked.

“Yeah once and a while, but the pegasus ponies from my bar drink it all the time.” Orion finished pouring himself a cup. “Maybe I should get a shot or two for us huh?” Twilight and Orion chuckled a bit.

“Listen- Orion- I wanted to apologiz-” Before Twilight could finish, Orion put a hoof up.

“You don't have to.” Orion lowered his hoof. “You might have to apologize for the building, but as for over-reacting, you were in your right.” He took a sip. “I didn't consider how some people might take pranks.” He looked out the window. “Some ponies can be affected in ways you don't expect. And you need to be friends before doing a prank.” He looked back over to Twilight. “That prank wasn't friendly in the least, and what they did afterwords was terrible.” He put his cup down and walked over to Twilight. “I know that we had a rough beginning with our friendship, but maybe we can try again?” he asked.

Twilight looked away for a second. “I don't know Orion, how can I trust you?” she asked. “How can I trust anypony for that matter? My teacher, the one I trusted more than anyone creature has released an evil we can barely comprehend.” Orion looked down at the ground, disappointed. “I don't know about friendship right now, but I do know that I want to stop this evil.” She walked towards the old study. “And I'll help you in that capacity.” Orion smiled, there might be hope. Orion grabbed his cup with his magic and joined Twilight in the study, hoping to find a strategy, a plan, a hope.
