As Spike matured into a young adult, he had assumed it would mean greater freedom, independence, and agency over his own life. The last thing he had expected was to be saddled with the aftermath of an ancient curse, and the duty of caring for those affected by it.
But that is exactly where he now finds himself; the caretaker of his six pony friends, all of them hindered by their own excessive girth.
It's not the life he expected, but as he has discovered, he wouldn't trade it for the world.
