Night of a New Moon

Moon POV

*yawn* "Why did they have ta start so early in the mornin'? I would rather sleep." I complained checking my gear and bag. "Lets see, mre's: check, bits: check, change of cloths: check, armor and knives: check."

"Sister I don't see the point in bringing bits on a camping trip?" Nyx voices sleepily form my bed.

Erebus cuffs her. "If ya listen ya would remember. We are goin' ta the night tower coven."

"Oh"

"Ok ya two into my shadow. We need ta get ta school." I tell them as I finish getting my uniform on.

"Ok" They say before jumping into my shadow.

When I got to the training field I found most of my class mates and the 4th year cadets. I waited for Scoots at the bleacher since I left early to get a look at the 4th years. When she got to class I waved her over and told her she didn't need any armor. When she asked why I told her I would let her know on the ride to the Everfree. I then pulled out her bracelet for our two way telepathic communicator.

I could help but smile when she puts it on and hurries to put her hood up to hide her blush. 'Gods its like the day I gave her the earrings and bracelet for the first time. So cute.'

"All right cadets!" Sgt Chaser yells "You will all be with one of the teams from the 4th year class! One of them will be your group leader so listen to them!" She looks at her clipboard. "Now when I call your names get in your groups and check your packs! Put on any gear you need and be ready after the teams are together we are leaving!" She started going down the list of teams. "Free Fall, Flash Fire, Aqua Flare, Scootaloo, Moon Rune! Your team leader if Aqua Flare!"

We went over to them. "Hi I'm Aqua Flare team leader." A light blue unicorn mare with green eyes teal mane and tale, wearing mage robes.

"Hi"

"Hello" scoots says shacking her hand

"Well let me introduce you to the others. This is Free Fall shes our shout." She points to a white pegasus mare with blue eyes, mane and tale in leather armor "And this is Flash Fire." She points to a orange mare with red eyes, mane and tale in standard guard armor.

We introduce ourselves to them before Aqua pulls out a map from her bag.

"Ok so lets see now that we have the two of you in the team. That gives up two flyers, two unicorns and a earth thestral." She places her hand on her chin looking at the map. "Ok if can make good time, this spot here would be good for camp tonight and in the morning we can find a beater place." She points to a spot on the map then looks to us. "Ok you two should gear up and get ready to go."

I pulled my knee and leg guards, knives, shackle, and arm wraps for spells out and put them on. Scoots puts on her knee and leg guards, bracers and gloves and swords on. I dig in one of my bags pocket and pull out a earring.

"Scoots I got another enchanted earrin' for ya ta test." I hand her the earring. "This one is thestral night vision. The only down side is your eyes will look like a thestral but you'll keep your original color."

"Cool" She puts it on and her pupils split becoming catlike. "So how do I look?" She asks I give her two thumbs up.

"Ok two questions?" Aqua asked "One is that all the armor your putting on and what about camping supplies and how did you get a night vision enchantment?"

"This is all the gear we need." I hold up both bags.

"As for how we got the enchantment. The two of us test them for the night guard. Moon mother is a smith for them." Scoots finishes

Before more questions could be asked Sgt Chaser called everypony out to the chariot. They used the larger ones that held 20 ponies per chariot. She then told us we would be landing just outside of ponyville.

Once in the air I touched the side of my collar that held a hidden crystal 'Shoots can ya hear me?'

'Yea. So care to tell me the real plan is and don't say ya don't have one I know you.' She replied

'Well when we get in ta the woods me ya and the girls and ditchin' the 4th years and goin' ta one of the old thestral covens.'

She looked at me in disbelief. 'Really'

'Yep' I said be for looking to our leader. "Team leader when we get ta the forest ya should let me and Scootaloo lead us ta the spot ya picked we know the terrain."

She thinks for a moment "I'm ok with that but we have to talk it over with the other team that's joining us."

Me and Scoots look at her. "Other team?" we say.

"Yes we are allowed to work together so I talked with another team leader and we decided it was a good idea."

I just shrugged "What ever, it wont make a difference."

The rest of the trip we sat in silence till we got closer to the edge of ponyville. When we got there we were meet with a squad of guards and 4 mares. We got all are stuff out of the chariot and meet up with our group. I let my wings out knowing we will get to the cave faster flying.

"So how are my two favorite cadets doing?" A raspy voice calls before a arm comes to rest on my shoulder.

Looking over I find Dash. "Good sis, think you could try not to embarrass me please?" Scoots says squirming in her sisters hold.

"Hi dash. How it hangin'?" I say smiling at her.

"You know same old same old. That and the girls and I volunteered to keep a eye out for rescue flars." She let us go to get a look at us "But I don't think the two of you will need it."

We smirked at her "Yea sis we wont but the team they put us with might."

"Really? Are they that weak? You'll have to show them to me." She says.

"Hay were right here. And it our job as 4th years to keep you safe if a monster attacks." Aqua and her team and another team are standing there looking at us.

"Sis, Moon this them?" We nod she looks them over walking around the group. "Uh-huh... Well I don't like what I see. You two will have your work cut out for you." She sees twilight waving her over. "I have to go it was nice meeting you all and I'll see you two this weekend and before I go. I'm Rainbow Dash element of harmony, code-name loyalty and fastest flyer in equestra."

We walk away from the group and let them catch up. We all wait for the instructors to make there announcement after they tell us to get in formation.

"All right cadets! As you can see once we start we will have guards on standby watching for rescue flares along with Princess Twilight and some of her friends! If you don't know any of them you should! We have Pinkie Pie, Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash!" She points them out as she names them. "Now you have 5 minutes before you set out so do a finial check and get ready!"

Everypony did last minute checks before we head out. The Sgt along with twilight makes one last annoucement telling us what to watch out for in the everfree. The groups start to go in one by one. When our ten pony group enters we head in the direction that Aqua picked for the night. Once far away from the edge of the forest I put my plan into action.

"Ok ponies we stop here!" I say stopping and nod to Scoots.

"What the hay are you talking about? We can keep going before a rest." Aqua says confused.

Me and Scoots start changing directions. "No no, ya and the rest of your team are on your own from this point me and Scootaloo and leavin' ya here."

Aqua stormed up to me and grabbed my jacket collar getting in my face. "Your going to abandoning your team?" She hissing in my face.

Letting my left eye change to mach my right. "Nyx, Erebus!" I growl and baring my teeth at her.

Both rise out of my shadow growling making the others back up and take up a defensive stance.

"You called sister?" Nyx asks

"Sis is it time?" Erebus questioned.

I give them a pet on the head. "Yea we are goin'." I look over to the shocked group. "Just keep goin' in that direction and you'll be good." I say pointing to the side.

The team start to say something as we lift off the ground then the four of us vanish in a blur. I slow down looking back seeing a flare 'They must be calling for a pick up or ta report us.' I catch back up and we fly for about a hour before landing just a few minutes away from the cave.

"Ya ready for a 4 day vacation?" I ask Scoots.

"You know it would be nice, but I would like to get some training in as well."

The girls come running out of the bushes. "We found the cave but the entrance has guards outpost set up." Nyx tells me.

"What?" I stop and look at them.

Nyx looks up at me. "It has four guards watching at the front."

After Nyx explains what they found I take two rank pins out of my bag. "Scoots. Pin this on the in side of your jacket and follow my lead." I tell her handing her a pin.

We continue making our way to the cave. Nyx and Erebus go back to my shadow before we reach the clearing to the cave.

"Halt! Put your hand up and don't make any sudden movements!" A guard calls. We do as told and put are hands in the air.

One of the guards moves from the others over to us. "What are two fillies doing out in the woods with out your parents?"

"Well we live in Canterlot and work for the crown. We came ta do some research at this coven but nopony informed us that a new coven was built."

They look at each other before one speaks. "I'll give you the opportunity to prove it. Put your bags and weapons on the ground and we will take you to the mayor and she can decide."

We comply with the guard putting our stuff on the ground. Two of them take it and lead us in to the caves so we can meet the mayor. When we got to the town its alive with thestrals going about they every day lives. The building look as if they were refurbished from the old crumbling building that I remember.

"Looks like ya all rebuild this place in just over the last 2 months?" none of the guards answered.

We reach a building in the center of town. The guards tell us to wait in a meeting room for the mayor to arrive.

The doors open and a mare with gray fur enters with the two guards from earlier. "So would one of you like to explain what your doing this far from Canterlot?"

I look her over. "What are ya doin' in my home is the bigger question? But how about we try this another way and start with your name?"

The two guards tense up but the mayor keeps composed. "Vary well it might be hard if we don't know each other. My name is Check List and I'm the mayor of this town."

I nod and stand from my chair. "Moon Rune specialist in the night guard." I show them the pin on the inside of my jacket then nod for scoots to do the same.

Scoots stands showing her pin. " I'm Scootaloo and I'm also a specialist of the night guard."

I see the guards sweating and fidgeting in place and the mayor is looking as if shes about to have a panic attack.

We sit back down. "Now if we all could calm down we can talk. Would ya please tell me what a town is doing in this old coven?"

Mayor List got composed "About a month and a half back a letter went out from night court saying that the Princess was looking to rebuild this town. The everfree may not be the safest place but we have safe paths for supplies and travel. As I said I was named mayor and we came from other parts of equestra to settle and make a life for other thestrals." She look to us before continuing "Now I do have some questions and I'm shore you do as well?"

"I do. I will answer what I can."

She nods. "Might I ask what your doing in are town?"

"I told the guards we live in Canterlot. That is true but I also have a home in this coven. No sorry this town. Now I noticed that ya rebuilt. Did ya do anythin' ta the lunar tower?" I say in a serious tone making them tense up.

"No the tower has wards that keep it from decaying and we could not enter do to other wards. You say you have a home in this town if you did we might have sold it without knowing. Do you know were it is?"

I pointed to the tower. "Yes I do. I live in the tower the Princess gave me full access ta it so I could bring some of her things back to her. Before ya ask ya will not have access ta the tower. I will make a report askin' for clarification on why I was not told about this town. Could ya return our gear ta us so we can go Miss Mayor?"

She gulps. "Yes the guards with me can take you to the room it's in. Please have a nice rest of your day."

I stopped before leaving the room. "One more thing mayor. Don't tell any of the civilians or guards other then the two in this room about use. If anypony asks we are new ta town."

She nods without hesitation as we leave. The guards take us to the room with our things and we leave for the tower. I found it amusing the way Scoots looked around the place and at the shops. I had to promise her that we would visit town later and do some shopping. On the walk throw town I send a text to mum letting her know that her plan to visit tomorrow would still be ok. When we got to the tower I gave her access to the tower so she could enter at will.

I opened the door at the at he top to a large room. "So... This is my place what do ya think?"

"Dude... this place is awesome. We get to stay till friday morning?" She asks flying around the room in awe.

Laughing at her actions. "Cool it. We got 4 days to see what this place has." stepping over to a door at the other side of the room I call out to Scoots. "Yo, I'm goin' take a shower! Ya should change ta somethin' ta sleep in for bed!"

After a long shower and getting back to the room I found the door to the balcony open. I took a look and found Scoots look out over the city. I walk out with heavy hoovesteps making myself known.

Leaning on the railing and I let out a sigh. "It a nice view of the town. Its nicer now with lights from all the other ponies around and not just a ghost town."

"It is. Can I ask you a question?"

"Feel free to ask" I say starting to feel nervous.

"Why did you bring me here instead of us just doing the camping trip with the others?" She asked looking down at the town.

"I-I'm a vary selfish pony." I say in a hushed tone.

She looks over to me. "W-w-why a-are y-you only i-in a shirt a-and y-your u-underwear!" She stuttered tuning face away from me.

"This is what I sleep in. So just chill would ya?" I push off the railing and head back inside. "Ya should get changed or just sleep in what ya have on, its up ta ya."

She went and changed into a over sized wonderbolts shirt and shorts.

"Ya should take the bed I'll sleep on the couch." I say taking a pillow off the bed and grad a blanked from a cabinet.

She looks at me then the couch. "What. Why. This is your place it should be me on the the couch not you?"

I shack my head "Uh uh not happenin'. I would be a bad host if I made ya sleep on the couch."

She sighs in defeat "Fine but only for tonight." She gets in to the bed pulling the covers over her head. "Goodnight Moon" she whispers.

I smile to myself. "Night Scoots."
