The connection between worlds happened in early 2020. Sombra tried to create a portal to another world where he had hoped to gain the aid of eldritch creatures in order to aid him in the 7 year stalemate between him and the forces of Equestria.

He found his eldritch creatures.

Within two months, humanity made its first incursion into Equestria, and eventually the humans pulled off what the Kingdom of Ponies failed to do: Seal Sombra and end the war. Time has now passed, and now Equestria has slowly become normalized while welcoming those who came to their aid to a pristine new world. Celestia's unilateral hold over ponykind is fractured. Large portions of her kingdom have seceded, leaving new and old nation states on Equestria to develop deep relations with humanity in order to curb her power.

And in the chaos, one unicorn uses a nearly verboten technique to try and start a herd of her own, only to find that the only one to resonate is a human.
