How to Build a Magearna

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Kalos. Lumiose City. Day.

After defeating Drasna, Ash, Flurry Heart and Flash Sentry were about to continue their task. Getting Flurry Heart her next Pokemon, which was Magearna based on her choices. But as they were about to depart, Clemont and Bonnie came up to them.

"So you're really going to Azoth for that?" Clemont said. "Building a Magearna?"

"That's right!" Flurry Heart confirmed, smiling up at him. "That's my second choice. Magearna is my next Pokemon, even if I have to build one." Her eyes lit up in delight at the thought. Just imagining herself meeting her new partner was exciting!

"Building a Magearna to have one by your side...Genius!" Clemont suddenly yelled. "It's already been done but I wonder why no one ever thinks of that more often! I mean, that's how we get Golett but I can't think of many Pokemon that fit that category."

"Mewtwo counts, right? But it's more on the genetic side." Flash Sentry answered.

"Either way, I'd love to come along!" Clemont's eyes sparkled. "We've seen Magearna obviously...but to see one being built? Or at the very least get a chance to meet the original, it would be an honour! If that's okay with you three?" The boy asked, adjusting his glasses. Obviously, Bonnie wished to come along.

"I wouldn't mind at all. It's been a while since we hung out." Ash smiled. "Flurry Heart?"

"I don't mind whatsoever." Flurry Heart was 100% fine with it. She just wanted to reach Magearna. The faster she got there, the better. Ash then spotted Harmony, who was standing in the distance. The Fused Pony scrunched her face, having not yet returned to Unilight Palace. Ash knew exactly why that was the case.

After all, she was part Fluttershy, meaning her enthusiasm for Pokemon was at an all-time high. But this also involved the other parts of her that do love a good adventure.

"Alright then. You can tag along." Ash chuckled.

"Ah!" Harmony's wings rose up with joy as she pranced over, ready to depart with them all to Azoth.

The Azoth Kingdom.

Azoth. A mechanical kingdom that was built by brilliant genius scientist Nikola using arcane science and arts. The city has many large cogs and gears which power many inventions, including escalators, moving roads, and various transportation devices. Surrounding the kingdom is a large wall that defends the kingdom. Part of the wall can separate from the rest of the kingdom and convert itself into a floating fortress, which was designed to be used in times of emergency.

Ruled by Prince Raleigh and supported by his older sister Princess Kimia, both descendants of Nikola, it is home to the Mechanical Marvel known as Magearna.

The young alicorn gazed at this wondrous kingdom. She'd never seen anything like it. A kingdom completely made up of machines. It was incredible to see it in person. But she was more eager to see the creation of a Magearna. She would soon be met by her fellow Princess Kimia, who would greet them and bring the group to the palace.

"So, you went through with it after all." Kimia spoke to Flurry Heart. "Very well. If you wish to have a Magearna the blueprints for a Magearna is here. The only one of its kind."

"That new scientist Gavial will do it for me, right?" Flurry asked.

"Not quite...Gavial is a bit ill right now, so he's resting for the moment." Kimia informed them, causing Ash to be taken back. Gavial was ill? "However, that doesn't mean that there isn't a replacement." She looked over to Clemont. "I am aware of your reputation as a genius and an inventor, Clemont. Thus, if you'd like to accept this, you can help build it instead of him."

"Hmhmhm...!" Clemont grinned, pushing his glasses up as a gleam ran through them. He would be building a Pokemon?! The very thought made his mind buzz. Not just a robot, but a Pokemon as well? A robot Pokemon? This was too good for Clemont, he'd be absolutely crazy not to take this chance up. "Then I shall gladly build it in Gavial's stead! I won't disappoint you, Flurry Heart. Your Magearna will be the best it could possibly be!"

"Raleigh and I will assist you on that." Kimia pointed at herself. "The two of us inherited our ancestor's skill in Arcane Science after all."

"Perfect! I have so many questions!" Clemont smiled. He would finally be able to make his dream a reality.

"But we need to do this quickly." Flurry Heart informed them. "We don't have much time to spare. My journey needs to begin soon."

"Very well. Then let's begin." Kimia nodded, leading them all to a massive room. It was full of gears, cogs and all sorts of mechanical equipment, perfect for this occasion. All the parts and resources they would need for this occasion was here.

They entered the room that Nikola once worked at, now remodelled and fresh after all these years. Bigger and better, ready to create a new Pokemon for the first time. The large circular gear-door opened up and a platform rose, carrying something wrapped in cloth with it. Reaching the group, Princess Kimia pulled the cover off. Underneath the cloth, was an assortment of mechanical pieces, all scattered together in piles.

"Here they are; the blueprints for Magearna." Kimia informed them all as Clemont took a quick glance at them. All the information he'd need was here. "Our ancestor started off with these parts when making Magearna."

"Alright! Let's do this!" Clemont grinned. "I'll start on this immediately. We'll need all the supplies in here for it to work properly." He turned to Kimia. "This is a sacred task so if I'm correct, then we have everything, right?" He said as he looked at some tools on a table.

"That's correct. This room contains every tool, resource, schematic and formula necessary to construct the project." Kimia explained as Clemont raised his fist, his mind already buzzing with ideas.

"Wait up!" Entering the room in a rush, wanting to get involved in this was Raleigh himself. He barged into the workshop in a rush, his own Magearna right behind him. His eyes lit up in pure awe. "There's no way that I'm going to miss this!" He turned to Clemont. "And for good measure, I brought Magearna over for reference!" He aimed his arm at Magearna, who waved back. Clemont didn't hesitate, raising his arm and getting his goggles prepared.

"In this exact frame, you'll be making a Magearna. Anything beyond that or even deviates from it won't work." Kimia explained, looking at Clemont.

"This won't be the case at all. This time, I won't be adding any extra bells and whistles to my invention. I'll be strictly following the blueprints given." Clemont adjusted his goggles.

"Oh yeah, you used to do that a lot, huh?" Bonnie giggled. Every time Clemont made an invention, it often backfired due to one unneeded component and resulted in it exploding.

"Ah, wait!" Flurry Heart halted them. "Is this gonna mess with it? If possible, I'd really, really like to have my own colour for Magearna!"

"Your own colour?" Kimia and Raleigh repeated.

"Mhm. I mean, it's artificial, so that won't matter right? Look at Magearna here! All these pretty colours...I wanna have new colours for my own Magearna. I-If you can."

"Can that even be done?" Flash Sentry questioned as Kimia and Raleigh looked at each other.

"Oh, totally." Ash was the one who confirmed that it could be done. After all, he's seen another Magearna. "Lillie's family has a Magearna of another colour. That same Magearna's driving them all to find their dad. So any colour is up for grabs."

"Aaah...!" Flurry Heart's eyes lit up with glee. The possibilities were now endless! Any colour could work for her!

"Hm. Alright then." Clemont smirked. "I'll try to implement custom colours and patterns to match Flurry Heart's desires. Give me some details and I'll do my best!" He pushed up his glasses, ready to get started. Flurry Heart's mind started running wild, trying to decide on what colours she'd go with. There were so many colours that would suit her Pokemon...

"It might be wise to use some of the materials outside to help you on that, especially if you want specific colours. There should be more in a storeroom right outside." Kimia spoke. "Magearna will lead you there."

Magearna chimed happily once looked at, gladly deciding to help.

At the Storage Room, they looked around, seeing if any of the raw materials there would be suitable for Magearna to use. Pikachu and Dedenne jumped up at a pile of metal and investigated.

"Pika?" Pikachu noticed something was buried under a pile of metal parts.

"What's this?" He reached and pulled out, looking at what it was. A notebook, blackened, scorched, withered away by time.

Dedenne noticed, pulling Pikachu out. As Pikachu emerged from the pile, Bonnie heard the commotion and checked, noticing Pikachu holding the item.

"What do you have there, Pikachu?"

Pikachu showed Bonnie, prompting her to check it out herself. Upon inspecting it, she realized the burnt pages belonged to a journal or notebook.

"Dene? Dedenne?" The Antenna Pokemon asked curiously.

"I have no idea. Should I check this out, Pikachu?"

"Pika!" Pikachu handed over the notebook. Taking hold of the burned book, Bonnie dusted it off as she began checking out the book, curious of its contents.

Bonnie skimmed through the notebook and read several lines throughout it. Every sentence that caught her attention filled her head with knowledge as well as confusion. The author of the notebook seemed to be Nikola himself, and he had written in his thoughts.

To sum it all up, the content inside were the words of regret, guilt and shame that came to mind. The writing focused heavily on a particular topic, The Soul Heart

Meanwhile, upstairs, Ash, Clemont and Kimia were working on the designs. Clemont was drawing out several blueprints and notes to assist with the design of his personal Magearna. In order to give it Flurry Heart's preferred design, Clemont drew many concepts that would fit the criteria presented earlier.

"And how will you design its colors?" Kimia asked.

"She just said it's based off a starry night. Like a dark blue and purple-pink gradient, right? Pretty simple and easy enough, if you ask me. Although...I've never really created a Pokemon that had certain colours...I've never created a Pokemon at all, honestly." Clemont replied.

"Can't be that hard. It's basically putting different colors on it during production. There might be a note here for that." She flipped through one of the books she was reading. "Although, there is one thing we have to take in to account. The Soul Heart. Not only is the natural ability of Magearna, but it's what truly powers the Artificial Pokémon. Without the heart, it has no power, and thus, it won't be Magearna."

"That heart? What is it?" Flurry Heart asked.

"As mentioned before, it's the power source that fuels Magearna. However, it also grants Magearna a personality, unlike many robots who would need to be taught emotions, thoughts, and experiences before having personalities. This Soul Heart allows Magearna to bypass the slow development process and gives Magearna emotions and memories. Its function, while unique, is the key factor to a functional Magearna." She closed her eyes as she turned to face Magearna. "In fact, this very Soul Heart holds the memories and feelings of those that were close to you. That way, no matter how long it takes, you and Magearna can feel connected by those feelings."

"That makes sense..." Ash nodded. "But where are the plans for the soul-heart anyway?" They weren't included within the schematics, surprisingly. Something so crucial had been left out entirely.

"There should be a way to build one in the blueprints." Clemont deduced.

"They're not. The Soul-Heart cannot be reproduced. Not yet at the very least. I've tried finding ways to replicate it, but there's nothing."

"Aww..." Flurry Heart pouted. That didn't bring any good news for her.

"I know of a way." Speaking up was Harmony, who walked into the room. "Something like this is rather simple for me."

"It is? Do you have a way of making the Soul Heart?!" Clemont gasped.

"Mhm. In my universe, the technology was on another level, remember? In fact, Unilight was home to so many Magearna. Some would say we overpopulated it with Magearna, haha." She chuckled fondly. "Point is, we had plenty of methods on how to create one. But considering you're just starting out, we'll go with a simple method instead of relying on pure Magic. It'll be easy, so just leave it to me."

"How does this happen though? How are we going to create the Soul Heart?"

"I think I understand." Raleigh's eyes narrowed as he stroked his chin. "For Magearna, you're basing its personality and emotions on the memories held by the people closest to you. Basically, you put emotions and memories into a special heart that serves as Magearna's core and the entirety of their body. Once done, the heart will develop into the complete form of Magearna. Is that correct, sister?"

"More or less." Kimia answered. "It's how Magearna gains their emotions."

"However...You didn't specify how we'll gather memories and feelings...What will we have to do?" Clemont questioned as Harmony kept a grin on her face.

"Leave that part to me."

"Alright! We're ready." Clemont had finally finished with his blueprints and had laid out everything on a table. He looked at everyone. "I need everyone to listen to me closely for this part because it involves all of us."

"We're here!" Bonnie called out.

"Dene..." Dedenne greeted, poking his head out of Bonnie's pouch.

"Pika!" Pikachu chimed.

As they entered the room, Harmony was preparing some kind of spell. She levitated several pieces of metal that Clemont had designated for the body. To help further control them, Harmony casted several bands on her arms and hands, connecting the pieces of metal together as they floated in mid-air.

"You sure about this?" Clemont questioned the alicorn who just snorted as a reply. Clearly, she was positive this would work. "Anyways..." Turning back to Bonnie, Clemont then went on to explain what the group's role was in all of this.

"So we're basically thinking of some fun memories we had our whole lives?" Bonnie clarified.

"Yes. I'm not sure how this exactly works but from what Harmony told us, we need to imagine and focus our favourite moments."

"And we can include memories of ourselves in general?" Ash asked, wondering if he could relive some past events in his head.

"Yes. Our objective here is to help give Magearna life through those memories." He looked at the others. "Now, just concentrate and think of the happiest times of your life! I know I'll do the same."

Within Everyone's Memories.

Ash looked back on his many memories. The times he shared with all of his friends throughout the years. Each of them were important to him but none stood out more than one specific moment. The day he met Pikachu. Although they didn't get off to a good start, their friendship would become strong as steel. And then they travelled everywhere alongside Brock and Misty. Every region they went to was an amazing adventure and the perfect beginning of a life long journey.

And that journey brought them to Equestria and how both worlds have met, further expanding the friend pool, giving new opportunities and strengthening new and old bonds.

And every journey after that was just as incredible. All these memories flowed out of him, entering Magearna.

Flurry Heart meanwhile had less memories compared to her father and mother. She came from another universe after all and that universe had been conquered by Empress Twilight of the Twilight Imperium. There, she grew up living under the rule of the Empress, the entire Crystal Empire becoming the Crystal Kingdom. Even her parents were missing after the Empress took over and she still has no idea where they are. But after coming to the main universe and having Ash and his friends taken down the Twilight Imperium, she finally made wonderful memories. Cadence and Shining Armor took her in as if she was a part of this universe and she Even became somewhat of an older sister to her baby self.

She made sure only the good memories flew into Magearna.

As for Bonnie, she thought back on her many memories with Clemont. Most importantly, she recalled the moment she reunited with Squishy after nearly losing it to Lysandre and Team Flare

"Pikaaaa..." Pikachu too was recalling memories, mostly focusing on Ash. Meeting his partner was the greatest moment of his life. Pikachu knew right there that this human was special and that he would stay by his side, supporting him for the rest of their days.

All these thoughts flowed through Pikachu, sending all of those memories to Magearna.

Harmony chuckled fondly at them all. Her universe was a rather nice place, a true utopia. Outside of when Prisma attacked everyone, prior to that, she had so many wonderful adventures that it was overwhelming to choose. Since she was five ponies in one, the memories of those 5 ponies meant 5x the Memory Bank, giving a greater boost to the creation of the Soul Heart.

Clemont smiled as he reflected on his past. While he could admit that he messed up quite frequently and often got ahead of himself, he knew that in the end it turned out alright. Not only did he have a lot of great memories with Bonnie, Serena and Ash as they explored Kalos from start to finish.

As for Flash Sentry, his was rather tame. Nothing bombastic compared to everyone else. Rather simple, but nice. An easy life that led to his role as a Royal Guard.

Magearna absorbed all these thoughts, gathering them within the artificial being.

"Keep at it, you guys!" Clemont encouraged. The gears around Magearna were spinning wildly around the creation as electricity danced along its outer shell.

With all these thoughts and memories reaching this inactive creation that had yet to be fully developed, something in the middle of its body was manifesting itself.

The bright orb glowed beautifully, lighting up the darkened room. It felt magical to witness the creation of the soul-heart, with the machine growing brighter as this continued.

"Don't lose focus! You have to keep this up!" Harmony exclaimed.

"...How do you like this memory?" Kimia closed her eyes and placed her hands over her chest. Memories of her and Magearna flashed within her mind. All those tender moments that were precious to Kimia and Magearna alike, they were her most precious possessions in the world. A smile slowly crept upon her face as Magearna's light intensified.

Princess Kimia let out a sigh as she stepped back. Everyone looked at each other. With so many memories floating in them, the soul of Magearna formed almost instantaneously. But there was one more thought that flowed into the Magearna. it was tiny and it came out of Ash, slipping by. But it was not a memory he had.

No. It was the memory of another.

Soon enough, they were ready. Magearna's soul heart was now fully completed. The mechanical marvel glowed even brighter, prompting the princess to step back. Slowly opening its eyes, Magearna saw the others staring at it. The lights returned to the room, showing Magearna in its entirety. The metallic body was shimmering in the light, reflecting its surroundings as it tilted its head.

"Woah..." Ash murmured in awe at the beauty of this newly born pokemon.

"Did...it work?" Clemont slowly approached Magearna, examining it up close. For the most part, it seemed to work fine. Everything about this was on point with the blueprints, although there was still the question as to whether it functioned like an actual Pokémon or not. Regardless of that, it was indeed complete, now functioning with a soul heart of its own.

Not only that, but the colours came to life perfectly as well. Just as planned, it shone beautifully, captivating the entire room with its existence. With it fully functional, there was no telling what the possibilities would be for Magearna from here. "Wow..." He whispered.

"That looks awesome...!" Ash looked closer. The colour-scheme was different, yes. However, the beautiful shine, the polished metal, and its design overall made this a worthy sight to behold. Its blue eyes twinkled, filled with curiosity as the pokemon scanned the environment around it.

"S-So it is real. It worked." Kimia's voice trailed off in awe. After seeing the success of Clemont's efforts, she found herself lost in words.

"Magearna..." Flurry Heart stepped forward as she stared at the newly created pokemon. "...Are you there...?" She questionend, wanting to see just what Magearna was capable of saying.

The metallic body moved, twisting and turning until eventually it was facing the ground below. It tapped on the floor beneath, then gazing upward toward Princess Kimia.

"It's alive!"

Kimia observed the mechanical body. Its design was unlike anything she'd ever seen before, despite sharing many similarities with its predecessor. This was Magearna. Their goal had been achieved, and the robot was fully functional once again.

"Yes!" Flurry cheered, throwing her arms up.

"It worked!!"

"It did!!" Bonnie jumped.

Both of them hugged in excitement, joined by Pikachu and Dedenne. Together, the trio rejoiced at the sight of a revived Magearna.

However...

"So...How does this new Magearna compare to the original? Did we really recreate the same thing?" Clemont couldn't tell if his new creation was similar enough. He took pride in creating something so complex such as this and had hoped he succeeded. If not, then the chances of them having to rebuild were high.

Raleigh's own Magearna was equally amazed. She now had another one of her species to connect to. While she was never alone, now she would have the chance to make an even closer connection.

Flurry Heart's Magearna would then look at the one pony standing before her. Flurry Heart herself. It was finally active. Fully operational, alive once more, and staring back at her creator, Flurry Heart. She reached out to it, and it did the same in response.

"Magear?" She spoke, having her own voice compared to the few known Magearna in the world.

She didn't know how to respond. She'd been expecting it to act more robotic than this. Instead it was acting almost like it was alive. "H-Hi! My name's Flurry Heart!" The young princess introduced herself to the Pokémon before her.

"Magearna..." She turned and approached her, tilting her head. "Gear?"

"Eheeee!" Flurry Heart squealed as she pranced around with glee.

Flurry's Magearna then looked at her surroundings, observing the other individuals in this room. Her gaze then locked onto the one Pokemon that was of the same species as her. Raleigh's Magearna.

"Magearna! Gearna!" Magearna spoke, her tone indicating happiness.

"Magear..." Raleigh's Magearna replied, her tone softer than normal. She didn't know what else to say, so she simply stood still and waited for further interaction. Raleigh was surprised at the reaction.

"Oh my..." Kimia was surprised. The two Magearna were interacting. And not in the way one would expect from robotic creations. They were communicating, like actual living things.

"She's doing good." Clemont nodded. "Everything seems to be in order."

"Great!" Flurry Heart jumped in excitement. "I can't wait to bring her home!" She exclaimed, looking forward to showing her parents and the others her new partner. But while they were all loving this moment, proud to have helped create such a marvel, Magearna's attention drew to someone else.

As a Magearna, she could naturally read the emotions of others. Everyone here was naturally happy, which would mean that nothing would be amiss. But something was amiss. When looking at Ash, while Ash himself didn't have any negative emotions going on, Flurry's Magearna could sense another presence, a small fragment of a soul inside of Ash, and that soul wasn't feeling positive at all.

She felt Prisma's soul.

"Magear!" And upon sensing that destructive soul or great negative emotions, Magearna did the unexpected. To everyone's surprise, she suddenly jumped out of the window, crashing through the glass and falling down. Flurry Heart's eyes widened.

"W-What?!" Flurry Heart exclaimed, running to the window, with the others following behind. She watched as Magearna plummeted straight down, landing somewhere far below.

That truly caught them all off guard. While they have succeeded in their task, it came with something else. Magearna knew of Prisma and her reaction to this was one of fear as the journey continues.
