Today our heroes are riding the cable car up mt. chimney and to the home stretch to Lavaridge Town.

“So all we have to do is go down the road at the top of Mt. Chimney and we will reach Lavaridge Town? “Aqua asked.

“According to the Pokenav, that is the case, “Turquoise said.

“So what is your plan for this gym? “Fluttershy asked.

“According to the Pokenav, it says here the gym leader Flannery specializes in Fire-type pokemon, So my Dewott should beat them no problem and Espeon can definitely hold her own,” Turquoise said.

“True but what if this is more than a two on two battle? “Fluttershy asked.

“I’ll wing it,” Turquoise said. Soon the cable car reached the top and once they got off they could feel the heat from the volcano.

“Wow it sure is hot up here, “Aqua said while fanning herself.

“Well we are on top of a volcano so of course the heat will rise up, “Fluttershy said.

“Now that we reach the top, time to descend the path down to Lavaridge Town, “Turquoise said. The girls followed the pathway down and treading carefully. They soon arrived back at the bottom but this time on the path that overlooked a small town which was in fact Lavaridge Town. They entered the town and swung by the Pokemon center first but what was different about this one was the hot springs entrance. Soon Nurse Joy got their attention.

“Have you girls come to try the hot springs too?” Nurse Joy asked.

“Not right now, we came to ask where we can find the Lavaridge Gym,” Turquoise said.

“The gym is located near the edge of town, it’s the building with the walled gate and red roof, “nurse Joy said. The girls set off to where the gym was and found it. The girls entered and noticed it was empty.

“Hello?” Turquoise yelled but no one responded.

“Guess the gym leader is not in, “Fluttershy said.

“Oh well guess we should come back another time, “Aqua said. Just as she said that a woman with red hair wearing a black crop top with a flame on it and jeans was running around while on fire.

“Hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot,” The woman kept repeating while running back and forth.

“I got this, " Aqua said before calling out Marshtomp. “Use water gun. Marshtomp unleashed water gun on the woman which put out the fire and stopped her from running.

“Thank you, " the woman said.

“Out of curiosity are you the gym leader?” Turquoise said.

“I sure am, I'm Flannery, I've been the current gym Leader for three years now,” Flannery said.

“Funny because from what we just saw, it looked more like your first day as a gym leader, “Aqua said.

“Sorry old habits die hard,” Flannery said.

“That aside, why were you on fire?” Fluttershy asked.

“I was training with Mag and Meg,” Flannery said.

“Who?” Aqua asked before a couple of Magcargo came up to her.

“They are my sweet magcargo, we were practicing when their flamethrower caught me by accident,” Flannery said before realizing something. “Hey wait, what are you guys doing here?

“I came to challenge your gym, “Turquoise said.

“I see, well I would love to accept your challenge but currently my battlefield is still undergoing maintenance from my last challenger,” Flannery said.

“Was it that severe?” aqua asked.

“They liked to use dig a lot so filling the holes and such will take time,” Flannery said.

“You mean to tell me we came all this way for nothing?” Aqua said.

“Now hold on, I did not say no, just not yet,” Flannery said before inviting them inside for drinks.

“So Flannery, what are the rules for your gym? “Aqua asked.

“We do three on three battles here, “Flannery said.

“You mentioned being the gym leader for three whole years now, who was the previous gym leader? “Fluttershy said.

“That was my grandpa, old man moore,” Flannery said before continuing. “I was not as confident in my abilities or anything for that matter like he was and one time when he let me run the gym for three whole days I was so focused on training Mag and Meg that I neglected my duties big time.

“What happened to your grandfather?” Aqua asked.

“Sadly he and his Typhlosion passed away three years ago, so now I'm the official gym leader and I promised to keep the flame of the Lavaridge town gym burning, “Flannery said.

“Speaking of the gym, how long until the battlefield is ready?” Turquoise asked.

“The cleanup crew should have it ready soon, “Flannery said.

“You have a cleanup crew?” Fluttershy asked in disbelief since a lot of gym leaders usually do the maintenance of the battlefield for their gyms personally.

“Yeah I’m not as good a gym leader as my grandpa was, so I need lots of help in maintaining the gym,” Flannery said. Soon one of the clean up crew came in.

“Your battlefield is now fully repaired mam, “He said.

“Perfect timing, “Flannery said. Soon Flannery and turquoise went to the battlefield which looked good as new. Turquoise noticed that there was no judge.

“Where is the judge?” Aqua asked.

“Hold on, he should be here any moment now, “Flannery said. Soon a man dressed as a pokemon judge came in and took his position on the ref’s spot.

“Sorry I'm late, I was not expecting the field maintenance to be done this soon, “the judge said.

“It’s ok now let's get this battle started, “Flannery said with confidence.

“Right, The battle between Flannery the gym leader and Turquoise the challenger will now commence, each side will use three pokemon and the battle will end when all three of one sides pokemon are unable to battle, lastly, only the challenger will be allowed to substitute pokemon, “The judge said which Flannery was ok with. “If both sides are ready, begin.

“Slugma, time to go, “Flannery said as she called out one of her Magcargo.

“Go Dewott,” Turquoise said as she called out Dewott.

“Slugma use flamethrower. Slugma unleashed a flamethrower which Turquoise considered to be a bold move.

“Use water Gun. Dewott fired his water gun which collided with the flamethrower. Both moves pushed against each other but dewott’s water gun managed to win and score a powerful hit on Slugma.

“How can that be, Slugma should be stronger,” Flannery asked in surprise.

“It’s called type advantage, strength has nothing to do with it,” Turquoise said before Flannery regained her composure.

“I knew that, I was just testing you like any gym leader would,” Flannery said, hoping Turquoise would buy that.

“Anyway back to the battle, Dewott use Razor Shell. Dewott drew both his shells before forming two blades of water and began rushing towards Slugma.

“Ok Slugma use Reflect. Slugma created a screen in front of her which blocked the razor shell.

“What just happened?” Aqua asked.

“That’s Reflect, a move that creates a barrier that reduces the damage from physical attacks,” Fluttershy said.

“So now what? How will you deal with my defensive wall?” Flannery said with overconfidence.

“Return Dewott,” Turquoise said as she recalled Dewott, which took Flannery by surprise.

“What is she doing? Dewott had the advantage,” Aqua asked.

“Just watch, “Fluttershy said, picking up on what Turquoise was up to.

“Go Espeon, “Turquoise said as she called out Espeon.

“Battle resume,” The judge said.

“Espeon use Psybeam. Espeon fired her psybeam which managed to break through Reflect and land a critical hit which caused Slugma to faint.

“Slugma is unable to battle, Espeon wins,” The judge said while pointing his right flag at Turquoise.

“But how was that possible?” Aqua asked.

“You see Aqua, Turquoise knows the difference between Light Screen and Reflect, so when she saw Flannery use reflect, she decided to switch into Espeon who uses special attacks,” Fluttershy explained.

“Return Slugma,” Flannery said as she recalled Slugma. “You did your best, gotta say I was not expecting you to switch out like that.

“I know Reflect only works on Physical attacks,” Turquoise said before guessing that Flannery was going to use one of her Magcargo only for Flannery to have a surprise for Turquoise this time.

“Go Quilava,” Flannery said as she called out a Quilava.

“What pokemon is that?” aqua asked before pulling out her pokedex.

“Quilava, the Volcano pokemon, The fur covering this Pokémon's body never burns, no matter what. It can shrug off any kind of fire attack,” Aqua’s Pokedex said.

“Gotta say, you got me this time,” Turquoise said.

“This is a memento of my grandfather,” Flannery said before the battle continued. “Quilava use Swift. Quilava sent a bunch of stars flying towards Espeon.

“Too easy, Espeon use Psychic on that swift. Espeon took control of quilava’s swift which took Flannery off guard.

“What? No, that can't be possible, “Flannery said once again losing her composure.

“Oh it’s possible all right, “Turquoise said as Flannery’s Quilava was being pelted by its own swift attack.

“Quilava use Flame Wheel. Quilava was cloaked in fire that began to rotate as it ran towards Espeon and nailed her for a critical hit.

“Return Espeon, “Turquoise said as she recalled Espeon. Turquoise wasted no time in calling Dewott back out. The judge gave the order for the battle to resume.

“Quilava use Smokescreen. Quilava unleashed a cloud of black smoke from its mouth which covered the battlefield. Dewott could not see Quilava due to the smoke. “Now use quick attack. Quilava took advantage of Dewott’s inability to see to nail him from many angles. Soon his health was reduced so much his torrent ability kicked in.

“Use razor shell and listen for Quilava’s movements. Dewott closed his eyes and focused his hearing.

“Like that zen stuff will work here, Quilava use Quick attack to finish this. Quilava moved swiftly as it entered the smoke. Dewott picked up on the sound of Quilava’s footsteps and then drew his razor shell which landed successfully and when the smoke cleared Quilava fainted.

“Quilava is unable to battle, Dewott wins, “The judge said while pointing his right flag at Turquoise

“Return Quilava, “Flannery said as she recalled Quilava. “You did your best, you are quite unpredictable.

“Thanks, I guess, “Turquoise said.

“But let’s see you handle my real ace, Go Torkoal,” Flannery said as she called out her Torkoal.

“Think you can finish it Dewott? “Turquoise asked with Dewott nodding yes.

“We shall see, Torkoal use Flamethrower. Torkoal unleashed flamethrower. Just before Turquoise could give a command Dewott began building up power between his paws before a sphere of water formed which turquoise recognized.

“I see, then let's do it, Dewott use Water Pulse. Dewott unleashed water pulse and with the extra power from Torrent it was able to push through flamethrower. Just when it was about to land, flannery reacted.

“Torkoal use Iron Defense. Torkoal retreated into it’s shell before it turned to iron which reduced the damage from water pulse. Once Torkoal came back out it looked fine despite taking damage. “Now it’s our turn, Torkoal use Overheat. Torkoal unleashed a powerful blast of fire that was heading straight for Dewott.

“Dewott use Razor shell. Dewott drew both shells before retaliated with two water blades. Unfortunately overheat was too strong and as a result dewott took it and then fainted.

“Dewott is unable to battle, Torkoal wins,” The judge said while pointing his left flag at Flannery.

“Yes I finally knocked one out, “Flannery said with joy.

“Return Dewott,” Turquoise said as she recalled Dewott. “You did good now rest little samurai. Turquoise decided now was the time to try out her newest addition to her team. “Go Vulpix. Flannery looked intimidated at first until she saw that it was an Alolan Vulpix and not the kantonian one that had the ability she read about.

“This one does not have that annoying Flash fire ability, does it? “Flannery said.

“Nope Snow warning,” Turquoise said as a cloud began to form over the battlefield and unleash snow.

“Well regardless, you just made a big mistake challenging me with an ice-type.

“We shall see,” Turquoise said.

“Battle resume, “The judge said.

“Torkoal use Overheat. Torkoal unleashed another Overheat but this one was slightly weaker than the last one.

“Dodge and use Confuse ray. Vulpix got out of the way and managed to nail Torkoal with a bright light that confused it. “Now use moon blast. Vulpix unleashed a pink blast of energy that was heading straight for Torkoal.

“Torkoal use Iron defense. Unfortunately Torkoal banged his head which not only damaged itself but also allowed for Moon Blast to hit and deal the final blow to Torkoal.

“Torkoal is unable to battle, Vulpix wins which means victory goes to the challenger,” the judge said while pointing his right flag at Turquoise.

“We did it, “Turquoise said with joy as Flannery recalled Torkoal. Flannery approached Turquoise.

“I must say you are quite strong and full of surprises, and as proof of your victory, I present you with the heat badge,” Flannery said before giving Turquoise a red flame-shaped badge with a yellow orb on it.

“Thank you,” Turquoise said.

“So may I ask where you girls are going next?” Flannery asked.

“Easy, Back to Petalburg City, now that I got four gym badges Max will surely accept my challenge this time, “Turquoise said.

“In that case, if you see Max tell him Flannery is doing fine,” Flannery said before the girls returned to the pokemon center for the night. As soon as all of Turquoise’s pokemon were healed the girls decided to soak in the hot springs. Where will our heroes go next? Stay tuned. As the journey continues.

I hope you all enjoy this chapter. I could not decide if I should show Flannery the way she was in the games and anime or just do a more confidant version but then decided it's best to show her as the same scatterbrained ditz we all know and love.
