Heroes Of Canterlot City
A Cut Above
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe faint sound of a knife slicing through delicate fish echoed in the sleek, polished kitchen of Black Industries. The young sushi chef moved with precision and grace, her every motion deliberate and measured. She cut sashimi with the skill of someone who had spent years perfecting her craft, making sure every piece was perfect—thin, even, and flawless.
As she worked, her client, Sombra, head of the powerful Black Industries, sat at a pristine desk across from her, engrossed in his phone. His eyes flicked between the screen and the chef, as if waiting for the moment to judge her skill.
“I hear you’re one of the best sushi chefs the city has to offer,” Sombra said without looking up, his voice dripping with condescension.
The chef, dressed in a simple but sharp black uniform, didn’t flinch at his words. Her eyes were focused, her hands moving skillfully, as she finished placing the last of the fish on the plate. She then slid the tray of perfectly prepared sashimi in front of him.
“Your people underestimate me,” she replied, her tone unwavering, a flicker of pride hidden beneath her calm exterior. “I am the best.”
Sombra glanced at her now, finally giving her his attention, his eyes narrowing slightly. “I’ll see about that,” he said, not quite believing her confidence.
The chef stepped back slightly, watching with quiet anticipation as Sombra picked up the first piece of sashimi. He placed it in his mouth without hesitation, savoring the taste, but within moments, something unusual happened. A tingling sensation ran down his spine, and his fingers started to feel cold.
His entire body began to go numb, his vision blurring at the edges. He dropped the chopsticks in his hand, his mind struggling to make sense of what was happening. His body refused to obey him, and he slumped back in his chair, unable to move, completely paralyzed.
The chef stepped closer to him, her face cold and unreadable.
“Relax, you’ll survive,” she said, her voice smooth and calm.
Sombra, still trying to comprehend the situation, fumbled for his phone with shaking hands. He managed to dial for help, his voice barely a whisper, but before he could make a full call, the chef, known as Shadow Claw, appeared beside him.
With the swift movement of her hand, she pulled a sharp, glinting knife from her pack and jabbed it into the wall, pinning Sombra’s phone to the surface with a satisfying thunk.
“Need that? Not anymore,” she said, her voice full of chilling satisfaction.
Sombra could only stare at her, his body refusing to cooperate as she calmly withdrew the knife from the wall. His mind screamed for help, but his body was trapped in the unyielding grip of the poison, a poison expertly designed by Shadow Claw herself.
“Don’t worry,” she continued, her eyes narrowing with a devilish glint. “You’ll be just fine, as long as you do what I say.”
His lips barely moved, and his eyes pleaded for a way out, but he couldn’t speak. He nodded, as much as his frozen body would allow him to.
Shadow Claw leaned in closer, her presence looming over him like a shadow. She gave him a cold smile, and the tension in the room grew thicker with every word she spoke.
“I want the prototype that lies in your secret safe,” she demanded, her voice low and dangerous. “You work for me now, Sombra.”
The implications of her words hit him hard. The fear of his company’s secrets falling into her hands was enough to make his heart race, even though he couldn’t physically move. She had him—completely under her control.
She walked around him, pulling her knife from her pack and slipping it back into its sheath with the ease of a professional.
“Now,” she said, glancing down at him one last time. “Tell me where it is, and I’ll give you the antidote.”
The room was quiet except for the soft sound of Sombra’s uneven breathing, his mind still fighting to regain control of his own body. Slowly, he nodded, the words forming in his mind but unable to reach his lips. Shadow Claw waited, her eyes glinting with the satisfaction of knowing she had the power now.
Shortly after Shadow Claw’s escape, the Crystal Guardians gathered at the Black Industries building. The once-imposing structure now felt cold and tense as the group split up to investigate the aftermath of the daring heist.
Blue Thunder and Sugar Girl searched for clues in the hallways and offices, looking for anything Shadow Claw might have left behind. Blue Thunder zipped from room to room, while Sugar Girl scanned the area with her hyper-keen sense of detail.
Meanwhile, Star Sparkle and Solar Flame delved into Black Industries' computer system, Sunset’s fiery hands deftly bypassing firewalls while Twilight used her geode-enhanced tech skills to dig into encrypted files.
In Sombra’s lavish office, Crystal Freeze, Apple Smasher, and Butterfly stood over the paralyzed businessman. Sombra sat stiffly in his chair, his body still recovering from the toxin that had immobilized him.
“Try to stay relaxed. I will help ease the tension,” Butterfly said gently, placing her hands on his back. She activated her geode, and her fingers vibrated softly against his shoulders. Despite his predicament, Sombra couldn’t help but feel some relief as the vibrations worked to calm his nerves.
Apple Smasher crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing at the man. “Alright, big guy. Who did this to ya?”
Sombra’s lips moved slowly as he regained more control of his body. “It... it was Shadow Claw,” he rasped, his voice still weak.
Crystal Freeze raised an eyebrow. “Shadow Claw? That sounds like the name of a low-budget action movie villain. What exactly did she steal from you?”
Sombra hesitated, his pride clashing with the reality of his situation. “It’s... top secret,” he said evasively. “She poisoned me to get it, but it’s not something I can share with—”
At that moment, Star Sparkle and Solar Flame entered the room, looking grim.
“We found the project files,” Star Sparkle announced, holding up a tablet. “Sombra was building a Gravitational Disruptor.”
The room fell silent as the words sank in.
“A what now?” Apple Smasher asked, narrowing her eyes.
“It’s a device that can manipulate gravitational fields,” Solar Flame explained. “It could destabilize entire areas, create zero-gravity zones, or even pull buildings apart. In the wrong hands...” She let the implication hang in the air.
Blue Thunder appeared in the doorway, her arms crossed and her face set in a scowl. “So you’re telling me you built a device that could basically tear the city apart, and now some crazy assassin lady has it?”
Sombra frowned, clearly irritated by the accusation. “She doesn’t have the entire device. She only managed to steal half of it—the activator core. The other half, the stabilizer, is still locked in my private vault.”
Crystal Freeze stepped forward, her icy gaze locking onto Sombra. “And why, exactly, should we believe you?”
Sombra sighed, his voice laced with frustration. “Because I don’t want her to have it any more than you do. If she gets her hands on the stabilizer, she’ll have full control over the Disruptor, and I’m not going to let that happen.”
“Seems to me this is all your fault in the first place,” Blue Thunder muttered.
“But we’re not here to point fingers,” Butterfly said softly, her calming presence easing the tension in the room.
Sombra leaned forward slightly, his strength slowly returning. “Listen, I don’t care what you think of me. Just keep this quiet. If word gets out about the Gravitational Disruptor, it’ll cause a panic—and I have enough problems to deal with.”
Apple Smasher raised an eyebrow. “And why exactly should we keep this little secret of yours?”
Sombra hesitated, sensing an opportunity. “What do you want?”
Crystal Freeze smirked, her fingers drumming lightly on her arm. “Simple. You’re going to fund the renovation of Canterlot High’s football stadium.”
Sombra blinked, clearly taken aback by the request. “That’s it? A football stadium?”
“Not just any football stadium,” Solar Flame said, her voice firm. “Our school’s been overdue for repairs for years, and if you want us to stay quiet about your little gravity machine, you’ll make it happen.”
Sombra considered this for a moment before nodding reluctantly. “Fine. I’ll make the arrangements. But you’d better stop Shadow Claw before she comes back for the stabilizer.”
“Don’t worry,” Star Sparkle said confidently. “We’ll stop her before she even gets close.”
Crystal Freeze stepped toward Sombra, her icy demeanor commanding his attention. “One last thing—if we find out you’ve been hiding anything else, this deal is off. Understood?”
Sombra nodded, the weight of the situation sinking in.
As the Crystal Guardians regrouped, their focus shifted from interrogating Sombra to preparing for their next move. Shadow Claw was still out there, and now they had the key to tracking her down.
“Let’s move,” Solar Flame said, her determination clear. “We’ve got a city to protect.”
Back at the clubhouse, the Rainbooms gathered around Twilight’s laptop, analyzing the security footage Sombra had provided. The grainy video showed the skilled and enigmatic Shadow Claw moving through the Black Industries building with terrifying efficiency. Her movements were smooth and calculated, her every step a display of precision.
Twilight tapped a few keys on her laptop, cross-referencing the footage with files she had pulled from the police database. “According to these records, Shadow Claw isn’t a regular criminal. She’s a work-for-hire mercenary.”
“Work-for-hire?” Fluttershy asked, her voice tinged with confusion.
Rainbow Dash leaned back in her chair, kicking her feet onto the table. “Basically, she’s a mercenary jobber. If someone’s got enough cash, she’ll do whatever they need—steal, spy, sabotage, you name it.”
Twilight frowned, looking at the footage again. “It’s just... I’ve never seen anyone this precise before. Look at how clean her cuts are! What are her blades even made of?”
Sunset, who had been studying a sample of the material residue left behind by Shadow Claw, held it up for the others to see. “This stuff is incredible. I mean, I’ve never seen anything like it!”
Twilight adjusted her glasses and pulled up an image on her screen. “Her blades are made of graphene. It’s as thin as paper but as strong as steel. Look at this!” She zoomed in on a high-resolution image of one of Shadow Claw’s knives. “Graphene can cut through almost anything—metal, concrete, you name it. And because it’s so thin, it leaves behind almost no residue.”
Applejack crossed her arms, leaning forward. “How rare are we talkin’ here?”
“Rare as rare comes,” Twilight replied, her tone serious. “Graphene is expensive to manufacture, and only the best engineers and scientists know how to handle it. Whoever made her weapons knew exactly what they were doing.”
“Like a blindfolded samurai slicing a falling piece of paper?” Pinkie Pie asked, miming a sword slash.
Twilight nodded. “Exactly. This isn’t something you’d find in a normal criminal’s arsenal. Whoever hired her spared no expense.”
Rarity tilted her head thoughtfully, resting a manicured finger on her chin. “If Shadow Claw finds out she only got half of the Gravitational Disruptor, she’s bound to come back for the other half. And knowing her, she’ll be prepared.”
“That’s not the only problem,” Fluttershy said softly, reminding the group of another pressing issue. “Don’t forget, it’s a school night.”
Rainbow Dash groaned. “Ugh, don’t remind me.”
Fluttershy continued, “Mr. Barker reminded us that there’s an assembly tomorrow morning, and he said anyone who skips it will get detention.”
Sunset sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Great. So not only do we have to figure out how to stop Shadow Claw, but we also have to make sure we don’t miss school tomorrow.”
Pinkie Pie raised a hand, grinning. “Well, at least the assembly isn’t as bad as fighting a supervillain with samurai swords!”
“Not yet, anyway,” Applejack muttered.
The next morning, Canterlot High's auditorium buzzed with chatter as students filled the seats for the mandatory assembly. Mr. Barker, the school’s stern attendance officer, stood near the stage, his arms crossed and a smug grin on his face.
“I bet those girls aren’t here,” Barker muttered to himself, already anticipating the joy of finally catching the Rainbooms breaking the rules.
As the students settled down, Barker’s grin faltered. Through the large glass doors of the auditorium, he spotted Sunset Shimmer, Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and the rest of the group casually walking in, chatting and laughing like they didn’t have a care in the world.
Barker’s face fell as he grumbled under his breath. “Every time...”
Nearby, Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna passed by, sharing a knowing smile as they watched Barker’s frustration.
“Still trying to catch them in the act?” Luna asked her sister.
“It would appear so,” Celestia replied with a chuckle. “And, as usual, failing miserably.”
The assembly began as the principals stepped onto the stage. Principal Celestia greeted the students with her usual warm demeanor.
“Good morning, students,” Celestia began. “We’re thrilled to have you here today. We have some exciting news to share with you all.”
Vice Principal Luna stepped forward, her tone more formal but equally enthusiastic. “Thanks to a generous donation, Canterlot High’s football stadium is officially being renovated.”
The room erupted into cheers, and students exchanged excited whispers. The long-overdue repairs to the stadium had been the talk of the school for months.
“And don’t forget,” Luna continued, “to come out and support our team at the homecoming game later this week. It will be a night to remember!”
Meanwhile, at an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city...
Shadow Claw leaned against a rusted desk, casually inspecting one of her knives as she waited. The faint hum of machinery and the sound of dripping water filled the dimly lit space.
The buyer, a sharply dressed man with a scar running down his cheek, finally arrived, flanked by two bodyguards. He approached the desk, his cold eyes narrowing as he set a briefcase down in front of her.
“Well?” he asked curtly. “Did you get it?”
Shadow Claw reached into her bag and pulled out a small metal case, setting it on the desk. She slid it toward him with a smirk. “Here it is.”
The buyer eagerly opened the case, his expression shifting from anticipation to frustration as he stared at the contents.
“This is only half of the device!” he growled, slamming the case shut. “You expect me to pay you for only stealing half?!”
Shadow Claw didn’t flinch, her confidence unshaken. She crossed her arms and leaned toward him, her expression cool and unwavering.
“You hired me to steal the device from Sombra’s safe,” she said calmly. “And this is what was in his safe. So, yes, I expect to be paid.”
The buyer gritted his teeth, his hands balling into fists. “This is useless without the other half!”
Shadow Claw’s smirk widened as she pulled one of her knives from its sheath and stabbed it into the desk between them. The sound echoed through the room, making the buyer’s bodyguards flinch.
“Then I guess you’ll need to hire me again,” she said, her tone dripping with amusement. “If you want the other half, you know who to call.”
The buyer glared at her, clearly frustrated. He opened his mouth to argue, but before he could get a word out, Shadow Claw’s other knife was at his neck. The blade hovered just close enough to remind him who was in control.
“Careful,” she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You hired me to steal it. I delivered. Now, are you going to pay up, or do we have a problem?”
The buyer’s jaw tightened as he suppressed a growl of frustration. Finally, he waved a hand, signaling one of his bodyguards. “Fine. I’ll pay you double—but only if you bring me the whole device.”
Shadow Claw smiled, withdrawing her blades and twirling one between her fingers. “Pleasure doing business, sweetie,” she said with a wink.
Before the buyer could respond, Shadow Claw threw a smoke bomb onto the ground. A thick cloud of gray engulfed the room, and by the time it cleared, she was gone.
The buyer clenched his fists, staring at the empty space where Shadow Claw had stood. “That woman is going to be the death of me,” he muttered under his breath.
The Black Industries building stood eerily silent under the cover of night. A full moon cast long shadows through the corridors as Shadow Claw, clad in her sleek black assassin’s gear, moved swiftly and silently through the restricted areas.
Her target was clear: the vault.
Sombra had hidden the second half of the Gravitational Disruptor inside—a vault filled with his most dangerous inventions. If her intel was correct, the stabilizer core would be in there, completing the device and making it fully operational.
Shadow Claw rounded a corner and saw the heavily reinforced vault door standing at the end of the hallway. A smirk played on her lips. Almost too easy.
She took a step forward—
“Hey there.”
The casual voice cut through the silence, making Shadow Claw halt in her tracks. Suddenly, the lights flicked on, revealing three figures standing between her and the vault.
Apple Smasher, arms crossed, cracked her knuckles as her stone-covered fists glowed with energy. Star Sparkle adjusted her glasses, her hands charged with pulsating magic. And Solar Flame stood at the ready, small embers flickering at her fingertips.
“Lookin’ for something?” Apple Smasher asked, raising an eyebrow before charging straight at her.
Shadow Claw reacted instantly. She sidestepped at the last second, letting Apple Smasher's momentum carry her forward. The brute force attack missed its target, and Apple Smasher stumbled, barely catching herself as she skidded to the floor.
Not wasting a second, Shadow Claw whipped out her graphene blades and flung them toward Star Sparkle.
CLANG!
Star Sparkle’s magic shield materialized just in time, deflecting the deadly projectiles. But before the blades could hit the ground, Shadow Claw flipped forward and snatched them mid-air, seamlessly redirecting them toward Solar Flame.
Solar Flame barely managed to duck in time, feeling the wind of the razor-sharp blades pass above her.
“You missed,” Solar Flame taunted, smirking.
Shadow Claw smirked back. “Honey, I wasn’t aiming at you.”
SHINK!
Behind them, the vault door suddenly split apart, cleanly sliced open.
The girls turned just in time to see the metal pieces sliding apart—revealing the stabilizer core of the Gravitational Disruptor, glowing faintly inside its protective case.
“Son of a—” Apple Smasher growled.
Before they could react, Shadow Claw dashed forward, grabbed the stabilizer core, and twirled it in her hands with a victorious grin.
“Well, color me impressed,” she mused, glancing at the three heroes. “You kids lasted longer than I expected. But I’ve got places to be, so... buh-bye.”
She tossed a smoke bomb at the ground, filling the room with thick gray fog.
Cough! Cough!
Solar Flame waved her hands, trying to clear the smoke. “Oh, come on! This again?”
As the haze dissipated, Shadow Claw was gone. The vault was open. And worst of all... the Gravitational Disruptor was now complete.
Star Sparkle clenched her fists, taking deep breaths to steady herself. “This is bad. Now she has all the means to screw with gravity.”
“And not the root beer float kind,” Solar Flame added grimly.
Apple Smasher punched a nearby wall in frustration. “I still can’t believe we just got our butts handed to us.”
Star Sparkle adjusted her glasses, her mind already racing through possible solutions. “We need to get back to the others—now. If Shadow Claw activates that device, the whole city could end up floating away.”
Apple Smasher cracked her knuckles. “Then let’s stop her before she gets the chance.”
The dimly lit hideout was silent, save for the quiet hum of the Gravitational Disruptor resting on a table in front of Shadow Claw. She leaned back in her chair, twirling a knife between her fingers as she waited.
Moments later, the buyer arrived, flanked by three burly goons, each armed and ready for trouble. His sharp eyes landed on the device immediately.
“Do you have it?” he asked, voice laced with anticipation.
Shadow Claw smirked, lifting the disruptor and giving it a slight toss before catching it effortlessly. “One Anti-Grav device, complete with a city-wide range radius. All yours.”
The buyer stepped forward, nodding in approval. “Good. Your payment’s double.”
But just as he reached out to take the device, Shadow Claw yanked it back.
“What’s the meaning of this?” he demanded, eyes narrowing.
“Change of plans, big boy,” she said smoothly, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “I’m selling this sucker on the black market. The highest bidder gets it.”
The buyer clenched his jaw in fury before snapping his fingers. His goons moved in, reaching for their weapons.
Shadow Claw only grinned. “Oh, you poor things.”
With lightning-fast reflexes, she flicked three pieces of sashimi into their mouths.
“What the—?” one of them started to say before his body locked up.
All three collapsed to the floor, paralyzed within seconds. The buyer took a cautious step back, his expression now filled with alarm.
“Don’t worry,” Shadow Claw said, sheathing her knife. “The effect only lasts about three to five hours. Long enough for me to disappear. Catch you later.”
She turned to leave—only to find her path blocked.
Standing before her were Blue Thunder, Crystal Freeze, Sugar Girl, and Butterfly.
“I believe you have something that doesn’t belong to you,” Crystal Freeze said, conjuring her signature Crystal Mace.
“Last chance,” Blue Thunder warned, her hands crackling with electricity. “Give yourself up, or things get ugly.”
Shadow Claw chuckled, playing with one of her blades. “Guess I have no choice...”
With a flick of her wrist, she subtly pulled another blade—but before she could throw it, Sugar Girl’s hair suddenly stood on end.
Her eyes widened. “DUCK!”
The girls hit the ground just as Shadow Claw’s blade whizzed past them.
Shadow Claw lunged at them, but the girls scattered.
Sugar Girl and Blue Thunder rushed at her, but before they could land a hit, Shadow Claw seemingly vanished into thin air.
Blue Thunder skidded to a halt. “Oh, come on! She can go invisible too?!”
Crystal Freeze, meanwhile, had managed to secure the disruptor, keeping it out of Shadow Claw’s reach.
While still invisible, Shadow Claw moved silently toward Butterfly, aiming for a sneak attack.
But just as Shadow Claw was about to strike—
Butterfly’s eyes flashed green.
With startling precision, she spun on her heel and delivered a powerful kick, sending Shadow Claw slamming into the wall.
The room fell into stunned silence.
Even Butterfly looked at her own hands in shock. “…Did I just do that?”
Shadow Claw groaned, her invisibility fading as she slumped against the wall, defeated.
With Shadow Claw safely locked away in jail, the girls gathered back at their clubhouse to regroup. Sunset, Applejack, and Twilight listened as the others recounted the fight, their expressions shifting between shock and excitement.
“So let me get this straight,” Sunset said, crossing her arms. “Fluttershy—our Fluttershy—just took down Shadow Claw with a single kick?”
Rainbow grinned. “Yup! It was awesome!”
Applejack raised an eyebrow. “Not that Ah doubt ya, sugarcube, but... how?”
Fluttershy blushed, fiddling with her hands. “I... I have no idea.”
Before anyone could say more, Sunset’s journal started glowing. She quickly opened it and read the message from Princess Twilight.
“Whoa,” Sunset muttered, eyes scanning the page.
“What is it?” Twilight asked, adjusting her glasses.
Sunset looked up with wide eyes. “Princess Twilight says that each geode has unique effects. Fluttershy’s geode doesn’t just let her talk to animals—it lets her mimic them.”
The room went silent.
Fluttershy gasped softly. “You mean... I can do things like animals do?”
“That explains how you sensed Shadow Claw’s attack,” Twilight realized. “You must have tapped into some kind of... I don’t know, predatory reflex.”
“I... I guess?” Fluttershy said, still processing everything.
Applejack whistled. “Well, ain’t that somethin’. Guess we got ourselves a wild card.”
Sunset smiled at Fluttershy. “You’re stronger than you think, Fluttershy. This is just the beginning.”
As the girls cheered for their newest powerhouse, Fluttershy couldn’t help but smile. Maybe—just maybe—she was stronger than she ever realized.
