The Origin Of Derpy
Chapter two: A new beginning

I sailed down the river for hours until I got caught on some tall grass that grew among a concealed part of the river that ran straight through the Everfree forest. I began to cry from my exhaustion and hunger. I must have been loud enough that somepony could hear me and began to walk over to investigate my noise. I was silent and studied my surroundings as the hoofsteps approached me. The willows that grew rampant in the opening made a natural darkness that covered most of the morning light that seeped through their leaves. A cloaked figure hovered its head above me and my basket. The mysterious pony stood their until I heard the mare speak.
"Hello there." She said with a smile as she removed her hood over her head. Her hair was a mixture of cyan and crimson red that was swept forward with a single hair standing up where her hair parted and making a curl while the of her hair running down her neck looked as if it had been in a fight and lost. Her coat was a dirty white, and her eyes were a baby blue.
"What are you doing out here filly?" Where are your parents?" She asked quizzically. I naturally began to cry at the question. "Ah shit! Shhh... hush" she said repeatedly lowering her hooves downwards trying to silence me. Suddenly a howl could be heard nearby and her eyes grew wide, and she sprinted off. I sat there with an ere silence that befell the area. The silence was broken with the sound of breaking twigs making their way towards me. I lifted my head from my basket and saw three timberwolves making their way towards me. Their eyes a disgusting shade of yellow with saliva running down the agapped mouths with their sharp jagged teeth grinning at me. I rolled over, trying to angle myself to stand up. Up until that point in my life I have never walked, nor even stand. I tried copying the images that nurse Redheart had taught me in her books, trying to stand to get away. I even began to flap my wings... but had little to no effect in benefiting me. Once I began put weight on one of my hooves, I lost balance and fell out of my basket landing on my stomach. One of the timberwolves observed my actions and bolted towards me, pinning their front right paw on my neck and clamped down onto my wings crushing them instantly, as to prevent me from trying to escape again. The pain was indescribable, my eyes became waterfalls pouring out tears of pure agony as my head fell to the forest floor. I blacked out a few seconds after that.
Earlier that day
"Hey Daze... You awake Daze?" No answer. "Daze wake up!"
"Uhhhh what do you want Sandy?" I said with a groan as I tossed my blanket over myself to show I wasn't interested in talking to her.
"Well you know what today is right...? I turn twelve... What's supposed to happen?" The mare asked as she looked doown upon me from the top bunk of our bed. My eyes shot open from the question, and I turned around to faace her.
"Heh...Uhh.... What do you mean?" I replied trying to cover up my initial fear by rubbing the back of my neck.
"Well Ms. Lily and Cobblemane both say tha-"
"Shush Sandy. Nothing like that happens. Today's just another day. So happy birthday." I said with a stern tone to her.
"Thanks Daze, I feel much better now." She said as she climbed down from the top bunk almost falling down onto her haunches.
My name is Daze, I don't know my last name since I was born into this place. From the outside it looks like a normal well run orphanage... But that's all a lie. Truth is, is that this place is hell on equestria.
"Alright Daze." Siad Sandy with a smile and a obvious skip as she made her way out the door. Luna I hope she didn't see my tear. I closed the door and put my back to it slowly sliding down the plank until I was on my haunches, with both forehoofs in my face abosrbing my tears.
The truth is... Well I couldn't bare to tell her the truth. I want her to retain some innocence for however log she could have some.
I choked off my crying, got up and made my way to the window and began looking out of it. Our room stood on the second story of the main building. As I looked for Sandy on the outter part of the compound I saw Ms. Lily's good Cobbleman make his way to her, he put his hooves around her neck and began leading her into Ms. Lily's office. I began crying again as I saw her last moments of innocence fade away with the closing of that door.
Here's how this so called orphanage works. Your given a shot here... If Ms. Lily lets you. A chance to get adopted and get out of here, that's if your lucky enough to get zone 1. Zone 1 is the outer wall of the orphanage where they put all the little fillies outside to play and have a foalhood. If you get adopted great! If not... Well then you get zone 2. In zone 2, your a slave. You work from dawn to dusk slaving away in Ms. Lily's mines. Some of us are special though and can get out of it... That's if you catch the eye of Cobblemane. I think you know what I mean by that... Anyways if your like me then you get special treatment and don't have to work in the mines and you even get your own room. I chose to bunk with Sandy though so I could try to protect at least one filly in this hell, but in return you have to give the guard ponies special treatment. You see know one knows about zone 2 or anything that goes on here for 3 reasons. One, after zone ones playground theres a building built in a giant circle enclosing off the main build of the orphanage where everypony sleeps and behind that build there's a chain link fence with barbed wire atop of it that none of the foals see because of a special hallway leading from the main tower out to zone 1. Reason two, Ms. Lily is a unicorn and uses her magic to ensure none of the pegasai see what is going on from above with an illusion spell. And reason three is Cobblemane, the main guard of the compound. Sure there are more than just one guard, but he's the real brute. He's the reason why I cant fly... You see once you reach a certain age he will take you into a special room and break your wings to make sure you don't go off flying and telling everpony what's going on here.
The whistle to let everypony know that the fillies were in the yard and work was now to begin sounded off. I grabbed my gray wool cloak that hung within my clost, put it on and made my way out of the room going down the staircase that led to the bottom of the tower. Once at the bottom there were two doors. One marked fillies with on guard on both sides of the door and the other read Mares/Cots that had no security, but a line of workers with morale broken and heads hung low. They all wore stripped uniforms that looked like prisoners attire. As I made my way to the fillies door as to go into zone #1 (one of the priveleges I get with being.... Cobblemanes pet.) A colt in the other line spat on the back of my neck as I walked past and the whole line began jeering at me. A tear shed from one of my eyes as one of the guards jumped from his post and began to beat him mercilessly for his actions. I jerked my head away from the savage beating and made my way through the door, through the hall and out to zone #1. As I reached the outside I was greeted by Stormcloud, Sandy's friend
"Hey Daze! Have you seen Sandy around? I wanna give her this.: She said while holding up a red heart laced with purple saying 'Happy birthday to my PBFF.'
"Uhh sorry Storm... I havn't seen her." I said with a lie, I knew exactly where she was. And the fact that she was lead into Ms. Lily's office instead of work meant she caught the eye of Cobblemane too.
"Ohh... Wellllllllllllllll, if you do see her can you tell her I got something to give her?" She replied with ignorant bliss, not knowing the fate that had befallen her friend.
"I'll be sure to do tha-" I was cut off by the foulest voice in the world.
"Welllllllll if it isn't everypony's favorite mare... Go run along Stormcloud I can let Sandy know for ya" Cobbleman said, sending a chill down my spine and twisting my innards.
"Thanks Mr. Cobblemane!" Stormcloud said with a smile and a wave of goodbye to the both of us.
"Soooooo where are you going for your afternoon stroll today, huh Daze?" Cobblemane said rubbing his hoof subtley up my flank until finally reaching my cutie mark that resembled a flame.
"Uhh out" I said quickly, as I moved my flank away from his prying hoof.
"Oh? Into the acres? What for?" Cobble said in the most annoying voice he could muster. (Once again having Cobblemane's eye has it's privelegs. Unlike the others I'm able to leave this hell... Somewhat. The acre leads right into the Everfree forest and although Cobblemane always sends one of his goons to watch over me I always escape his eye's within the forest. But if I'm not back in a certain amount of time, he comes after me himself.)
"Oh nothing just some fresh air." I said not looking him directly in the eye. I needed to escape from the harsh reality that Sandy now faced.
"Hmm well, I suppose I can let you go; I have to look over Sandy today. It's her birthday today, did you know? My where does the time go. Seem's like only yesterday she was just a filly and now she's becoming a young mare." Cobblemane said. I had to hold back my urge to cry and beat him with as much strength I possessed in my body.
"Ye....ahhh I know; So can I go now?" I said as I pointed to the white picket fence that stood in front of the zone.
"Hmm? Oh sure." My question apparently breaking his daydream about Sandy's flank... Bastard...
He opened the gate and let me out, I lifted the hood of my cloak over my head and began trotting down the natural dirt that lead right into the Everfree forest. I made my way into the forest, taking notice of Cobblemane's escorts shadow pass me by. I continued to follow the road until I hit the river that ran through the forest. Although I can always escape the line of sight the escort has on me, that does not mean he's not looking, so I always head down to a special grounds where even the sharpest eye's can not see through. I followed the path until reaching the spot. I took a deep breath and began to untie my cloak when I head a sound. I went over to investigate it, and to my surprise a little filly with eye's looking every which way they could began to stare at me. I let my cloak down.
"Hello there" I said with a smile. "What are you doing out here filly? Where are your parents?" I said thinking to myself aloud. Without warning the filly began to cry. "Shit!... Shhh.. Hush!" This did not help at all. She must have no idea about the dangers within the forest. I heard a blooding chilling howl and began looking in all directions. Seeing no other options at the moment I sprinted off away from the filly. I hid behind some brush not far from where the filly lay in her basket. I poked my head up from it and came into full view of 3 tiberwolves that had been attracted to her and her scream.
I continued looking and saw the filly try and make her way away from them, first by trying to lift herself up but failing in her attempt. Then by flapping her wings. Not a moment later one of the timberwolves had her pinned down and was clamping down onto her wings. A heart wrenching howl was heard from the filly for a second or two then nothing at all. I instantly looked back at my wings having all the pain I have endured myself wash over me like a tidal wave. If it wasn't for the fact that Cobblemane had broken my wings I would have just swooped in myself and lifted the filly up out of harms way. I began thinking of the worst possible out comes of the situation.
There was no way I could leave the now unconscious filly to fend for herself. Then a plan hit me. Without a moment's hesitation I looked at the now empty basket the filly laid in just a few moments earlier, and began to make my way over to it slowly as to not attract the wolves attention. I lowered my head and gripped the basket within my mouth as I took notice of the other two wolves making their advance towards the filly. I took the opportunity of the unaware wolves and charged at the one holding the filly within it's jaws headbutting it to the ground knocking her free of the wolfs grasp. While the wolves began to register what had just happened I quickly swiped the filly up and stuffed her back into the basket and began running down the same path that I had followed earlier. I was out of the line of site when I heard a blood chilling howl announcing that the chase was on.
I weaved and ducked under branches, bushes, roots all with the safety of the filly in my mind and nothing more. I continued on my path that lead me to my spot to make sure of one thing, that the guard saw me. If I were to exit at another location he wouldn't be there. I sure as hell cant take all these timberwolves on by myself but on of Cobblemane's men are more than capable of it. I made it to the edge of the forest bursting out of it like a bat out of hell, with leaves scattering all around me from my speed. Instantly the wolves did the same and were gaining, that is until my plan kicked in. The guard swooped down and landed hard making the dust from the dirt road scatter around him in a ring. He braced himself downwards looking as if he was ready to charge and spread out his wings into their full length. I wasn't on sticking around though to see my plan in action. I continued to run down the road knowing full well that I was re-entering hell... But at the time it seemed like the lesser of two evils.
