Chapter XII – Opening up

“Hey Silver you coming for a coffee?” Red Bartlett asked.

“Sure, Applejack you coming?” Discord replied looking over to Applejack.

“Nah, ahm gunna clean up here then head on home seeing as we’re nearly outta apples. I’ll see yah tomorrow Silver.” Applejack replied picking an empty bucket up.

“Alright I’ll catch you later then.” Discord replied.

The two said their goodbyes and Silver left with Red Bartlett, Applejack smiled as she watched the two leave. It had been six months since Discord was freed from his stone prison to be reformed, in that time he had managed to integrate himself successfully into Ponyville under the alias of Silver Tongue, Fluttershy’s friend from Detrot. During most days he would assist Applejack or Applebloom in selling apples in the marketplace and on others he would help the other five girls.

From time to time Applejack would have to chase Discord in a fit of rage as he insisted on turning some of the left over apples into animated creatures, causing a good laugh for the other members of the Apple family.

He and Applejack would also go off with Red Bartlett for lunch breaks and today was no different, aside from Applejack not joining them of course. Red had come to enjoy Discord’s company finding his wit and sometimes childlike maturity when it came to pranking people around the town fun and Discord had come to enjoy Red’s in return, finding him to be a good trustworthy friend as with Big Mac.

The two came to the café just as Fluttershy was coming out, she saw them both and waved to them and came over. She embraced Discord with a warm hug to which he happily returned.

“Hello Red, how are you doing this afternoon?” She asked.

“I’m fine thank you Miss Fluttershy, yourself?” He replied.

“I’m fine thank you, well I must be off I need to see Twilight about something. I’ll see you later Silver.”

Fluttershy smiled and gave him a kiss on his cheek, Discord smiled happily as he watched her walk off. Red chuckled and nudged him in the side with a goofy grin on his face.

“When you going to ask her out Silver?”

“W-wait what do you mean I mean were just friends.” Discord replied quickly.

“Uhuh.” Red said unconvinced.

Red kept teasing him as they sat down to order their drinks much to the annoyance of Discord, Fluttershy happily walked through the town and couldn’t help but hum to herself as she walked to Twilight’s home.

However Fluttershy was not all too happy, in the six months since he was released Discord had begun to have nightmares that ranged from minor ones to ones where we would wake up screaming in cold sweat panicking. Fluttershy was growing more and more concerned for Discord’s well-being as he would sometimes spend nights staying awake and refused to sleep. Fluttershy had offered to help him and asked him if he wanted to talk about his nightmares but each time he said it was nothing and just being there for him was enough. Last night Discord was an especially nasty nightmare it seemed and the pair had stayed up for a large portion of the night, Fluttershy silently holding him in her arms comforting him.

To Fluttershy this was the final straw, she had had enough though and decided to ask Twilight if she would be willing to contact the Princesses to see if there was any way they could help her. She knocked on the door and waited for an answer patiently, the door was opened by Spike.

“Oh hey Fluttershy come on in.” He said before turning his head and yelling. “TWILIGHT! FLUTTERSHYS HERE!”

“Ok Spike thank you.” Twilight replied from the top of the stairs.

Fluttershy entered the library and took a seat on the sofa; she politely declined a drink from Spike as she waited. It wasn’t too long until Twilight descended down the stairs with a smile on her face.

“Afternoon Fluttershy, how are you?” She asked giving Fluttershy a friendly hug.

“Oh I’m fine thank you Twilight, yourself?” She replied and returned the hug.

“I’m fine thanks, so what can I do for you?” Twilight asked as they both sat down the sofa.

“Well…you remember that night you girls came over and Discord…well…broke down as it were.” Fluttershy started.
“Yeah…that was really strange seeing him like that if I’m honest and no offence but back then I didn’t think he could express those kinds of emotions.” Twilight replied.

“I understand.” Fluttershy said unoffended. “But ever since that night, he has been having on and off nightmares about something but won’t open up, claiming its nothing and I shouldn’t worry about it.”

She paused and fiddled with her hair her eyes watering up slightly as she sniffled.

“But I am worried Twilight.” She continued. “I see him some nights suffering in silence and there’s nothing I can do about it!” She chocked back a sob.

Twilight put her arm around Fluttershy and gently rubbed her arm to comfort her, she allowed Fluttershy the time to calm herself before Fluttershy continued.

“And I was wondering…would you send a scroll to Princess Celestia? To see if she can help?” Fluttershy asked.

Twilight sighed and stroked her chin.

“I don’t think they can Fluttershy, not that she wouldn’t want to help because of course she would want to help you. But I’m guessing she would say that you need to be patient and wait for Discord to open up to you, he needs to truly trust you one hundred per cent if he is truly to be reformed enough.”

“But he is reformed though…” Fluttershy whispered.

“If he was Fluttershy…that ring would come off wouldn’t it.” Twilight replied stroking Fluttershy’s back. “You need to give these things time.”

Fluttershy knew Twilight was right, if she was going to prove herself to Celestia and to Discord she would have to be more patient. It would be tough to see the one she loved go through this pain with no way to truly vent it out, but she knew it would be worth it in the long run.

“I know Twilight…thank you.” Fluttershy smiled at her.

“It’s what friends are for.” Twilight hugged her.

Fluttershy said her goodbyes and thanked her once more; she headed back through the town thoughts raced through her mind. She wanted to help Discord but didn’t want to push him into telling her what was wrong, it was at that moment she had an idea. What if she told him how she felt, would that be enough for him to understand he could tell her anything? She decided that when Discord got home that evening she was going to make him a nice dinner, settle down with him in the living room and open her heart to him and take the risk.

As she came out of her thoughts she found herself outside of her home, she opened the door and went inside taking a seat in her armchair. She sighed to herself trying to figure out just how to exactly tell Discord and felt her eyes growing weary from the lack of rest and slowly drifted off to sleep.

“So come on Silver, why haven’t you asked her yet?” Red insisted.

“Asked her what?” Discord replied.

Red gave him a deadpanned look as he sipped his coffee.

“Don’t play dumb with me, you have feelings for Fluttershy.” Red grinned.

Discord remained silently as he sipped his coffee and looked away, this only served to make Red’s grin bigger.

“I knew it!” He chuckled as he slapped the table triumphantly. “So when you going to tell her?”

“I…don’t know…I mean sure I like her she’s a great friend but…” Discord sighed. “The last woman I loved well….it didn’t end well.”

“Come on man, we’ve all had that happen to ourselves at one point in our lives. Heck me and Applejack dated for a while.” Red shrugged.

“Really? You and her?” Discord asked raising his eyebrow.

“Yeah well…it didn’t last too long, we had a few dates and…other things but it wasn’t going anywhere and we decided to remain friends.”

“Interesting.” Discord started. “Must use that info later…” he muttered.

“Getting back on track, you should tell her how you feel Silver.” Red continued.

“I know I know but…there are things I need to be sure of first…with myself.”

Discord gave Red a look and Red understood it as a sign of ‘please don’t ask’ and nodded, respecting his request and finished his coffee.

“Well I’d best be getting back to work then, same time tomorrow?” Red grunted as he got up.

“Alright take care Red, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Discord got up and made his way to Fluttershy’s house, he sighed as he began to race thoughts through is mind, Red did have a point. He did have some feelings for Fluttershy, but he didn’t know exactly how he felt, did he just have a crush on her? Did her love her? He wasn’t sure; his past kept coming up each time he tried to think about his feelings for Fluttershy and it drove him to the brink of despair, he let out a groan of frustration as he crossed over the bridge that led out of the town.

The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end suddenly as Discord crossed past the border of the forest, he stopped and squinted into the trees again and saw something move, growling he clenched his fist and slowly advanced to the edge of the forest. He stopped when he heard the sounds of hushed whispers and the sudden sound of wings taking off; Discord stood still waiting for any other sound.

A few minutes passed and no other sounds could be heard other than the usual sounds of the forest, cautiously Discord backed up and turned around heading to Fluttershy’s house.

Fluttershy let out a sigh of happiness as she exited the shower, grabbing her towel and humming to herself as she wrapped it around her body. She picked a second towel up and wrapped her hair up in it before exiting the bathroom, as she left accompanied by the steam from her hot shower and she entered her bed room walking over to her drawers to look for some clothes. She was going to choose a special outfit to help her when she would tell Discord that evening how she felt, as she picked up a dress she heard the door suddenly close.

She let out a gasp and spun around on the spot to see Discord, he was wearing nothing but a pair of loose trousers. He stood there leaning on the wall smirking at her with his arms crossed; he slowly started to walk over to her with a low purr rumbling from his chest.

“D-Discord what are y-you doing?” She stuttered with a blush.

“Oh nothing really…thought I’d come by and let you know that…well…I know.” He chuckled.

“K-know what?” She asked.

He stopped as he came face to face with her and leant down slightly, his face inches away from hers. She felt her heart beginning to beat faster and faster as her breathing became rapid; her chest began to tighten as she felt his breath gently flow onto her face.

“That….” He whispered leaning closer to her head. “You…” He purred into her ear. “Love me…”

Fluttershy’s face went bright red as her eyes widened; her legs began to quiver as her stomach felt as if it was tying itself in knots.

“You see Fluttershy…the thing is.” Discord purred into her ear. “I…love you too.” He smiled pulling his head back.

Fluttershy stared at him her eyes wide, she felt her eyes tearing up slightly and her lip began to quiver. Without warning she threw herself at him wrapping her arms around his neck and locking her lips with his, the force of it sent Discord stumbling backwards onto her bed and he wrapped his arms around her waist as he rolled his tongue with hers. Fluttershy was in utter bliss as her hands began to ram over his body, she moaned into his mouth as his hands explored her switching from her neck to her lower back. She broke the kiss and let out a gasp as his hands firmly grasped her ass and she blushed looking down at him, he looked back up at her panting softly staring into her eyes waiting for her approval.

“It was just another dream…” She said with a blush.

Angel poked her stomach again to get her attention and tapped his leg once more, Fluttershy let out a gasp in realisation.

“Oh my goodness I haven’t given you or the animals their lunches!”

She quickly stood up sending Angel to the floor with a thud as she quickly dashed into the kitchen to make their food. She screeched to a halt seeing Discord standing in front of the oven humming happily to himself, she went bright red and made a squeak sound causing him to turn around.

“Evening Fluttershy, you hungry?”

“O-oh hello D-Discord…wait did y-you say evening?” She replied.

“I did I-“

“Oh my goodness I haven’t fed my animals yet!” Fluttershy interrupted in a panic.

“Fluttershy relax.” Discord smiled “I got home and found you peacefully asleep so I didn’t disturb you, me and Angel fed the animals and I spent a couple hours reading some books before deciding to make dinner for us.”

Fluttershy let out a sigh of relief and smiled at him, Discord smiled back before rubbing the back of his head nervously.
”I also kinda need to talk to you about something…”

Fluttershy’s blush deepened as her heart skipped a beat, had she heard that right? Could he possibly be saying he wanted to tell her how he felt? She couldn’t believe what she had heard and struggled to find her words.

“O-oh ok…w-well I have something I want to tell you too…Discord.” She replied nervously.

“Shall we have dinner first?” Discord suggested.

“T-that sounds lovely.” Fluttershy smiled.

The two settled into their dinners happily, Discord had cooked a rice dish in a sauce with assorted vegetables and herbs and it tasted wonderful. Fluttershy insisted on doing the washing up and they both soon found themselves in the sitting room cuddled up on the sofa enjoying each other’s company, they sat in silence for a while waiting for the other to say something. Fluttershy was the first to speak up.

“Look D-Discord…I need to-“

“I’d like…to say what I need to first…if that’s ok with you Fluttershy.” Discord interrupted.

“O-ok…” Fluttershy gulped. “What about?”

Discord sighed and took a deep breath; he was ready to trust someone with his past.

“It’s about who I was…what happened to me in the past.”

Fluttershy stormed though the town quickly, her fists were clenched and she was breathing rapidly with anger. She approached the door to the library and began to bang her fist against the door hard; she saw the lights turn on and stopped hearing the sounds of footsteps approaching the door.

“The library is closed!” She heard Twilight shout and open the door. “Fluttershy? What are you doing here? Where’s Silver”

“He's sleeping, I’m sorry Twilight.” She tried to say as calmly as she could. “But this is important.”

“What’s so important you have to come round at this time of night?” She asked with a yawn.

“I need Spike to send a scroll to Princess Celestia immediately; I need to speak with her.”

Spike grumbled as he came down the stairs in his purple pyjamas rubbing his eye, he let out a yawn and blinked.

“Fluttershy?” He mumbled.

“What’s so urgent it can’t wait till morning?” Twilight asked ignoring that Spike had come downstairs.

“I need to have a word with her about Discord’s past….” Fluttershy replied sternly, her fists shaking slightly.
