Chapter 16: "Hi, my is...
Previous ChapterNext ChapterI told her of the dream. Every excruciating detail, form the car ride and the walk, to the camp and...the cave. I lent back in my seat on the couch and furrowed my brow at the thought. I felt like my mind was going to get to me long before old bones and robe.
"So, you felt scared at the sight of all this." Twilight asked.
"...I guess that's a little obvious. Yeah." I said looking off.
"And, just what was it that you were so scared about?" She asked keeping the the lame therapist role.
"The fact I was going to die?" I decided. I pondered my own answer.
"Hmm, I think I may just understand your impulse." She stated.
"Oh, and that would be?" I asked with a raised brow. "I don't think I like where this may be going."
"You can't stand to lose what you care about." She went on.
I let her answer set in for minute. It made sense to a lot of it. The last thing I saw was Twilight...die.
"That's why you came back. You generally cared and wanted to help."
"I guess so." I said feeling like an idiot for not realizing it myself. Then again I don't understand any of the shit I feel so I probably wouldn't anyway.
"You aren't just some pent up ball of anger, you care for those you hold dear." She said looking over to me with a smile.
"Alright, enough of this inward journey bullshit." I said getting off the couch. I looked down at the time on the cable box on the TV. 4:30.
She only looked up at me still smiling at her results. "You amaze me at how much you hide."
"You hungry?" I asked tossing my jacket on the couch.
"Neither of us have eaten since yesterday. Nourishment would be nice." She said as she got up from the couch. She looked down at the stack of books she pulled off the shelf. "I'll get to those later."
I opened the door and walked out onto the porch and through Jeremy's lawn. Twilight walked out followed through up to Jeremy's door. When she stepped up to I knocked on the door.
"Why are we here?" She asked.
"Sunday, family dinner." I answered looking off.
"Family?" She said looking up to me.
"Neighbors, friends, close enough. Around here, were all like family." I said motioning my arm toward the houses around us. "When this is all you have...you learn to love it."
"You don't have anything else?"
I looked down to her for a moment and let all the life come back to memories. "My parents split when I was eight. My mom took my brother and my dad took me. When I was seventeen, I hitchhiked all the way down here just so I could see them. The last time I saw my brother he was one, he didn't know who I was. And my mom, she thought I was just some lost kid."
My words sunk in and I sat down on the porch. I thought of all the anger and sadness I felt when my said "May I ask just who you may be?". I stared at my old scuffed shoes and thought about how I just walked off dumbstruck.
"I don't know how many times I've had to just walk away and ignore things."
"Running doesn't solve anything."
"What else is there? My own mother didn't know who I was. My whole life was just one big fuck up." I snapped at her. "I had nothing, I came all the way down here just for nothing."
"Then what?"
" I went from place to place, did odd jobs, lived how I could. I was twenty before I finally made it up to here. The house was abandoned and I hunkered down and kept doing what I did. I lived alone, ate when I could and earned what I could."
"What changed that?" She asked sitting down next to me.
"I found them, the brothers. They became the closest thing to a family I had. I worked my way up the group, I fought tooth and nail, I did things that made me hate myself. But I made money off it and that's all I really cared about. It took me two years to make enough to actually buy the house."
Twilight stayed silent. I looked over to her and she had her arms wrapped around her legs.
"I met these people and they welcomed me." I chuckled. "They welcomed me and help me to my feet when I got knocked down. I made my friends and shit happens. Now that the group's dissolved they're all I really had left."
"So they became your family?" She asked standing up.
"Basically," I said getting up too. "I still miss my blood and I hope I can make things change."
"Sounds like you have a lot of work to do." She said looking to the door.
"Your damn right I do. Now listen. While were here, don't say anything about Equestria and ponies and magic and all that shit. Alright?"
She nodded and I knocked on the door again. I small Hispanic woman opened the door. "Oh! Hello James, its nice to see you see you again. Come in, dinner is almost ready. And I see you brought someone, how lovely." She said stepping back.
"You too Ms.Hernandez, This is Twilight." I said introducing her.
"Hello"
"Ah, its nice to meet you Twilight." She said motioning for us to come in.
Twilight walked through the door first and and I followed only to be pulled aside by Jeremy's mother.
"She's a lovely girl, I have a good feeling about her James."
"Yeah you and me too." I said stepping through the living room and into the kitchen.
Twilight stood near the table waiting.
"Hey Twi, how 'bout you help Ms.Hernandez here with dinner." I said.
"That would nice, Oh and James," She said Jeremy's mom said looking over to me. "They're in the backyard."
I nodded and walked through the family room and out into the backyard. I took a few steps from the door and turned around and looked up to see Jeremy and Justin sitting on the roof.
"Wassup man." Justin called down.
"Yo Its my Écossaise homme principale! How's it hangin' bro?" Jeremy called down.
"Fine, you?" I asked walking over to the low chimney and started to climb up.
"Oh you know. Smoked some shit, sweeped some floors there."
I grabbed onto the edge of the roof and hoisted myself up with a grunt. "That's nice."
Justin dug through the cooler they brought up and handed me an open bottle of sierra. I grabbed it and took a long drink.
"So you over that shit from earlier?" Justin asked.
I was still drinking and responded with an extended middle finger.
"I thought so." Justin said taking a seat next to Jeremy.
"Hey man, how is she?" Jeremy asked.
I swallowed. "Who?"
"You know, that bitch thats been following you 'round." Jeremy with a grin.
"Yeah man, don't act like we don't know what's going on." Justin said taking a long drag on a roach.
"I ain't acting, I don't know what the fuck your referring to."
"How does she fuck man?" Justin asked looking attentively at me.
"I don't know, I haven't done anything with her." I said uncertain for myself.
"Oh come on. Don't even try to say nothin's happening. I saw shit myself yesterday." Jeremy boasted.
"Man you didn't see shit." I said sitting down.
"So I didn't see her on the couch with her headlights flashin'?"
"Shut the fuck up." I took another drink and finished it. "That wasn't shit and I mean it, now drop it."
"Whatever."
Twilight walked out the back door. "Boys! It's...ready." She said looking around.
Justin looked down to her. "She's got ass" He said with a cheeky grin.
"Don't I know." I muttered.
"HA! I knew you tapped that." Justin yelled.
Twilight turned around to see us on the roof. "Why are you up there?"
"Don't worry about." I said. "Just go back in, were coming."
She walked back in and I whipped my empty bottle at Justin.
"OW, What the fuck man?"
