Chapter 32: Breaking news

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

I sat on my couch with Twilight reading.

Jonas braced himself and entered the memory which was torturing The Giver. He was in a confused, noisy, foul-smelling place. It was daylight, early morning, and the air was thick with smoke that hung, yellow and brown, above the ground. Around him, everywhere, far across the expanse of what seemed to be a field, lay groaning men. A wild-eyed horse, its bridle torn and dangling, trotted frantically through the mounds of men, tossing its head, whinnying in panic. It stumbled, finally, then fell, and did not rise. Jonas heard a voice next to him. "Water, " the voice said in a parched, croaking whisper.

My heart sunk. I knew this part all too well.

He turned his head toward the voice and looked into the half-closed eyes of a boy who seemed not much older than himself. Dirt streaked the boy's face and his matted blond hair. He lay sprawled, his gray uniform glistening with wet, fresh blood.

I felt a part of my nose twitch and my eyes felt wet. I could remember Huang in a similar way again. It hurt. I blinked away the wetness and closed the book.

"I really don't feel like reading Twilight. Can we please do something else?"

"Why, is something the matter?"

"No no, it's nothing. I just, I'm a little tired of reading."

She let out a sigh. "Alright"

I rubbed my temples and pushed the thought out my mind. "C'mon man, hold it together. Don't let it hold you down."
"Hey Twi, could you go into the bathroom and grab the aspirin from the medicine cabinet? My arm's starting to hurt."

She got up and walked toward the bathroom. I dug between the cushions for the remote and turned on the tv. The black screen lit up and was on the channel two news.

"And for the weekend, partially cloudy with a chance of some light rain. We're switching over to Diane, it appears we have some breaking news."

The view changed to a woman sitting at a desk. "Thank you Tom. This just in, reports of another violent killing in the south-eastern areas of Detroit have surfaced."

I turned down the volume and hunched forward trying to pay closer attention.

"This time the victims included at least six grown men in a clubhouse on the southern side of gratiot. The identities of the men have yet to be released. These killings are told to be similar to those that have been happening for the last few months. Many witnesses claim to have spotted a large caucasian male with dark hair leaving the areas wearing coveralls, work boots and a baseball cap and some form of mask as well as carrying around some sort of bag."

"I can't find anything." Twilight called from the bathroom.

"Uh, just keep looking." I answered back.

"Witnesses claim to have spotted a similar assailant leaving the premise clutching his arm. Hospitals are being checked for anyone with recently sustained injuries to the left arm. If anyone has any knowledge of who this person may be, please contact local authorities."

I changed the channel as Twilight walked back into the living room with a small white bottle.

"Here." She handed me the aspirin.

I took the bottle and poured out two tablets and popped them into my mouth. I swallowed and set the bottle on the floor. "Thanks."

She sat down. "So just what happened? How did you get hurt?" She asked lounging against me.

I thought quick. "I lost my footing on some steps on my way out and fell down them. Same how I messed up my nose. I didn't think it was anything to worry about so I just came back home."

"Oh, well, I hope you feel better." She held onto the arm and it ached.

"Hey Twi, I don't have to go to work tomorrow so do you wanna go out somewhere."

"Sure."
