Chapter 44: Wild wastes

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

I walked through the seemingly endless stretch of burned earth, never dropping or raising in pace. The Invisible sun beat down on me as I pushed on through the trek. My legs ached and strained, but I kept going without second thought. Marrow clung to my back quietly and likely asleep. The thought of finally getting back there and seeing her was all that kept me going. Even that hope that she was still okay was beginning to fleet.

I started to see things, flashes, minor images of her. Her face, her mark, her naked form. It was at least somewhat pleasurable, even though it wasn't real. I spotted something along the horizon; a dark spec. I continued toward it, sweat beading and rolling down my face. My mouth was unbearably dry and burned for liquid. I decided to heighten my pace, move faster, anything to shorten my time. I began to understand just how this was a part of hell.

The spec grew in time and I could just begin to see the outline of a town. "This must have been what marrow was talking about."

I dropped any thought of taking things slow and pacing myself. I started to run toward it, the movement of my shoulders woke Marrow. "What, What? What's happening?" He asked groggily.

"Town." I panted.

He looked in the direction we were headed. I kept running. I felt the heat sink in and burn. It nipped at my skin and made me only feel worse. My head felt the hottest. It was heavy and my hair was damp with sweat. I was just outside it. the town was right there, just a few feet away. My knees buckled and my legs pulled me down. My face meet with the sand-like ash of the ground and my eyes lulled. The last thing I could remember was Twilight's voice, her scream echoed in my head and I blacked out.

My eyes eased back open and I could just barely see someone. A woman holding a wet cloth to my forehead, her face was contorted and unfocused. Everything seems darker and eery. The sunglasses were gone, probably put away. I felt colder and I noticed my jacket was folded beside me. She could see me come to and reached for a glass. Her hand was behind my head and raised it to the glass of water. I drank and felt the cool water wash down my parched throat. I still couldn't believe this was just a dream. It all felt so real.

I cleared my throat and looked back to her. "Thanks."

"It's nothin' to thank me for, it was the right thing to do. Your the first person to come here in a while. And from what Marrow has told me, the first person to willingly come here."

Her voice was soft and kind. I looked around the room. It was darkly stained and empty.

"Where are my sunglasses?" I asked.

"I'll get them." She said walking off.

She came back after a minute and I placed them back onto the bridge of my nose. It all cleared and I could see her face. She was a young girl at most. The room focused and I could see it. It was well furnished and decorated. Velvet lined chairs and curtains, rosewood tables and hanging murals. There were beautiful woman around the room talking, drinking and a few looking over to me. I waved and they smiled back.

I turned my attention back to the young girl. "Where am I?"

"The old town of Dustcloud." She explained. "Right now your in the towns brothel."

"Brothel?" I looked at her with a mixture of confusion and wonder. "Wait, why would you be in a brothel?"

"I run it. The little demon you came here with: Marrow, he's an old friend."

"Marrow." I thought to myself. I looked down at my arm. The marking he had left still held there red glow. I looked back at her. "Where is he?"

"Outside."

I got up from the couch I had been laying on. "Thanks for all, you know."

"Like I said: it's nothing."

Grabbed my jacket from the table and walked toward the door. I heard a few snickers and looked around.

"What?" I asked.

"Um..." The young girl nodded down.

I looked to see that my pants and shoes were gone and that instead I had on socks and a rather tight pair of boxer-briefs.

"Aw son of a bitch."
