Chapter 45: Flying a flag
Previous ChapterNext Chapter"Could I get my pants back?" I asked with my hands hovering over myself.
"Alright, give me minute." She said walking off.
"Keep it together man, plenty of girls have seen you like this. Never a room full of them, but still a decent number. Just...just think about Twilight. Your comfortable with her seeing you like this and you the likewise her. Wait! No don't think about Twilight like that!" I did my best to keep cool and push thoughts like that out.
The girls all seemed to think it was funny for me to react like that.
The young girl came back with the folded jeans as well as my belt and sneakers and handed them to me. "I cleaned them up a bit."
"Thanks." I said slipping the jeans back on and fastened the belt. I sat back to on the couch and strapped the sneakers back to my feet. "I appreciate your help and I'll find someway to help back, but I have something to do."
A small smile came across her face. "I'm not so certain you'll be out of here so soon." She said in a matter of fact tone. "There's a decent distance before your out of here and a lot longer until you get where you're headed."
"Well shit. Sorry Twi. I hope you can hold out."
"May I ask of your name?" She said to me.
"James." I answered with and extended hand. "You?"
She took the hand and we shook. "Margaret."
"It's nice to know you. Now if you''ll excuse me, I have a little pain in the ass to talk to." I said getting up and starting for the door.
"When you're done, I would like to continue this."
"Got it." I said giving her a thumbs up with a turned back as I walked out the door.
I spotted Marrow sitting upfront looking off. He turned to me.
"So how you likin' this place Monkey?"
"It's alright, the people are better than I expected. A lot more human and caring."
"Well that's just it." He said. "You humans always try to help each other. Doesn't matter where you are or whats going on, it's just helping each other."
"Get used to it." Said dryly. "You deal with humans, you understand humans."
"Whatever now listen up, the walking shadow himself has quite a few of his lackeys spread out everywhere, including this town. He's a lot bigger a threat than you think and getting rid of him would weaken this place. I myself would only benefit from such. Now everyone in the shit hole would like to go back to living there lives. The only problem is: he's in the way. Now if we can rally up some support, then maybe, just maybe, you could kick his arse.
"And If I get rid of his little underling, I might just get some support." I jumped in.
"Exactly" He said nodding. "Go back and talk to the young lass in there. She may just know how to help."
"On it." I said walking back in.
She saw me come back and and was seated on the couch. On the table was a ceramic pot of tea and cups. She motioned for me to sit. I took the seat.
"I believe you understand what I would like to talk about now, correct?"
I nodded.
"Splendid. Then I assume we can move on to business? Marrow and I can see a lot of potential in you and neither of us have the strength or ability to deal with him. So we agreed you would do well. Marrow has told me about you and your actions in life. You seemed to have made quite the leader and are willing to fight. Do you think you could help and found the cause to stop him?"
I nodded again.
"Good. First you must win over the hearts and minds of this town. Dispatching one of his followers in a public scene may very well just do that."
I stood up from my seat. "Point me in the right direction and I'll take it from there."
A larger smile formed along her face. "Follow me then." She said as she set her cup down and rose from the seat.
I followed her outside and Marrow tagged along. We walked down the empty burned dirt road to a shop where a few larger men stood outside. One of them was antagonizing what I guessed was the owner.
"There." Margaret said. "Those are the people we need to get rid of."
I looked back to her. "Why are they people? I thought all the humans in this place acted like humans, not like that giant asshole."
"They're different." She explained. "They took offers and became henchmen to demons. They're no better than who they work for.
"If you say so." I said walking closer. "Hey you!"
They turned to me.
"Yeah you! Quit pickin' on these people or else!"
They laughed and the largest one walked toward me. "Oh yeah, and just what are you gonna do about it."
The marks floated to my hand and formed the hilt. "I'll make you." I said wryly.
"Oooh, scary. You've got a toy." He laughed.
My eyes narrowed and I glared at him.
"Alright tough guy, I'll let you take the first hit."
He was only twenty feet away. The guide bar extended. "Bad move." I said lowly.
The blade lit and I sprinted toward him.
"Wait, What the-"
He was cut off literally. I had swung and cut through him like nothing. The top half of him slid off and hit the ground limply, the bottom simply toppled in a small shower of blood.
The two smaller ones only feet away panicked. One stood frozen with fear, the other ran. I swung at the still one and where the top of his head had been now spurted blood as his tongue waggled and a gargle was made. The other half dropped to the ground. I pushed the majority of it down and watched as the last one ran. The sword fizzled out and the marks changed to the pistol. I aimed and fired. The red bolt flew through the air with amazing speed and struck his leg. Instead of simply going through or hitting and burning into him, it tore through his leg. A large section had been blown to bit's and the rest had flown off a few feet to scatter along the ground. He wailed out and pulled along the ground in a crawl, still trying to get away.
I walked toward him and as I reached him set my foot on his back weighing him down. The pistol changed back to the hilt and the blade shot out. I brought it down by his neck.
"Got something to say before your dead twice over?"
He only gave a whimper and a pained groan.
"No? Good." I said raising the green blade from his neck.
I lifted the hilt up upside down and plunged it down into his back. He screamed and it was silenced as I cut up and outward from his body and through his head. It was split through and blood poured out onto the blackened ground. I looked up to the small gathered crowd.
The hilt faded and I spoke out. "People of, uh, Dustcloud. I come to...bring freedom... to you and end...whatever his name's reign over you. What you say to a resistance? An ending of the suffering? Taking back blood for blood? What of you will join me in taking him down?"
I silently hoped that would work.
A man stepped forward. "I will."
Murmurs from the crowd arose and another man came forward. "I will."
Another came. "Me too."
One by one more people came forward and agreed. I looked back to Margaret. She held a wide, hopeful smile.
"Who shall we rally behind? What symbol do we show?" Someone asked.
"I will." I said. "I'll lead us. I'll take the charge and lead this group." I looked back to Margaret. I turned back to the crowd. "Hold on."
I walked back to her and Marrow.
"Can you help me with something?" I looked back at the crowd "I need something to write with and paper."
"I have something" A man said holding up a piece of vellum.
I walked to him and took it with a nod.
"I have a pen" Another called out.
I took that as well and quickly scribbled out a picture on it. I hurried back to Margaret. "Could you make this?" I asked. She nodded.
After some time she had finished with a large black cloth and had sewn the image into it. She gave it to me and I walked out to the growing crowd of people. I held up the flag for all to see and spoke them.
"I came to the underworld to take back what he took from me. I will not stop until his head is on a pike and I have her back
The crowd cheered and clapped.
"We will be known as 'Hells Twilight'." I said with a sense of pride and hope.
