Soaring Hearts

Rainbow was struggling to ignore the giggles her friends were giving off, seeing as how reacting would just make the situation worse. She was following Soarin into the room they were sharing, and the girls were taking the opportunity to make Rainbow feel upset about the situation. She could see the tips of Soarin's ears turning red with embarrassment. Rainbow felt heat rise to her cheeks, and it wasn't from embarrassment. As the doors to the other rooms closed, Rainbow could still hear the guffaws form her friends ringing in her ears and bouncing around in her brain. A low, feral growl began to emanate from her throat.

"Rainbow, no. It'll only encourage them." Rainbow turned to make a scathing reply but stopped as she became lost in those big green eyes that had captured her heart and soul. Rainbow had to stop herself from kissing him right then and there.

Soarin felt his heart migrate to his throat as he stared into those big, maroon eyes of hers. He forced himself to pull away from her captivating gaze. Oh, Rainbow, why must I love you so much. Soarin knew this was no ordinary puppy-love crush that would fade with time. He was hopelessly in love with the cyan mare and he knew it. He had hoped at first that he wasn't just a 'friend' to her and that he meant something more. But after two months of awkward encounters with the mare, he had realized that that was not so.

"Rainbow, I... I know that this is completely out of the blue and all, but... am I just a friend to you?" Rainbow's brain went into overdrive as panic set in. Taking a deep breath, she calmed herself and said the most painful set of words she had ever said.

"Of course, why would you be anything else? It's not like we're dating.." The words cut through Soarin like a knife. He was nothing but... a friend. The love of his life thought he was just a FRIEND. No, it couldn't be, I... I must have, um... misheard her. Yeah, that's it. I... I. Soarin sighed and nodded, accepting the answer. Rainbow felt horrible at saying those words but at least he took the answer without being hurt.

"Maybe... maybe we should go to bed." Rainbow nodded in agreement and climbed onto the single bed. Soarin walked over to the opposite side and lay with his back to Rainbow. Nether were looking forward to the week ahead of them at all.

The week went by in a blur, Rainbow constantly singing the same song in her head to calm herself. However, Soarin was doing the same thing with the same song.

Rainbow sighed as the day drew to a close. Tomorrow would be the last day they spent here before she and her friends left tomorrow night. She trotted towards the room she shared with Soarin. When she got there, she was shocked to see Soarin sitting by the window, looking out over Canterlot. Rainbow walked over to him, her hooves making a light clopping sound as she walked over to Soarin. Sitting beside him, she wondered if he knew she was even there. If he did he gave no signs of acknowledging her. rainbow sat beside him in silence for a while. It could have been minutes or hours, Rainbow didn't know. And Rainbow didn't care as she sat, enjoying the silence.

"Rainbow," The rainbow-manned mare jumped as Soarin spoke to her without turning his head, "were you being honest when you said we were just friends?" Rainbow nodded slowly while murmuring 'yes'. Soarin twitched, pain clearly visible in his eyes. He sighed, got to his hooves and turned, muttering an okay.

Rainbow could clearly see that her words had caused him pain though she couldn't get why. Concerned for her friend, she spoke up to the now hurting stallion.

"Hey, are you okay, Soarin?" Soarin gave a barely convincing nod. Rainbow felt suspicion bloom in her heart at his weird behavior. Deciding to ask him about it in the morning, Rainbow walked over to the bed and crawled in. As she pressed her back to Soarin's she felt him flinch. Sighing, Rainbow nestled into the blankets and let sleep overcome her.

Soarin's eyes fluttered open and he lifted his head up in shock. He was in the palace where the royal wedding and Twilight's coronation had taken place. Applejack was shaking his shoulder with a glare plastered on her face. The confused stallion looked up to see Thunderlane, a weather pony from Ponyville, standing beside Celestia, a nervous smile plastered on his face.

"And Here comes the bride. Everypony rise." Celestia's voice caused every pony present, even himself, to stand. Soarin turned and felt his heart skip a beat. Rainbow was making her way down the isle toward Celestia and Thunderlane. She was dressed in a delicate, pale blue, silk dress covered in light blue sapphires. His breath hitched in pain as he watched the marriage. He kept thinking, *no, Rainbow, no. Then he saw Luna staring at him. Her horn glowed and everything disappeared in a flash of blue. Soarin collapsed and started to sob. He felt a comforting hoof on his head and looked up to see the blue Alicorn looking down at him. He curled up, the gentle strokes of Luna's hoof on his back calming him.*

"I... I don't h... how t...to tell Rainbow I... I l...l... love her." Luna gently touched her horn to his forehead and the whiteness faded to black with Luna whispering in his ear, "You'll know."
