Deprivation

by Wingless
Many think that being deprived of anything is a horrible thing. For some, it's the only thing in life that matters.

The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make a heaven of Hell, a hell of Heaven.
—John Milton from "Paradise Lost"—

Dan. He's the man. At least to others, he is. In public he dons his friendly facade and with a warm greeting and warm smile he knows how to brighten anyone's day. Unfortunately he is unable to use his emotionally uplifting powers on himself, receding into his quiet bubble at the end of each day. There he can be away from the noise of the babbling masses, the choking smoke of the thousands of vehicles, and the cold stares of the people who want nothing more than to be left to themselves.

He's more than happy to give it to them. The alone time, that is. But even the brief respites from the world and his few friends aren't enough. Now, he will be given the power to brighten even his own day, while still brightening others' day.

And he doesn't even need to leave his apartment.
