Chapters A sharp throbbing pain stung my abdomen as to I came to consciousness. My vision blurred and hearing suppressed made me blind to the rest of the world. I began to regain feeling in my body as I noticed I had been tied down to a mattress. Leather straps and buckles bound me, and except for some movement in my hands I was completely immobile. After more closely analyzing my situation I began to think. Where am I, how did I get here, and why am I tied down. As I ponder this I begin to hear muffled voices approaching the door. Instinctively I fall back and pretend to be asleep. As I hear the door open a pool of sweat begins to form on my forehead. I try and control my fear so they may not notice my being awake. I closely listen to the now clear conversation between the two people. One of them sounded like a man and rather young at that, the other was female and had a very gentle tone. I listen. “I am deeply sorry I did not contact you earlier princess, I just had no idea what to do.”
“It is ok doctor you did the right thing bringing him here.”
“What in Equestria is it, I mean in my years as a medical doctor I have never seen or even heard of such a creature.”
“I am sorry to disappoint you doctor, but I am as curious of this being as you.”
After hearing this a whole new array of inquiries flood my brain. What do they mean what am I, who is this princess, and where is Equestria? The temptations overwhelm me as a try and sneak a look at the mysterious figures. I slowly squint my left eye to give me a basic image of the surrounding room. After more closely scanning the environment I find that I am is some kind of hospital. After looking around a bit I try and focus on the people talking in the room. I slightly adjust my line of sight so I have a clearer picture of them. I see two figures but they are still too blurred to make out. I open my eyelids ever so slightly more. Although what I see causes my eyes to bolt open in shock. Because standing in front of me are not any types of people. No, standing in front of me where two horses. One grey with a black mane and wearing a lab coat, the other one slightly larger was white with a flowing rainbow mane. Still having my eyes wide open in awe they quickly become knowledgeable of my consciousness. The colt instantly yells. “Quick nurse get me a sedative!” It is not long after I feel a small pinch in my right arm. I begin to doze off into sleep.
1 Week Earlier
“All systems online” An electronic voice echoed through the vessel Ithaca. “Primary objective located, proceeding. Primary objective, re-animation of officer designation Robert (codename: RJ) Bellitto from cryo-stasis for mission briefing. Administering heating panels and releasing cooling vents now.” A blast of cold air burst from the base of casket. A small radiant light began to form inside the chamber. The condensation which covered the exterior of the capsule began to melt away, giving visual of the metallic figure inside. “Activating Nano-suit 1-0-0’s basic operating and biological systems” a small blue light formed in the crevices of the suit. The light started at the base and slowly moved to the temple. “Opening casket number 3.” The glass panel flung open followed by a small spray of condensation and a burst of heat. The figure inside remained stolid for a moment them came to life. It slowly moved forward out of the casket followed by a series of gags and coughing fits.
“You mustn’t take things so quickly captain, you have been in stasis for almost three years." I look up to see the small spherical AI module staring at me. My insides feel as though I had been kicked in the chest by a bull or trampled by a stampede of cattle. I eventually manage to exit the cryo-pod and make my way to the nearest chair. “I presume sir you are aware of the reason for your awakening.”
“Not really, I thought I wasn’t supposed to be woken up until we had reached Jupiter.”
“I am aware, but a sudden turn of events has caused a boost in our schedule. Due to this you must be briefed on your mission before re-entering cryo-sleep.”
“Alright then, let’s get started.”
“I presume you are aware of the Ithaca’s unique qualities.”
“U.S Air Force deep space vessel Ithaca is equipped with a state of the art propulsion system called the gravity drive, which is able to literally bend the fabric of space and time in order to achieve light speed. There is only one other ship in existence equipped with this technology but its location is unknown except to a select few.”
“Good to see you were paying attention. Now here is your briefing. This voyage is the first official field test of the gravity drive. Your mission, simple enough, is to travel a minimum safe distance from any civilized inter-planetary colony in the system, and when prepared fire the gravity drive. The calculations if correct should have the gravity drive take us directly to outpost 17B which is orbiting one of the moons of Saturn. Any questions”
“Yea um… what do you mean if the calculations are correct?”
“There is always the possibility in a mission like this for error. I simply took that probability however slim and included that variable in the equation.”
“Look robot, I did not sign up for any suicide mission. I was promised a ride home.”
“There is no need to worry, I assure you. The percentage rate of the mission being a failure is less than 5%.”
“So it is possible we will fail and be sucked into an inter-dimensional pit of darkness.” I say rather nervously.
“Like I said it is highly unlikely.”
“But possible.” The AI hesitated.
“Yes.” I pondered for several moments before responding.
“Well I guess it is too late to be having second thoughts now. Is that all on the briefing?”
“Yes sir. I do believe that you are now fully informed on your duty aboard this vessel. You may now re-enter cryo-sleep.”
I shake my head in agreement as I gradually walk back toward to capsule. I step inside locking the boots of my Nano-suit in the braces on the base of the pod. I lay back as the tubular glass panel slowly lowers down until it is parallel to my face. I take a deep breath and let the cold air fill my lungs as I lose consciousness. This would be my last memory aboard the Ithaca.
Chapter 1: Comfort in Captivity
“Wake up, wake up.” A soothing gentle voice caused me to slowly regain consciousness. My mind was still a blur of thoughts and unsure memories. My body was still strapped to the hospital bed, unable to move. I look over and see a large bandage on the upper section of my right arm, where the nurse injected me with the sedative. Even still, a deep haze clouded my senses. As I tried to regain control of myself, a realization hit me. I was not the only one in the room. A white mare, the same one from before, was standing at the foot of the bed. She was just staring at me, as I was to her. It seemed we were equally curious of each other. After a few moments of this, she was the first to speak. “Hello, how are you doing?” The majestic figure asks rather timidly. No sounds came from my bewildered form. “Can you understand me?” At this point, my catatonic state was broken, and my brain formulates a response.
“Yes, I can understand you.” The mare stepped back slightly shocked to hear my voice, but she did not seem too surprised.
"Well, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Princess Celestia, ruler of the land you find yourself in. May I ask your name?"
“My name is Robert; I am a captain of the United States Space Navy, and the ranking officer of the vessel Ithaca.”
“You say you are a captain, of some form of spacecraft?” Celestia asks confusedly.
“Yes, that is correct.”
“Well that explains the wreckage.” My eyes once again bolt open.
“What wreckage.” I say rather fiercely.
“That is where my student, Twilight Sparkle, and her friends found you. You were locked in some kind of container stuck in the ground, there where large masses of metal and scrap surrounding the area.” I begin to try and piece together the information I have so far. She says I was locked in a container when they found me, so I was still in cryo when I was transported here. That explains the lack of memory, but how did I even get here. I am obviously no longer in my own solar system anymore. Am I even in the same galaxy? I mean we have mapped out and examined almost all planetary systems in the Milky Way, and found no signs of sentient life let alone life like this. I mean these things go against all laws of evolution. How did this place come to be? I had now been silent for a minute. The princess attempts to regain my attention with a slight grunt. “Ah hem.” I turn to her once again.
“Where is my ship?” I say angrily.
“I am not sure you understand, there was no ship when we found you. There was only-.”
“I don't care, you will take me to my vessel immediately!”
“I am afraid I cannot yet allow you to leave.”
“Why!?” I yell.
“The doctors and I are not yet sure it would be safe. We don’t even know what you are. If you could calm down and give us some more information-”
“No, fuck that! I am not saying a god damned word until you take me to my ship." Celestia was about to re-address her previous statement before I continued. "OR what's left of it!"
“Princess, with all do respect, I think we should continue this another time. Anyway we need to do another check on his vitals.” Another voice emanates from the door. The second figure gestures for her to leave the room.
“*sigh* Very well." Celestia turns to me. "I am sorry to leave so abruptly, but I hope we can have another conversation soon, one in a more... comfortable setting. I apologize for leaving you with questions unanswered, but if you cooperate I will be sure to aid you best I can. Goodbye, Captain.” The mare lowers her head which is probably the equivalent of a wave for them. She exits the room as the other pony enters.
The stallion is dressed in a silk lab coat, indicating his stats as a doctor. The colt carts in a small tray of assorted examination tools before trotting over to the sink facing away from me. As his line of sight relinquishes his view of the bed, I turn to the small tray he had pulled so near. The items on the tray mostly consisted of knives and scalpels. If I can reach that tray I might be able to cut through these damned straps! My hand lightly moves side to side, slowly sliding further down through the restrains. Stretching out with my fingers I tap on the end of the tray, trying to grab hold. I do not know how much longer the colt will be at the sink. Finally, I lightly grasp the cart and bring is closer to my bedside. Grabbing one of the razors on the tray I proceed to cut at the belt. Careful not to slice my arm, I simply make a trench in the loop. Then using my natural strength I break the bond. Now with a free arm, I lean over to cut free my remaining wrist. Following this process with both legs my entire body is now free.
Glancing to the doctor, I see he has already completed his task and started his return to my bedside. Quick as a bullet, I sprint to his unknowing form. Swiftly reaching around his head, my palms cover his mouth and nose. He struggles trying to get free from my grasp. Kicking in lashing out the desperate pony manages to knock around several of the toiletries on the counter. The process goes on for several moments before he goes unconscious from lack of air. I reach for the data port on my Nano-suit pressing the audio command speaker. I quietly voice my command into the console.
“Activate all basic and biological systems. Charge all propulsion and weapon systems.” A luminescent blue light forms at my feet and moves up. The wave of bionic armor builds around my unprotected body. Nanites individually coordinating each movement and placement. A top my skull a grid hologram lights up and journeys around my head. Once complete the light grid encloses, shrouding my vision with a blue hue. A moment later the transparent barrier is now a sealed helmet. Seemingly appearing out of nowhere.
“All requested systems are now online.” the computer voices. I locate and open a window that is at the far side of the room. I swiftly advance towards the opening.
“Computer, prepare anti-grav platforms for long distance flight." A neon orange light forms on the underside of my boots. At this time I am hanging on the outside of the window.
“Sir anti-gravity repulsors are now fully charged for long distance travel.” I lean forward and drop out the window.
“Fire repulsors.” A loud sonic boom followed by a boost in speed engulfs me. As I move forward my vision drifts back to where I have been being held captive. I see a large city hanging off the edge of a mountain range. A large gilded castle stands out amongst the rest of the buildings. I turn my head back forward. “Alright, now to find my ship.”
Chapter 2: A Friend in Need
“Computer, conduct a wide variety scan of all the surrounding area for vessel designation Ithaca.”
“Yes sir beginning scan now.” The computer’s response was swiftly followed by a flashing red light on the upper section of my heads up display.
“Warning, Warning, incoming energy based projectile!”
“What! How did they.” My sentence was quickly interrupted by a purple luminescent mass passing directly by me on my left side. “Jesus Christ what the hell is that!”
“Locating source now… source located.”
“Bring the image up on my visor.” A small window appeared on my HUD; in the picture stood large white unicorn with a blue and turquoise mane. “How the hell is he the source?”
“It would appear the energy pulses are emanating from his horn.”
“This just keeps getting better and better.” I say sarcastically.
“Sir, multiple energy surges approaching us from the rear.”
“Map out a route of evasion, I don’t want to see what will happen if one of these hits us.”
“Processing… uploading route now.”
“Alright.” I swiftly begin moving left and right evading all the passing projectiles.”
“Sir.”
“What now?”
“I am detecting some form of barrier surrounding the circumference of the city.”
“What do you mean I don’t see anything?”
“Maybe this will help. Switching visor mode to infrared.” A green line formed on the peak of the screen and lowered down until my entire visor was laced with the color. I then saw the barrier. An immense red spectrum fills the area of the visor.
“What the hell. Computer reverse all repulsors.”
“We are moving at too high a velocity to change course.”
“What is the estimated time to impact.”
“Two seconds.”
“Oh great.” As I pass through the barrier a surge of electrical energy passes through my suit.
“Error, error, all systems failing, all systems failing!” The voice of the AI slowly distorts as we exit the barrier. I begin to slow, looking down I notice the anti-grav panels dimming.
“Uh-oh that can’t be good.” I come to a complete halt before going into free fall. I feel a large pressure on my chest from the air building up under my body. I frantically try and reach over to the data port on my arm in an attempt to re-activate the on board AI. I almost reach the port until a sudden burst of air causes my arm to be blown back into a locked position. As I break through the cloud barrier I begin to see the surface growing nearer and nearer. I try and reach the data port once again but the effort continues to be in vein. I close my eyes awaiting the end. Suddenly I feel something bulldoze into my side. I open my eyes to discover I am hovering no more than 10 feet off the ground. I look to my left and see a light blue Pegasus holding me by my waist struggling to compensate for my added weight. She begins to lower me down gut her grip loosens and I fall to the ground. I gasp for air after the impact. I lay there for a few moments before trying to pick myself up. I begin to stumble but I was stopped before I could fall. I stand up taking a deep breath as erected. I look down to see the same Pegasus pony looking up at me with wide eyes.
“Uh… um…sorry for ah dropping you” the pony stutters. I respond.
“You have nothing to be sorry for, you saved me.” The mare takes a couple steps back surprised to hear me speak.
“What is your name?” I ask.
“My name is um…Rainbow Dash. Wow, so you can speak Equestrian.” I'm guessing that Equestrian is their name for the English language. I guess everything can't be a parallel.
"I'm sorry if a scared you but-"
“I am not afraid! Its just that you ...startled me a bit, yea. So you're the creature Twilight found in the Everfree. You're taller that she said you were." The Rainbow maned pegasus has a surprised look on her face as I stand to my full height. It was pretty comical to see a large I was in proportion to these ponies.
"I... believe so, and... wait, did you say Twilight?"
"Yea, why?"
"Nothing, just wondering."
"Okaaay, wait why are you out of the city anyway. Did the princess release you or something?"
"No... not exactly."
"Then what happened, why were you falling from Canterlot?"
"I'm sorry, but I really don't feel like talking about that right now. Also ! need to get moving-" I begin to walk forward, but I am halted by a sudden sharp pain in my lower back."ARGH!” I yell in pain.
“What is wrong?!” Rainbow Dash voices her concern.
“My back, argh!” I keel over in pain.
“Don’t worry I will take you to Twilight, she will know what to do!”
"Okay, just hurry!"
“Alright, hold on!” The mare grabs the underside of my upper arms and lifts me into the air. I hear her gasping for air knowing she is having trouble supporting the weight. As we continue to move forward I begin to see something in the distance. As we advance the image becomes clearer. We are approaching a small town. As we pass I notice a sign at the entrance 'WELCOME TO PONYVILLE'. Well at least I know where I am now . Rainbow Dash still struggling to support my weight drops down lower into the street, we are now visible to the ponies wandering around the town. As we pass by I hear a series of gasps and murmurs. We continue down the street until we reach a large hollow tree with windows and a door. Rainbow gently lays me down on the stoop as she knocks on the door and yells for Twilight.
“Twilight, Twilight get out here I need you now!” I hear what sounds like clopping hooves approach the front of the tree until I see the door fling open.
“Rainbow Dash what is so important, I am trying to practice a new spell with Spike and I need to concentrate!” Rainbow’s eyes shift to my position. Twilight notices this and begins to do the same. I hear her gasp and stumble backward crashing into a table standing near the door.
“Dear Celestia, is that the thing we found in that crater in the Everfree forest.”
“Hey this thing has a name!” I say with a snide attitude.
“Did he just talk, he just talked.” This only causes her to continue stumbling about the tree house.
“Twilight don’t panic he is perfectly safe. I just brought him here because he hurt his back when he was falling from outside the barrier at Canterlot. I was wondering if you could use your magic to help him.
“Why was he outside the barrier I thought the princess had taken him to the Canterlot Medical Center.”
“I don’t know, Twilight, I was just on weather duty outside the city and saw him falling after he passed through the protective barrier. I rushed over and caught him before he hit the ground.”
“Ok, ok so how did he hurt his back?”
“I am not sure we were talking and he just fell over and started yelling.” At this point I try to get up only to be halted by a surge of pain than ran up my spinal cord.
“ARGH, GOD”
“Don’t try to move you are hurt.”
“Ya think?”
“Alright bring him inside I will see what I can do.”
Chapter 3: Benefit of the Doubt
Rainbow Dash slowly walks over to my position and lowers her head under my arm. Twilight does the same on the opposite side of my body. They begin to count down.
“3, 2, 1!”
The two ponies lift with all their strength attempting to support my weight. They start forward and drag me into the house. I am laid against a stump protruding from the center of the room. The two ponies begin to try and catch their breath. Now that my body is supported I begin to look around the hollow tree.
All I see are dozens of shelves filled to capacity with hundreds of books. I start to ponder the amount of information I could find on their culture, maybe get a clearer understanding on how these things came to be here. My fantasizing is cut short by a distraught purple unicorn attempting to gain my attention. Still keeping a moderate distance from me Twilight begins to speak.
“So um…what is your name?” Twilight asks rather nervously.
“My name is RJ Bellitto.” I say in a calm tone.
“What a strange name.” Twilight’s face flourishes with fascination.
“You say you hurt your back, let me see what I can do.” I stop Twilight before she can advance.
“That is not necessary.”
Twilight begins to look confused. I reach for the console on my left arm and press down on the audio command interface. I slowly move the speaker closer to my face and voice my command followed by a violent coughing fit. Twilight and Rainbow Dash begin to walk towards me, but I signal them to stop.
“Voice command invalid,” the computer responds.
The two ponies step back wondering who had just spoken.
“It is okay it is just the suits artificial intelligence.” Their fascination only increases as they lean closer to observe my actions. I try and clear my throat for a second attempt. I once again press down on the mic.
“Proceed with full system reboot.” I say in a raspy voice.
“Proceeding with full system reboot.” A familiar blue light forms and travels up the crevices of the suit.
“System reboot complete, oh hello sir.”
“Computer I need a full medical assessment right now.”
“Yes sir.” A red light forms at the bottom of my suit and ascends to the peak of my helmet before returning to its point of origin.
“Medical assessment in progress… medical assessment complete.”
“And?” I say impatiently.
“Scan shows severe electrical burns centered in your lower back. It would seem that the electrical surge that passed through the Nano suit did more damage than originally anticipated.”
“Can the suits on board medical systems help in any way?”
“I could administer a low power inhibitor to decrease the amount of pain, but we would require a fully outfitted medical center to actually treat burns such as these.”
“Dammit.” I yell furiously.
“What is wrong?” Rainbow Dash says in concerned manor.
“Unless you can get me a medical facility in my home dimension I am not going anywhere!”
“Sir, please let me see what I can do. Maybe I can heal you.”
“No offense but I am not really comfortable with some talking unicorn using magic on me. I am a little new to this!”
“R.J. think, it is either that or be stuck here unable to move.” Twilight speaks in a surprisingly powerful tone.
I think for a second considering the odds. I try to come up with other options but my mind keeps drawing a blank. I finally after a few moments of thought come to a conclusion.
“Fine.”
“I think it might help if you take your armor off.”
“I can’t exactly take it off.” I say in an annoyed voice.
“I mean the suit is literally linked to my nervous system. If I tried to just blatantly take it off it could cause terrible irreparable damage to my cerebral cortex! The only way we could take it off is once again if we could get to a medical bay in my home dimension to break the connection! My home.” My voice begins to slow.
I gently begin to look down at the ground and close my eyes. My breath begins to stutter. I lower my face into my palms. I almost break into tears but my sadness is quickly replaced by anger.
“How the hell did this happen!” I scream at the top of my lungs. “It was supposed to be routine, I should be home right now. I just went into cryo and was told when I woke up I would be at Saturn. Well this isn’t fucking Saturn! No, I wake up strapped and bound to a god damn mattress!”
At this point sadness overwhelms me and I begin to break down into tears. Twilight and Rainbow dash slowly approach me. Rainbow lays her wing over my shoulder.
“R.J. I am so sorry this happened to you.” Rainbow Dash chimes in.
“We both are, and I think I can speak for Rainbow Dash that we won’t stop until we find a way to get you home.” Twilight says in a confident tone.
I begin to calm down as the tears stop. I slowly raise my head to be greeted by two smiling mares staring at me. “Thank you, thank you both.”
“Alright let’s see what we can do about your back.” The two ponies lower me to the floor gently. They then flip me over so the backside of my body is facing upwards.
“Put you hand over the area where the pain is most intense.” I lift my arm up and lay my palm on my lower back; slowly feeling around for the burned area. As I move my hand upwards a massive welling pain formed in my mid back. It felt as if someone had driven a crank into my muscles and started tightening. My arm snaps back to my side.
“There, I pause to catch my breath, definitely there.”
“Alright I am going to try and use an advanced mending spell. It might twinge a bit, but you need to stay still.”
I nod to show my approval. Twilight closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, after a couple of seconds she exhales her eyelids still shut tight. She bows her head forward until her horn is directly over the burned area. She takes one last breath before beginning her spell. All of a sudden a bright violet luminescence builds around her horn. As she does this a similar light begins to form on my back. I suddenly feel a warm sensation build up on my body. A few moments after this warm sensation transforms into burning pain under my skin. I begin to convulse unable to bear the pain.
“Rainbow Dash hold him down I can’t concentrate the spell with him moving around like that.”
“Got it!” The blue Pegasus dashes over to my front and lays her hooves down on my shoulders. She then puts her full body weight into me holding my body down. I continue to scream in agony.
“Twilight, how much longer is this going to take?” Rainbow asks with an un-confident look on her face.
“Just one more second!” Twilight’s volume slowly builds towards the end of the sentence.
The light emanating from her horn grows brighter and brighter as does the one on my back. The light comes to a point where it is blinding then slowly starts to dim down until it dissipates completely. I hear Twilight breathing heavily behind me. Rainbow still staring at Twilight neglects the fact that she remains standing on my shoulder blades.
“Excuse me could you please remove you hooves from my back.” I say in a muffled voice due to my face being pressed against the floor.
“Oh um sorry.” Rainbow dash says with a slight chuckle. I slowly begin to stand up. As I rise I notice that all the pain had gone. In shock I address the computer.
“Computer, conduct a full medical scan immediately.”
“Yes sir, medical assessment in progress… medical assessment complete.” I notice the other two ponies waiting contently for the results.
“No biological irregularities detected.” The two exhale a sigh of relief, and I too share in the moment.
"Thank you Twilight, I am more than grateful." I say enthusiastically.
"You're welcome." Twilight grins as she walks towards the stairs to the second floor.
"What happened I heard yelling." A frantic Spike came rushing down the stairs.
"I was just re-organizing the books on the sec..." Spikes eyes begin to lock on to my position.
"Ah what did I miss."
“Ah…yea I think it would be best if you went back upstairs for a little while Spike.” Twilight says with a nervous chuckle.
“Um…okay Twilight. I am just going to go finish organizing the books upstairs.” The small lizard then jogs up the staircase, his eyes still locked on the mysterious figure in his home.
I think about asking Twilight to verify if the creature that just wandered downstairs was a dragon, but I quickly realize the stupidity of the question. Also I have kind of learned just not to ask anymore.
Outside the sun begins to set.
“Ah is it night already. Princess Celestia is lowering the sun awful early.” Twilight acknowledges followed by a yawn.
My curiosity overwhelms me as I hear the remark.
“Wait, what exactly do you mean by “she” is lowering the sun awful early.” I say with a very concerned look on my face.
“Well, I mean the Princess is lowering the sun awfully early. It isn't going to set itself.”
“Yes it is. The sun is a force of nature and a powerful one at that. It can’t be controlled.”
“What are you talking about; our princess has raised and set our sun for thousands of years. Just as Princess Luna has done the same for our moon.” Twilight begins to look confused while noticing my difficulty to comprehend what she is telling me.
“Our dimensions are far more different than I had originally anticipated.” I look down at the ground and pinch the sides of my nose.
“Wait, you said our dimensions. That doesn’t make sense. I thought.” I stop Twilight before she can continue. Rainbow grounds herself also shocked by the development.
“I have not been completely honest with you. Let me tell you both the whole truth of who I am.” I pause before clearing my throat.
“My name is Robert Bellitto. I am the current captain of the U.S.S. Ithaca a deep space vessel commissioned by the United States Air Force of the planet Earth. The Ithaca houses an experimental propulsion system known in laments terms as the Gravity Drive. I was assigned to the ship as the first man ever to test the device in the field. I was put in cryo stasus for the duration of the flight until my AI woke me for mission briefing. I was then put back into cryo, everything after that is lost with the ship I crashed here in.” I look up to see the two expressionless faces of the mares in front of me. “I can only imagine a malfunction in the Gravity Drive caused some form of disturbance during the slip space jump, I take a deep breath, causing me to be pulled into this universe.” Twilight is the first to speak.
“This is impossible.” Twilight says as she looks at the floor.
“I realize this may bring up many questions for you, but I may not be able to supply you with all the answers you need.” Twilight continues to look at the floor for several moments before responding.
“I think I am going to get to bed, it is getting late. R.J. there is a spare mattress upstairs. You can use it when you need to go to sleep.” Twilight speaks in a very low monotone voice.
Twilight slowly walks up the stairs looking down with her eyelids lowered. I think of trying to speak to her, but I realize that it would only cause more issues. I turn to Rainbow Dash.
“We are still going to find a way to get you home, don’t worry.”
“Thank you.”
Rainbow Dash grins as she nudges my arm. She then walks towards the door and exits the tree house. Rainbow spreads her wings and flies off into the night sky.
“Sir, I recommend you get some rest. You need to conserve your energy.” The AI emanates from the speaker.
I nod my head as I turn around and walk towards the stairs. As I reach the top I find that the small dragon from earlier is holding a blanket next to the bare mattress. He walks over and raises the quilt to the same elevation as my hands. I take the blanket from him gently.
“Are you really from another dimension?” The young dragon asks with a curious look on his face.
“Unfortunately, yes. Thank you for the quilt.” Spike forms a small smile before retreating to a now sleeping Twilight’s bedside.
I lie down on the mattress and pull the quilt over my body. I notice that my lower legs are left exposed. I sigh as I turn on my side facing the wall. I close my eyes.
“Unfortunately.” I drift off into sleep.
Chapter 4: Recollect and Redress
I slowly regain consciousness. My eyelids glued shut begin to separate back to their natural position. I take a deep breath and hold for several moments before exhaling with a yawn. I start to exercise my muscles as my body comes to life. Slowly, I turn myself over to face the ceiling. What I see, I did not expect. I see Twilight at the foot of my bed, tears welling in her eyes her mouth puckered. As I sit up she gallops to me and holds me tight in embrace. I am shocked, not knowing what to do I wrap my arms around her. I am the first to speak.
“Twilight what happened, are you okay!” I immediately realize the stupidity of the question, but in my line of work I am not exactly trained to properly deal with emotion. Twilight sobbing struggles to speak.
“I am so sorry.” Twilight hugs me even tighter.
“Why would you be sorry, you have done nothing wrong.” Twilight loosens the embrace her eyes still filled with tears. She closes her eyelids gently. Just a short time later her horn begins to emit a purple luminescence. She leans into my forehead.
I feel a sharp shock in the back of my head. Suddenly millions of images start flooding my brain. I feel and perceive them as if they were happening now. For what I was experiencing were my memories, memories of home, and its destruction.
I saw my childhood on Earth, my home in Connecticut. I saw my mother and father. Then everything went dark. A moment later the images came back, but not of my parents or childhood home, no, the evacuation.
I remember that day. It is seared into my subconscious, overpopulation and overuse of Earth’s resources made our once great world barren. Our cities burned in riots, our fields expunged of all plant life. We were force to leave for another home.
Teraforming was a revolutionary new breakthrough in biological science. It gave us the ability to make a new home. Ships were built. Shuttles housing the device were sent to surrounding planets across the solar system. We soon followed, simply abandoning our sinking ship. The image went dark once again.
Twilight moves her head back, her eyes still closed. The luminescence around her horn dissipates completely. I open my eyes, which were now also filled with tears. I stutter.
“Wha..how…why.” Twilight lays her hoof upon my mouth, I remain silent. Twilight now spreads her eyelids apart, her pupils now glistening.
“I am so sorry, I needed to see. I needed to know what you really were, where you came from.”
“Twilight, I left those memories behind long ago, and for a reason. Nobody deserves to feel that pain, especially you.” Twilight forms a small smile and softly buries her head in my shoulder. I too smile. We fall back asleep.
Morning
As Twilight retreats downstairs to the library I erect myself. I begin to move around stretching my stolid body. It had been a while since I had any natural sleep. It felt rejuvenating. With a smile on my face I walk downstairs. I slow midway trying to avoid the sleeping dragon grasping a mop in the center of the stairs.
“He must have fallen asleep during his morning chores, poor thing.” Twilight says with a comical face while she rounds the stair post.
“He sure is dedicated.”
“That is why he is my number one assistant.” Twilight smiled. This moment was swiftly halted by a loud belch. The once sleeping Spike had awoken with a small poof a flame as a piece a parchment formed from nothing in the epicenter. Spike groaned as he drifted back into sleep.
“This world will never cease to amaze me.” I say jokingly. Twilight walks over to the sealed scroll and scoops it up in her mouth. She then advances over to the nearest table and gently lays the scroll upon it. She removes the seal with her hoof as the paper unfolds.
“It is a letter from princess Celestia.”
“Oh her, what does it say.” I remark with a bitter tone.
“It is about you.”
“Not surprising.”
“It says that she wants me to come to the castle immediately. She knows you crashed somewhere near Ponyville, and wants me to assist in her location of you.”
“Mission complete.” I say sarcastically.
“R.J. this is serious, she wants you captured. Remember the princess still has no idea what you are, she could think you are a threat.”
“A threat, need I remind her that her guards fired on me.” I say in a fierce tone.
“R.J. I don’t know what to do. If I don’t go she will eventually come to us, and there will be no place to hide then.” Twilight has a concerned look on her face.
I think for a moment before responding. “I’m coming with you.”
“You’re insane.”
“Anything but. You are right Twilight I can’t hide forever. Eventually they will find me. It might as well be on my own terms. If I hide I just look guiltier. At least this way I will have a chance to make peace.”
“Well what if they take you back into custody!”
“Honestly, I would like to see them try.” My comical expression quickly turns grim.
“I see your logic, but I still think it might be a bad idea.”
“Twilight you need to trust me.” I say in a reassuring tone. Twilight remains silent for several moments.
“Fine, just don’t do anything stupid.”
“That is purely up to them.” Twilight nods.
“There is just one problem. How will we get you there undiscovered? We need to take a train to get into the city, and they have the Royal guards check every car before docking.”
“I am way ahead of you. Computer, execute function active camo.”
“Yes sir, executing function designation active camouflage now.” A white light forms at the base of my suit and once again moves up the crevices. As the light ascends the area left behind it becomes transparent until it engulfs the whole suit.
“That might work.” Twilight grins.
Twilight and I exited the house moving swiftly for the train depot. I stayed closely behind her minding not to knock into any objects as to indicate my being. As we approached the station we slowed to a light jog. Twilight whispers without looking back at me.
“Get in one of the cargo cars in the back. When we get to checkpoint at the barrier stay where you are! Like I said the guards check every car. After we arrive at Canterlot when the station clears I will sneak around and open the door to release you. We can work from there.”
“Sounds like a solid plan.” I then swiftly run over to the furthest cargo car making sure nobody notices the door opening. I unlatch the handle and gently slide the wood panel to the right. I step onto the platform without making a sound. As I secure myself I softly shut the door behind me locking it from the inside. As I turn around I see piles upon piles of crates and scattered luggage. I notice a small pile of suitcases in the top left corner next to the door linking to the next car of the train. I remove them from their place and sit down in the open space. I then rebuild the pile around me forming a cocoon. Now I wait.
It was not long after I heard what sounded like the boiler starting. The train jolted forward verifying my evaluation. The cars slowly gained speed as we hurtled towards the capitol.
The ride to Canterlot was fairly short, a half hour at best. By that time we had come to the checkpoint at the barrier. I looked through the window. I whispered.
“Computer switch visor mode to infrared.”
“Yes sir, switching visor mode now.” A green light formed at the base of the visor and elevated leaving a trail of green luminescence in its wake. I look up and see the familiar scarlet mass in my screen.
“Fingers crossed.” Short after I hear a door open in the distance. I presume the guards had made their arrival. I hear them move from car to car opening door after door. When they grew closer to the cargo hold I made sure the suitcases were secure. Suddenly the train car opened. A flood of background noise from the passenger cars above filled the room. First a unicorn stepped in. His horn emitting a bright yellow light, he was wearing a gilded outfit headed by a turquoise star. As he stepped in he was followed by two other colts in identical uniforms.
They began to slowly walk around the circumference of the car scrutinizing each section of the cargo. My heart begins to race as they approach my section of the car. I try my best to remain still and silent. The head guard begins his pass around me lighting the way for the others behind him. My heart stops when one of the soldiers halts in front of my corner. He turns to me and leans in close. I remain solid as a rock. He stays in this position squinting and making curious sounds such as hmm and ah.
“Hey what are you looking at?” One of the soldiers asked.
“Oh ah nothing, just thought I saw something.
“Well hurry up, there is another train scheduled to be here in three minutes. We need to clear the tracks.”
“Alright alright.”
The colt then began to retreat to the exit. He then regrouped with the rest of his squad and left the car. I exhale a sigh of relief.
We pass through the checkpoint continuing onto the city. I feel the train jolt once again as it comes to a stop. I wait in the car as Twilight requested. During this time I could not help but think. What I would do, what I would say. This moment would either gain me an ally or curse me with an enemy. I needed to be careful.
After five minutes had past I heard a sound coming from outside the car. Unsure I crouch back into the corner not wanting to take any risks. As the door unfolds my defense melts away as I see the familiar purple mare standing with her hooves laid up on the base of the car. I notice her eyes moving side to side, probably looking for me. I once again whisper.
“Computer, de-activate cloaking.”
Twilight hears the sound and turns her head toward my position. I stand as my camouflage faded away. I gently push the cases aside as I make my way to the exit. She seemed relieved to see me safe. I could tell she was nervous to the possibility I was discovered by the guards. I step off the train stretching as I do. Sitting in a crouched position in the corner of a wooden train car isn’t the most comfortable of activities. After a moment I speak.
“Alright, they want me, here I am.”
“RJ, even if we make it un-detected to the castle, what are you going to say to the princess. How will you convince her to trust you?” I hesitate pondering the question. After several moments I turn to her.
“I never wanted to be a soldier, but there was nothing else left for me. My parents had passed my world destroyed, I was broken. War and ignorance is what tore me from my home and family. I will never let it happen to another people, especially you." I now open my helmet, a small smile on my face. Twilight begins to form a similar expression.
“How will I gain her trust?” I repeat the question. "By telling the truth of what I am. So far I have brought nothing but disharmony into your world. I am going to change that today. I only ask if you will help me.” I silence myself awaiting a response. Short after Twilight begins to speak.
“I will.” We both smile. I then step back.
“Computer, re-activate cloaking function.”
“Yes sir.” Almost immediately after the computers response the familiar transparent form engulfs my body. Twilight turns forward, a confident look on her face.
“Alright, follow me.” Twilight gallops forward as I stay closely behind. I mind my surroundings not giving a single sign of my presence. As I pass the civilians in the streets, so peaceful and calm I began to worry. Would they accept me into their world, their lives? Or would they cast me away, an outsider. I needed to get this right, this moment is all that matters.
Then there it was, the immense gilded structure standing proudly in the center of the city. We both come to a slow walk as we approach the gate. All I could see were two gargantuan wooden slabs guarding the entrance. The wall surrounding the castle lined with royal guards. As we advance a new figure stepped out in front of the rest. But he was different, his armor seemed more particular. He emitted some form of significance above the other guards.
Then it came to me, it was him.
The white colt from before, the one who led the assault on me during my escape from the hospital. Twilight exhales a sigh of relief.
“Oh good my brother is here.” Twilight whispers. I stop dumbstruck before speeding up to Twilight’s side.
“What do you mean brother?” I say in a whisper but rather angrily.
“That is my brother Shining Armor, head of the royal guard.
“That is the bastard who caused me to crash into the protective barrier during my escape!” Twilight forms an awkward look on her face.
“Oh…well, we should not dwell on the past.” Twilight sports an awkward smile as we both continue to approach the gate.
Suddenly the white colt in lead of the guards notices our presence and begins to speak.
“Twilight! Good your finally here.” I keep my distance from Twilight not wanting to gain anyone’s attention.
“Brother, I came as fast as I could.” Twilight is now directly in front of the castle wall.
“Let me open the gate so I can let you in.”
“Thank you Shining.” A violet luminescence builds around Shining Armor’s horn. The same spectral mass begins to form around the massive doors. With a loud thump and a squeal the doors begin to fold open. I remain to keep my distance as Twilight begins to walk inside. I start for the entrance.
“Gaurds stand clear; I’m going to cast a protection spell around the gate I don’t want to take any risks. I stand in shock. I notice Twilight swiftly direct her line of sight to her brother, a nervous look on her face.
I sprint for the door. As I run I notice a small mass of light once again beginning to form around Shining’s horn. Then suddenly a line of purple spectra forms at the top of the gate and begins to descend.
I run with all my might still just shy of the gate. I sprint through the entrance, but it is too late. The barrier clips my shoulder as I pass though the frame. I fall to the ground.
“ERROR ERROR…CLOAKING SYSTEMS FAILING CLOKING SYSTEMS FAILING.” The computer yells in a loud monotone voice.
“Uh oh.” Still on the ground the transparent cloak around my body begins to fizzle. All eyes are now turned to me.
“What in the name of Celestia is that?” I hear one of the soldiers yell. My cloak begins to dissipate until it is completely dissolved. I look up; Twilight is standing still in shock looking around at all the surrounding soldiers sporting a similar expression. Even the proud leader goes bug eyed at the sight of me in the castle grounds.
“It’s him, it’s the monster! Al unicorns open fire!” Shining Armor yells.
All around me a growing yellow mass starts to form around the circumference of the wall. I can tell they are beginning to execute an all-out assault.
“Stop, please I do not wish to fight you.” They do not recede and only continue to charge their attack.
“Twilight get to safety now!” I yell across the courtyard.
“But what about you!” Twilight yells in concern.
“I will be fine I can handle myself!” Twilight continues to look around at the growing mass of magical energy before once again focusing on me. She nods slowly and runs for the castle doors. I turn back to the crowd of soldiers surrounding me.
“Computer, divert all power to shields, maximum power.”
“Yes sir, diverting power now.” A blinding white light builds around my body. The soldiers remain concentrated on their attack. I remain stolid.
“Hold on, this is going to be a bumpy ride.” I close my eyes.
“STOP!” A booming voice echos from the sky above. I swiftly look up. The mass emanating from the soldiers horns begin to dissipate as they join me in admiration. As I begin to focus my view I gain visual of the origin of the voice. It was the princess. Her wings in full spread hovering above the court yard. Her face filled with anger and distaste. She begins to lower down to the courtyard. As she does the guards all kneel to respect their leader. I stand erect staring at the white mare as she approaches me.
When the princess touches down I begin to speak. “I did not come here to fight.” I say in a fierce tone.
“Then why are you here.” The majestic princess says somewhat annoyed.
“To explain myself to you, and the world.” We both remain silent for several moments.
“Explain what?”
“What I am, where I am from, and how I came to be here. I do not wish for war, but to make peace.”
“How can I believe you?”
“Because if I really wanted to wage war with your people, everyone in this courtyard would be dead.” I say with a grim tone. The princess at the moment seems surprised by the remark, but then returns to her centered facial expression.
“Come with me.” I walk forward to the princesses’ side as we walk towards the castle. I look behind me to see dozens of guards still kneeling to their princess. Shining Armor is looking up staring at me with a look of hate in his eyes. I turn back forward and direct my view to a small terrace on the balcony above. A distraught Twilight is looking down at me. I nod to her. She repeats my gesture as I enter through the castle doors.
Chapter 6: Forgiving Past Sins
As we approached the castle doors two guards posted at the outer wall started forward from either side. They galloped down the stairs connecting to the courtyard, and rushed to the entrance. Both open each door awaiting their princess. We pass the two, Princess Celestia bowing her head as we did as a sign of gratitude. The two colts bow back.
Our arrival is greeted by a second wave of day and night guards on either side of the corridor. I pass by them hearing murmurs throughout the rows of soldiers.
“What is that?”
“Is that that thing I heard about?”
“Yea that thing that crashed near the Everfree forest.”
“What is it doing here; I thought that thing was supposed to be some kind of monster.”
“I have no idea, but if the princess trusts that thing it can’t be any danger right?”
“I don’t know it wouldn't be the first time something has slipped passed the princess.” I turn to the whispering colts, they immediately go bug eyed with fear and look straight back down at the ground. I exhale a sigh of frustration. Winning over the trust of the princess might not be so difficult, however a whole nation.
My thought is interrupted. Out of the corner of my eye I see a distressed Twilight rushing down from the terrace above. She stumbles as she tries to stop herself before colliding with the princess. She begins to walk forward before she is halted by Celestia.
“Twilight I think it would be best if you stayed out here.”
“But princess!”
“Twilight, please.” The princess says in a slightly annoyed tone. Twilight bows her head as she moves away from our side. I look to Twilight giving a reassuring smile. Twilight raises her head and repeats the gesture as I enter through a second set of doors.
I maintain eye contact until the two doors a shut tight by nearby guards. I look forward to the princess. As I look around I notice this to be this some kind of throne room. Two royal guards are stationed at the base of the throne. The princess signals them to leave the room. They each go in the direction opposite of each other exiting the chamber. As Celestia seats herself at her throne I begin to speak.
“Looks like we finally get to have that civilized conversation after all.” I say with a grin on my face.
“You must understand the precautions we took. We had never seen anything like you before we could not be too careful.”
“Oh I forgive you. Honestly if the shoe was on the other foot, or hoof for that matter. My people would have probably done much worse. We are not exactly the most peaceful of people when it comes to the unknown.” I look down a discontent look on my face. I look up and sigh. After a few moments Celestia stands from her throne and begins to speak.
“I must apologize for being so abrupt, but I would like to fill the gaps left from our last confrontation if that is okay.” The goddess says with a look of sympathy on her face. I raise my head.
“Very well, I pause to clear my throat before looking back at the eager mare, we call ourselves… humans.” The princess’ eyes narrowed as she bowed her head towards me.
“We are a proud race, ever growing and always expanding our reach across the cosmos. We originally inhabited a planet called Earth, a haven flourishing with life and serenity. We along with our fellow inhabitants lived in peace with nature.” I briefly glance up to see the princess still sporting a look of content.
Due to the non-existence of magic in our world we were forced to use science and invention to survive. Although as we continued to grow and advance we began to lose that connection with our home world. As this happened our needs grew and grew. We believed that the Earth belonged to us, and we could just take what we wanted from it without consequence. We were so wrong. We all watched in horror as our once proud planet crumbled around us. People would fighting their brethren in the streets for what scraps were left behind. Eventually we came to see that the damage we had done could not be reversed. So we left our planet leaving Mother Nature to take back what was rightfully hers. We traveled the galaxy searching for new homes. Colonies were established on surrounding planets. As we began to settle we vowed to never make the same mistakes again.”
I clenched my fists as memories that I had locked away years ago came flooding back into my mind. I was consumed by mixed emotions not knowing what to think. Then suddenly I felt a soft presence on my shoulder. I look up to see the princess laying her right wing upon me. She formed a small smile before speaking.
“I can’t pretend to understand the things that have happened in your life. I have never known a world without magic to hold it together. Your people still managed to understand and correct their past mistakes, but that does not mean they are easy to live with. You are strong Captain Robert never forget that. You have lived with the burdens of your people. Now, here, this new world can finally offer you peace.” I begin to loosen my once iron grip to a calm state. I begin to breathe steadily.
“As long as I can remember all I wanted was peace. The world around me was anything but. I let the hatred and fears of the people around me consume my life. I was led astray from my purpose, but this… place can give me what I have always so desperately desired. Thank you.” We both smiled as the princess and I walked to the doors exiting from the throne room.
As we approached a yellow spectrum coated the horn of the mare and soon after engulfed the two wooden slabs. They slowly opened to the familiar large corridor still teaming with guards. They all snapped to attention as we came into sight. The princess signaled them to resume their previous activities. The bodies of the surrounding soldiers loosened though their eyes still followed my position as I was led out of the corridor to a separate section of the castle.
Out of the corner of my eye I could see a small spark followed by a faint glow. When I turn to my side I saw Twilight attempting to catch up with us. She speeds up as she comes to my side.
“So…” The purple mare asks inquisitively.
“Everything is fine my dear student. All past issues have now been resolved.” Twilight lets out a satisfied sigh of relief.
“So is it okay if R.J. returns back to Ponyville with me?”
“I understand you have grown quite attached to our guest; however I still think it would be best if Captain Robert stayed in the castle for the time being, until we can properly introduce him to the public.” I think back to the room of royal guards. A look of disappointment forms on Twilight’s face.
“Hey, chin up. It isn't like we can’t still visit each other. Besides once we get everyone acquainted with me we can hang out without all the awkward stares.” I chuckle a bit at the last statement. Twilight looks up a grin on her face.
“Alright, I guess I should probably head back into town. You know my studies and all.”
“Yes Twilight, I will be sure to arrange some time for you two to spend together for now I bed thee farewell my faithful student.” Twilight nods as she turns around heading back for the corridor. I continued down the separate hallway with the princess.
“She is definitely a studious unicorn isn’t she?” I say as we continue to venture down the corridor.
“Yes well, that is why she is my prized pupil. Her desire to learn to explore, it is what drives her.”
“I think that is a trait we both share.”
“How so?”
“When I was young I always had this need to know everything. I nearly drove my family insane with all the questions I asked, especially when they didn’t know the answers,” the princess chuckles.
“Yes the curiosity of the youth knows no bounds.” I nod before continuing to speak.
“I always dreamt of being able to see the stars first hand, to really feel them personally. Some nights I would just look up at the sky and become lost in thought, wondering of all the possibilities.”
“You remind me much of my sister.”
“Ah yes, her name is Luna if I remember correctly. Twilight told me of your abilities how you are able to control the day and night cycle. I can assure you that came as quite a shock for me. In my universe the Sun and Moon raise and set themselves through an invisible force called gravity.”
“Very interesting, I have a feeling there is much we can learn from each other Captain Robert.”
“RJ is just fine ma’am.”
“Very well RJ.” We approach a large wooden door on the right side of the hallway. The princess stands in front of the passage awaiting my arrival.
“This is where you will be staying until you are formally introduced to the public; I hope it is to your liking.” Celestia’s horn lights up as an identical aura covers the door. The gate opens to behold a magnificent room. The walls coated a vibrant turquoise and elegant midnight blue drapes hanging from the windows on the far side of the suite. At the back of the room lays a massive bed fully made and covered with an assortment of multi colored plush pillows. As I walk in I look up to be greeted by an awe inspiring mural depicting a map of the night sky. I turn to face the princess.
“This is… overwhelming. I have never seen let alone stayed in such a place. It is beautiful.”
“Thank you very much. It is the least I can do.”
“Still… I can’t thank you enough.”
“You can thank me by getting some rest; lunch will be in one hour. I will send one of the guards to retrieve you. There I will properly introduce you to the rest of the royal family residing in the castle.”
“Thank you.” The princess nods smiling before exiting the room. Finally left alone I head over to the bed placing my armored hand on the quilt.
“Computer, activate neural receptors on areas 50A and 50B.”
“Yes sir.” A light glow encompassed my hands as a tingling sensation filled my palms. I once again rested my fingers on the mattress this time however, I could feel.
“It’s… soft.” I smile before lying on the bed. I stare up at the mural once again lost in the entanglement of the celestial bodies before I drift off into a gentle slumber.
KNOCK
KNOCK
KNOCK
I awaken to loud sound emanating from the door. I get out of the bed advancing to the exit. Opening the door I see a white Pegasus guard, hoof elevated presumably preparing to knock again.
“I presume you are the guard sent to escort me to the dining hall.”
“Uh… yes, if you would please follow me… sir.” I could tell the guard was a little nervous around me. Probably due to the events that transpired not long ago. I try to comfort the guard.
“You have nothing to be afraid of. I have never had any intention of violence.”
“Yea… I know. It’s just it isn’t exactly everyday some giant metal alien stays in the castle. I guess I am still a bit surprised about your being here. There were some rumors about you before when you first appeared, but I’m just being paranoid.”
“What kinds of rumors were spread about me exactly?”
“Well nothing that bad… just that you were some demon sent here to destroy all of Equestria.” The guard was now sweating profusely.
“Yes… that is interesting.” How they thought of that was beyond me.
The rest of the trek thought the castle was spent in awkward silence until we reached the main dining hall. Celestia was waiting at the entrance for me.
“Ah RJ glad you made it, you rested well I hope.”
“Best sleep I have had in years, thank you princess.”
“I am glad you got some rest, and please drop the formalities you are a guest of the castle. There is no need to address each other with titles.”
“Thank you ma’am.” Celestia smiles before responding.
“You are quite welcome. Well I think it is time we go enjoy our lunch. I am still not sure what your kind eats so I had the chefs prepare a wide variety for you to choose from.” I nodded as two guards proceeded to open the gate filing into the dining hall. Celestia walked in with me following closely behind. As we entered she motioned for me to stop a moment as Celestia attempted to gain the attention of the several ponies sitting at the large table.
“Attention everypony, all eyes turned to her while some wandered off to my position, I would like to formally introduce Captain Robert Bellitto. He is currently a guest here in the castle and will be until we can properly inform the public of him. He will be joining us for lunch. Also if it is okay with you Captain you are permitted to ask any questions you might have.” The princess turns to me.
“I am fine with this.”
“Very well thank you. Everpony you may now return to your meals.” After her statement some tuned back to their plates while others were still blankly staring at me and or the princess obviously surprised by this turn of events.
“RJ why don’t you go over to the banquet area and find something to eat, after you may come and sit next to my sister and I, I will be sure to save a seat for you.” I nodded once again to the princess before continuing to the large buffet.
Immediately I noticed that the entire spread was vegan, being an omnivore I had no trouble finding something to eat, however I was still troubled by the evident change I would need to make to my diet while staying in the castle. After organizing a basic garden salad I walked over to the princesses. They both turned to see me, Celestia gesturing to an empty seat on her left side which was also next to Princess Luna. I sat down placing my meal on the table. Immediately I noticed Luna awkwardly staring at me. When I looked up she quickly turned back to her plate. We were silent until Celestia began to speak.
“Well RJ, are you enjoying your meal?”
“Yes it is very good, although it will be difficult to get used to an all vegan diet.”
“How do you mean?”
“Well humans are omnivores. We eat both meat and plants. Although I can survive on an all vegan diet it will be difficult to adjust.” The whole room was silent almost everyone was staring at me with wide eyes including both the princesses.
“Well, um… OH Luna do you have any questions for our guest?” The room started to loosen up after the princess changed the subject.
“Actually I am a bit curious of the types of art you kind have achieved.” I look at her a bit surprised.
“Are you alright?”
“Yes, I guess I’m just a bit surprised at the question. Art huh, like music?” She nods
“Actually I might be able to show you some right now.” It was her turn to look surprised.
“How can you there aren’t any instruments?”
“I have hundreds of songs recorded and saved in my suits hard drive.”
“Hard… drive?”
“Oh right… well, think of it like an invisible journal that you write information in and then open that information anytime you want.”
“Ok, well would you mind playing some of your music for us?”
“Well I am not so sure. I mean I don’t really want to culture shock a room full of nobles.”
“Please?” The night princess looks at me with pleading eyes.
“Well… alright. Computer access music entertainment files 37A.”
“Yes sir.” A number of people recoiled at the sound of my computer’s voice.
“It is okay, it is only an artificial intelligence unit assigned to my Nano suit.” Most of the people went from shocked expressions to looks of confusion while the two princesses looked at my in awe.
“Artificial intelligence, you mean to tell me your people have constructed a fake conscious!” I nod.
“That is amazing, may I speak with it?” The princess once again looks at me with puppy dog eyes.
“Maybe another time right now I believe the song is about to start, computer.
“With pleasure sir.”
To the sound of a heartbeat pounding away
To the rhythm of the awful rusted machines
We toss and turn but don't sleep
Each breath we take makes us thieves
Like causes without rebels
Just talk but promise nothing else
We crawl on our knees for you
Under a sky no longer blue
We sweat all day long for you
But we sow the seeds to see us through
'Cause sometimes dreams just don't come true
We wait to reap what we are due
To the rhythm of a time bomb ticking away
And the blare of a siren's combing the streets
Chased down like dogs we run from
Your grasp until the sun comes up
We crawl on our knees for you
Under a sky no longer blue
We sweat all day long for you
But we sow the seeds to see us through
'Cause sometimes dreams just don't come true
Look now at what they've done to you
White needles buried in the red
The engine roars and then it gives
But never dies 'cause we don't live, we just survive
On the scraps that you throw away
I won't crawl on my knees for you
I won't believe the lies that hide the truth
I won't sweat one more drop for you
'Cause we are the rust upon your gears
We are the insect in your ears
We crawl, we crawl
We crawl all over you!
We sow the seeds to see us through
Our days are precious and so few
We all reap what we are due
Under this sky no longer blue
We bring a dawn long overdue
We crawl, we crawl
We crawl all over you!
After the song I had gained quite a few shocked expressions. Celestia had spit out her tea, and Luna was just staring at me smiling. This was definitely going to be an interesting experience for all of us.
“Well… that was, interesting…” Celestia spoke in an unsure tone as the rest of the dining hall’s occupants still stared daggers at me to show their honest disapproval of the intense Heavy Metal.
“I am sorry, I realize now that might not have been the best choice of music to start out on.” Several of the nobles simply stuck their noses into the air without even making eye contact with me.
“Well I loved it. It is just so powerful, and the emotion was astonishing.” Luna said still beaming a smile. “May I ask the name of the piece?”
“Well, the band was known as Rise Against and the song was named Reeducation. It is actually several hundred years old, but is still widely accepted.”
“Several hundred years old, wow do you have anything from your era you would like to show us?”
“Well seeing the reaction they had to Heavy Metal I do not think their minds could even process something like Death Step, how about something light like some orchestral pieces perhaps?” Celestia perked up at the mention of the more familiar music style.
“Now that is something I would be very interested in RJ.” Celestia formed a small smile. Luna looked slightly disappointed but continued to show her intrigue.
“Very well, Andrew open music entertainment files 12C.”
“Certainly sir the song will begin momentarily.” With that the computer accessed the file and silence gripped the room.
As the song opened with the graceful assortment of string instruments Celestia closed her eyes letting her mind flow with the orchestra. Luna still kept a calm relaxed face obviously waiting for the song to pick up.
As the Orchestra became more and more rapid Celestia’s eyes opened sporting a look of confusion while Luna had a small grin. Then the song really picked up entering its climax.
The playing came to a stop for a brief moment before the orchestra returned in full force. The graceful notes of the strings entangled with the impact of the drums and cellos. When the song had ended I looked up to see Celestia with her mouth agape along with most of the others in the room. Fearing the music had the same affect I sighed before a cheer erupted in the hall. Celestia herself joined in the applause. I looked to Luna who was once again beaming.
“That was amazing RJ! Thank you so much, I never thought that orchestra could make such an impact. Most of the songs made by our symphonies are rather dull, but that was astonishing.” Luna said excitedly.
“It truly was very good. I have to admit I was rather surprised toward the end.” Celestia exclaimed.
“Yes, that one is one of my personal favorites.”
“Yes I can see why.” After the display the now calm group continued with their meals peacefully, save for a certain Prince.
“Well RJ I notice that you and most of us are finished with our meals, so I will be returning to my chambers to complete some of my royal duties. For now, Luna why don’t you show our guest back to his room, it is the suite in the east corridor.”
“Certainly sister, follow me Captain.” Luna said as she disembarked her seat walking toward the exit. I too got up from my seat giving a ‘hoof’ shake to Celestia who elicited a smile.
As I exited I passed several of nobles I had seen prior all greeting me with a light nod of acknowledgement, I repeated the gesture. I continued to follow Luna before I was halted by a frustrated white unicorn.
“I do not know what auntie sees in you beast, his voice was filled with arrogance, you are nothing but an unwelcome entity and I will see to it that by the end of this-!” He was swiftly cut off by Luna.
“Blueblood ENOUGH, he is a welcome gust of the castle and will be treated as such!” Luna yelled as we immediately gained the attention of the remaining ponies in the dining hall.
At first the bold unicorn looked back and forth between me and Luna fuming. With a, hmpf, he stuck up his nose and trotted away. ‘What a snob.’ I thought to myself.
“I must apologize for Prince Blueblood’s behavior. He can be so arrogant sometimes.” Luna said with an obvious look of distain.
“It is fine. I’ve trained to deal with people like him. I still must thank you for your actions.” I said with a lighthearted smile.
“You are more than welcome.” Luna said returning the gesture.
As we walked down to the corridor I couldn’t help but look up. The ceiling beheld a large glass panel giving visual to the night sky above. I continued to stare mesmerized by the artwork before Luna nudged me with her right hoof. I shook my head before looking down.
“What were you doing?” Luna asked with a look of confusion on her face.
“Just getting lost in the stars, the night sky has always captivated me.” I said returning to my ‘star’ gazing. Luna formed a light blush before speaking.
“You enjoy the night?”
“Ever since I was young, every night I would stare up at the sky seeing the wide span of the celestial bodies. They are like art so beautiful that it deserved the whole universe at its canvas. I wanted to be able to gain a front row seat to see such natural beauty unfold.” Luna’s blush deepened as she just stared speechless at the strange creature she had met only two hours prior.
This continued until they finally reached the proper door. Luna using her magic to open it led the Captain inside. He turned around a similar lighthearted smile on his face and began to speak.
“Thank you Luna for your help have a good night.” Robert began to head inside before he was halted by the night princess.
“RJ, I just wanted to say… thank you for those kind words of our, I mean my night.”
“I merely spoke the truth.” They both nodded to each other before going their separate ways.
Robert took to his bed lying down to rest on the mattress for a long awaited rest, as he did this Luna had already arrived in her chambers walking out to the balcony. Staring out deep into her magnificent night sky she let out a deep breath as a smile formed on her face.
“Beautiful…” She said before spreading her wings and taking off into the comforting cold of the night.
Robert laid in his bed half asleep the same smile from prior still dawned on his face.
“Andrew?”
“Yes sir.”
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight sir.” The weary captain drifted off into a long slumber.
Chapter 10: Shadow's Desire
“RJ, are you sure you’re alright, you look like you just went through quite a bit of pain.” Luna exclaims showing quite a bit of concern.
“Yea, yea I’m fine… maybe. Can you just give me a second, I need to check something.”
“What is it, what do you need.” Celestia speaks.
“Just give me a moment *inhales/exhales* Andrew you there?”
“I am always at your service sir.”
“Alright this may sound a bit strange, but I need you to perform a full internal diagnostic of the Nano suit. Check for any foreign viruses. Also do scans of the on board coms relay I want you check for any sort of tampering or attempts at unauthorized access.”
“Yes sir.” As the AI speaks as a wave of blue aura washes over me, I notice some of the concerned looks I have gained from the audience present. Although I motion them to sit back down and they comply.
“…Scan complete awaiting analysis… no viruses or other foreign threats to the Nano suit’s internal integrity detected…the coms relay has had no recorded attempts at usage as for exactly three years, five months, two days, and 41 seconds.”
“What, but how is that possible. The voices, I know I heard someone.” I mumble to myself gaining Celestia’s attention.
“RJ, are you alright, what are you saying.” I am quick to respond in a semi-panic.
“Nothing, nothing, it’s just… nothing *sigh*.” What am I supposed to say? Oh high princess I’m walking around in a suit that can level an entire mountain range of and by the way I might be going insane!
“RJ, there is nothing wrong?” Luna asks still concerned.
“Yea I…” Before I complete an all too familiar voice emanates from in front of the dining hall table.
“Ugh auntie, how long is that… that… beast going to be in the castle. Honestly you expect to me to eat in the presence in such a ruffian.” Blueblood had entered through the north entrance and has continued on to his seat at the head of the table.
“You are always welcome to eat in your bed chambers.” Celestia speaks trying to sound calm.
“I refuse, either it leaves or I make it leave.”
“Blueblood…” Luna says the sound of impatience and distain in her voice. When she starts to continue I move my hand up signaling her to stop as I begin to speak.
“Blueblood I think we need to have a discussion in private.” Blueblood fumes a bit when I don’t address him as his title.
“No, anything you have to say can be discussed right here. I refuse to leave.” He says still maintaining that same smug look. God I want to just take my fist and… calm down… calm down…
“Very well, I look to both princesses both with neutral expressions, I believe that the behavior you have been exhibiting since my arrival has been… somewhat indecent.”
“How dare you judge me, listen here monkey-” He begins to speak before I cut him off.
“I only pass judgment on those who deserve it. Blueblood, you have no right to treat me the way you have I-”
“Rights, HA what rights. You are not even a pony.”
“Blueblood-”
“You have as much rights as a caged animal.”
“Blueblood-”
“You are nothing by a freak of nature!”
“Blueblood-”
“You know being the generous stallion I am maybe I should just put you out of your misery *silence*.” At this point my teeth are clenched, my fists are tightened, and I am breathing heavily. The room still remains in utter silence. Suddenly I feel like something is… shrouding me, that something is different somehow. I begin to speak once more, but the voice… it is not my own.
“Blueblood, could you step over here for a moment.” I say venom dripping from my voice.
“And why would I listen to you.”
“Oh, I just want to say one last thing face to face before I take my leave.”
“Hmmm…. Very well I will humor you with my presence.” He slowly walks over to me trying to look as superior as possible, which is rather difficult when your opponent is almost twice your height.
“Now what is so important that…?” Before he gets that chance to continue I grasp him by the horn and hoist him into the air getting an audible *eep* from Blueblood. I pull him up until we are face to face.
“Now, I am going to say this once. How dare you, you arrogant bastard! You dare call me… a high ranking member of the most fierce battle regiment forged in the universe, part of the most highly developed civilizations in all recorded history an animal, A FREAK OF NATURE!” I pause to see Blueblood coiling in a ball at the sheer volume of my voice.
“IF ANYONE IS THE FREAK HERE IT IS YOU, YOU WORTHLESS MAGGOT. I SWEAR IF I EVEN CATCH YOU ACTING THIS WAY TO ANYONE I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN BREAK OFF YOUR HORN AND WEAR IT AS A FUCKING NECKLACE!” Blueblood is now shivering in my grasp.
“IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?!” He hesitantly nods. When he does this I simply drop him on the ground letting his body flop onto the hard tile as I turn to the exit. Everyone is staring at me in disbelief at what I had done. Even both princesses seem shocked at my sudden outburst. Behind me all of the day guards that had tried to intervene prior flood around the fallen prince. Blueblood pushes them all away fuming furiously as he does.
“THIS IS NOT OVER!” Before I could turn around a large purple luminescence builds in the corner of my eye until I feel something crash into the back of my head. For a moment it stings and I stagger a bit but surprisingly the attack does not cause any pain. Actually for some reason I feel… better. I stand back up and turn to see a very surprised Blueblood his horn still slightly charged, but it swiftly dissipates as I approach him.
“YOU LOOSE A FIGHT HONERABLY, AND YET YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO SHOOT YOUR OPPONENT IN THE BACK!” He cowers before me as I continue my advance.
“ENOUGH!” I look to my left to see Celestia now standing fully erect with both wings spread. Obviously an intimidation tactic, it does not faze me. To vent my blind rage I simply storm out to the exit hearing Luna cry for me to wait, but I was already gone.
Chapter 11: Enter Darkness
I felt nothing but pure anger course through me as I traversed through the many vacant corridors of the castle. So much pent up rage just appearing in an instant, it was almost painful. Where did it come from? I knew I was mad, but they were just words. I have never let anything get to me like that. I felt the familiar shroud creep up around me causing me to wince in pain due to the dark presence.
“We are disappointed in you.” The demonic tone rang through my mind sending a wave of splitting headaches.
“What are you, what the fuck do you want!?” I yell to myself. Then it started to laugh again as I double over in pain.
“Ha, what do we want? What we want is you Robert. You have so much potential, so much power that you lock away, like you did when you confronted that pathetic insect of a prince.”
“No.” I plainly stated.
“No, what do you mean no. We can give you so much power, so much opportunity. Yet you turn us away. He deserved to die.”
“NO, no one deserves that…even him.”
“You are mistaken. However, we will help you find that path you once knew, but threw away.”
“What…what are you talking about?” I ask in-between breaths.
“We cannot simply tell you, it is something you must discover on your own. Like we said before, we are not your enemy. We are here to help.” I feel the presence slowly begin to fade.
“Wait, WAIT!” I yell in desperation, but the presence was gone. There I was, keeled over on the floor, head buried in my palms. Waves of slowly dispersing pain were wading through my body.
“Robert, Robert is that you!” I heard Luna’s voice echo through the halls.
I wanted to call back but could not find the energy as I remained strewn upon the carpeted floor.
“Robert…” Luna said as she began to round the corner. A very determined look was on her face as she glanced around the corridor before her eyes landed on the limp Captain. Her expression became that of pure shock and concern. Springing to life Luna ran towards Robert. “By creation Robert, what has happened?!” Robert remained silent as he breathed slowly. Luna took a deep breath before yelling in her Royal Canterlot Voice. “ROBERT WE DEMAND YOU ANSWER US THIS INSTANT!” The moment that un-relenting wave of sound hit my ears I scrambled to a sitting position.
“Ahhh…!” I yelled by clutching my ears. “L-Luna… what are you doing here?”
“Looking for you, after that incident with Blueblood you just stormed out of the dining hall! We were all so worried about you and still are!” It was then I realized the concern I caused from my outburst. I decided to take responsibility for my actions.
“Yes Luna you’re right, I’m sorry for what I did. I was just…so angry, I-I was not myself.” Luna sighs as she takes a seat next to me.
“I am very aware of how rage can sometimes dictate our actions. Although it is important you always try your best to see the light of reason before making any hasty decisions, for sometimes the outcome can be… less than desirable.” I noticed the saddened look on Luna’s face, probably recalling an event from her past. I was curious as to what caused such a show of emotion, but decided not to press on.
“Thanks you Luna, I will remember.” This brings a light smile to Luna’s face as she looks back up at me, it was good to see her happy.
“Yes well… OH! By the stars we need to get you to the infirmary!” I was taken aback by her change in composure. Luna realized this and shied away looking back to the ground. I noticed a slight hue of red forming on her cheeks. “I am sorry for my outburst, but we do need to report to the infirmary.”
“May I ask why?”
“Robert, you were hit almost point blank with magic arrow. A powerful one at that, and the fact I just found you in a vegetative state on the floor is not a very comforting sign.”
“Wait, magic arrow… was that the glowing orb that hit me on the back of the head?” Luna nodded in response. “Well… I don’t really feel all that bad.” I then noticed the flustered look on the princess’ face. “…Although, if you think it best then I will agree.” Luna beamed a triumphant smile as she stood and began to walk forward. I quickly rose to my feet and followed in tow.
_____
The walk to the infirmary was rather uneventful due to the majority of the castle staff still taken by their slumber. As we entered the white sterilized room I was met with a very flustered white Alicorn. She was staring directly at me with a stoic look. She began to walk over to me calmly still maintaining that neutral expression. When Celestia had stopped her advance directly in front of me I decided to plea my case.
“Celestia, I know my actions were wrong and I am sorry. I let petty insults get to me and foolishly acted on them. I apologize for threatening your nephew and causing concern as per my departure. I will accept any punishment you have.” I looked down to the ground in shame, not expecting what came next. Celestia trotted over to me wrapping me in a tight hug. My head bobs up in shock. I look down to see Celestia lightly sniffling into the crook of my neck.
“We thought you were leaving, that we would never see you again.” Celestia says in-between sniffs.
“Celestia I-I… had no idea you cared this much.” I said feeling a slight lump begin to build in my throat.
“RJ, you are a kind, caring, and genuine stallion. You are such a nice pony, and I hated to see you so angry. I hate seeing any of my friends so distressed.”
“F-friend…” I say as I begin to tear up.
“Yea, Luna chimes in, we both are. Robert, you have shown nothing but kindness since your arrival here. We both know you have a good heart, and never want to see that beautiful spirit tainted by anger, fear, or sadness.” Luna walks over and shares the embrace.
“I-I… thank you…” I share the embrace before we all pull apart. Celestia wipes away her tears as Luna also rubs the redness out of her eyes. Celestia nervously chuckles before speaking.
“Heh heh, I apologize for losing my composure. I suppose all the stress of the past few weeks has been taxing on all of us.” I give a light hearted smile as did Luna.
“There is no need for apology, I believe we all needed to release a bit of our emotion.” I look over to Luna who is still smiling.
“Yes, I believe this did us all some good.” Luna said.
“Well I think we still have an examination to conduct.” Celestia suggested.
“Girls I really feel fine…” I began to resist, but both gave me the death glare sending chills up my spine. “You know I could just do a quick scan on my suit…” They maintained their expressions. “*sigh* there really is no arguing with you on this, is there.” Both immediately perked up before smiling smugly and saying.
“Nope…” Both trotted into the examination room as I followed.
I lightly laugh to myself as I follow the two happy mares into the examination room. In the room were several cabinets placed at about my chest height, probably to compensate for the naturally short stature of the ponies. In the center laid a large chrome table draped with a paper thin sterile tissue. Celestia and Luna both walked to the center of the room. I began to follow before a loud sound behind me interrupted my walking pace. Looking back I was greeted by the sight of a very distraught grey unicorn that had burst through the examination room’s doors. He proceeded to give a hasty bow to the princesses before speaking in an apologetic tone still bowing his head.
“I am extremely sorry for my being late princess, I was held up at one of the Royal Guard’s barracks and I ran here as fast as I could-” Before he finished Celestia held up a hoof. Seeing this he silenced himself with a worried look on his face.
“Please, doctor, there is no need to apologize. You are not at all late. We had a bit of difficulty bringing our friend here to seeing reason and coming here, so you are just on time.” Celestia said with a motherly smile nodding to me.
The doctor eased up at this before turning to see where the princess had gestured. When he looked up at me his pupils went to pinpricks and mouth dropped agape. I simply stared back at him before deciding to make the first move.
“Ahem, hello doctor, my name is Captain Robert Bellitto. I am to believe you are the one conducting this little examination?” The doctor stammered before responding.
“Uh…ah-ahem, yes well my name is Vaccine and yes, to answer your question I am the one conducting the examination. I apologize for my little fit there, it’s just I was not expecting well… something like you.” I smiled and chuckled a bit.
“It’s okay Vaccine. Trust me I have gotten used to it by now. So, shall we continue with the exam?”
“OH yes of course, sir. If you would follow me…” The doctor led me over to the examination table. “And if you would please sit down… excellent, now for the scan to be accurate I need you to be absolutely still do you understand?” I nodded. “Good, now princess is this going to be a full body scan or is there a certain area you wish me to check?”
“Yes actually there is. We wish for you to examine the area consisting of his upper neck and lower cranium.” Celestia answered.
“Of course you majesty.” Vaccine said with a short nod before turning to me. His horn produced a faint glow with a white hue signaling the activation of his spell. I felt a familiar tingling on the back of my neck as I awaited the results. This went on for several moments before the tingling stopped and the luminescence surrounding the doctor’s horn dissipated.
“Well princess, there is not anything really wrong concerning any major trauma to the brain stem, or muscular damage. Although I did find some light bruising on the outer layers of skin, I can honestly say that this uh…man, yes man is perfectly healthy.” Both the princesses seemed very surprised by this. Both their eyes going wide as their mouths clamped shut. “Uh princess, may I ask the reason for you reaction to these results.” Celestia seemed to loosen up a bit before speaking.
“I-It’s just… he was hit point blank by a class 6 magic arrow.” The doctor gasped before sharply turning to me with wide eyes.
“B-but that’s n-not possible. To come out of that unscaved is nothing short of a miracle. My boy, you should be thanking your lucky stars you’re even able to stand right now.” I was stunned. Now I knew why Celestia and Luna were so determined to have me properly assessed.
“Doctor Vaccine is right RJ. To shrug off an attack like that is no laughing matter. I have some questions for you later, but those can wait until another time. For now I insist you get some rest. I know the doctor said your scan came out clean, although there could still be some unknown effect that we are not seeing. The state I found you in at the corridor if anything proves that theory.” Luna states.
“What happened in the corridor?” Celestia asks with worry evident in her voice.
“Later Tia later, for now I believe we should escort R.J. back to his quarters.” Celestia nods in compliance. “Alright, oh and thank you doctor for your time.”
“Think nothing of it your majesty.” Vaccine says with another bow. Luna smiles before her and Celestia begin their trek to my bed chamber as I once again follow their lead. The walk was again rather uneventful. We did run into the occasional chamber maid or servant, but they mostly just gave a quick bow or nod out of respect for their rulers. I did get a few odd glances, although most just considered if I was with the princesses I was most likely not a threat. When we reached my room Celestia generously opened the door for me with her gold aura of magic while Luna led me inside. Once I saw the bed I hastily stripped the freshly made sheets off and flopped down onto the soft mattress.
“Okay RJ I am afraid I must take my leave, it is almost noon and I must go to my slumber. I bid thee well my friend.” Luna surprised me with a gentle nuzzle before she left for her chambers.
“I unfortunately must also leave to begin day court. However I do wish you the best in health, RJ.” Celestia shared a similar embrace before heading to the door. “OH, I almost forgot with all the events of this morning. Twilight will be coming later this day for a visit. I will have a guard come to escort you when she arrives.” I turn to her with a warm smile.
“Thank you for everything, Celestia.” She smiles as well and gives me another quick nuzzle before exiting the room. It was not long before I drifted off into sleep.
_____
“You are almost ready.”
“The time is nearly here to unlock your true potential.”
_____
I awoke with a start. Bolting straight up in my bed, beads of sweat rolling down my forehead. My heavy panting was interrupted by a knocking at the door.
*KNOCK* *KNOCK* *KNOCK*
“Sir, are you awake? Sir, I am here to escort you to tea with Miss. Sparkle.”
“Argh, one second I’ll be right there.” I groggily force myself out of the lush velvet prison and made my way to the door. Unlocking it and opening the passage I was met with the sight of a white Pegasus guard clad in full golden armor.
“If you would follow me, sir…” The guard proceeded to walk down the lengthy corridor with me at his tail. The path led to a spinning stone set of stairs which I lazily climbed still exhuming the tired feeling from my body. Three flights up, we stopped at a tall pair of lavender doors. Two guards were already stationed there, both sets of eyes turned their attention to us as both proceeded to open the doors. The guards motioned me inside, I complied. The room was none other than the Canterlot Royal Library. I was awestruck at the massive expanses of books and knowledge that spanned the walls. All the things I could learn…
“Ha, I had a similar reaction my first time in here.” Looking forward I saw the happy face of a certain purple unicorn. Smiling as she excitedly waved to me from a table set up in the center of the room. I happily jogged over to the setup taking a seat. On the platter were a small china kettle and two teacups. Also a moderate sized bowl of sugar and a miniature pitcher of milk. “Would you like some tea?”
“Yes, thank you very much Twilight.” Twilight laughed a bit.
“It’s no problem, OH and how are things going with the planning for the introductory ceremony.” I sighed as Twilight using her magic poured the dark amber liquid into the cup and levitated it over to me. Grabbing it from the air I brought it to my lips taking a short sip before speaking.
“Not well, we’re going to have to post-pone the event due to some…recent events.”
“Wait, recent events, what does that mean has something gone wrong since I left?” Twilight asks with concern.
“*sigh* It is not something that concerns you Twilight, it has already been dealt with.” I lied; I still needed to confront Blueblood about that little scuffle.
“Okay, if you say so…”
“Hey I know, how about you tell me what your friends have been up to.”
“Well, RD has been trying out this new stunt that she intends to get her inducted into the Wonderbolts.” I nodded having no idea what the hell the Wonderbolts were. “Ah, and my friend Pinkie Pie who you have not met was very mad at me for letting you leave before she could throw you a welcome party,” I quirked an eyebrow at that. “Pinkie is a bit of a party animal, and always wants to make new friends. Maybe I should bring her and Rainbow up here for my next visit.”
“That sounds like a good idea. Pinkie sounds like a very nice per- I mean pony.” Suddenly I felt a slight twinge at the back of my skull causing me to lightly wince.
“Yea she really is. Also my friend Rarity wants to meet you. I told her about your suit and-” Twilight continues to talk, but I became more and more distracted by the growing pain. My trouble became evident as Twilight finally took notice of my behavior.
“RJ, are you okay you look rather uncomfortable.”
“Yea I’m fine, I just…ARGH!” A large searing pain explodes from my cranium, causing me to drop my teacup as it crashed to the floor shattering. I firmly grasp the sides of my head in an attempt to ease the onslaught.
“RJ, GUARDS GET HELP SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH RJ!” At the sound of her voice, the two Solar Guards from earlier burst into the room rushing towards our position.
“Miss. Sparkle what has happened-” The guard now looked at me before turning to the fellow guardsmen. “Go get the princess, tell her Captain Robert is in need of immediate assistance at the library.”
“Ay sir!” The other pony yelled before galloping back outside.
I had my eyes closed tight, but then after I heard Twilight scream… “RJ what’s happening to your suit!” Looking down I saw a light red aura slowly building in intensity surround my suit. “What is that energy it’s massive. Is that, no it can’t be?” Twilight stutters in disbelief.
“Twilight what is it, what is happening!” I yelled. Twilight only continued to back up, a look of horror plastered on her face. The light of the aura was blinding, causing me to clasp my eyes shut. Then, a low hum began to sound. A slight tug was felt on my spinal cord before…
BOOM!!!

_____
I was awoken to a surge of electricity trailing throughout my spine. After a brief muscle spasm due to the surprise charge, I begin to let myself calm down. Opening both eyes, they are met with a vision of empty black. Before my mind could start processing the situation, the familiar monotone voice of Andrew, my on board AI, echoed into the helmet piece.
“Oh thank goodness that worked. Hello sir, how are you feeling?”
“Great…just *sigh* great. Andrew, would you mind telling me what in the hell just happened?”
“Well, I am not exactly sure myself, sir. The Nano-suit just completed a full system reboot moments ago, and all existing data before that is… corrupted. All I can tell you is that some unknown energy wave caused the immediate shutdown of all of the suit’s systems, including me.”
“Well that’s just great. Can you at least tell me why the nanites have the suit on lockdown mode?”
“One moment, sir, I will check the recent data logs.” After a few moments the AI’s voice returned through the helmet’s speakers. “It seems that the suit commissioned a complete lockdown of all exterior ports due to… insufficient oxygen supply? That is rather odd. Why would there be an- oh my.” The surprisingly worried sounding tone slightly panicked me.
“Andrew… what is our current location?”
“Uh… sir, I think it would be best you see for yourself. Just… don’t panic. I assure you it is perfectly safe-” I cut him off there.
“Andrew, unlock the God damn visor.”
“…as you wish, sir.” There was a slight whirring sound as the heads up display came to life. Moments afterwards, a *click* sounded at the peak of the visor, followed several more *click*’s around the perimeter of the panel. The nanites making up the face plate slowly melted away, almost as if being washed of the helmet’s front. The outside world was now visible, only… it was not any world I was seeing.
“What…the…fuck.” The sight before me was not an unfamiliar one, but it was first time seeing it from such a… exposed perspective. In front of me in all her glory, was the vast emptiness of space. Millions of stars twinkled in the black, creating small glints on the transparent plate. Absolute silence reigned, leaving me to just lay there undistracted, staring in awe at the sight. Wait ‘lay’ if I am no longer on that planet, then… where was I? This prompted me to glance down. Below me was a form of white powder. The substance surrounded me. Looking back up, I caught a sight that confirmed my belief. White hilltops appeared in the distance, rock formations jutting out randomly on the lunarscape. Turning to my left awaited the floating blue orb that was the world I resided on only moments ago. I was able to pick out the individual land masses until being cut off by a shroud of darkness encompassing half the planet.
“Sir, as impossible as it sounds… we have somehow been transported to this planet’s moon. I have no solid hypothesis as to how this happened yet, but I have a ‘hunch’ it was most likely linked to that unknown energy signature I detected before being shut down.”
“Yeah, most likely,” I say softly. Still bewildered by that fact I had somehow achieved teleportation.
“Sir, I understand your confusion, and most likely your *ahem* mild hysteria. Although, we have some pressing matters to attend to. The most important being our limited air supply. I estimate the on board tanks to only last us another three hours at most.” This fact shakes me from my stupor, taking on a more determined attitude.
“Well I better get of my ass then, and get working on a plan.”
“Actually I would not recommend over-exertion as that could hasten the depletion of oxygen. Although I do agree we formulate a plan on how to acquire a sufficient supply of oxygen, which unfortunately is rather unlikely due to that fact we are currently located in the vacuum of space, or we can look more into the unknown form of energy that supposedly brought us here.”
“I think I’ll take the latter.”
“I also believe that is-” The AI was cut off mid-sentence.
“Andrew, is something wrong?” There was no response. “Andrew, respond!”
“Sir, I am detecting some form of energy buildup due south of our position!”
“Do you have an estimated distance to the anomaly?”
“Yes sir, the buildup is located roughly… two meters south of your position, oh dear.”
“I swear you do this just to piss me off.” I snap while turning around. What was waiting for me, I did not expect.
“Hello, Robert. It is wonderful to finally meet you face to face.” That voice. It was the voice that has haunted me ever since arriving in Equestria. Now, I finally saw its true form, and it once again took me by surprise. Instead of the demonic hell spawn I had formulated in my mind, there stood what looked like… a pony. The mare adorned a flat black coat. Save for a single section of purple fur on her flank witch contained an image of a crescent moon. Her mane and tail were almost identical to another mare I had come to know. Luna . Her mane blew in a constant flowing motion. Gazing into it one would think they were staring into the dark expanse of space. The most noticeable feature she had would have to be her eyes. The reptilian irises stared directly at me, letting me lose myself in a pool of green and blue. On both her sides laid two large black wings. Both folded neatly inward. A top her head was a long sharp horn, sharing the same color as her coat and wings. All things considered, she indeed was not the demon I thought her to be, or at least didn't look like it. She was actually... quite beautiful.
“H-how are you here.”
“The moon is my domain. While within its boundaries I can take on my true form. It is actually quite refreshing to be in my own body once again.”
“Are you the one who brought me here?” I ask assertively.
“Well, yes and no. It was your own energy that brought you here, I merely guided you. What happened would have happened even without my presence, but you should count yourself lucky I was here.”
“And why, might I ask, is that?”
“The buildup of magical energy in your body became too much for your form to take. It needed to release some of that energy either willfully by your part or… forcefully.”
“Wait, whoa… what do you mean by 'magical energy'. That just sounds stupid. Last time I checked, humans can’t use magic.”
“In your world that may be true, but here magic is a law of nature. Just like gravity. It affects all beings it touches, including you, but we have gotten off track. That buildup of energy when released could have done anything, from a harmless illumination spell, to an explosion that would level all of Canterlot. I simply took that energy, and borrowed it, then used it to cast this teleportation spell.”
“Why bring us here though. I doubt you just brought me here so I could get a look at your 'true form' and a quick lesson on magic.”
“To answer your first question, I had no way of being certain it would bring us here. However it is rather fortunate that it did.”
“Why is that?” The black mare trotted over, speaking to me as she passed by.
“That is the answer to your second question. You are right, I did bring you here for a purpose. I wish to show you something.” I still held my guard while voicing my response.
“Why show me here, why not when you were busy fucking torturing me in my dreams.” The mare takes on a somber expression before speaking.
“I am fully aware of my actions, and that they were somewhat cruel. Although right now you need to put aside whatever thoughts you have had of me prior.”
“Why should I! You have done nothing but cause me pain and suffering since coming here. Why would I ever listen to you?!” That stops her in her tracks. Turning to face me the mare sports a look of pure hate.
“Because… it is my nature, I can help it as much as you can help being human.” Letting her words sink in my mind is flooded with even more questions. What does she mean her nature? Why does she seem so… compassionate all of a sudden? So far I have taken her as nothing but a dark entity, a spirit only here to cause me pain. Yet, now she almost seems… human.
“Alright… I’ll go.” The mare nods before continuing on with me in tow.
“Prepare yourself Robert. You are about to see the story of how I came to be. The story… of Nightmare Moon.”
Chapter 9: Just a Nightmare
It was peaceful in the capitol city of Canterlot. Night had taken over the sky and the moon had been raised beaming light to the humble citizens as the laid down to slumber. All rested in tranquility dreams engulfing their minds. Save for a single soul, but not one of a pony, rather a human. As he rested his mind slipped into unconsciousness unaware of the coming visions.
FLASH
I awoke to the blaring of sirens blasting in the streets. Frantically I looked around trying to discover where I was. It hit me light a freight train. This was my childhood home… on Earth.
“Oh please not again, please no more!” My eyes began to well up in tears before I was interrupted. The door to my bedroom slammed open. Standing there was none other than my mother, distraught and fear showed on her worried face. Fear for the safety of her son.
“RJ get up we need to leave!” Before I could say something another voice chimed in.
“Anna we need to go now, get Robert forget the luggage!”
“Get the car started we will be right there!” She advanced for me. As I felt her touch my senses dissipated and vision blurred as my surroundings dissolved around me.
FLASH
I regained my composure. I was now in a car, hurtling down an abandoned highway. Looking out the window I saw dozens of abandoned automobiles. I glanced up and gasped as I caught sight of the sky. It emitted a blood red aura that sent a ghostly chill down my spine.
“Mom?” I asked in confusion.
“Everything is going to be okay sweetie we’re almost there.” She stuttered holding back the tears.
FLASH
I was floating no not floating something was holding me, and we were running. Finally I came to my senses. My father was holding me in his arms chasing after my mother who was already ahead of us.
“Charles, hurry there closing the gates!”
“I’m running as fast as I can, those bastards why won’t they wait!” My father yells angrily.
FLASH
I was in a room. Surrounding me were hundreds of people, all having that same look of fear, worry, and sadness in their eyes. Getting up I take deep breaths attempting to get myself together.
“Where am I?” I mumble.
“Provide your name and date of birth please.” A cold voice emanated from behind me. I turn to see a metal face with a singular luminescent eye scrutinizing me.
“Huh? What, where are my parents they were just here?!” I ask a twinge of sadness in my voice.
“Provide your name and date of birth please.” The android asks once again.
“Where are my parents!?” I ask furiously. The android stares at me with the same emotionless face before peaking again.
“Provide your name and date of birth-.”
“WHERE ARE THEY WHAT HAPPENED!?” I scream at the top of my lungs before breaking down crying. For I knew what had happened, I had already lived this moment.
My eyes still closed when a chuckle started to sound next to me. The chuckle sent a chill through my body. Darkness now surrounded me. The evil entity continued to laugh. Every time it did it felt like someone was pushing a needle into my mind.
“WHAT ARE YOU, SHOW YOURSELF!” I lash out in anger only to be greeted by the same laughter. I grab my head in agony.
“Oh what depression, what fury it’s so… delicious.” Venom dripped from its voice as the entity spoke.
“WHO ARE YOU?!”
“There is no need to take such a tone I am not your enemy. In fact I might be your greatest ally if you let me. As to who I am you will find out soon enough human.” The voice chuckled again as the darkness around me vanished, I had woken up.
Instantly I fling myself upwards and inspect the area. I am in the suite.
“It was just a nightmare.” I say as I bring my hand to my forehead. I am sweating profusely.
‘No, no there was something else. Argh, it was just… my imagination. Maybe the stress of all this is finally getting to me.’
KNOCK
KNOCK
KNOCK
My thought was interrupted as someone knocked on the bedroom door.
“Captain, you have been requested by the Princesses to join them for breakfast in the dining hall.” At this point I was already at the door.
Behind it was standing a royal guard who when I exited the room simply began walking away. I followed him to the dining hall where two other day guards opened the doors so I could enter. When I passed they slammed shut behind me.
I advance for the table several familiar faces were present. Celestia and Luna were sitting at their usual spot in the center, next to them was prince Blueblood, and across from them was, Shining Armor. When I went to sit down the captain of the royal guard had already turned to see the visitor. When he gained sight of me a scowl formed on his face. The tension was broken when Celestia spoke up.
“Ah RJ, I am glad you were able to join us. I will have the maids prepare a platter for you.” She said with a smile as two maids had already begun advancing for the buffet table.
“That won’t be necessary I am more than capable.” The two maids stopped and headed back to their normal posts.
“Oh well alright, help yourself.”
After I gathered a simple breakfast of a blueberry muffin, some strawberries, and a small glass of what I think is a pony variation of coffee I went to sit down in my usual spot next to the two princesses. When I sat down the two princesses smiled then looked to Shining Armor who was still staring daggers at me.
“Ah hem, Shining Armor I realize you two might have met on unique circumstances and I feel a need to clear the air. This is Captain Robert Bellitto. He will be staying in the castle until we can properly get introduced to the general public.” Shining’s expression loosened but still had a show of disapproval.
I sat up and extended my hand across the table for a shake.
“I hope we can put our past differences behind us.”
Shining at first was hesitant but reluctantly he returned the gesture.
“Wonderful, now captain speaking of your introduction ceremony I would like to begin planning for it later today.” Celestia spoke.
“Yes, I think the earlier we get the planning done the faster I can get out of your hair or mane as it is.” Luna replied to this.
“Oh RJ neither of us is trying to get you out of the castle, we both enjoy your company very much it’s just that we want-.”
“Luna it was just a joke. I know you aren’t trying to get rid of me, I just feel like I am kind of freeloading. I mean you have fed me and given me a place to sleep while I haven’t done anything in return.”
“Hmph, yes count yourself lucky a creature like yourself has been shown suck generosity.” Blueblood spoke gaining obvious looks of disapproval from both princesses.
“RJ, we do not at all want you to feel that way. Like I said it is the least we can do.”
“Alright, but I am just saying if there is anything you need assistance with I would be more than happy to help.”
“Well if you are that insistent on helping I am sure we could find you something for you to do.”
“Thank you for you agreeing with me princess.” I said as I continued to consume my muffin completing breakfast.
‘Well at least there is something I can do to give back. They have done so much for me and I will do anything to repay them.’ As I finished my thought an all too familiar chuckle clouded my mind. I winced at the pain it caused. Both princesses noticed this.
“RJ, are you alright.” They asked in unison.
“Yes I fine. I’m alright… I think.”
