Chapters Rainbow Dash was a streak through the darkening sky. She was carrying Scootaloo in her arms as she flew towards Canterlot. “Damn it Scoot, I’m gonna get an earful from Rarity for this. She kept bugging me about being on time for the party.”
“I couldn’t help it! I had to finish my homework before I got ready for the party!”
“Ugh you should just do what I did when I was your age!”
“What did you do?”
“Copied Applejack’s homework.”
Rainbow Dash carried the young girl through the sky towards their destination: Twilight’s birthday party. Princess Celestia gave them use of Canterlot Castle’s gardens this year, and the turnout was going to be HUGE. Shining Armor and Princess Cadance where going to be there, and Celestia was most likely going to make an appearance as well. As she approached the castle grounds, Dash could hear music in the air.
She touched down on the grass and gave Scootaloo a toss. “Go find your friends, I’m gonna find Twilight!” Scootaloo sped off towards the music, and Dash headed towards the nearby crowd. She jostled her way through a group of people she’d never seen before until she bumped into Applejack.
Rainbow Dash’s heart skipped a beat. Whenever she was near AJ lately, she became nervous and felt a knot in her chest. She didn’t get it, she never had these feelings before, so why now? Nothing had changed between them, she was feeling weird for no reason. She was close enough to Applejack that she could-
“Well look who decided to show up! Lemme guess, you forgot what day it was?”
Dash snapped out of her stupor. “N-no! I promised Scootaloo that I would fly her over and she was running late! I had to bust into her room and grab her, otherwise I would still be waiting for her!”
“You could have made sure I was dressed in more than my undies first.” Scootaloo had found her friends, and the three girls where at Dash’s elbow.
Sweetie Belle looked up at Dash. “My sister’s mad that you’re late for Twilight’s party. She said she wanted to see you as soon as you got here.”
The last thing Rainbow Dash wanted was to get an earful from Ms. Prim-and-Proper herself. She turned back to Applejack. “Yo AJ, where’s the bar?”
Applejack grinned pointed her thumb over her shoulder. “Follow me, partner.”
They started off towards the bar. “By the way RD, good work dressing for the occasion.” This may have been a joke, but Dash actually did dress up. She was wearing her only polo shirt (light blue) and her ‘nice’ jeans. Plus she took out her labret stud and nose ring, and ran a comb through her hair.
Dash blushed at the combination of playful insult and compliment, and blurted “Same goes for you.” AJ was wearing her usual button-up plaid shirt and jeans.
AJ turned, indignantly. “Hey, these are my nice boots!”
They continued on until they found the bar, and took a seat. After chugging her first hard cider, Dash finally relaxed. “Hey, so I know Rarity is mad at me… but what about Twilight? She mad that I’m late to her party?” Dash loved Twilight like a sister (a somewhat annoying, know-it-all sister perhaps), and she never wanted to let her down.
AJ Chuckled. “Heck no. She’s been on the dance floor with Pinkie for an hour or so. She’s had a few to drink, so I doubt she knows what time it is.”
Dash perked up at this. “Awesome! I’m gonna go find them!” She hopped up from her stool and made her way towards the music. Once again, Dash fought her way through the crowd, this time ducking Rarity’s searching glare. Vinyl Scratch must have had the amps turned to eleven, because the bass shook her damn bones the closer she got to that dance floor. She glanced around, but couldn’t find Twilight or Pinkie. Suddenly, a pair of hands came from behind and roughly grabbed Dash’s breasts.
A sing-song voice called out, “Guess whooooooo?”
Dash broke free of the grip and turned around angrily. “Geeze Pinkie, you’re supposed to cover my eyes!”
“Aaaaaw, but I like grabbing your boobs…” As usual, Pinkie was all grins. She hadn’t bothered combing her hair for the occasion, but Dash doubted she knew what a comb was. She was wearing a short pink dress that flared out from her hips and ended in frills. The dress only accentuated her hourglass figure. Pinkie was what some people might call “chubby,” but that’s what happens when you eat nothing but sweets. Most of her fat went to her boobs, ass and thighs, but she still had a nice squishable stomach. Pinkie didn’t care; she wasn’t the type of girl who had body image issues.

Pinkie wasn’t one for relationships, never was. She said she loved everybody, and to be forced to choose only one person would be cruel, so unlike Dash, she never tried making relationships work.
Once again, Dash was grabbed from behind, but this time by her shoulders by a surprisingly drunk Twilight Sparkle. Dash turned around and was brought into a bone breaking hug. “DAAAAAASH! You made it!”
Dash struggled to break free from the hug. “Of… of course I did… wouldn’t miss your birthday for the world Twi.”
Twilight gave Rainbow Dash a sloppy kiss on the cheek. “You HAVE to try this new drink Pinkie made,” she said suddenly looking serious. “It’s AMAZING.” Dash knew better than to try any of Pinkie’s concoctions; they were as alcoholic as they were sweet. Not a good combination.
Dash waved off the cup being pushed into her face. “Uh, I think I’ll just stick to cider tonight Twilight.”
Twilight put her pouty face on. “Fine, but you have to dance with me then.”
Rainbow rolled her eyes. “Well, if I must,” she said, sarcastically.
Half an hour or so later Dash managed to break away from the dance floor and sought solace in another cider. It wasn’t often that Twilight got drunk, but when she did she went wild, and it was hard to keep up with her drunk energy.
AJ sidled up to the bar and patted Dash on the back. “Hey, I just saw Blinkie over by the-“
Rainbow Dash jolted up, startling Applejack. “Blinkie is here? Oh shit! Where is she?”
AJ sat down next to Dash. “Damn girl, calm down. She’s way over in the gardens with Fluttershy.” A weight was lifted from Dash’s chest. She heaved a sigh of relief and took a gulp of cider. AJ approached the subject cautiously. “Let me guess… you broke up?”
Dash thumped her head on the bar. “Yup.”
“Who did the breaking up?”
“I did.”
“Why?”
“……”
“Come on Dash, you can tell me. We’ve been friends since we were kids.” There were few secrets between Dash and AJ.
“… she wanted me to move in with her.”
AJ leaned back and sighed. Dash had a problem with commitment. She was fine with it until it became ‘too real’ for her. Usually it was when she was introduced to parents, but she held out a bit longer this time. “I thought you liked her.”
“I do! It’s just…” Dash took another swig of cider. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m fine getting into girls’ beds, but the second they start throwing around… the ‘L’ word…”
“You freak out?”
“Yeah…”
This was one of the few times AJ couldn’t help Rainbow out of her funk. AJ hadn’t been in too many relationships, and the ones she’d been in ended pretty calmly. She opted to give Dash another pat on the back and take a sip of her cider.
“AJ? Am I a fuck up?”
“Hell no, why would you think that?”
Dash merely pointed across the bar. AJ looked up to see Lyra and Bonbon kissing. “They have no problem being together, so why can’t I figure out how to do it?”
AJ was at a loss. This seriously wasn’t her field of expertise, but she ventured a response she thought was safe. “Maybe… maybe you haven’t found the right girl?”
“Maybe…” Dash lapsed into silence until she finished off another cider. “Is it easier to date men?”
This startled Applejack. She knew Dash had been gay for as long as she had known her. Even when they were kids Rainbow Dash had been as anti-boy as possible. “Wh-why do you wanna know?”
“I dunno. Maybe the cider is catching up to me. And the beers I had before I showed up.”
AJ smiled. “To tell you the truth, dating men isn’t any easier.”
“Of course not. Well then fuck it.” She raised her mug. “To being a single asshole.”
They clinked mugs and had more to drink.
Three times over the course of the night AJ and Dash had been pulled onto the dance floor. The second time they ran into Rarity, who didn’t give Dash too hard of a time. Although she criticized Dash’s clothes, as usual. They saved Fluttershy from a group of guys who were hitting on her, on several occasions. Dash nearly ran into Blinkie, only to be redirected by AJ at the last minute. Twilight danced with Princess Luna, and Rarity gushed over Princess Cadance’s dress. Shining Armor locked Twilight into a powerful noogie before giving her an equally powerful hug. Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, and Apple Bloom were caught trying to sneak a few beers, but AJ let them off the hook this time. They hated the beer, by the way. Pinkie set off a huge fireworks display, nearly setting the garden on fire. She thought it was funny. Applejack ended up holding Twilight’s hair back as she puked. All in all, it was a pretty good night.
Then Dash kissed AJ.
The Morning After and Advice
Drunk AJ simply filed away the kiss as “another thing that happened” in her brain for the rest of the night. She forgot about it and kept partying. She woke up the next day with a powerful headache and couldn’t find her hat. It was probably in a tree or something. She got out of bed and realized she was still dressed. She stripped off most of her clothes and walked to the bathroom in her underwear. She had a bruise on her foot. How did that get there?
She turned on the shower and started brushing her teeth in a daze. Rainbow Dash kissed me . The memory jumped suddenly into the forefront of her mind. She was on the dance floor with Dash, Twilight, and Pinkie. She had a drink in one hand and she was throwing her hat with the other (so that’s where it went). She was laughing at a joke Pinkie had told. Dash suddenly jumped in and kissed her. Just like that. She remembered not caring about it at first, hardly noticing even. Then Dash grabbed her around the waist and brought AJ in close. AJ had closed her eyes and felt Dash’s tongue enter her mouth. She had put her arms around Dash’s shoulders. How long did the kiss last? Seconds? Minutes? It ended when Pinkie half laughed, half shouted “get a room, you two!”
AJ dropped her toothbrush in the sink. Dash had run off after that. She tried to remember if she had seen her later but the night was a blur. Only one thing stuck out: Dash had kissed her, and she liked it.
She sat down heavily on the edge of the bathtub. “Oh, shit.”
Rainbow Dash was going to leave town. Yeah, that’s it. Just up and leave. It was the only option. She would leave before word spread and the humiliation crushed her.
“Fuck me, why am I so fucking stupid? FUCK!” She was pacing her room. She hadn’t slept.
Everyone saw it. Everyone saw her kiss Applejack. Everyone already knew Dash was gay, that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that she drunkenly made a pass at a straight girl and was rejected in front of literally everyone she knew.
They were dancing and drinking, Pinkie was laughing and Twilight was unsteady on her feet. She had turned around and she saw Applejack. AJ was sweaty and red-faced, and her hair was unruly. She was absolutely beautiful. Dash kissed her. She grabbed her by the waist and kissed her. AJ pushed her off. Pinkie shouted “get a room, you two!” and everyone laughed. They laughed at her. She ran away and ran straight into Blinkie. She threw her drink in Dash’s face.
Dash’s life was over. She was humiliated in front of more people than she cared to remember, and she had probably lost her best friend. Why am I such a fuck up?
Suddenly there was a knock at her door. She ignored it and buried her face in her pillow. There was a second knock, louder than the last. Dash dug her face deeper into the pillow. The third knock was too insistent. Dash stormed over to the door and looked through the peephole.
It was Applejack.
Rainbow Dash ducked down and wished she was invisible.
Applejack was getting a bit pissed off now. She hammered on the door for the fifth or six time and started shouting. “I know you’re in there, Rainbow Dash! Open the door! Look, I just want to talk. I ain’t mad at you!”
There was a moment of silence before Dash’s voice came from the other side of the door. “Go away AJ.”
“I ain’t leaving until we talk.” She crossed her arms, daring anybody to make her move.
“There’s nothing to talk about. I fucked up.”
“No you didn’t. We were both drunk. I know you didn’t mean anything by it.”
There was another long pause before Dash replied, in a significantly lower voice. “I think… I think I did…”
AJ felt a pit in her stomach. “Come again?”
“I dunno I just… lately… I feel funny around you. I don’t know why. I know you don’t like me like that, but… I can’t help it.”
AJ didn’t know how to respond. Was her best friend confessing to her?
“Dash… I-“
“You don’t have to say it. I know you don’t like me like that. I just hope… I hope I didn’t fuck us up. I don’t want to not be your friend.” Dash’s voice was coming from near the bottom of the door. She must be on the floor. AJ lowered herself to about Dash’s level.
“RD… honestly I don’t know what to think right now. I don’t hate you. In fact… I didn’t really hate… it. The k-kiss.”
“Shut up.”
“Hah, no seriously. You’re um… a good kisser…” AJ didn’t know what she was saying. Her stomach was a knot. “Look… let’s have a day to cool off, okay? Promise me we can talk tomorrow?”
“…………. Okay.”
“Okay then, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Applejack left feeling more confused than when she arrived. Nothing was resolved after all.
Rainbow sat with her back to the door for a while. She knew AJ was only saying that stuff to make her feel better, but it was almost working. She wasn’t going to run away after all.
She heard a distant bing that indicated a text message, and set off in search of her phone. She found it in the bathroom, for some reason. The text was from Pinkie. “dash do u have my panties?”
Dash sent back a simple “no” and started to make a sandwich. She had just realized she was starving. About a minute later, another bing brought Pinkies response. “found them at twilights xoxo” The thought hit Dash like a brick. Twilight can help me. She’s smart, she’ll know what to do! “Okay! One hour!” They both hung up and Dash began pacing.
After 20 minutes of waiting, Dash was at Twilight’s house. She banged on the door until a groggy Spike answered.
He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, yawning.“Uuuugh what do you want so early?”
Dash pushed past Spike. “Where’s Twilight? We need to talk.”
“She’s in the shower.” Spike yawned and stomped off. Dash ran upstairs to Twilight’s bathroom.
“Twilight?” She burst into the bathroom. “Twilight hurry up!”
“Rainbow, get the hell out!” She chucked a shampoo bottle at Dash from around the curtain. Dash decided to retreat to a safe distance for now. A minute later the water turned off, and Twilight emerged from the bathroom, still wet, clad only in a towel.
“Dash I said one hour, it’s only been like ten minutes.”
“Twenty seven, but I couldn’t wait. This is super important!”
Twilight rolled her eyes. “Fine, what is it.” Dash held out a badly wrapped gift. Twilight stared at it blankly. “You forgot to give me a birthday present? That’s it?”
Dash blushed nervously. “Well… that’s part of it. I figured I should butter you up before I get to the next part.”
Twilight grabbed the gift. “If you wanna butter me up, make me breakfast and wait for me to get changed.” She pushed past Rainbow Dash and slammed her bedroom door.
Ten minutes later, Dash had the bacon and eggs ready as Twilight came downstairs clad in a t-shirt and a pair of purple panties. “Sorry I’m so grumpy, I’m just really hungover.”
“Hey, it’s cool,” Dash started serving Twilight’s breakfast. “I’m not feeling too hot myself.”
Twilight snorted. “Never could have guessed. What’s up?”
Dash sat down. “It’s… not really easy to say… How much of last night do you remember?”
“You mean besides Pinkie nearly burning down Canterlot? Not much. Why? What did you do?”
“I… kissed Applejack. In front of everyone.”
Twilight choked. “Are you cheating on Blinkie? Oh, Pinkie isn’t going to be happy about that…”
“No! We broke up! And Pinkie saw it happen!”
“Why did you kiss her?”
“I don’t know! It just happened!”
“Geeze Rainbow, you have to think through your actions sometimes! How do you think AJ feels about this?”
“She said she wasn’t mad, but I don’t know how to feel about it!”
“Feel about what? If AJ isn’t mad or anything, then what’s the problem?”
“I think I love her!” Silence fell around the kitchen.
A moment passed as Twilight chose her next words. “Are you… are you sure? You don’t exactly have a good track record with healthy relationships...”
“I know that, I just… I can’t help it. I can’t get her out of my head. When I’m near her I get this knot in my chest and…” The girls sat in silence for a minute.
Twilight chimed in. “Tell her how you feel.”
“No way Twilight! I should just let this die without it going anywhere! It’s the safest option!”
“But if she’s your friend, then she deserves to know the truth. It’s the right thing to do.”
If it’s the right thing to do then why is it the hardest? Rainbow Dash was pacing around her room, waiting for Applejack. AJ had sent a text saying she would be by in an hour. That was sixty-three minutes ago. Dash felt like she was going to die when she heard the doorbell.

She opened the door to find a nervous looking AJ standing outside. “Hey RD. Can I come in?” Dash couldn’t speak, so she just opened the door wider and stood aside. AJ came in and they stood silently for a minute. AJ managed to break the ice. “Can I uh… grab a drink?” Dash nodded.
Dash’s fridge was full of sports drinks, beer, and coconut water. AJ didn’t know how Dash lived on this healthy junk and no ‘real’ food. She grabbed a water bottle anyways.
She turned to find Dash a ways away from her, staring at the ground. The silence was getting to be too much. AJ just wanted to tell Dash not to worry about it. She wanted to say that they’re still friends and nothing had changed. She couldn’t get the words in her mouth.
Rainbow Dash suddenly looked up and took a deep breath. “AJ I have a crush on you and I know you don’t feel that way about me and I’m sorry that I feel this way and I’m trying to stop and it won’t happen again but Twilight said I should be honest so I have to tell you that I’m totally in love with you and it’s driving me fucking crazy!”
It took AJ a moment to process Dash’s rushed confession. It took her longer to find a response. “I know, Dash.”
Dash was taken aback. “How long have you known?”
“A while. Even when you were with other girls you were always... looking at me”
“I… I guess that’s true. But I didn’t know until recently…”
They were quiet for a while again. Dash spoke quietly. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
“But you probably hate me now! You pushed me off like I was attacking you!”
“No I didn’t!”
“Uh, yeah you did! I nearly fell on my ass!” Dash was getting angry, for some reason.
“No Rainbow, you stumbled when I put my arms around your neck! You had to stretch to reach me in the first place!”
Dash processed this for a minute. AJ was at least a head taller than Rainbow Dash was (Dash had always been short for her age), and she was really drunk at the time. It was hard to remember.
“I guess… yeah I guess I did…”
AJ sighed. “You see? I didn’t push you off.”
“Yeah…” something sprung into Dash’s mind, as clear as day. “You put your arms around my neck.” She looked AJ triumphantly in the eyes.
AJ turned bright red. “I was, uh… you were gonna fall so I, ya know, grabbed you-“
“You said I was a good kisser!” Realization was dawning.

AJ rolled her eyes. “Fuck it.” She grabbed Dash and kissed her. They didn’t break the kiss for over a minute. When the kiss broke Rainbow chuckled. “I guess you really do.”
A few minutes later the two girls were on Rainbow’s bed, still embracing and kissing. Dash’s tongue was exploring AJ’s mouth. AJ felt better than she had felt in a long time. Dash groaned, resigned to her fate. “Fine.” She grabbed the glasses from AJ and put them on. “Happy?” She heard a click. Applejack was holding her phone.
