Power outages don’t ordinarily improve a day that’s boring in the first place. Once in a while, though, they’re unexpectedly interesting. I’d been annoyed when the lights died and I heard my PC’s fan spin down. “The fuck now? Can’t you just work, you piece of—”
Suddenly realizing something was tapping at my head changed my focus in a hurry. Looking up to see Discord, a fictional character (I’d thought) floating overhead sent me recoiling backward, cursing further.
“The shit? Wha? What the fu—” Discord’s laughter and claw over my mouth cut off my profanity, but my eyes were still wide as saucers. He was touching me! He was REAL!
“Now, now, I’m quite certain this is indeed a momentous occasion for anyone living in such a boring world as this one. Sure, there’s chaos, but it’s all just violence! No magic, no real unpredictability—no FUN! How can you STAND it?”
Stunned out of my mind, it took me several seconds to even try to reply. I guess by then, though, Discord had decided he’d waited long enough, and moved on without me. Or with me, maybe—he’d sat me up, wrapped an arm around my shoulder, and was gesturing at some vision or something only he could see.
“My boy, you can’t! You can’t stand this boring, bland, blasé existence any longer, and I am here to fix that!”
“Wh—how?”
“Why, I’m glad you asked! I’d have told you whether you did or not, but still, I’m glad you asked! I was getting rather concerned that you weren’t capable of words after your little shock. So, I’ll tell you. You, I am going to send straight to Ponyville! As a stallion, naturally—sure, sure, seeing a human in their world would cause more than the usual amount of chaos, but it wouldn’t be very GOOD chaos. They’d know what was going on, more or less, and where’s the fun in that?
“No, you’re going as a stallion, and with a very special gift from yours truly: the power to do anything you like with those funny little Equestrian minds! One little tap on the noggin, and anyone you like is at your disposal! They’ll do what they’re told, believe what they’re told—the world is your oyster, my boy! As suddenly as Discord had appeared, the floor under me vanished, and I was falling—through a sky that never should have been there. As I panicked, I saw Discord’s head poke through the hole in the air from which I’d come, with one last warning:
“Oh! Nearly forgot! How silly of me! You can only control them for a day!” He popped out of existence, appearing beside me. He was in free fall as well, but certainly much calmer about it than I. “One last thing: a favor for me. Cause some chaos, would you?”
With a grin, Discord pulled an umbrella from nowhere, stuffed the handle in my mouth, and vanished completely, leaving me to float slowly to the ground as I became the pony he’d promised I’d be.
Floating to the ground holding an umbrella in your teeth is unnerving enough. Looking down as you do, and seeing that landing in Everfree Forest is an inevitability only adds to the anxiety. By the time I reached the canopy, “nervous wreck” would’ve been an apt, if understated description for my state of mind. I took more relief than I care to admit in that stray gust of wind that pushed me into a tiny clearing—a clearing with a small, strangely adorned wooden hut.
I’d no sooner set down than a blue-eyed zebra stepped out of the hut, an empty basket held in her mouth. Zecora. Blinking in surprise, she set down the basket and walked over. My heart was still pounding in my chest and, well, I was a pony suddenly, damnit! She couldn’t have failed to notice my clueless condition if she tried.
“What, may I ask, has you in this state of dismay? It must be no small thing, to come all this way.”
Right. Rhyming. Of course. My mind raced trying to come up with something, anything plausible. “I… well, I, uh…” Okay, so I was going to need a little more time to come to terms with this whole situation. Luckily, Zecora assumed I needed help.
“It seems to me that your tongue is tied. Come into my hut; calm down inside.” Picking up her empty basket again, she turned to head back into her hut, obviously expecting me to follow.
I had just enough presence of mind to be grateful that she wasn’t asking more questions. Discord really had turned me into a pony, and he really had dropped me right into Equestria. Was everything he said true? Did he really give me powers? I realized I was staring at the room around me, and tried to recover myself as quickly as possible.

Zecora smiled reassuringly as she closed the door behind her and walked over. “At last, it seems your words are free. So, what is wrong, if you’d tell me?”

Do you have any idea how long it took me?” Discord’s expression changed entirely again. Suddenly, he appeared thoughtful. “No? Well, neither do I. Oh well, who cares? Jokes aside—though you really should have seen your face—that wasn’t a bad start. Here, a little gift to commemorate your first attempt at chaos.”
With a snap of his claw, Discord produced an ordinary looking pocket watch and dropped it directly on my head. In spite of myself, I must’ve glared a bit, as he began cackling once more.
“Again! You should see—oh, here!” A mirror burst from the ground right in front of me, causing me to jump and, I’ll admit it, shriek like a filly. Discord’s laughter was uproarious. “Perfect! Oh, I hope you saw that! How utterly magnificent!”
Trying not to blush, I picked up the pocket watch that had fallen on my and gave it a look. It certainly didn’t seem special.
“Right! The watch. You didn’t have all the time in the world. Still don’t! You’ve got that much more now, though: that delightful little trinket will give you a bit of stopped time.”
Discord motioned as if he were pressing a button on the watch. “Click!” Thirty seconds to cause whatever trouble you like.” Twisting in the air as he flapped for altitude, he called down to me. “Have fun!” Without so much as a pop or puff of smoke, he was gone.
I dropped to my haunches, suddenly realizing just how stressful dealing with an insane, nearly all-powerful being was. Clearly I was going to have to think of bigger messes to make. With a sigh, I got back up and headed out of the forest, pocket watch worn around my neck.
That I had come out not far from the road past Sweet Apple Acres had been fortunate. Accurate navigation was certainly not going to be easy for me here; I’d take any dumb luck I could get. I got more than my share: as I trotted along the road, my excitement having rebuilt itself, I heard a grunt and a thump to my right, coming from the orchard. What I should have done, however, was move. At the last second, Sweetie Belle realized I wasn’t about to, and yelled to Scootaloo. “Look out!”
She did, just in time to scream as the trio plowed right into my side, sending all four of us to the ground. I groaned as I sat up. All three fillies were shaking their heads and rubbing minor hurts until Apple Bloom blinked and remembered something. “Oh yeah! Hey, are you all right mister?”
I suppressed a sarcastic “Thanks for asking,” opting instead to just nod as I pushed myself back onto all four hooves. I nearly fell back down again as Discord’s disembodied voice rang in my head. His sarcasm was almost palpable.
“My, my, finally made it to town, and trampled beneath the hooves of little fillies. I’m glad to see I chose someone so capable. You’re going to need all the help you can get, aren’t you?” The voice sighed, exasperated. “Fine, you can now choose to have a pony you control control one more pony for you. But only one! And no more presents until you earn them! Honestly, watching you is as exciting as watching bread rise in the ov—my pumpernickel! It’s burning!”
The voice was gone. I must have had my very best “what” expression on my face, as the fillies all looked very concerned for me.
Scootaloo looked up at me doubtfully. “Uh… are you sure you’re okay?”
Figuring out just why Discord would bake was going to have to wait. I shook my head as if clearing it, and made a show of smiling reassuringly, despite the pain in my side. “I’m fine, just a little dazed."
Apparently relieved to hear me speak, Sweetie Belle stepped forward, the tiny curls in her mane and tail bobbing slightly. “Hi! We’re the Cutie Mark Crusaders!”
Next to her, Apple Bloom nodded as if confirming her friend’s greeting before adding her own. “Hi! What’s yer name? Are you new ‘round here?”
I smiled and nodded, pondering opportunities. Sure, I was becoming a real bastard, but I wasn’t so far gone yet that I’d take advantage of these three. On some level, I was a little reassured by that. That didn’t mean I couldn’t use them for a little chaos of a lighter nature though, did it?
“I’m Blank Sheet. Nice to meet you, girls!”

Suddenly they were shouting. “And we’re, THE CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!”
“…wait, I already told him that.”

“Even if they already know?”

Sweetie Belle nodded, sending her curls bouncing again. “Sure! What is it?”
Taking a seat in front of them, I gestured, sweeping a hoof in an arc, pointing at each in turn. “I can make anypony do anything!”

Apple Bloom’s eyes had gone blank, and her expression slack. Scootaloo suddenly seemed a bit nervous, but Sweetie Belle, naive as ever, just looked curious. I needed to test what Discord had given me, and this seemed as good a chance as any.
“Go hypnotize Scootaloo, Apple Bloom.”
Expressionlessly, Apple Bloom poked her friend in the head, and Scootaloo’s gaze grew distant and her jaw slack. Sweetie Belle, the lone unaffected filly, just looked at me in astonishment.

“Now then, your presents.” Discord vanished, and appeared next to a stage with three curtains, connected to ropes nd pulleys. He did love his showmanship.
“Present number one!” Discord yanked the rope, and the curtain fell to the ground in front of a pedestal on which sat… nothing. More accurately, I guess, nothingness. Hovering over the pedestal was a wavering, inky, formless spot. “Starting now, you can blend into the shadows! And I don’t just mean hide in them—I mean when you stand in shadow, that’s all you seem to be! Maybe somepony could spot your outline, if they really tried… but I doubt it! Did I say “starting now” just then? I meant now, not then; you don’t have the power yet. So, now. Wait, now. Oh forget it, here!”
Discord swatted the wad of shadow in my direction, and it struck me full in the face. For just a moment, I was terrified—the whole world had gone black! That passed as quickly as it had come, however, as the shadow flowed over me, coating my entire body. I looked down at my fur. Unless I was mistaken, it was a shade darker than it had been. I had no more time than that. Discord was moving on.
“Present number two!” Yanking the cord again caused the curtain to fall, this time there really was nothing on the pedestal. Discord frowned. “That’s not right. Present two was some spending money! There was going to be a pair of saddlebags there, full of bits! Now where did it… oh, whatever, I’ll send it to you when I find it.” Internally, I pondered the dangers of serving an entity as disorganized as a god of chaos.
Discord’s frown vanished entirely, and he stepped to the third pedestal. “Finally, present number three. You are going to love this one!” He yanked the last rope, and there, sitting on the pedestal was Spiral! I looked where she’d been, and sure enough, she was gone. Worried for her, I looked back to the pedestal. She’d gotten her bearings, and was on all fours, glaring at Discord.
“Present three is Spiral here!” Before Spiral or I could even act surprised, he flicked her nose. She had just enough time to raise her forehooves to cover the hurt sniffer before whatever Discord had done set in completely, and they fell back down. Her ears fell, and her eyes, rather than going blank, had gone rings of impossible colors. This was way beyond my power.
Turning back to me, Discord harumphed. “Swat at me, will she? Remember the rules? One day of control? Well, am I the Spirit of Chaos, or am I the Spirit of Chaos? What I say goes! And I say you get to keep this one! For the rest of her life—or yours—Spiral is your faithful hound. She won’t be any different than what you did to her, but it’ll stick. Now, she really does exist for you.”
Discord snapped his fingers, and Spiral hopped from the platform, walked over, and sat right next to me, her eyes still strange colors. She shook her head and returned to normalcy as Discord and his stage vanished, though she seemed a bit shaken.

“Discord’s the one who gave me my power. He pops up now and then to give me something new, or tell me how I’m doing. Next time, don’t worry so much. I only screamed because he startled me.”
“Oh. Um… sorry Master. What did he mean, ‘I’m your present?’” Spiral’s head was cocked to the side, curious, but I wasn’t really in the mood to explain in detail. I kept stroking her hair, and smiled.
“It means I won’t have to give you up. You can stay with me.”
Spiral looked happy enough to cry at the notion of never leaving me. It was very endearing. So naturally, that was when Discord found present number two. Disembodied, his voice came from nowhere. “Oh! Now what was it doing there?” Saddlebags fell from the air just behind Spiral.

Spiral’s hypnosis probably didn’t have any one day limit, but I was confident my power was more potent while it lasted. “Fluttershy, you’re a bit more assertive now. Discord snapped a claw, and I immediately felt his power wash over me. Spiral’s expression told me she’d felt it too. The floating dragon-pony-thing continued. “That power is a disguise. I felt some of the stress fade from my tense withers. A Discord-level disguise should fool even Celestia herself, at least at first. This was perfect! The keyword was a weird pick, maybe, but it’s Discord; weird was the name of the game.
From nowhere, Discord pulled out a grandfather clock, holding it in one claw and peering suspiciously at the face. “Hmm… you two might want to get going, you know. You've got twenty minutes until that pesky pegasus gets to your little love shack, at most!” With that, Discord tossed the clock in the air and vanished.
In shock, I realized the massive timepiece was headed directly for my head, but before I could move, Spiral made a noble sacrifice, shoving her beloved master aside with a heartrending scream—only to have a tiny model clock bounce off her nose and fall to the ground harmlessly.
